Excluding backups Snapshots

Hi all

I'm still buying a 516 for a customer, but am I right assuming that snapshots are automatically excluded from backups made on external media (USB or peripheral sister SIN)?

Thank you...

This is the main configuration of ESX.

Another way to do, that it is instead of the backup of these config files you could always create an installation script for ESX, so that if your host is dead he would have just run the install script and it needs to configure your host without having to do a restore.  Although this does not mean now this script every time you make a config change in ESX. So there are advantages/disadvantages for the two solutions

  • Backup - Snapshot issue / question.

    Greetings,

I have a fairly new 5.5 ESXi update 2 installation (Essentials). (September 2014).  Currently, I have only a VM on it. It is a stand-alone Server SBS 2011 standard conversion.  The virtual machine works fine without any problems.

The only issue I'm having is with my Barracuda backup system.   It fails at the end of the backup while trying to create a snapshot. I know what you think.  "Why I write this here? '...

I go back with the support of Barracuda.  Everything that they asked me to check, host-wise, wise system and guest-wise I could do and are come empty-handed.  See between the asterisks below for tit last correspondence I had with them (they did the highlighting).

I'm not very well the workings of VMware, so I don't really know where to go from here. Because I came before empty, I'm not even sure that Barracuda is on the right track here.  But I need to get back to them before they will help me any further.  I just need to some advice and assistance to determine if it actually, the question, and if it is, how to remedy or continue troubleshooting.

Thanks for any idea and assistance, you may be able to provide me with.

    Start of Barracuda support *.

"Look in the error, I see that it looks to be another process running at the same time the backup is running or something is not finished before start backups." "That's what I see in the newspaper of bbs:

26 Dec 11:31: 27 2014 barracuda backupd [14271]: failed to create the snapshot (vim25_TaskInProgress): another task is already underway.
26 Dec 11:31: 27 2014 barracuda backupd [14271]: fatal: could not create any backup host vmware snapshot: SFD-SRV1. Stratfire.local

End of support for Barracuda *.

    Hi p...

The list of files seems ok now?  It's much better from my point of view...

If so, it looks like success all around. See the attached list after deleting all.  I'll remind the Barracuda.

I can't thank you enough for all your help and patience.  You really are an asset to the VMware forum community.  Thank you for taking the time to work with me. I learned a bit about yourself.

    Thanks again

  • Backup/Snapshot for ESXi alternatives

    Hello

I'm currently looking for backup (about snapshots) for the free ESXi 4 server solutions.

The backup solution itself could also cost a few euros (max. €200 per server/virtual machine).

The best would be, if we can run it like for example a cron job on the remote Linux server.

We already tried Trilead VMX, but it only works on windows :/

You can try ghettoVCB at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 (a nfs on your linux may be a sharing option).

  • VCB backup snapshot or virtual machine?

    Hello

Workflow of VCB, I read these procedures frequently and I'm confused by what backup software is stored:

".....  Put the virtual machine snapshot mode and take a snapshot.

.. .Mount snapshot of the VM for the proxy backup (to win)

.. software backup .the performs a regular backup of the snapshot of the virtual machine moving data from backup media... »

So I wonder what backup software is saved: any virtual machine or virtual machine snapshot? and why?

And for linux, it will export (copy) the snapshot of the machine the VCB proxy virtual of the SAN. If a single snapshot is stored to the proxy of VCB mount point, why VCB proxy must have enough space to contain the largest virtual machine?

Can someone give me some clarification?

    LAN

    To clearify:

In the world of VMware ESX, a snapshot is the same as the 'entire virtual machine' as you say. It's just the disks 'frozen' in a State of know. VCB can then move up and back up this disk (or copy it to the VCB proxy) while the virtual machine is placing the changed data in the temporary file. Some people refer to this temporary file that the file 'snapshot', while the other, see you in the frozen file as the 'snapshot' file, and creates confusion for users/students. A 'snapshot' is simply the functionality described above.

When the backup action is finalized, VCB tells vCenter to "remove the snapshot" which actually means that the data in the temporary file are merged with the 'frozen' disk that is then back 'defrosted' and put into live operation.

  • Local storage - lack of space for the backup snapshot?

    Hi all

My apologies if this is an obvious question, but I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a question I have about our ESXi server.

We run ESXi on a Dell PowerEdge 1950 III with 16 GB Ram and 200 GB RAID 5 15 K RPM SAS for local storage - we do not have a requirement for a SAN, etc. and I understand how 'best practice' implementation of ESXi and that local storage is not recommended.

    Our question is:

We are running very low on the amount of local storage on the server and we use a Perl script every night to create a snapshot of a VM only we want to save that copies the original VM on a separate NAS device files. Apart from slow performance, this configuration works well for us. However, during the backup of the file snapshot obviously grew up with changes that are made and once the backup is complete he writes these returns to the original vmdk file (or so I think). Can anyone tell what would happen if we managed to create a snapshot at the beginning of the backup, but the server ran out of space before the backup finishes and commit the change snapshot... it would seriously damage our original server vmdk?

If you would like more information on our installation program please let me know but I would like some advice before embark us on this... Thanks in advance.

    Stuart Little

If the volume is running out of space, even if you have an active member of snapshot on a virtual computer it stops running (the VM will crash) and you will not be able to commit the snapshot (free space is needed for this). Always avoid the chance of a filling volume, especially if you are using snapshots, while you probably won't lose data if you handle it properly (move the virtual machine to a volume with storage or free space before attempting to commit the snap) you will have at least virtual machine downtime.

  • VMDK backup snapshot

    Hello

I design a VI solution for one of my clients, when the daily administration of Virtual Infrastructure Planning, I'm stuck on the issue of the backup. Infact customer already has a detached SAN box easly can meet the requirements of storage for virtual machines, but not for snapshots. Box cannot be updated at this time due to budget constraints. I need a solution that the customer can run backup at all / each file VMDK without creating snapshots of storage design area.

I have dig and find a few products like vRanger Pro, Veeam, connection also Backup Exec Vmware VI Agent (client using BackupExec 12d). But these products are creating some confusion over.

Can someone clear this up for me, if I can make backups of VMDK files on tapes without creating their shots on storage box or locally on the VCB Server? Please let me know f there is a cheap solution to answer this question.

    Hello

Is 100% not 30%... If for any reason the snapshot is not deleted, that occurs, 30% number might lead to a full VMFS. In this case the Petedr approach can be one that suits. The other option is to ensure that the snapshot is deleted before moving on to the next backup, etc.

  • Time Machine asking to create new backup, backups, but seems to work very well

Time Machine tells me that he wants to delete my backup history and create a new backup volume, but it seems to be back up files very well. I use an Apple AirPort WiFi. Must I just keep ignoring Time machine to start a new backup volume? I really don't want to lose my backup history.

    Something is not here.

When time Machine tell the backup is corrupt and he must wipe... then it can save is more to it.

That probably makes TM uses your local hard drive to a backup snapshot from the network on your Time Capsule version (or AE more USB drive) is now corrupted.

Sorry, but your history of Time Machine is now dead and lost... and just need to bury. There is rarely any great point by making a backup of the sparsebundle... but if you are adamant then for sure just copy the sparsebundle to a different location... erase the drive, and then start over... You have no choice.

  • Backup of 2 aircraft on the airport with the same files and photos

I just bought an airport and an iMac. I already have a Mac Book Pro. The Mac Book has 250 GB of photos on it and some other stuff that I will put on my iMac and I will use my iMac as my place to edit (on Lightroom) if I save both devices after that will there be a double of everything on the airport?  Think about keeping life simple, I want to delete all of my Mac Book, after that he was transferred to the iMac, especially when I start editing, then my 2 sets will begin to differ and life will get complicated? Any thoughts? Thank you

If I save both devices after that will there be a double of everything on the most convenient airport?

Yes, default Time Machine backs up everything on a Mac on the first copy and save any changes took place after the first full back upward.

However, you do not have the opportunity to have the time Machine to exclude applications or files that you choose to save. Open Time Machine preferences, click Options, click the button at the bottom of the list of exclusions to navigate and choose the applications or files that you want to exclude backups +.

to install the server does not

Hi, I tried to install memeo instant backup, a program of a product I have recentley bought. I know that the software and the product is not damaged, because I am able to install it on other computers. Its my fault see however, I have a FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB seagate external hard drive, and I had planned to use it on multiple computers. Sort of, I have it installed on my computer windows 7 any problem, but when I was installing on my windows vista computer, I accidentally unplugged the drive during the installation of the boad of seagate and memeo instant dashboard upward.  Needless to say, I knew this would be a problem. Windows popped up saying that the dashboard Seagate (which is the program that installs Memeo instant backup) have not installed properly, so I clicked on reinstall this program with the recommended settings, and I handed the drive and started the installation again. Setup of the Board of Directors of Dash Seagate stood and I started to install and when it came to installing the Memeo backup snapshot, a window is in the "Preparing to install" a windows installer, and after about 10 to 15 minutes, another windows installer window popped up saying "install the server does not" there is no error code or anything. You can uninstall the installation of backup by using programs and features? If this isn't the case, it can be it is an incomplete installation and does not let you uninstall it.

You may need to use a 3rd party software removal tool to uninstall.
Then reinstall the backup of the installation and see if the installation completed successfully.

If this does not help, you can post your question on the forum of Memeo Instant Backup listed below:

  • Limitation of the size using MS Backup backup

When I am using MS Backup and backup on a USB key, it fails due to the limit of 4 GB FAT32 file structure.  I use Acronis True Image, because it breaks the backup into several files.  I want an another backup because of the structure of True Image files.  Is there a way to get around this or software to which is attached a file that can be read without special software being preinstalled on the disc?  Backup will work with the USB, the file size limit is the problem.  I would like to use the USB as it is less expensive ($35 for 16 GB), I have several backups and store them off-site and it is faster than my external hard drive.  I prefer to use backup rather than copy / paste, because you can save sets of files from backup rather than having to select the individual files you want to include or exclude backups each time.   Thanks in advance for your comments.

I just wanted you to know that I found the answer.  I was unable to format one of my readers for memory stick USB using the techniques above.  But I did an internet search and came up with the following article.  (http://www.ntfs.com/quest22.htm)  It describes how to go to the device and select "optimize performance". After selecting this option, you can use the process cited by Praseetha K. to format to NTFS flash drive.  It'll back in the drop-down list box.  But that will happen that after selecting the option optimize for performance and apply.  My system must be different from all the systems described in the answers because I can't come up with all the menus via the techniques mentioned but by using 'My Computer', Device Manager' and 'Properties', I was able to convert the file format.   But be careful.  Under 'my computer' it will allow you to format a drive including your boot drive.  Make sure that you have selected your USB key before selecting the format!   And it will erase any information on this drive.   Thank you all for your help and maybe it will help others.

  • Sharing of disk and snapshot

    Hello

I'm deploying a small cluster using Red Hat GFS, so I have two virtual machines with a system (not shared) disk and a big shared disk.

On each virtual machine, I'm a (paravirtual) SCSI controller without bus sharing (for the system disk) and a (paravirtual) SCSI controller with physical bus share (for the shared disk). The shared disk is INDEPENDENT.

What I want is to take a snapshot of the virtual machine with only the system disk, but the vCenter do not allow me to take it! Is there a limitation of snapshot and sharing of bus or something wrong with my config?

    Thank you

    Andrea

Excluding the snapshots of virtual disks form works only with affecting the independent-persistent, but as soon as the sharing of bus comes into play, snapshots are not longer supported.
