  I have an old satellite 1110. It is a dual boot with linux and windows XP machine. The Boot Manager is grub.
  When I let the machine start the OS default without touching the keyboard at the stage of grub, about 70% of the time when the finishing of the machine to start the keyboard and mouse will be non-functional.   Check it by using the Fn + F9 key combination. If this combination does not work, try to find the power button function in Control Panel-> mouse control

  Satellite M40X sounds new enough to have CDs of feature writing. Seems to me a HW question but you can try:
  1 - Clean the blank CD with a cloth dry

  If I understand your posting right, THAT HDD is troublemaker, so I think you should get it again or another HARD drive, set the BIOS to the default settings and try reinstalling the recovery image.

  If possible, do this and post the results.

  Not sure about your problem. My A100 runs on Windows XP Home edition, so... But I think that, as you can see sth on the screen, it must have sth to do with software, like bios, drivers, OS. Why not try to reinstall Vista, download the latest version of the bios? You say that you are not in the bios, but maybe you don't need? I think that when you insert the Vista CD, it should automatically start the program. If you still don't see it, try borrowing an external monitor and connect it to your laptop. Maybe this would help somehow.

  My guess, some of the many users did sth bad :-). My mother-in-law never ceases to amaze me with his computer problems. Sometimes I don't know even how she was able to have done this to his new PC :-).
