  It was a scam and your hang up was wise. If you gave him no
  in your computer, he didn't hack it.

  They are * not * Microsoft. This is a complete scam and one that has become very common these days. Do anything they tell you to do and hang up on them.

• Scam: received a call from an Indian guy claiming to be from Microsoft

  I just got a call from an Indian guy who claims to be from Microsoft.  When I questioned him ask for a web address and phone number to verify, also told me that they couldn't give me that because of the data protection. The call showed up on my phone as our area, so I was suspicious immediately.  The guy pointed out that whenever we went on the internet/email it was malicious spyware software download and it needed to be sorted.  When I probed more, saying I didn't, he said he was calling for the United Kingdom.  It changed so his tune to say he was calling the part G Tech Support from Microsoft.

  I guess it's a scam, but I am very concerned that some people may believe this story!  I see that you have posted questions on your Web site regarding this company and it doesn't seem to be a scam, it is why, could you become aware on your website that it is a scam and place it in a very visible.

  Hi, I just became a victim of a scam. A company (Indian person) posing as the support of microsoft certified saying they had reports that my pc was slow and that they could run faster. I gave them access to my computer (I know, what a wally) via logmein code 320307. Last night, I deleted all the files from IE and cookies etc, ran a scan. I am woorried on the software "keylogger" trying to capture my bank details. Is there anything else I need to do?

• Phone call from Windows saying I had many junk files - is it a scam?

  I have Windows Vista HP on my laptop.  Last night, I received a phone call from someone who said he was from Windows & my computer is slow because I had so many unnecessary files.  I was skeptical, but he did as he asked, via start > computer > etc, then typed in 'unwanted Prefetch"as indicated by him who brought up a list of files, which many have been marked! Error.  He kept saying: ' Oh my God ' when I told him this topic, but that Windows could help solve this & not to worry.  Guests were about to happen, so I asked if I could remind him.  Wasn't the answer, but he was going to call again on Monday night.  "Are you in India?", I asked.  "No, Oxfordshire, but I'm of the India.".   I again asked her name/number - he said Sam Hoggard and began to give me the - 5210-01865 - number when my phone battery ran out and cut the call.

  I can't find that any info on this situation from the web, so my question is - is this likely to be a real call?  Windows are proactively calls users?

  Thank you for posting and this bring to our attention.  I can assure you that Microsoft DO NOT contact customers by phone this way.  The engineers of the technical support of Microsoft with customers by phone, only time is if the client contacts the help desk first and asks that we call them.  It looks like the command he had run just listed files but just to be on the safe side I am you provide a link to a post in our security and our Forum of privacy that deals to get rid of spyware or malicious software.  I highly recommend that you read and follow the instructions in the Microsoft MVPs.  The scans are free and I invite you to run all 3 they recommend.  Here is the link to this post:

  How to get rid of Spyware/Malware

  Let us know what are the scans.  If they detect viruses or software malware and you need assistance with remove them if please post a reply and let us know.  Make sure that you include the name of the detected virus/malware, error messages Word for word on the screen that you get, and a description of any behaviour of Bazaar that you noted with your computer.

  Keep us informed and, obviously, if this character happens to you call back do not respect its instructions!

  These scam calls are usually of a person representing Windows rather than Microsoft, but in any case, the call was nothing else than a phishing attempt! Do not give any information.

  It is a scam! Not to follow their instructions or advice and not to provide ANY information to them.

  Because they use the internet lines and/or phone to complete their fraud, there may be federal agencies in your country who are interested in discovering their calls. Their report directly to the appropriate agency if you feel you can contribute to their arrest and the charges.

  Microsoft do NOT pick up the phone and start dialing customers and never phones/e-mails asking for personal information or asking them to visit a web site! Please do not take into account these calls and hang up immediately.

  Avoid scams that use the Microsoft name fraudulently

  On another note, if you have problems with your computer, please do not hesitate to post a description of the situation and the error messages you received in those forums. We would be happy to help you. (information staff unnecessary or requested !)

  They are cold, you try to pick up the 'business' calling

  It's a scam.

  Either these so-called "Microsoft" Tech companies want to sell you a worthless software, or remote access to your computer to try to steal your credit card and bank information and also achieve an identity theft on you.

  You are the only person who knows if you gave them remote access.

  If you gave them remote access and you do Internet banking, contact your bank, to explain, and change passwords.

  If you use your online credit card, cancel and get a new one issued to you.

  And the only way that willl you know that you are free to them is to backup your data and do a clean install of your operating system.

  I live in Switzerland, but am British and a mac user (no groans please) although I Mac office installed.
  In any case, tonight I received a call from an Asian woman of this phone number 00441865600154, the 1st time, I pressed the wrong button and cut them but they were recalled to work and she said she was from MS and my computer downloaded hacking software and had it flashed an alert at Microsoft. The line was very very bad and I've been cut called the number back and I just domestic type normal BT mail voice... scam or real?
  MS have the ability to track these things, and how they know my phone number to the House Switzerland?

  It is a scam, Microsoft does not call for end-users, because I don't think that they follow everyone. All calls more like this contempt please and offer the information for them. Total scam.

  They probably bought a list of phone numbers from somewhere or they get telephone directories in Europe. Not too sure about all other methods. That would be my guess.

  Don't always believe what someone says if they call you. This applies to almost anything.

  I received several calls from a company called 'eprotectionz' technical department which proposes to rid your computer of an "infection" (no virus) apparently slowing down Windows. In a first time, I finished the callwhen they began to ask questions about my computer.  They are appatently a global company - I am based in Australia and on checking their site, they operate out of the Australia and other countries. Their phone number here in Aust is 02-8091-0114. This company is legitimate.  I become more suspicious when they ask to enter my computer remotely while I followed the instructions to remove the so-called infection.  I don't trust everybody these days and trust no one!   Very bad. You have been scammed.

  This is a scam and that is becoming more and more common lately. But even worse, if you let them into your computer, who knows what damage they did here or what confidential information they stole.

  So, I highly recommend that you do both of the following immediately:

  1 do a clean reinstall of Windows.

  2. change all your passwords, especially all of banks or other financial sites.
