Found the fix.  After trying to simply restore, (no restore points not listed a while ago).  The fix was to reinstall HP Support Assistant of the SW installation folder and restart. Problem solved.

Found that I had the same problem here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555472

"To solve the problem, follow these steps:

    Go to the Windows registry.

what I did export this key to work windows XP install and import the reg file for windows failure or you can manually create the key and send it to point to the location of the file if the file is missing then copies the file u do not know if the file differs from the House of Pro but its another option to take if U'r is still stuck.
Sort my prob was the corruption in the reg for missing file that the hotfix may not work as such. If U still have the problem (cause the post is old) so good luck
  • How can I turn on help and support in windows xp?

After I got a virus and I installed avg virus program to help eliminate the vuris that I wasn't able to go in Help and support. I get a message telling me to activate the program, but he didn't tell me how or where.

"Help and Support" is a Service that runs under Windows XP.  To enable it, go to the Services Panel:
    Start-> Run-> "services.msc".
When the window opens, look for the line "Help and Support" and double-click it.
In the next window that appears, make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" and the "Service status" is "started."  Otherwise, click on the 'Start' button and/or set the Startup Type to automatic.  OK your way out.

    Hello

    ·         You have installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 on the computer?

    ·         You are able to browse normally in internet explore?

This occurs if the Microsoft HTML Help control is blocked (probably by a Microsoft Update) by defining a "Kill bit" in the registry. To resolve the problem, upgrade to Service Pack 3 , which publishes an updated version of the hhctrl.ocx control.

If this doesn't help, run the following command from start, run dialog box:

    Regsvr32.exe hhctrl.ocx

    Press ENTER

    Hi DonJazz,

The most common cause is a computer virus that has disabled the automatic update of Windows, or another service on your computer that is required by Windows Update. If your computer is infected with a virus, you will need to analyze and clean first and then restart these services. While your computer may not be infected with a virus, it is recommended that you follow the steps to search for viruses and then turn on the services.

To restart in Mode safe and search for possible viruses

If a virus infects a computer, it often blocks the ability of the computer to run antivirus programs or causes these ineffective programs. Follow these steps to control and eradicate any viruses:

    1. reboot your computer in safe mode. For more information, see start your computer in safe mode .

    2. scan your computer for viruses.

    3. Please see How to get rid of malware for more information on removing the virus programs and malware from your computer

    4. Once you've scanned and removed any viruses, restart your computer.

For more information about restarting the services required by windows update, please see the link below.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/Windows-Update-error-80070422-80244019-or-8DDD0018

    Hope this information helped you.

  • Group of startup programs in Help and Support

I have a long list of startup programs that appears in the help and support after the judgment. They are MS and program updates are working, but some of them are weird and some I do not use. It says 12520850 is a Trojan or a virus. How can I get rid of these programs?

Information in information system, software environment startup programs, startup programs (or msinfo32) can show more things that it should and can be quite intimidating.
When you see a great list you describe, the process of collecting the information went haywire somewhere along the way, but does not seem to present other problems (next to the particular quest).  Most of the people never look as well as the article, so there are probably a lot of systems that have the problem and he is not even noticed.  It certainly should work fine but.
You can fix it so it makes more sense and is less scary research with a small VB Script from the site of Ramesh.
You can record and play back the script, if you care to know what it does and how it works.  You can do everything yourself by hand, but the script is easier.
The script will make some registry changes, so if you choose to run the script, it won't hurt to back up your registry first.
This is a popular free registry backup tool:
Here is a link with more information on scripts and you can also download the Riou script to clean the list of startup programs.
    Thank you, Ramesh.
    Please report your results.
If you still think you may have a malware infection, I could do this:
Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:

    SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/
They can be uninstalled later if you wish.
The scans by operating clean, then to solve any problems.

Do, or do not. There is no test.

    Hi Jalke116,

You can try these steps and see if it helps.

    Step 1:

You can try to perform a clean boot and check if the problem persists.

A clean boot to check if startup item or services to third-party application is causing this issue.

You can read the following article to put the computer in a clean boot:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

After you resolve the problem, see the section on boot link to how to restore your computer to a Normal startup mode.

    Step 2:

You can also read the following article and try to download the Microsoft Safety Scanner and perform a full scan on your computer.

    Microsoft safety scanner

Note: When you perform the analysis, there are chances of losing the data that you can take a backup of important data before performing analysis.

    Hope this information is useful.
