  I removed NM v5.1.9055 three computers and re-installed to v 5.5.9118. inserted my key and re started to each of them.   Presumably using your XP or Vista!

  You need to change network settings into the laptop to allow remote connections according to the directives of the wired connection.

  You will also need to make changes to the false firewall XP/Vista has as well.

  FYI: The WAP54G has no way to filter all network traffic, so the question is not to the AP.
