Impossible to share public folders, printer & external drives

My HP Touchsmart IQ505a for some reason any does not allow me to set the records public, printer sharing & my 3 external USB Drives.

The PC still has the original WD3200AAJS as internal only (split with being the initial recovery D: drive), the hard drive 1 drive recorder DVD TS-T633A of x and 1 x Flash memory slot. My OS is factory original installed Vista Home Premium SP2 64 bit with all the packs of current service & updates installed and up to date.

As far as I can tell that everything is set up for sharing, including all users with passwords, more I'm in administrators with has rights of complete system - no doubt.

Whenever I tried to share the material objects I get an error message saying "Impossible to share [share name]. INCORRECT FUNCTION. ».

In the network and sharing Center sharing pubic records and printer sharing are off and when I try to change them, I get the above error msg.

I tried to log in as an ADMINISTRATOR, same problem. I even tried allowing all Services but again same problem.

Another problem is the drive C has no restore points and I am unable to create manually I get a msg of error: DISK WRITE PROTECTED but can write, record & copy files, etc. on the disc.

Can anyone help please.

  • Cannot rename personal folders on external drive

I have an external drive WD Passport that I keep my personal files. After having a virus deleted, I find that I can not rename one of my files due to the read-only attribute being degraded.  I am running Windows XP Home Edition.  I tried to restart in Mode safe and by changing the attributes it - didn't work.  I tried to change the attributes by using the command prompt - did not work.  I need to get this shady read-only out of my files so they can be renamed.  Any ideas?

I'm sorry that apparently you won't believe me - or Microsoft.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/326549

Other things to try/test. I don't know if you have tried these things or not.

    1. are you able to rename the files/folders on a drive different from the system external hard? If not, then maybe some infection had damaged you Windows files. If this is the case, then you can try the (sfc/scannow) System File Checker or a repair installation, or do a clean installation of Windows. There is no way for me to know the exact state of your computer from here, or what would be best for you to do.

    2. can you rename the files/folders on the hard disc of origin if it is attached to another computer? If Yes, the problem points to your original operating system is damaged by the virus. If not, then the virus probably damaged files on the external hard drive. It is not uncommon, especially if you have been infected by a kind of ransomware. Again, I have no way of knowing that you have been infected.

    3. If you can rename the files/folders on a different hard disk, you can also try to move the data off the external problem, formatting and see if you can rename the files now.

And that's all I have. Good luck in your efforts. I have nothing else to add about this.

  • Move public folders to another drive

I have a new computer with a small disk C: (SSD) and a large drive D: (mechanical transmission). I moved (My Documents, my pictures, my music, etc.), document records all users using the Properties > location > move... Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work for public folders. I can still go to Properties > location which displays the same message that "You can change where the files are stored in this folder...". "but the path that is displayed is not editable and it is not a move... button. Does anyone know how to move the public folders?

@Hilmar - all the info that I discovered to date indicate that file Public is not movable. Perhaps, it can be done with a sort of hack to check but if so, I have not found. Instead, I created a new folder in the location I wanted to (in my case, at the disk instead of SSD), manually set the permissions and sharing options and had then my computer users add this folder to their respective libraries. Kind of pain, I know, but it was the only solution that I could find.

  • Share iTunes media to external drive issues

I think I know 'how' to do it, but have a question about what happens if I go this way.

    Background:

Set up a new iMac and put our music on an external drive.  I have my card to the library user account using 'alt' / find the process of the library.

Now, I have separate accounts for my wife and two children and want their iTunes using the same media.

Home sharing works fine if the computer is on and that I'm connected, but this isn't an ideal solution for us.  It seems, as I use the 'alt' / find the process of the library for each account and it should work, although I understand that a single user can use the library at some point.  That shouldn't be a problem for the way in which we use our computer.

Now, assuming that the process works, my question - for those who did, here's my question: each user customizable yet their use of iTunes to their liking?  More important still everyone can customize what gets synchronized on their devices (phone/iPad)?

Thanks in advance if I understand how the library file that iTunes creates works with the application.

    Hey jjtrindc,

    Hi Katmandu774,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forums.

The Public folder is a convenient way to share files that are stored on your computer. You can share files in this folder with other people using the same computer and with people using other computers on the same network. Any file or folder you put in the folder Public is automatically shared with the people who have access to your Public folder.

If you are not on a domain, you can limit network access to the Public folder so that people with a user account and password for this computer. To do this, turn on sharing protected by password.

    1. Open the network and sharing Center by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, click network and Internet, click network and sharing Center.
    2. Click the arrow next to password protected sharing, and then click one of the following options:

    ·         Turn on password protected sharing

    ·         Turn off password protected sharing

    1. Click apply. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To control the level of access to the Public folder

    1. Open the network and sharing Center by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, click network and Internet, click network and sharing Center.
    2. Click the arrow next to public folder sharing, and then click one of the following options:

    ·         Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files

    ·         Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change and create files

    ·         Turn off sharing (people logged on to this computer can still access this folder)

    1. Click apply. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Also, make sure you add everyone to the public folder and give the necessary permissions to access it.

  • How can I move the public folders default location to a new drive?

I'll put up a brand new machine with Windows 7 pre-installed and a big 500 GB hard drive.  I partitioned the drive into 2 logical drives C: and E:

Wherever possible I want to store all user data on E: (I know is not possible for all the parameters of the user to move - mores the pity).  I have not yet copied across all the data from my old machine so I just empty folders to play with at the moment.  I moved all the My Documents/pictures/etc files for the e: drive by changing the location in the properties of the folder.

However, I can't do the same with public folders.  If I right click on the folder, click Properties, then location, it's like I can't change C:\Users\Public\... but it does not change

No idea why, or how I can get around this?

This is possible thanks to a Directory junction that can redirect to a new location of the Public folder.

First create a new folder on E:\ and maybe you want to call it Public.

Go to Cmd prompt as administrator.

All copy existing public folders to the new folder created using the command
Robocopy /MIR %Systemdrive%\Users\Public E:\Public     (or any name that you used for public folders on E :)

You need robocopy as he takes care of hidden files, etc., especially if you have the recorded TV folder in public folders.

Once the copy is transferred, you must delete the existing public folder and create a junction in his place. To do this, boot into Safe Mode as an administrator and remove the public content and file inviting again by running Cmd as administrator. To remove the Public folder:

    RmDir /s /q %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Users\Public

After creating the new folder location and remove the existing public folder, now is time to create a Directory junction of audiences with the following folders:

Mklink /J %Systemdrive%\Users\Public E:\Public                         (or any name you named the folder opublic on E:\)

    for example: mklink /dC:\Users\Public E:\Public

Now, all that is intended for the original Public folder gets directed to the new location.
    I hope this helps.

  • How to include folders to D: drive, specifically in Documents public, not only in the document library?

Windows 7 Pro 64 - bit SP1: how to include records of the D: drive in public Documents so that they become automatically visible to each user who opens his library of Documents? At present, I can only include these folders in the document library, invisible to other users. I don't want to load large files physically in the C: drive, where public Documents.

You can do this easily because public Documents is a folder, not a library.

You can place junction points in public Documents that point to folders on the disk D:\.

To do this open a command prompt by typing cmd in the box to start the search, made a right click the program cmd that appears in the search results and click 'run as administrator '. Type the following command and press ENTER:

    MKLINK /J "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Folder" "D:\Folder.

    http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770988 (v = ws.10) .aspx

You may need to adjust the permissions of files and folders on the drive D:\ so that all users can have access to them.

I have not tested it; so be cautious.

DSC_2429 is in the shown locaton and present in all the Photos, but there is no folder "Tulsa"... "in the tree.

The left pane is a "choose one". "All photos" are just that. 'G' is a different option.

Lightroom is not a file Explorer. He knows only the drives and files that you have imported the photos of. If LR shows not all of the photos that are on your hard drive, it is because you did not import all photos.

If LR shows you a photo in "all photos" but do not show it in the folder you think he is in, go to "all photos", select the image, right click "view in the library folder. This will show you where LR think the picture is.

    What about Clyde UK

    Hi Clyde,

    1. do you get an error message/code?

    2. What is the model number of the external drive?

    3. What is the brand and model of the computer?

In order to diagnose the problem, you can check if Device Manager disk external drive is listed:

    a. type devmgmt.msc in the start menu, run the box, then press enter on the keyboard.

    b. in Device Manager, check if the hard drive is listed in the list of devices.

    Method 1:

I suggest you to connect the hard drive to a different USB port or connect the external hard drive to another computer and check if the problem persists.

    Method 2:

  • How to share a VM in an external drive between machines?

I want to save a VM (Ubuntu 14.04.1) in an external drive and use between iMac and MBP.

    There will be a problem?

All of the recommendations, if any, on how to ensure that it can be used on both machines?

    Using vmfusion 6.0.4.

If you are going to move the virtual machine between different computers, then always stop, not suspend, inside guest OS (just as if it were a physical machine) and then closing VMware Fusion before disassembly/ejection of the external drive.

Add the following option in the configuration .vmx so you are not prompted with the message moved/copied.

    UUID.action = 'keep '.

Take a look at: changing the file .vmx for your VM of Fusion (1014782)

Note that 'keep' is as if you said "I moved it" vs. "I copied it" who would 'create '.

In addition, you should avoid moving between systems with snapshots as there can be problems, attempt to restore a created on a system while running on a different system so created.

  • Drive external drive is not accessible, access denied.

My computer (Win7 Home Prem) ran chkdsk after an update of windows, probably triggered by ccleaner or glary utilities. My external hard drive was plugged during the update, reboot and chkdsk. The chkdsk command probably checked my coz external HD, I can see folders/paths that were there. The next day I couldn't access my HD due to a mistake, saying: it was not accessible and access is denied. I searched online potential solution and tried the following without success, and they have been applied using an admin account and an admin cmd.

    * Change the permissions and ownership, but the property always says it's impossible to determine the owner.

    * Changed the share permissions.

    * Do you have 'takeown' and a 'icalcs' has changed owner but same error.

    * Check the disk management, drive seemed ok with the letter drive and all.

    * Ran chkdsk /F on both of my C: drive and external hard drive, both completed successfully without error during the analysis and not found bad sectors.

    * Program of Unlocker used to check if player was running another process, found nothing.

In my computer, it shows the letter drive and NTFS, but not bar showing free space. Properties would show 0 free space / used. Here I can go to cmd and access the content from there. I used the function of 'Explore disk' of glary Utilities and I could see the content and even run mp4/avi files in the player. So I guess the drive and its contents is ok, just that I can't access it through normal means.

    Thanks in advance!

    Rob

    Hi LeBlanc,

I apologize for the late response and can certainly understand your concern. I appreciate your efforts. As you mentioned that you are not able to access the external drive, and you receive the error of access denied when you connect to your user account, I suggest to try to create a new administrator user account and then try to access the external drive.

To create a new user account, please follow the steps mentioned in the link below:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=Windows-8

Please let us know if the problem persists.
