Migration of VMWare ESXi4 to VMWare Server 2

I used VMWare ESXi4 for months, but it seems that my old server can not handle more.

So, I would migrate to the earlier version of VMWare, which is VMWare Server 2

There are many jobs that I created with ESXi.

I wonder if it can use with VMWare Server2, or I have to do some kind of cloning or the conversion similar to esxi server migration?

I'm sorry for my weak in English typo.

Thank you

Hello

as OP said that is the only way to convert the virtual machine using the vmware converter.

I agree that it is probably a FAQ - if it is, a big boost for the right page would be very helpful and appreciated. My google-fu is weak today.

(At this time), I have a server to use for virtualization. He is currently running Win2k3 x 64 and VMware Server 2.0.

After checking the assorted HCLs, I came to the realization that this thing will probably be ESXi which, as far as I know, will that make life easier and provide more resources to my VM customers. But before you start, I need clarification on a single piece: my clients VMware Server 2 must be migrated in some way?

I can quite easily copy their directories on a Windows file server before the upgrade.

    After the upgrade, if:

    1. I can copy them on the ESXi Server? "Speak" windows network? Or do I I intend using a USB stick or something similar

    2. How to migrate or convert the VMware Server 2 offline customers to ESXi 3?

Are there some best practices guides that would help?

    Kind regards

    Chris

Yes. But with a limitation - ESX (i) does not support IDE HDDS in VM.

Ubuntu 8.04 Server - Drupal, SAMBA

Can someone help me solve this problem?  I don't know no were to start digging because I'm new to ESXI.

  • Software and Vmware Server 2.0.2

    Hello

In our project, we still have a legacy VMware Server 2.0.2 and I would like to know how it is affected (if any) by software. Y at - there a patch available? or any workaround that I have to ask?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello

VMware server 2 is end of live for 2011...

So, no official patch vmware will be available.

Maybe if you search the web, you'll find something.

You should take in mind for migrating from vmware server to another vmware product.

In any case, if your vmware server is not directly connected to the INTERNET, the risk should not be so high.

  • VMware Server Version 2.0.2 - migrate VM to ESXi 5.5?

    Hey guys

I use an old Dell T410 with VMware Server Version 2.0.2 (Build 203138) server running on top of serving 2008R1.

I'm looking to install a new server and you want to run ESXi 5.5.

Is it possible to convert VM VMware Server Version 2.0.2 (Build 203138) to ESXi 5.5?

Otherwise I'm running Shadowprotect. If I can't convert, is it possible to do a HIR to ESXi 5.5 from an image of a VM from VMware Server Version 2.0.2 (Build 203138) Shadowprotect?

Finally, I was looking for to run ESXi 5.5 Essentials (not more) on the new physical host and then use the old host as a temporary backup with ESXi 5.5 too. I have to buy 2 x 5.5 ESXi licenses to run it on both machines?

If you want more specifications about the network made me know.

    Kind regards

    Hello

You must convert the virtual server computers to be able to run on ESXi 5.5.

Take a look at this, it is perhaps useful:

How to migrate computers virtual vmware server to vSphere, ESXi

On the essential, it allows to manage 3 servers (servers esxi) with up to 2 processors of each:

  • Migrate from VMware Guest Server that contains the database of VIC in the new VMware host

Hi, I inherited a system running ESX 3.0.1. The CIV is running on a stand-alone server, but the database resides on a guest on one of the VMware hosts. I need to move/migrate the vmware client to another server so I can use it. How can I migrate because if I try I'll lose the connection to the database?

I can not just to right and migrate because servers have different CPUs. I can first.

Sorry if this is a newbie question.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

do not convert.  This will leave the original intact. Once it comes online and has been validated, you can destroy the old.   In addition, do if offline.

  • Migration from VmWare Workstation to a server solution

I am running 8 virtual machines of Windows XP inside VMWare Workstation on Windows 2008 (which I use as a workstation) in a box of Quad Core with 8 GB RAM.

My plan is to move the virtual machines of Windows XP on a separate server and possibly add a bit more to their number. I would also like to migrate the server functions of the current WIn2k8 box on that same server. These functions are the portion of light file, very lightweight SQL server and a few other minor services.

I am happy with VMWare Workstation and in particular the VMWare Tools application, because it makes the Windows XP virtual machines as reagent as if they were not VMs. It is important that after the migration, the virtual machines are as sensitive as they are now, given that I have would be to connect to them via ethernet to a Vista/Windows 7 machine by any means is the best (Office distance or something else).

I would like to know what solution I should opt for, I think that the options are either ESX/ESXi (what is the difference here?) - am I right that the best way to buy, as part of VMWare Server or VMware vSphere - 1.x on WIndows Server.

I have no requirements of availability/redundancy.

This means that ESX has a management console - what is a Linux kernel, you can perform operations as if you were on a Linux machine.

ESXi uses a very small SSH server and officially there is no way to interact with the machine on the console - everything is done by outside

They give the same ESX features no matter what version you use, just to manage that you need to do differently.

Of course ESX/ESXi works that on some hardware - there is a HCL and also a community supported the list machines that are capable of runnning ESXi, but are not supported by VMware.

VMware server - can run on practically a Windows y / OS Linux

    Good luck to you ventures!

  • VMware Server 2 migration

Hello group, we set off on virtualization, we used until present time server 2, checking on these pages, I've read about free vSphere.

I downloaded ISO and the customer. When you start to use it, it says I have 60 day trial.

Can please briefly explain you what is free and what is not?

    Thanks in advance.

    FM

The basic vSphere 4/5 hypervisor is free, who has at least as many features as VMware Server 2.

However, you must still apply for a license (which is free) to get rid of the warning of 60 days.  Follow these steps:

  • migration of VMware

    Hello

I have a question of rapid migration of vmware.

We install a new server r420 dell poweredge at a customer site. It's
replacement of a dell poweredge r310 server running vmware 4.0. It is managed
    VMware vcenter server at Headquarters.

If I do the new r420 managed by vcenter as well and make a host-to-host
migration, he will try to remove the virtual machines from the link to the head office
and then back down to the new server? With the virtual machines being about 200 GB I have
don't want that pass the link as his "only adsl speed.

    Thank you

Welcome to the VMware forums communities.  The host will communicate directly with them to migrate the virtual computer.  You'll just want to make sure that the two hosts each other can ping the IP address or the host name by which they are registered in vCenter.

  • VMware server Console Black

    Hello

When I open a (Windows 2003 32-bit) VMware Server console I get the attached black console.

When I make RDP to this server also I get the same console. I changed the display of color options, and even in this case, I get the same screen.

This virtual server is hosted on ESX 3.5i and I migrated to anotehr ESX host, but the problem remains the same.

No idea how to solve this problem?

See the blog below.  We have came across this the other day because a customer's lack of space on the C: drive.  However, change registry entries remotely did not work.  I think somehow, by pressing a key combination when you use the VMware Console and a user who had never logged, we got the loading screen.  I think it is or .  But whatever it is, you have to check the registry database for colors.

  • Graduating from VMware Server to ESXi

As I said in another forum, I take my virtual business and contemplate the correct path.  After reflection, I feel that vSphere Essentials Plus may be the 'end of the road' for us.  This end of the road is several months, or even years, away.  I want to do is expose the plan of base here and let you guys and girls look over and tell me if I'm off track.

Currently we have three hosts, one running VMware Server 1.02, another running server 1.06, the last and most recent is running Server 2.01.

I bought a new server with another machine which is the equivalent in power, but not under the name of storage space.  Currently, it is not used.  So basically, I have four machines capable of being the host machines.  In addition, when I am finished with an Exchange migration, I have yet another machine with enough power to be a host.

While I have a lot of machines available, I think I'll only be using a total of three machines in the end.  The two most recent machines and the current Exchange computer.  The rest will be moved to other functions or simply disappear (EBAY FTW!).

My plan is to install ESXi on the two most recent physical machines.  Move more, if not all, of my current virtual machines for them.  If necessary, I'll pull the Exchange machine retreat in the mix for a total of three ESXi hosts.  For a period of time, I will simply use ESXi hosts and the customer vShpere to control.  When I find it is unmanageable, I'll add vSphere Essentials Plus and a SAN to the mix for my goal of end of maximum availability, fault tolerance and manageability.  Obviously the big breakpoint as soon as now the San that this single purchase would consume most of my annual budget.

In any case, the only thing I like about running VMware Server ESXi vs is that it runs so that I can directly access files of the virtual machine on the host computer for backups, etc..  From what I see, if I install ESXi on these hosts, I won't be able to move, copy, back up virtual machines in a very easy way.  I have read, it can be done with the remote command line Interface, but I'm having a time difficult to determine if it works with ESXi or not.

    So here are my questions:

    (1) anyone see anything wrong with the plan?

    (2) understanding that I simply can't afford a SAN and vSphere Essentials most right now, is there a way I can safely access the virtual machines on ESXi for backups?  This can be automated?

    (3) looking forward, what is the less expensive, more powerful SAN for up to 3 servers?  I think maybe a Dell MD3000 or possibly a PS4000 EMC.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me.

    > 1). Anyone see something wrong with the plan?

ESXi has limited hardware compatibility list, so first you must make sure that esxi will work on your hardware. HCL is a list of the certified material, so your host doesn't have to be on HCL, but NIC and RAID cards must be.

    > 2). Understanding that I simply can't afford a SAN and vSphere Essentials most right now, is it possible that I can safely access the virtual machines on ESXi for backups? This can be automated?

Yes, but you always buy the less essential to use VCB.

    > 3). Looking forward, what is the less expensive, more powerful SAN for up to 3 servers? I think maybe a Dell MD3000 or possibly a PS4000 EMC.

  • Cannot add existing VM to VMware Server 2.0.2 on Debian Linux

It is apparently a fairly general failure, and I don't know where to start to look at to diagnose.  I hope that I just have something wrong set somewhere.

I try to add an existing virtual machine in Windows 7 (created on VMware Fusion 2.x, then migrated to Fusion 3.0) to my new dedicated VMware Server 2 fancy box.  I copied the entire VM directory structure (in a toplevel .vmware directory) to the same subdirectory where the other virtual machines on VMware Server 2 box.  I click on the link 'Add Virtual Machine inventory' and go to the virtual machine and click the .vmx file.  Then, I get this error:

The server could not complete a request (HTTP 0 ).
The server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request. If this problem persists, please contact your system administrator.

When I clicked OK, I find that the webservice of VMware seems to be declining.  I get no response from the port 8222 or 8333.  I'm not very familiar with command line tools, so the only way I know to get back on the administration interface is to restart VMware itself.

I am running VMware Server 2.0.2 - 203138, x86_64 rely on an Intel Xeon chip with four cores.  The host operating system is Debian 5.0.3 ("Lenny"), amd64 build.

In the subdirectory of/var/log/vmware, I find a lot of posts like the

  • The passage to vSphere VMWare Server 2.0?  How?

    Hello-

I hope someone can point me in the right direction here.

I'm under VMWare Server 2.0 on a box of 2300 Windows R2.  After having proven virtualization to management, I bought vSphere. Now I see that I need help to determine the best place to start with this migration project.  I have several questions, I hope someone can help with.

#1.  VMWare Server 2.0 is the box now have is that I want to use with VSphere.  The problem I have is that I have four virtual servers running on this box.  Y at - it a conversion utility to move in and outside this area of VMware Server 2.0 in vSphere environment?   Is it possible to move to something like a Dell EqualLogix (which I have) and box of your choice in the vSphere environment? Should I worry about what it is?  If Yes, what?

#2.  I have four physical servers that I will be the conversion to vSphere?  Is there a tool to help with this?

Tips, links to documentation and of course any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

    Hello

Welcome to the VMware community forums!

Basically the answer boils down to the use of VMware vCenter Converter

But if you want to reuse the same box for vSphere/ESX you have a little problem with that chickens and eggs for the existing virtual machine

You can however copy the VM out there to external storage and import them manually in vSphere later.

To do this, you may need to use the vmkfstools command line tool to import the disks in the correct format.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi all

1.0.2 is old enough. I would try to avoid this situation. Better update the other server 1.0.9 (more real).

It depends on the operating system host and guest. You should read the release notes for each version and try to decide on them.
