most of my Windows 8 desktop icons and programs disappeared
About 20 GB, programs and files located on my desktop Windows 8 have disappeared. There are several empty folders always on the desktop with all icons and programs into them now gone. I've never seen anything like that in all my years with PC and Mac. I see all the icons and the folder disappears somehow but it's like 95% of them from my desktop Windows 8 watch now 2.05 MB 20 GB before vs. The good thing is that there was no important personal data on my desk because they are on a separate with the external backup drive.
Hey Joe,
1. don't you perform all tasks as Refresh\Reset?
2. is it a security software installed on your computer?
This problem may occur because of virus.
I suggest you to use the Microsoft Safety Scanner and check if there is no virus.
Microsoft Safety Scanner: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: the Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again. The data files that are infected can be cleaned by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.
I suggest you to check the folder settings.
Windows 8 how: 19. Drives, folders and show hidden files
I suggest you to search program or a particular folder and check if you are able to access the same.

I have a Windows XP Home Edition with a breath main card computer. Replaced the Board, PS and other items. Then re-activated windows and everything was fine. Until the last moment, I rebooted after activating it. I have the problem that I have seen posted in a bit. When Windows has finished initializing all the desktop icons and task bar etc. disappear. Nothing works.
I can bring up the Task Manager and manually run programs, etc.
Believe me when I say I spent reviewing EACH reference to this problem... Yes 5 days and counting... Tried them all.
I also tried a repair of windows in place which ends without any problem (twice)... but still no icons or taskbar. I also ran several controls of virus, including one for the virus, which is usually the cause of this problem. (fsnimda3.exe), I tried all the ideas in another thread (page 9) and many other institutions. Before I did the reconstruction of the material I've cloned the original hard drive and have used the disc cloned juggling his original for the back. Even tried to reinstall the old disk and do a comparison of sector by sector, in the case where my cloning process missed something. In the 30 years I've been in the computer business I have never had a re - format a hard drive to solve a problem. BUT I think it will break my record.
I'm doing this as a favor for a friend. But at this point our friendship is really put to the test

Hello tfortexas, welcome.
I recommend to try this:
1 turn off your computer completely
2. turn on the system and start immediately by pressing the "F8" key until you reach a multiboot menu
3. Select "Safe Mode with network" in the list
4. wait until it boots into Windows. This may take a few minutes---
Once in Windows
---1. click on START
2. click on "all programs".
3. click on "Accessories".
4. click on "system tools."
5. click on "system restore."6 follow the prompts shown to restore your system to a date before the problem started. Although the system restore does not target the personal data, it is recommended that you back up all data such as music, photos and documents in case something is not bad.
Let us know,
Thank you!

My Windows 7 desktop icons will be a small box around them, the box is white and has perforated lines. Not a big deal, all simply boring. It is usually around the last icon I used. But sometimes randomly will appear around, most frequently the trash.
Have you tried to go to customize and change your theme? Maybe redefine things will help the issue. You can also try re - install (or looking for a newer version of) your graphics card driver. You can normally find this by going to the manufacturer of your computer site, click Help, and then by entering your model number.
A few guesses. Weird problem!

so first, I'll start with my system features:
Reference Dell Xps15zIntel Core i7 - 2640M to 2.8 ghzNVIDIA GT525M 2 GB8 GB RAMWindows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-bitSamsung PM830 SSD 2.5 "7 GB 218, 42 GB of freeMy laptop is now just a year and plays well outside some blue screen errors that have been fixed. The question now is time to start being significantly slower, especially the loading of the office. It takes 15 seconds to the password screen, to 45 seconds to reach the office and another 45 seconds to the taskbar, icons and things on the desktop to load. What is unusual is that during this black screen, my mouse is displayed, as well as for Advanced System Care 6 performance monitor (I doubt that this is the problem as I had installed for some time). I did the troubleshooting on mine and removed about half of my program without success. I also checked the health and performance of my SSD with SSD and SSD life and both seem to be very positive. I did not any changes to the Bios because I don't want to reinstall my OS and I'm not really sure on workarounds.I tried also to the difficulty of the task of explorer.exe, by checking the value of shell in the registry and it is correct, that it just load slowly at the start and each time I kill and then open it again in the Task Manager. Therefore, I think that my main problem is with explorer.exe loading slowly for some reason, I also removed some desktop icons and taskbar, although I doubt that it makes much difference.I've also done many scans with malware bytes pro and hitman pro, there is no virus on my computer.I appreciate any help, as it is very inconvenient for my more than 90 seconds start time, when he was about 20 when the laptop was new.Thank you very much for your help!P.S. I have about 60 GB of games installed on my pc via steam, if it makes a difference to delete someWhen my Windows 7 is slow to start, I do the following:
Start, then in the search box, type of race. In run, type "msconfig"(sans guillemets), and then click OK. ""In the general tab, make sure that selective startup is selected.Under Selective startup, clear the check box load startup items. Then go to the Startup tab and disable everything except software antivirus and important such as the microsoft. In addition, DO NOT disable any program that you do not recognize. This will disable any unnecessary background programs and prevent to launch at startup.NOTE: you can still start programs even if they do not start at startup. For example, your favorite game is one of them, and you the disabled. Now, the game does not start at startup, but if you click on the game icon later, it will always start, except maybe a bit slower when it starts. Basically, you are delaying the start of programmes which does not need to start at startup, you move a part of the start-up BACK period. The only programs that you do not disable is programs that actually need to start (like if it starts your computer will blow or something similar). -

I installed windows 7 and the desktop icons and bar tasks are enormous, go to Web pages, I have to use the scrollbar at the bottom of page to see the other half of the page - he said could also be a driver problem, but don't know what I'm looking for - someone can help?
Hello
Yes, well part of the problem from the point of view of Dell is the only "acceptable" operating system for the Office of series 4600 XP. So they have no drivers 'official' for any function of Windows 7!
But first I need more information on the video card. Try this (on the Dell site): 4600 system is supplied either with the built-in car video or a dedicated real card video. You should know that you got. Right-click of your mouse on the desktop, click on Properties in the next area, you see. This will bring you into the display properties. Now click on settings at the top right of this next area, click Next on the advance . Now, click on the adapter on the top. Just below the upper on this last box, you will see your listed video adapter.
You will need this information, regardless of where you get help. My best recommendation is that you go to the community of Dell and after a question here. Someone may have already found one, but there is nothing official since the operating system is not officially supported.
I'm sorry, there is nothing more I can do.
Kind regards

How can I restore my desktop icons and the taskbar icons
I tried to open a file with a program's .lnk and her was not recognized in the program, and now my desktop icons and my icons to the taskbar was converted into icons for the program. How to get this back? I need to know how to do this in Windows 7.
[Moved from comments]
There are some patches for the issue that you siding, but most of them requires registry changes that I do not say that they can cause several other problems. I recommend that you perform a system restore.
There are two ways to perform the system restore:
Menu start open, click Run and type cmd to open the command prompt.
Type CD... to book only c:\.
Type windows CD then CD System32, and then restore.
After once, you'll find yourself in c:\ windows\system32\restore >
Type restrui.exe press ENTER.
Once the system restore the open window then click on next to select any available restore point.
This process takes a few minutes to do the restore and please make sure that once this process has begun there wont be reversible and or you will lose all personal data.
Another way to perform the system restore is to open the safe mode by clicking on F8 at startup and check the option of safe mode, then still a dialog box opens to ask the system restore and then follow the steps above.

When I restart my PC Windows XP desktop icons auto arrange on the left side of the screen.
On the screen of "rearrange icons by", "Auto arrange" is unchecked. !!!
I use the app "icon Restorer" to move my icons to how I arranged the on the desktop, but every time that I reboot the desktop icons auto arrange themselves on the left side of the screen.
What can I do to keep my static desktop icons (and not self organization after reboot)?
.

Hi there, have you tried? Click with the right button on a blank space on your desktop, highlight the icons on the desktop, check on "locking up icons" and organize the uncheck'auto?or
securityguy14
When you say "LOCK icon on my desktop items" I assume you mean to stop to rearrange a reboot? If that's what you mean, so just copy paste then whats below into Notepad, then click on "file > save under...". "in the part superior, save it to the desktop. When you save the 'Save as type' change to 'Documents text (*.txt)' to 'All Files' and name it anything with a .reg extension. Close everything and then click on the file and select "merge". also, you want to make sure to add the part "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00".» This registry setting records the position of items on the desktop when you turn off
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings" = hex (3): 00, 00, 00, 00Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk...

Hello
Try the following steps:
1 "change screen resolution".
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/change-screen-resolution
2 lf above does not solve this > go to the website of your computer manufacturer > look for a driver download section > find your computer model number > then find your operating system > then download and instalt graphics / video / Chipset Drivers (depending on how it is formulated)
Then retry the screen resolution.
3. try a system restore to before that happened:
