MSMPENG. EXE CPU use

MSMPENG. EXE is using about 100% of my CPU and causing my XP Professional system bogged down or almost stop.  Is there a solution?

Please note: I have been using Windows Live OneCare (WLOC) years. Because Windows Live OneCare Support ends, I removed WLOC and installed Microsoft Security Essentials.  The issue of the 100% CPU usage with WLOC exists and persists with Microsoft Security Essentials.

I discovered that ate all my CPU. a program called 'Port' paper (used with my Xerox Scanner manufactured by "Nuance"), has 2 programs "Consistently" keep running and checking for updates.  I didn't really "running records" in "Task manager", while it was difficult to understand.  In my research, I found that a Microsoft program called ProcessExplorer (procexp.exe).  When activated, ProcessExplorer shows clearly (in the child like terms), which programs are underway and the amount of the CPU for each usage. I clicked on each file running, hit the Red check mark and "Stopped" the two processes.  My CPU usage went from 90 to 100% 5-10%, depending on what I was doing.

The most upsetting sad on these 2 constantly running programs is the fact that they never gave information about "Updates" to make the program run better or to fix bugs, these files 'ONLY' informed you of "buying new programs!  I forgot the exact name of the main file, but it was something like: "ISUM.exe" and the other CPU Hogs was "Agent.exe".

    Hi schuylerwoods,

    1. Did you the latest changes on the computer?
    2. You have a third-party security software installed on the computer?
    3. When exactly the computer freezes?

Msmpeng.exe process is used by the Microsoft Windows Defender to perform the procedures for scanning of spyware.

It is also possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.

I suggest that you configure the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

See section to learn more about how to clean boot.

    1. Click Start , and then click run.
    2. Type msconfig , and then click OK.
The System Configuration utility dialog box appears.

  • Mozzilla not respounding high cpu use plugin - container.exe computer is totally locked

I start up firefox, and go new. Sometimes it allows me to watch for a while. without warning mozilla not respounding computer is completely locked. I try to stop the program (mozilla) sometimes it allows me, and other times it takes several tries to stop. Mozilla said plugin - container.exe CPU high usage. Happened several times in recent weeks. I updated several times without success.

Like most of the commonly used web plugin, Flash is the most likely the cause. I don't know why the problems increased with Flash with the combination of Firefox 41 and 19 Flash. I think that people who work.

For now, I suggest the following to minimize potential problems with Flash in your troubleshooting:

    (1) to avoid unnecessary pain on the sites where the Flash is not really essential, try to set the Flash on Click-to-Play (Ask 'activation'). This will delay the Flash start on a page, until you approve.

To set 'Ask to activate', open the page modules using either:

    • CTRL + SHIFT + a
    • "3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Add-ons

In the left column, click on Plugins. Search 'Shockwave Flash' and always change 'enable' to 'ask to activate '.

With this setting, when you visit a site that wants to use the Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and usually (but not always) one of the following values: a link in a gray rectangle dark in the page or an information bar sliding between the toolbar and in the page area.

The plugin notification in the address bar icon usually resembles a little Lego block, dark gray. (If it is red, Flash must update.)

The delay in the activation of Flash can help distinguish between the problems caused on the initial page load, put in folds and script activation vs Flash/loading bar.

If you see a good reason to use Flash, and the site looks trustworthy, you can go ahead and click on the notification icon in the address bar to allow Flash. You can trust the site for the time being or permanently.

But some pages use Flash only for tracking or play ads, so if you do not see an immediate need for Flash, feel free to ignore the notification! He will just stand here in case you want to use it later.

    (2) consider rolling back at the end of the extended support of Flash 18. We make the security updates, which you can find if you scroll down half way down this page: https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html - it's for plugin-based browsers, MSI or EXE format should work.

Most likely, you need to remove Flash 19 before this installer works. This article has a link to the uninstaller program: https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/.../uninstall-flash-player-windows.html.

  • MsMpEng.exe slows down my computer

From time to time Windows Tak Manager shows that the MsMpEng.exe consumes a lot of time, often Reiver level of 50% and sometimes up to 92% of CPU. Leaving the task mamager long-running periods with CPU time showing MsMpEng.exe consumes by far the most time (second only to System Idle). I rebooted a few moments ago, it has already saved 5 times the amount of CPU used by my email client and IE9 7 times.

The question is - is this normal or is the corrupt program? It was created on 09/12/2012 is 19.9 KB, version: 4.1.522.0

A secondary question: If the file is normal is it possible to put a limit on CPU usage?

Product of a third party that is causing the high CPU usage, I found is Secunia PSI. When PSI scans it causes MsMpEng.exe perform some type of audit WHERE PSI is access to the files. I can get back to that and see if there is no may to stop what is happening.

Attempt to disable Load System Services through the system without result Configuration utility, because cpu cannot handle this function before of 'Services' system of pigs. Is there a way to access msconfig. through BACK? Have tried all modes safe mode, same problem.

I would exercise caution in handling things in the System Configuration utility.  If you disable the thing (s) evil, you could make your problem worse.

I suggest provide you a little more information on your system, run some scans for malware, then fix what's left more that needs fixing.

If you see services.exe equips in the Task Manager, suspect malware first, work to eliminate this possibility (with the scans below), then if you still have a problem, we can fix.

It makes no sense to try to solve problems on a system that could have malicious software on it.

You can also try to run system restore if you want, but I don't really know, it counts as 'fixing' of the problem.

Maybe someday the dialog box 'ask a question' forums XP will ask these questions automatically when a new thread is started so I don't have to ask every time.  It might even be possible to solve a problem in a single response when enough information is provided.

Please provide additional information on your system:

What is your system brand and model?

What is your Version of XP and the Service Pack?

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc..

The question was preceded by a loss of power, aborted reboot or abnormal termination?  (this includes the plug pulling, buttons power, remove the battery, etc.)

If the system works, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did not work properly?

No matter what you use for malware protection, perform the following analyses for malware.

  • "Task manager" and Norton AV cpu use 100% constantly, always etc.

I'm looking at my roommate pc and same problem. under Win XP, SP3.  To run any program takes about 5 full minutes.  CPU use 100% in Norton Anti Virus (NAV) or the Task Manager.  For now I'm just using taskmanger to see the %.  The only way to get to 0-2% is to restart in safe mode.  Go to start/run and msconfig, checked the only button "Load System Services", is went to 'Services' tab, hid Microsoft services and disabled all services, and then restart.  The 100% cpu is always attached to 100%, but the pc certainly significantly faster programs. (almost normal)  Does anyone know how to fix this?  I ran a full NAV of the system scan and a spybot search and destroy scan which finds that some cookies.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Palcouk, I found the problem.

For someone who has either taskmanager/Norton AV and it shows cpu 100% stable, but when your pc is restarted in safe mode (press F8 repeatedly after reboot), it seems to fall to 0-2%.  Download and run Process Explorer. Once executed with your cpu showing 100%, look under the CPU column.  Regardless of the program see you running the stronger use of the processor is the problem.  You can check this out, as I did by right clicking and "kill process".  Then check your CPU usage again.  Must be 0-2%, which is normal if you are running many programs.  In my case of roommate when I flew over the mouse program svhost using a 99% cpu, it has demonstrated a program that comes from a HP servoce.  It turns out that she has recently reinstalled the drivers of hp printer and somehow it corrupted his PC.  The fix was to reinstall the HP software on write corruption because we were able to uninstall all HP software.  She told me that she was trying to 'fix' the software earlier, but it's probably where corruption has come.  Problem solved.

Hi - I ended up having to do such things in the past as well. I just built a virtual machine added lots of processors and memory, then for the CPU, I used the script CPUBusy.vbs from VMware (Google search which) and down it load times so that he began to max real physical processors... For memory, I just opened a massive text file in Wordpad and scroll up and down it. This gave me the circumstances to test the alarms, just don't do as a busy time or use some dev ESX servers... The issue you describe is not really possible on a BlackBerry.  As a multitasking operating system, it will run quite happily CPU intensive workloads in the background while maintaining good performance of the user interface for the user.

If your treatment is an impact on the user, it is certainly because you run the processing on the thread of events, you should avoid.

I think that this article will be useful:
