NetApp and MPIO

I have a question about ALUA and Round Robin.

I use a NetApp 3140 in an active\active for a SAN configuration.  The NetApp is configured to use FCP.  All ESX hosts are vSphere 4.0.  The NMP was set to fixed on the ESX servers.  The hosts saw four paths for each LUN.  2 paths to the active controller and 2 path for the partner.

I then activated ALUA NetApp and igroups.  I put the default value of the VMware ESX PSP system by default ALUA ATAS to use the Round Robin PSP.  ESX host see only 2 paths to the LUN.  Is this correct?

resemble something wrong;

is it still 2 lanes after reboot?

could you please check what missing paths, for example the list nmp esxcli paths; esxcfg-mpath - b?

  • Questions of NetApp and vSwap...

Should I create a separate data store for each ESX host for the vSwap file? Is this beneficial to our design with SnapMirror. If we do that, are there ramifications when MRS. using?

It is certainly a good idea to set up a data bank in a Volume separate from Netapp for files vSwap.  It's because you don't want or need SnapMirror these data to your Destination of SM.  It is anyway the temporary data and would not be at the other end.  And since you can only set SM Sources at the volume level, you must make separate volumes.

If you haven't done so already, take a look on the NetApp VMWare best practices document:

    http://www.NetApp.com/us/library/technical-reports/tr-3428.html

He describes this among many other best practices.

I'm not an expert on SRM, so maybe someone who knows better can comment on that.

  • Backup exec 2012, issue of mpio san backup and ALA

We have a 4 TB File Server 2008, BONE is a physical server with hba to san volume where the files are located on.
so far, our backup exec server has an hba double iscis, with only using a port in the San.
in backup exec, I have created 8 jobs that run at the same time and creates 8 snapshots on the san to back up the file server.
on the side of san when snapshots are created, I can see that snapshots are assigned to the different ethernet ports, eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3, etc..
and start broadcasting our backup exec Server iscsi hba data, but since it is only using 1 connection her bottleneck through 1 Gbps.

If I install mpio on the backup exec server and configure the ports and mpio on the hba settings, when the san creates snapshots, the TI separate backups between the two connections of 1 GB on the hba iscis on the backup exec Server?

what I have to do all the other configurations on the San or switch layer2 (48 1 Gbps connections) that we use for our San?
I read somewhere that you would have to do something on the switch if you did 'aggregation of links' or 'bonding' but that mpio is completely different, and I wouldn't have to do something for her.

    any comments would be appreciated.

    Hello

Re: Collage/circuits only is not supported by the MS. iSCSI initiator  It's in the guide to iSCSi Ms.

RE: iSCSI hba.   What is a Broadcom iSCSI unloading mode or Qlogic iSCSI HBA?

So once you configure the other port on the DRUNK to be on the same SAN subnet, you can use MPIO.

You should already have installed the EQL HIT the DRINK server, is that correct?     If so, then run the Remote Setup Wizard in the Equallogic program folder.   There is an option "configure mpio.   Game to use only the iSCSI subnet, and you will see a checkbox for MPIO enabled shadow copy.  Which is enabled by default.

  • Storage circuits and dot1q FCoE

We have live from Netapp for the FIs storage configured as storage fcoe ports, the FIs are in mode switch CF. I see the netapp in FIs flogied so the CF part looks good. On the side of netapp, we have a 10 g interface, e1a, with an IP on this subject.  We have another interface of 10g, e1b, with VLAN attached to it for this interface sends and receives frames dot1q tag.

Documentation seems to imply that the ip traffic does not at all on an FCOE storage port.  Yet, e1a works very well is not the case of e1b.

Question 1: My theory is the plain ethernet on e1a works well but the dot1q tagging on e1b, is what actually does work on the FCOE storage port.  Am I wrong?

Question 2: I think to operate dot1q that I need to change to change the type of port FI FCOE destocking at the port of the unit.  Is it as simple as chaning the port enter through the UCS Manager?  Who takes the FCOE link offline or anything?

    Hi Tod,

Please make sure you have dot1q on Netapp and necessary FCoE VLAN are marked as native on FI and Netapp.

Whoever did this or similar already and is there anything I need to look out for gotcha general?

    See you soon

I can make the decision easy for you.

Marked NetApp Flash Accel as end of availability on March 13. If you do not have the ability to deploy it not more. Downloads are no longer available and existing facilities will not be supported after this year.

It's funny because he had released a new version (1.3) only a few weeks before and have been strongly touting it as central to their level of virtual storage.

No explanation or warning and for customers like me who just bought tens of thousands of dollars of value of SSDS with a goal from the use of this technology, a pill bitter to swallow.

    Hello

I saw a former NETAPP FAS 2020 connected storage and confiigured with the cluster of 4.1

Customer is polanning to install new vcenter and ESXi 5 new hosts and want to migrate virtual machines to new Cluster and get rid of the old because of some problems of old hosts

I heard some mouth sharing old storage Netapp Storage can cause some strange problems and can cause some virtual machines get corrupted

is that correct? strange problems known?

Sharing storage should be the correct way to migrate virtual machines safely to the news of ESXi

It's exactly the way I use to migrate virtual machines to a cluster. I've done a couple of times (also with 3.5/4.x/5.0 storage Netapp and ESXi) and never had corrupted VMs. what VMFS is designed for.

Of course, I would not share a LUN to ESXi hosts between different vCenters as final configuration but for migration, it is reasonable.

    Just know that:

-Do not upgreade to VMFS5 until all ESXi4 hosts are disconnected.

-Storage i/o Control does not work across multiple vCenters.

-migrate does not mean "vMotion" but: power off > remove inventory > add to the inventory > voltage (of course...)

Your help is appreciated as I'm learning NetApp, SRM before delivering the real deal in a few weeks.

    Thanks - Tom Miller

Hi Tom, looks like that give it refuses your connection request.  Maybe a few things:

You do not have the options httpd.admin.access or httpd.admin.enable the value is.  These can prevent access api http Basic.

If you try to make the https connection, you may have set the SRA use SSL (in ontap_config.txt on the srm server) but you don't have ssl turned on the netapp and have not followed the instructions to https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=1012531 , I doubt that is your problem, since you mention any you want ssl.

This problem might come after you go beyond the above, based on the errors you got you connect not even on the go.  With ontap 8.0.x you MUST give an address addresses IP of NFS field when you configure the SRA if you use NAS storage.  The IP addresses you put that there should be the addresses you want the ESX hosts to connect to on table when they do NFS to go up, could this be private IP addresses that are different from the IP address of the administration.  If you don't have a single IP (common when you play with SIM cards) and then with ontap 8.0.x you must put the admin IP in IP of NFS field addresses too.  In ontap 8.0.x you must use the field addresses IP NFS, even if your file server has one IP address, because it forces the SRA to ignore the other treats local loopback that exist in ontap 8, which does not exist in previous versions.

You must download and use the adapter version NetApp 1.4.3P1, you can get it on the site now by scrolling through the end of the list of software downloads and select the DRA and then typing in the 1.4.3P1 version.  None of the issues described above have been fixed for the release of P1, but it might help you to miss other problems once you are connected correctly.

  • Change of Machine virtual Swapfile location and impact on vMotion?

    Hello

I have a DRS and HA permit 2 Server ESXi 4.1 cluster. We are having a problem with the issue of disk space on the LUN for which we intend to change the location of the pagefile to a different SAN LUNS on each host ESXi virtual machine. I'll create 2 SAN LUNs, one for each host store the VM swap file. I want to know is what I SAN LUNS as a single server or servers in the area? If I do not these 2 LUNS for both servers then it will affect the vMotion? VMotion will be able to migrate a VM from one host if SAN LUN on which swapfile resides is not accessible from another host?

    Thanks in advance!

Please note what file is located on datastore (unshared) local when you vMotion, virtual machine from one esx host to another host esx, vMotion time increases because during vMotion swapfile even is migrated as it has the memory of the virtual machine state. So this explains why there is an impact.

Arrived at the point of storing VM Swap file on the shared storage. In fact, it's best practices for two reasons.

    1. you don't finish save swap files

    2. your storage space is used efficiently

    3. If you are replicating LUNS on remote site, you can exclude this LUN

I'm new to NetApp and my Director wants us to start our SAN NetAapp ESX host.

What should I do from a point of view ESX 4.0?

What are the benefits that they hope to achieve by having the option of SAN boot?  If thye want servers without hard drive, so I'd say go with a Flash drive and running ESXi on that... should provide the same benefit for performance and reliability.

You will need to to boot from SAN ISCSI or HBA Fiver and when it comes to the use of netapp I'll never anything other than NFS to ESX... unless someone is holding a gun to my head.
