NetApp and VCB

I am building a new server of vmware VCB for vmware environment. I'm confused about the best way to manage multiple paths.

Currently,.

I have the VCB Server zoned on all 8 ports on my file server. I don't have

one of my cluster vmware LUN presented to the VCB server for test

purposes.

In Device Manager, I see 8 drive of NetApp devices with the following ID:

Bus, target, LUN

0,2,16

0,3,16

0,4,16

0,5,16

0,0,16

0,1,16

0,2,16

0,3,16

Should I just manually turn off 7 devices? How can I determine that we're in a primary path?

Thanks in advance...

Jason

VCB 1.5 supports MPIO. Just install the driver MPIO of NetApp.

Check out my Guide to proven practices VCB on VI:OPS thus, it can be useful-> http://viops.vmware.com/home/docs/DOC-1392

I have a question about ALUA and Round Robin.

I use a NetApp 3140 in an active\active for a SAN configuration.  The NetApp is configured to use FCP.  All ESX hosts are vSphere 4.0.  The NMP was set to fixed on the ESX servers.  The hosts saw four paths for each LUN.  2 paths to the active controller and 2 path for the partner.

I then activated ALUA NetApp and igroups.  I put the default value of the VMware ESX PSP system by default ALUA ATAS to use the Round Robin PSP.  ESX host see only 2 paths to the LUN.  Is this correct?

    resemble something wrong;

is it still 2 lanes after reboot?

could you please check what missing paths, for example the list nmp esxcli paths; esxcfg-mpath - b?

  • VCenter and VCB

    Hello

I would like to know, if possible install Vcenter and VCB on the same Windows Server or it is not recommended?

    Thank you

vCenter and VCB share some components, so it is not recommended.  If you have only one physical machine, I would be set up with VCB and using VC in a virtual machine.  You can run VCB in a virtual machine as well, but then you don't get the san connectivity you get when VCB is physical.  Only method NBD (copy of disk based network) works with vcb in a virtual machine.

It is fully supported. And looks like a good setup for 3 or 4 guests. With that amount of guests that you will never fully use the VC server so it will be you gave extra bang for bucks...

  • Configuration of Backup Exec 12.5 and VCB with Windows 2008 64 bit

    Hello everyone

Try to install the update of VMware Consolidated Backup 1.5 1 with Backup Exec 12.5 on a Windows 2008

64-bit server.  Having a hard time getting the configuration to work.  When I try to do a restore via vCenter

I don't get "VMware Converter not found"

I installed Converter Stand Alone on the server, but I still get the same error.

Some would please the VCB and Backup Exec 12.5 on a Windows 2008 Setup process

    64-bit server?

    Thanks in advance...

Looks like you need to install vCentre Converter (the server vCentre himself) of what has been said.

Please give points for any helpful answer.

  • Questions of NetApp and vSwap...

Should I create a separate data store for each ESX host for the vSwap file? Is this beneficial to our design with SnapMirror. If we do that, are there ramifications when MRS. using?

It is certainly a good idea to set up a data bank in a Volume separate from Netapp for files vSwap.  It's because you don't want or need SnapMirror these data to your Destination of SM.  It is anyway the temporary data and would not be at the other end.  And since you can only set SM Sources at the volume level, you must make separate volumes.

If you haven't done so already, take a look on the NetApp VMWare best practices document:

    http://www.NetApp.com/us/library/technical-reports/tr-3428.html

He describes this among many other best practices.

I'm not an expert on SRM, so maybe someone who knows better can comment on that.

  • vSphere and VCB / license not available

We went from Standard Edition VI3 to vSphere 4 Standard + Storage VMotion. Since then, the 1.5 VCB backup fails.

I saw this message in the tasks of the vSphere client window:

Task name: reconfigure the virtual machine

Status: License not available for this operation

When I click on the 'Détails' link I got the message that you can see on the screenshot.

During execution of the backup VCB some messages "Reconfigure virtual computer" appear and are successful.

We use VCB mode "hotadd" and both VCB (user and proxy) have all the rights in vCenter (for testing).

This license (add hot VM?) or what else I miss? Like VMware hot add doesn't not part of vSphere standard, does this mean that our VI3 VCB Standard license went?

No, I doubt that there is no difference in behavior between virtual and physical proxies. If your backups are working, I think that they are returning to the NDB mode rather than using hot add. If they do not work, set the type of transport to the next during business day that we are working on solving the problem.

The question that we know currently has to do with VMware Data Recovery - this product uses the vcbAPI. However, the license error is the same.

I don't know if there is a fix for VCB 1.5 in the works, so I would recommend that you produce the SR, then we can follow it.

  • RDM and VCB Performance

I have RDMs finally backup via VCB no problem... other than the performance is terrible. The level of the files back ups seem to. But when I do a fullvm it seems to back up the whole ROW, without worrying whether it has data on it. I presented a lun 500 GB as a test, put a few text files, has launched a backup and it takes hours to complete. We are talking about a few kilobytes here. In this case, if I use the BEIM or native vcbmounter... same results. It is not the SAN... performance is stellar other than this activity. Is this expected behavior? VCB is not smart enough to know if there are data on the RDM or not? I've seen some other posts to this topic, but has never seen no resolution. Just curious, if you have any ideas. It is good to be a better way.

Ok. By default, VCB will back up fragmented file as long as you do not pass the-m or F - mode export flags is not transmitted:

    Flags of export:

-M: If, together, the disk is exported in a single file (monolithic).

When it is off (default), the disc is divided into several files of 2 GB.

-F: so together, the disk is exported in the form of disc "flat", with no optimization.

When it is off (default), the exported files disk will be more compact than

unused space in the disk image is not included in the exported file.

The BEST you will get with backups of type fashion SAN FullVM is about 1 GB / minute. It is still slow down with RDM, because they must be converted VMDK when FullVM saving. You know that if you practice a full recovery from the virtual machine (you'RE done this right?). When you retrieve a RDM saved using VCB, it becomes a VMDK.

RDM are das LUN in the native OS file system format (NTFS, ext3, etc), you may be better using an agent or perform file-level backups. Think about why you use a RDM. If you are recovering to a VMDK, what are the consequences. If there is not, amounted to a VMDK and be done with it. If there ARE implications use of files or agent in function of the backups. If this ROW is for a file server, or either method is fine. If they are boxes in the letters or databases, you better make backups of basis unless you REALLY know how to recover a database store or potentially incompatible mail. The driver of the sync and VSS providers are not a guarantee that you will be able to recover.

  • Backup Exec 12.5 and VCB - support requirements and agent

I noticed there is now an agent, which you can purchase from Symantec that allows you to save as many guests on the particular host windows as you want without any agent (though law enforcement officers are still required).

    http://eval.Symantec.com/mktginfo/Enterprise/other_resources/b-solution_brief-bews12.5_agent_vmware_virtual_infrastructure_09-2008.en-us.PDF

My question is this - from what I can find on the web, ESX 3.5 U3 does not support the latest integration modules Backup Exec (pre and post backup scripts etc.). So based on this, using Backup Exec 12.5 with VCB Symantec agent is needed giving you the GUI (no longer need to customize scripts for VM backups).

    Can someone please clarify this?

The Agent gives you a GUI with VCB integration. You should always install VCB, just not the integration kit. You can always do it the "old school" way. The modules BE did never seem to work 100% anyway and you can the House push something pre and post if you do not want to pay for the agent.

I think that VMware just stopped creating integration because the older kits kits are relatively stable. I tested with esx3.5u3/vc2.5u4 and have no problem. There is no update for VCB, so there is no update for the kits.

I know that you have done this before, then you probably haven't this info, but I just posted a guide on the VI:OPS on VCB as a generic facility backup->http://viops.vmware.com/home/docs/DOC-1392

  • Backup Exec and VCB proxy server configuration

    Hello

I am installing Backup Exec to back up my virtual machine on an ESX Server, but I get the following error:

    *Backup- VMVCB::ESX01VCGuestVm(DC)ha-datacenter(DC)vmserver03*

V-79-57344-38220 - Backup of the virtual machine 'server03' failed. VMware VCB framework reported the following error

Error: Failed to open the disk: Cannot access a SAN/iSCSI LUN backing this virtual disk. (Hint: Option "-m ndb" swtiches vcbMounter to network base disk access if this is what you want.)

It's my setup. I have an ESX Server connected to a San. I store my images on the SAN. I have Backup Exec installed on our file server that is also attached to the SAN and try to use this server as my VCB proxy server. I have installed on my server BE VCB framework and the enterprise Converter 3.03. I have setup a temporary staging that the server can access to place its snapshots on.

My BE\VCB proxy server cannot access the SAN LUN that holds the images. My understanding of the process is that of BE I navigate on the ESX Server and select the virtual machine, I want to backup, and because the ESX Server can access the SAN LUNS where VM images are stored throughout the process of alignment of the image and place in the temporary storage area so that BE can then throw tape should work.

Can someone help to solve my problem?

    See you soon

Yes, it is the intention of the VCB.  Take the resources needed to run the backup out of the host and on the VCB proxy server.  You can define VCB to use the 'LAN' mode which backs the service console of the virtual computer on the network, but it is slower and puts more pressure on the host.

Make sure you carefully follow the VCB document.  There are some things you need to do on the proxy before presenting the LUN as cutting diskpart automount. If you don't there is a chance that the lun might get corrupted and your VM would go bye-bye.

  • Restore virtual machines with Netbackup and VCB

I just Netbackup 6.5.2 and using VCB 1.5.  When I create my backups, it makes the .img files.  When I try to restore using Netbackup, it won't recognize backups from windows NT and not Flash.  And VM converter does not recognize the .img files.  So, how can I restore, what am I am I doing wrong?

Hello.  The NetBackup .img files are not accessible directly.  They are used internally by NetBackup.

When the only restore files vmdk (virtual machine complete), NetBackup 6.5.2 supports two types of restorations.  First of all, you can automatically perform a restore of the entire virtual machine by using the free VMware Converter component.  The second method involves all first restore VMware vmdk and then manually by your restoration.

These processes are described in the document of NetBackup 6.5.2 update which can be found here:

  • Question of NetApp and SRM

    Hello
