  Would I be able to upgrade to windows 7 without any problem and safely?

Then, I took the step to stop this program, Lenovo to run and then remove the text files.

  I tried it twice.  I install Windows 7 Professional 64 - bit on a ThinkPad T61.  After installation and activation successful Windows, I tried Windows updates.  The 'check updates' never ends.  After the first installation of Windows, I tried all sorts of bugs found either here or other Windows Help Web sites, does not.  So I reinstalled Windows, but with the same result.

  After that the first installation was impossible to install updates, I received the Windows Update stand-alone Installer and downloaded the stand-alone files for updates.  Would install things like IE updates, but no security update would install, as well as most other updates.  Yet once, just standalone Setup would continue to search for already installed updates without ever ending.

  Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem?

  I spent $4 on a 80 wire cable IDE (to replace the 40-wire cable I used) and I was finally able to get Windows XP installed today.

I guess the age of the cable, but I actually had multiple failures with a whole new thread 40 I had just bought.   Install Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit > Windows automatically updated and plug the Ethernet cable > define a GPO where the computer waiting for 45 to 60 minutes after installation of updates (so the msi may end in the background, and I do not interrupt the installation) > the PC will restart > more update swill be downloaded and installed > wait due to the policy of GPO before reboot > Reboot > do it until it's over. > wake up with a PC fully patched 7-9 hours later.
