New virtual file server using an existing virtual disk

Hello world

Recently, I update our hosts ESX3.02 3 vSphere4. Everything went well

I am now trying to build new Server 2008 R2 64-bit virtual machines. I just finished the print server and am now looking at the level of the file server.

I created the virtual machine and configured the latter as I want with a boot partition and the C drive with the installed operating system... The next step is to sort the data side, i.e. the readers of corporate network. Rather than create and assign the new virtual disks to the new server and a data copy server current to the new, I think a much more simple and less time would be to point to my new file server on the virtual disks of current servers, then assign drive letters in Windows Server.

I suspect that it is not possible to have two servers sharing the discs at the same time, but this isn't a problem that, off hours, I close the current, start a new, point to the current virtual disks, assign letters D and E test and then delete the old file server.

Is this possible and if so what are the implications re file sharing, permissions etc.? The current folder and the file ACL to stay?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

You are right. You can detach a disk from a Windows VM and attach it to the other. You can "do simultaneously, unless you use some sort of cluster management system.

About the ACL, I am not able to guarantee that they will continue, but I think that NTFS is "good enough" to do this.

  • Add a new virtual disk to a very critical existing VM

    Hi all,

My question is very simple. I have to add a new virtual disk to an existing Windows Server 2008 Standard virtual machine (we use vSphere 5). This machine

is very critical, because it is the server of the company files. Is there a risk to add the new virtual disk on the virtual computer? Is it better to add it with the virtual machine died, or can I also in the virtual machine running without risk? I tried with a virtual test machine and everything works fine and I know to be very paranoid, but in this moment I still feel a great responsibility on me.

    Thank you all.

There is nothing wrong by adding a disk to a virtual machine, it is HOT add, that is the advantage of the SCSI layer. VMDK all use a virtual scsi controller and it is hot add capable. SO just, add it and partition.

  • What are the steps to create, format and install a new virtual disk in Windows

I swear I've scoured the Internet for days trying to find the details of this process, and I'm embarrassed to have failed in my quest to understand what I must be a very simple thing.  The best I can do is this:

Step 1: Create a new vmdk using vmware-vdiskmanager

    Step 2:?

Step 3: Get your vmdk newly formatted using vmware-mount, or using "Map Virtual Disk" of the Workstation option

Now, you will see that somewhere between step 1 and 3, it is an essential step of the new vmdk format so that it can be recognized and mounted.  Simply, I can't find any example online how to do this.  I just know someone will say "just attach to a virtual machine and format her", to which my answer is "how?  It won't let me get an unformatted disk.  When I try to go directly to step 3 after step 1, I get the following error, "error reading volume information.  Please select another file to disk.

    Add the button.

Select "hard drive".  Follow the instructions in the wizard.  At the selection of create new floppy or use existing, select "Use an existing virtual disk" and find the vmdk file, you have created.

  • Index of the Windows Search Service on a file server used by Citrix/TS clients?

Am really struggling to tackle this and write the change command of this place.

If we have a file server to Server 2008 R2 with the installed file server role and the role or function of the Windows Search Service deployed (with IFilter filters and suitable for indexing added directories)-will be a Server 2008 R2 TS/Citrix user research their mapped drive using the index stored on the file server?  Or the index must be created on each server by connecting to the file server?  Can't seem to find an answer final yay or not in spite of several rounds of the documentation.

  • No boot disk found during the installation of windows 7 in the new hard drive by using the original recovery disk

    Hello

My laptop is HP - Pavilion dv6 2165-tx. My old hard drive damaged and so bought a new one.

New hard drive works fine. (He went from main hard drive test)

Now, to install the operating system, when I insert the recovery disc in my CD, I get the error message-"no boot device press a key after the insterting startup disk."

How can I go about this now?

    Thank you for your contributions.

I've installed windows 7 using my recovery disk. Problem is that my objective optical drive was not clean, which resulted in the error.

  • need to migrate data to a new virtual machine

Currently I have a W2K3 off warranty, physical file server. I created a file in Vmware VM W2K8 server which will replace previously mentioned W2k3 server. My data for hosts vSphere 4 and all the physical servers are stored on a CF CX 410 San. My questions are: how to get the data to my new virtual machine? Do I need to migrate? Redirect? Present it? Is there a tool in VMware? Perform this at the level of the logic unit number? I can restore from tape to complete backup using the backup software?

To say the least, I am a little confused and would appreciate any ideas, I'm sure there is more than one way. Thank you.

    You have a few options.

Use RDM using the link to the Tunis above.

Create a new virtual disk in virtual machines and use robocopy to copy the data from the physical server to the virtual machines.

If the has an option of CIFS SAN then use it directly to files on the server.

  • Re-create a virtual disk (RAID 1) of two existing drives

After several power outages, my server Dell PowerEdge T110 ii starts plu. The virtual disk (RAID 1) has disappeared, but the two physical disks are still visible and a State of readiness.

Is it possible to create a virtual disk Raid1 of two existing disk which was composed the original virtual disk without losing any data?

If this is not possible, is there a way to recover the data (image) and re - create a new virtual disk?

I hope someone can help me.

I don't think, because the process would have initialized the disc, which formats.

  • Convert virtual disk from IDE to SCSI now Server 2008 does not start

    Hi all

I hope that one of you guys can solve my problem.

I'm new to vmware and have managed to convert my 2008 physical server to a virtual server, but when this virtual disk has been set to IDE, I read that I need to use SCSI for better performance then I attributed a new virtual disk to my server and clone the IDE hard drive on the SCSI disk using EASEUS disk copy software.

After I cloned the drive I removed the IDE hard disk but my server continues to display the BSOD 0x0000007b error (inaccessible boot volume). I can't start normally or through safe mode. If I try to use the recovery mode no drives appear.

I use the LSI Logic SAS controller type and have tried the parallel LSI Logic Controller without result.

Is it possible to fix my guest operating system, without having to reinstall?

    Thank you very much

  • Add a virtual disk to an existing virtual machine.

    Hello

Anyone know what would be the best way to create an action to add a new virtual disk (hard) to an existing virtual computer? I have found no existing action/workflow, and I do not know where to start.

    Thank you

    Hey Mikael,.

There is a "workflow" for this!

Library / vCenter / Virtual Machine Management / management of devices / add a disk.

This workflow, you can add a VMDK to a virtual machine.

  • Impossible to expand virtual machine using workstation 8.04 disk

    Hello

I recently installed workstation 8.04 on my Vista 32 with no problems.

Then, I installed Win 7 ultimate in my computer again without any problems.

Now, I tried to extend the VM disk but got the error below:

There is not enough space on the file system for the selected operation.

There are 19 GB free on the host (Vista) and I expanded only VM 5 GB hard drive, but I still get the same error.

The virtual computer is in one file.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I guess that the virtual disk to the virtual machine is a unique hard (not a 2 GB sparse disk) file. In this case temporarily resize the virtual disk requires additional disk space, because the content of the virtual disk is copied to the new virtual disk file.

  • How to record a video cut like a new video file for later use in other projects

Hello.  I am new to Adobe Premiere and this might be a really stupid question, but it is possible to take a slice of video, a piece out of it and record this song like a new video file to use in several sequences?  For example, I have a videotape of interviews with a 100th birthday that I have attended and I would like to connect different comments in different parts of a video that I do.  But I would like to create splices of all comments I recorded, consider each comment and then organize the comments on the paper and then go back and put the clips of commentary in different parts of the video master.  How to connect the original video into smaller pieces and set them aside so I can embed clips at a later date?  I know I can cut video and leave it in my main video but I really want to put aside.  A bit like cropping of a picture and make a backup from the cropped image under a different name, so I can create a collage of pictures that result later, I crop.

If all goes well, that makes sense.  I have until December to finish this video wife of Grandpa will celebrate HIS 100th and I would like to have this video to see the family.

    Thanks in advance.

  • OpenManage for VMWare ESXi has no possibility of tasks of virtual disk

OMSA v 7.1 and 7.2 for Windows (and earlier versions) allow the user to perform many tasks on virtual disks, including reconfiguring - expand a RAID array with a new drive.

This is not true for managing open for VMWare ESXi - although you can monitor the status of the RAID and disks with the browser of the OMSA interface type, you cannot perform tasks - can not even make a high beam Flash.

It is a huge problem, because the PERC controllers (H700 and H800, for example) don't allow you to develop virtual using hard drives not Dell disks when you try this during startup in the bios.  (These controllers only allows you to create new virtual disks using drives not Dell).

This test was conducted using the latest firmware (12.10.4 - 0001 A10) and drivers for the H700 and H800 and multi-server r610 ESXi 5.1.

Other people with VMWare have been affected by the present?  The only solution is to have two player networks connected to the computer, and create a simple Windows with OMSA, boot in Windows Server to expand the table using OMSA for Windows.

I would be interested in the comments of others, including those of Dell.  We spent hours on the phone with Dell; This seems to be the only solution.  (Yes, Dell released a firmware version last year that has ceased blocking non Dell readers, but it only works for the creation of a new virtual disk, do not expanding one existing).

Yes.  It came through a discussion in the Dell | Servers | Discussion of the RAID community.

    en.Community.Dell.com/.../20263442.aspx

There is a CD bootable linux called OMSA Live that you download from PowerEdge (linux OS) systems management.

This OMSA PERC H700 and H800 control and allows you to do everything.  When you reconfigure the RAID and the PERC card starts the reconstruction, although it seems risky, you can restart under VMware and the reconstruction of the RAID continues on.  And you can analyze with OMSA for VMware.
