Portege R500: no action when a music or other disc is inserted

My new (30 days) Portege R500 took just the same problem.

The DVD player is always on (indicator lite) and seems to be trying to read the discs but
-No file shown in windows Explorer
-no action when a music disc or another type that is defined for "autoplay" is inserted.
It worked when I got it.

Anyone from Toshiba tell me whether there is a systemic hardware problem?
There are other posts that seem to have the same problem?

Thank you

Hello

> no file shown in windows Explorer
I think that you should boot from the recovery disc and should reinstall the new OS.
Then check if your CD/DVD drive would recognize the inserted disc.
In addition, you must remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters completely from the following registry key values:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In many cases, it helps.

If two procedures will not help a Toshiba ASP should take a look on this laptop and check the STRANGE.
Perhaps the problem could be related to hardware (I don't think)

    Hello

We have several laptops from Toshiba Portege R500 used by mobile workers.
When they are in the Office that they start fine (connected to the network).

But when not connected to the network, they take several minutes to start up to the logon screen.
I checked the boot sequence and the LAN is the last still start on the internal HARD disk.

No idea why they are so slow start when not connected?

    Hello

I understand that your notebook is in the field and use parameters that are applied in the company network.

Maybe the Vista (or XP) looking for these settings if you are not connected to the office network and the entire procedure takes a little longer

May I ask what anti-virus do you use?
Sometimes antivirus software might affect the start and might slow the procedure as a whole.

  • Portege R100: extraction failure when you use the recovery disc 1

    Hello

Restart of my r100 is an ongoing saga. I managed to acquire a px1055e with cable of 16-bit pcmcia card (also a bios updated to 1.6 just in case where). I tried to use my original recovery CD but I now get "failed to extract" always when disk 1 is in half way through the partition of loading. It is interesting to try a bootable windows xp cd and if my hard drive is damaged, what should I do.

    Appreciate any help,

    Adam

    Hello Adam

You should try to use the facilities of Microsoft CD and see if the installation procedure will run at the end. It is not easy to say anything on the recovery of installation with a CD. May be defective CD or disk HARD making trouble.

Try to use the original Microsoft CD and let us know what happens. If the problem persists I would recommend you to check the HARD drive.

  • Portege R500: What DVI port duplicator would be compatible

    Hello

Does anyone know what DVI port duplicator supports the portege R500 laptop.
When I look at the product and its accessories none of the replicators of ports lists the portege R500 as a notebook taken in charge.

Maybe there isn't one right now?

    Hello

I also used the Web from Toshiba site Options & accessories search and found the following:

    -Slim Port Replicator 2 PA3603E-1PRP

  • Portege R500 stops automatically

Portege R500 stops automatically when it is connected to the power for a certain period.
It comes on Toshiba power cable and cable igo juice. Tends to happen when it's hot, with or without battery.

Yellow flashes 2 long, short 2, 1 x long, 3 short. Only way to reset is to subscribe to the battery and the power cable.
Occurred after be connected for some time and will work only on power outlet after a long wait.
Now the case more often, even if the connection to the laptop isn't hot.

This is the 3rd generation of this laptop I've had over the last 10 years and with the memory of mid-life upgrade, they seem to be very robust and this is the fundamental problem only that I have met.

    Are there patches?

    Hello

The blink code means that a hardware problem has been detected on the motherboard.
So I think this could be a hardware related issue and not an overheating problem
    But nothing is impossible
You can try to clean the cooling fans/modules with a jet of compressed air
Would it help to remove dust from the computer laptop cooling grids
This workaround is useful if the laptop temperature is too high and the laptop stops automatically to avoid that the pieces of equipment against damage

    Check and try

I am using Toshiba Portege R500 (PPR50E) with Windows XP Professional (SP3).

The problem is the 'secret' doesnot portable speaker when I connect the headphones. The audio is coming from headphones and speakers of the laptop. It is verymuch irritating when you do voice chat. Is there a solution for this problem?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hello

I guess you have a Realtek audio chip.
In Control Panel, you should find the Realtek HD audio Manager.

The Audio i/o tab contains settings.
I put t remember exactly how they call but you will see the audio jacks.
Here, you will need to right click and change the setting.

Please let us know how it works with Windows XP Home edition.

  • Portege R500 - network Constant interruptions

I have a Portege R500 with Windows XP (SP3 now, but same problem with SP2 and same problem before and after all reinstall them), and the network continues to interrupt. It's desperately irritating, because I work a lot of ssh connections, and almost every time the connection breaks I lose some work. The best of cases, it's that I have to log in again and continue where I was.

This happens regardless of whether I use WIFI or wired network, and sometimes little matter where I am - home, office, coffee internet, that, is not my connection. The network is interrupted every 15-30 minutes, and sometimes as I type or loading a page, while other times it seems just to occur. It is usually easy to tell when it happens, because all the ssh connections instantly hang, all my messenger connections are broken and Outlook complains that he has lost the connection to the Exchange Server. The connections Outlook and messenger do not realize anything is wrong before the connection started actually working again, which has probably something to do with TCP or ICMP messages finally get through, but it's really strange that TCP is not only address the problem transparently - the physical connection is never interrupted for long.

I guess that it probably has something to do with energy saving, but I have been unable to resolve in setting energy saving settings. Also, I have the same problem, regardless of the question of whether the laptop is powered.

(Probably?) it is not a hardware failure, because I don't have the same problem in Ubuntu Linux and memtest does not report the errors of memory. (Speaking of which, is there a memory testing tool or self test tool integrated with this laptop?).

Any suggestion would be appreciated. I tried calling the number of local support twice, but it didn't help much to get there.

Thanks a lot for this great info

  • Portege R500: Cannot restore Vista using Toshiba recovery disks

I downgraded Vista to XP loaded factory.
However, I would now like to restore back to Vista.

    I have disc 1 & 2 ' product Recovery DVD-Rom; Portege R500 disks.
They are also marked "Windows Vista Business (SSD/PATA)" has been provided by Toshiba.

I don't know how to use these discs to restore my operating system to Windows Vista. When I insert disc 1 and after loading some files, a message "cannot read the file source or disk - Preinst2.SWM" and I can not go any further.

An instruction step by step would be greatly appreciated

I wonder why you receive two recovery disks. As far as I know Toshiba Vista Recovery image is stored on a DVD.
Perhaps you have received two CD

In any case, have you tried to boot from the second disk? I mean the second recovery CD?

Usually, recovery is not very sensitive. You must boot from the disc and should follow the instructions on the screen.

The error cannot read from the source file or disk - Preinst2.SWM looks like a little to the Conference on disarmament would not readable or the CD/DVD drive would not read the disc properly.

  • Portege R500 - replacement of the keyboard - success

After buying a new keyboard for the R500 on EBay about a year ago, I finally blew the courage to replace a badly scratched by a new keyboard. The reason I've waited? I was worried about how to get out the old keyboard (it is locked down to the chassis, and it was obvious that I have would hurt one during the withdrawal.

There is a nice write-up general on how to disassemble a R500 here:
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-R500/disassemble-laptop-remove-hard-drive.htm

The description above is not to discuss the keyboard however, so here's some additional information and tips:

    * Read this whole procedure before you start - it's simple, but not for the faint of heart.

    * Shut down, unplug the power, remove the battery.

    * Make sure that you have the correct keyboard for your model. The US keyboard is p/n G83C000903US for example. One I removed was a Rev 1 and a new one, I had a Rev 2 (don't know the difference - they look identical). They can get as low as $40-mais check the part number before you buy.

    * The keyboard connector is located under the computer, and so you will have to take off from the bottom, carefully following the instructions in the link above.

A couple of notes: (a) the cable Ribbon PCMCIA connector must be opened to disconnect the cable, as this is the only thing that prevents you from removing the bottom of the computer. You can easily do so through access memory on the back door, but BE careful not to damage the cable lock. It works by switch to the top the little plastic lever that is held in place by small pieces of plastic on the sides of the connector that flex * a little *. Be gentle with this connector. When you put it back later-connector, if you placed the cable all the way into the connector, you can lock with only slight pressure down on the connector, and it will snap into place.

    (b) there are other types of cable Ribbon connectors use too. For example, to unlock the keyboard connector, now visible also on the bottom of the deck, slide both ends of the connector in the direction where the cable plugs in. They are snug and will only move about 1/4 ", be gentle but firm.

    (c) the two tiny connectors blocks free access to the water of the keyboard do not have locks on them. We're a band with only a few drivers, and one is a red and white power connector. Just pull out them. All the other connectors, you will probably miss through requires unlocking, so be careful!

_Now back to the keyboard: _

Once you have managed to disconnect his cable on the bottom, turn the laptop and start to remove the keyboard on the edges. It is supported by many small pieces of sticky tape, 2 faces, and that's it. As the base of the keyboard is made of aluminum, it is likely that you will distort the keyboard a bit as release you it, even though it may be downplayed maybe using a tool like a rule or something plastic and pry with it. Take care of not to damage the connector of the Ribbon and try to ignore these scary cracking sounds that identify each section!

Once you have turned it off, you must remove any excess tape before starting point and again put a bunch of small pieces of new, good quality 2-sided tape (such as 3 m). No need to use anything stronger or thicker - just put a bunch of parts everywhere on the base, especially near the edges and the space key.

Now, finally, turn the keyboard in position, making sure that you screw the connector back Ribbon through to the correct place. Turn the laptop over and re - insert and lock the Ribbon connector (make sure that it is directly and fully forward lock connector). All other connectors back in too. Then come back and push down hard on all sections.

Re-assembling, taking care to put the 4 mm and 6 mm screws in the right places and a tiny on the side.

Cross your fingers and turn it on!

    Good luck!

    Thank mate for this review.
Generally the replacement of keyboard is not really complicated and someone with small technician skills should be able to replace it

My Portege R500 arrested last night when displaying "my pictures" and I was not able to do restart upward.

I removed the battery and turn the direct power, but when I power on I get the Toshiba with "Intel" page in the lower right and five icons feature lower downtown.

It will not boot to Windows, I know I should know, but I "think" it works under XP.

I have no recovery disks, he passed to us my father in law a few years ago and no supported drives has come that I can find.

    Hey,.

Can you please verify certain things?

You can start in safe mode? After you have powered on the notebook press key F8 to access the Windows Advanced Boot menu and select mode.

If you cannot access the t Windows Advanced Boot menu, you must check the BIOS if the HARD drive is recognized correctly.

  • Portege R500 - some parameters of the touchpad are unavailable

    Hello

I have a Portege R500 which have recently had an unfortunate encounter with the ground and needed a new hard drive, among other things; So it is like new in the aspect of the software.

Since to resume the touchpad does not scroll.
I checked the Control Panel, and it gives me only options for the number of lines per click of the scroll wheel down, so that it looks like, he thinks it's a normal mouse.

In addition, it has no icon in the notification area on the taskbar to display when you press the key, which he was, and you can access a lot of parameters such as the size of the area of scroll etc...
I checked the driver and it is the same as that available in the downloads section if it is not that, but I can find no trace of this another piece of software anywhere.

Anyone know where I can download the icon and its parameters of support or any other means to scroll?
    Thank you

It seems that you have not installed some needed touchpad driver.
Driver Toshiba page provides an Alps Touch Pad Driver for Portege R500 Electric.
    Install it!

Then you can check the settings in the control panel-> mouse-> hardware-> touchpad properties

    Welcome them

  • Portege R500 - start of fingerprinting release

    Greetings.

I have a problem with my Porteg R500 with HARD drive. I activated the "Single Sign on" in order to use my fingerprint only once a boot, the heading "Power Pre-os by fingerprints" (TrueSite Access Manager software).
When I turn on my laptop, after the BIOS check, I wonder to slide my finger on the sensor. I do, but the system hangs upward, with the screenshot of software TrueSite still. No way to use the keyboard (without CTRL-ALT-DEL allowed; if you press CAPS LOCK, SHIFT, there no led lights, etc.), and he remains hung up that I've shut it down by holding the power button.

Anyone know what's the problem? My BIOS firmware is updated (version 1.60)

    Thank you.

    Hello

Has this issue been published since the beginning? I mean from day of purchase?

In my view the OS and Access Manager software TrueSite is confused upward.
Who knows why, but I think you have to use your Toshiba recovery disc and put the laptop to the factory setting.
Then update the AuthenTec fingerprint software.

Then, you can follow with the configuration of the fingerprint as described in the help of AuthenTec.

I think you should check this!

  • Portege R500 - configure the parser on the Port Replicator

The system is Portege R500 with a port replicator Port MS Vista running. Port replicator has a Philips 19 "LCD monitor

System has BEEN configured so that when the system was in the duplicator monitor 19 "inches would be active and system monitor is inactive.

But, a few days before the following events occur, when the system is in the port replicator and its turned on screen (the one with the mobile progress indicator) Windows startup is displayed on the Port Replicator monitor, then the screen turns white and displays them on the screen on the monitor system, after entering the desktop on the monitor system.

I live in a remote area, so I can't pop in the store of the local computer to ask for help.

I would appreciate someone to give me some guidance as to where it configures the port replicator monitor configuration. I looked at the section Configuration screen Control Panel but it seems to be the performance of two monitors, it appears not to address the peculiarities of a laptop computer with a port replicator configuration
