Reset SMC

Hello.

I am a member on these forums and I always want to learn new things.

What is the SMC reset?

When is it used?

It will erase all personal data files?

As shown on the reset of the controller of system of management (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

In some situations, you may need to reset the System Management Controller (SMC your computer). Learn to identify these conditions and to reset the SMC on Macs with Intel processors.

The MSC is responsible for many features of low level on Macs with Intel processors. These functions include:

  • Respond to the pressures on the power button
  • Meet the display of opening and closing on portable Macs
  • Battery management
  • Thermal management
  • The SMS (motion sensor sudden)
  • Detection of ambient light
  • The keyboard backlight
  • The status indicator light (SIL) management
  • Battery status lights
  • Selection of an external (instead of internal) video source for some iMac displays

Some indicators are:

Fans

  • The computer fans operate at high speed, even if the computer does not have a very heavy use and is properly ventilated.

Lights

  • The backlight on the keypad seems to behave correctly (on Macs with this feature).
  • The status indicator light (SIL) seems to behave correctly (on Mac computers have a SIL).
  • Battery LEDs, if present, appear to behave incorrectly (on portable computers that use non-removable batteries).
  • The backlight of the screen does not correctly to changes in ambient light on Macs with this feature.

Power

  • The computer does not respond to the when you press the power button.
  • A Mac laptop does not respond correctly when you close or open the cover.
  • The computer sleeps or stops unexpectedly.
  • The battery does not seem to load correctly.
  • The MagSafe LED power adapter does not seem to indicate the correct activity.

The system performance

  • The computer is running unusually slowly although it does not abnormally high CPU utilization.
  • Application icons can "bounce" on the dock for a while at the launch.
  • Applications may not work correctly or may stop responding after the opening.

Video

  • A computer that supports target display mode does not switch in or out of target display mode as expected.
  • Target a computer that supports target display mode toggle in or out of view at unexpected times.

Enlightenment of port

And no, it will not erase all personal files.

Reset SMC. removable or non-removable battery?

    Nice day!

I am considering a SMC reset.

After reading this thread - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

However, I don't know if I follow the steps:

-If the battery is good behaviour

    or steps

    - If the battery is removable.

    My SN is C1 * TY3

Theoretically my battery is removable, but I'm not sure if it is removable, in general, or if it means that he is or is not a "sliding door", as was the case on some previous models. Obviously the text found in ' Reset of the SMC on Mac Laptops ' more or less indicates that mine is non-removable, but I'm just looking for that very few insurance telling me stop worrying...: Pei

    Thank you!!!

  • IMac will not close - have reset SMC/PRAM etc - what to do next?

I have an iMac 2011 (impossible to get more info as it "attempts" to close) - El Captain fully patched.

    Here's what I did:

    Reset the SMC

    Reset the PRam

Checked and run repair disk (no problem)

don't made sure no programs or applications were open before you stop (via command pkill)

This computer shutsdown only when I press the power button.

That then should check or just dropkick the POS?

(super glad I backed up everything and moved to external hard drive)

It also takes forever to start, when I restart it. Charge of Apple logo, it fills up half, screen turns white, 10 minutes later, it loads the OS.

  • Reset SMC fails to fix the problem of fan

So I tried to solve a problem where my fans are running overtime on my end 2011 MBP 13 ". I did a reset of the PRAM and SMC. However, I'm not sure that the SMC reset has never really worked. In the past when perform SCM restores, I remember that my magsafe adaptor change color, this was not past. The problem with the fans running continues. I tried several times, it doesn't seem to work.

I don't know that I'm following the correct procedure, taking the left SHIFT-control-option and power keys at the same time and releasing at the same time.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

The fan or sensor is maybe defective.  Run Apple Hardware Test:

    https://support.Apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is inconclusive.

Open the MBP and see if there is dust and debris inside.  If so, clean.

    Ciao.

  • MacBook Air battery does not load after resetting SMC

Hi all, hope you can help me with this. My model of Macbook Air early 2014 seems to have some problems with its battery. The battery status says "do not load" and it is stuck at 74%. My charger light is still red and I tried to check the status of the battery, it is said to be normal; also I have reset the SMC and all that stuff that is suggested on the discussion Forum, but still it is of no use. Someone had a similar problem before?

Try resetting the SMC two times more.

  • IMac Fan AFTER Reset SMC fort

I got my iMac for about 6 years now. It is used occasionally and only off (also unplugged) when we leave the city or during a severe storm. When we came back from a two week stay with the family for Christmas, we plugged the iMac back in and turned on. Now, it makes a loud fan noise. I read that the SMC reset will solve the problem, but in my case, the MSC would have been reset with the two week closed.  We did shut down the computer and restart it (reset the SMC a second time) and still have the same question.

    Thanks for any help.

  • MacBook Pro Late 2011 startup questions - SMC reset necessary after each shut down.

I was asked to look at a friends end 2011 Macbook Pro.

Initially, it seemed dead. No power, no response. I did the Shift + Command + control + Power to try to reset the SMC nothing helps.

I opened the back and disconnected the battery and the magsafe. I help the power button down for 5 seconds. reconnected the dough tried power on and it didn't work until I plugged the magsafe. Ah ha I thought it, BUT. Once started it works very well, some check everything looks good and battery shows healthy with 70% of load.

I restart the machine and it starts fine. HOWEVER. I stop the machine and I'm back to square one. Power supply photo and battery connected.

So I rinse and repeat. battery disconnect power hold button wait 5 plug in back and then turn it on. As before it works only after the power supply was ALSO connected. to test this situation I tried again without connecting the battery and just the power supply. Since then only the battery was in, nothing until that I plugged the battery ALSO.

So the Macbook will start only after a stop if the battery and power are both removed, button / help for 5 then BOTH the power and battery are reconnected.

I've seen people with similar questions but no one seems the specific symptoms that it requires this reset each STOP but restarts not on the list.

    Clues, help, correct?

  • Thunderbolt display is no longer detected

I have a late 2013, MacBook Pro and a 27 inch Thunderbolt display, bought in September 2014. I use the screen without problems since then. But today the display is no longer detected. I got the MacBook disconnected from the screen, which has been briefly disconnected from the sector. (It was a power outage scheduled as it happens, but I don't see how that makes a difference).

Now, when I connect display of the power of the lead part works fine but the screen does not illuminate. To the search, in the report of the system, the Thunderbolt Bus shows two Ports both with "no device connected". I have a Thunderbolt ethernet adapter and shows.

I tried all the usual troubleshooting steps: disconnected power for a few minutes, resetting the NVRAM, reset SMC. A ran Diagnostics from Apple on the MacBook - all very good. I don't know what I can do. The Thunderbolt connector is slightly warm to the touch, which I think is always the case.

Everyone you have other ideas please?

    Hey donnysp,

If I understand correctly, the external display Thunderbolt is not recognized by MacBook Pro.  Looks like you already have a troubleshooting. I recommend you to read this article, it may be able to help solve the problem.

Check the connections on your Mac and external screens:

    • If you use an Apple laptop computer, try to connect the AC adapter.
    • Make sure that the power cable from the external display is connected correctly and that your display is enabled.
    • If you are using a Mac Pro (end of 2013), make sure that your screens are plugged into the right ports.
    • If you use a hub of display, Cabinet or "KVM", try to connect the video cable from your screen directly to your Mac instead.
    • Unplug the video cable where it plugs into your Mac, then reconnect to reinsert the connection.
    • If you are using a video card, unplug the video adapter on your Mac, then reconnect to reinsert the connection.
    • If you use multiple video cards to connect your screen (the cards are "chained"), testing connection of the screen by using a single adapter if possible. Some video cards may not be linked together. For example, a mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter may not be connected to an adapter DVI to HDMI.
    • If your screen has more than one video connection, see if you are using another connection on the display works. If possible, check if you use a different view or a different adapter works.
    • Try using another cable that you know to be in working condition. Check with the manufacturer of the screen to make sure that you use the cable they recommend.

  • macOS absurd Sierra battery drain

So, here's the thing. I bought my MacBook Pro in 2013 and since then I've never done a factory reset, so I installed directly all new OS', same thing, I did the week last with Sierra. Downloaded, installed, and everything was fine.

A couple of days, I decided to make my first factory resets with Sierra already on my Mac. All right, utility, fade and that stuff was all smooth. The problem occurred when I finally started using my own Mac.

Now, it's always hot, unusually hot even when I am just browsing Safari or writing on the desk. Previously, my (El Capitan and Sierra before reset) battery life was 10 hours now, only 3 hours on average.

The point here is, there are a lot of people complain about deplete it the battery Sierra and overheating but I have found no solution, is there something I need to do to make it act normally (temperature and battery life), or should I just wait for an update by Apple?

Things I've done: Spotlight has finished indexing and nothing has changed, not to use the Photo, reset SMC application does not resolve, go to Safe Mode and back did not help.

Open Applications-> utilities-> activity monitor and search for one or several processes using a lot of CPU (click the CPU tab).

Often a forgotten extension or another utility that is incompatible with the Sierra will loop, causing the type of problem you describe; other times it is something like Safari interacting with a bad web page or using an outdated version of Flash (or, let's be honest, no matter what version of Flash.)

The first step is to find out who is the culprit.

  • iMac external drive does not

Two days ago, my iMac 2013 end ceased to recognize the external CD/DVD drive I have been connected to it for more than 12 months. Put just the blank disc in the drive resulted in a lot of rumbling and resonate but nothing appear on the screen. Tried a CD and DVD and there nothing either. Did a hard reset and it stopped recognizing the drive at all, so I assumed that the drive was defective.

Bought a new drive, connected to one of the USB ports and nothing; won't even turn on. Tried different ports and still nothing. Just to be on the safe side, tried other devices on ports and they are beautiful, it seems that the readers of CD/DVD is having a problem with.

I reset again, turned off and unplugged the power, and it made no difference.

You can choose to wait until your computer is open to the public

and diagnostic tests performed, if this issue does not affect

any software update or upgrade; because the device must be

Usually the SMC or system management controller, if reset in one

effectively, should also be a reset of power management,

If the process is not successful, there may be other problems in

Since then, is happening in different places guess that there cannot be a router issue.

Yes, probably, what with the MacBook Pro itself.

Try the following on your Mac in order, until (hopefully) solved:

    1. Create a new user account
      • System Preferences > accounts
      • Click on '+' to add a new account.
      • Disconnect, then reconnect, then with the new user account.
      • Try to connect to a Wi - Fi network with your Mac airport.
      • If this resolves the problem, there may be something wrong with your profile and require more troubleshooting.
      • If this does not resolve the problem, go ahead and log in to your account and go to the next step.
    2. Airport to delete the Keychain entries
      • Launch the application "Keychain Access", located in Applications/Utilities.
      • In the left side windows: Select login for keyrings and "Passwords" for the category.
      • Click on the 'Genre' filter at the top and search all "AirPort network password" entries... and remove them.
      • Close Keychain Access.
    3. Remove preferred networks
      • System Preferences > network > Wi - Fi > advanced > tab Wi - Fi
      • Remove all the entries in "Preferred networks".
      • Click OK.
    4. Add Network favorite (s)
      • System Preferences > network > Wi - Fi > advanced > tab Wi - Fi
      • Add preferred networks using the button «+»
      • Click OK.
      • Restart or log off and then, again.
        • If it works, then you're done.
        • If this is not the case, proceed to the next step.
    5. Move System Configuration files
      1. Quit all applications that are currently using Wi - Fi.
      2. Turn off the Wi - Fi from the Wi - Fi icon in the OS X menu bar.
      3. Open Finder > go > go to folder > / Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration /
      4. Locate and select the following files:
Note: The files are OS X specific version, not all of the following files are used in each version.
        • com Apple.Airport.Preferences.plist
        • com.Apple.Network.eapolclient.Configuration.plist
        • com Apple.WiFi.message - draw .plist
        • NetworkInterfaces.plist
        • Preferences.plist
      5. Move all of the corresponding files in the OS X Desktop. You can place them all in a backup folder. The 'missing' files will be rebuilt after the Mac is restarted.
      6. Restart the Mac.
      7. Re-activate Wi - Fi from the Wi - Fi icon in the OS X menu bar.
  • I can't get MacBook Pro to start what it is.

I have a MacBook in early 2011 Pro 15 ".  The other day, while he was playing in Mainstage my computer decided to restart but never got past the loading of 3/4 bar.  I have run all shortcuts start and seem to restrict the question down to the hard drive.  I bought a new ssd and then had to borrow a friends MacBook to connect with disk utility (my computer wasn't allowing me to any disk utility) to format the ssd drive and install OS X.  I installed the new ssd in my MacBook and I always get the same question.  I can't get into anything other than the single-user mode.  What is a motherboard problem or a firmware issue?  Someone at - it any other ideas?  RAM is tested ok, ssd tested ok, clean install of Mac OS X starts with another computer so that the work of.  Tested cable SATA, reset SMC and LANDAU, ok I can't access internet recovery mode (it loads, and then the screen goes black to white).  I'll try a firmware reset disk, I don't know how it will work but when I can't access anything whatsoever...

I guess that's an incorrect configuration of the installed SSD. Assuming that there is no mechanical problem with the installation of the SSD, here is how you should have put in place.

Clean Install of Mac OS X

    1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime, press Command + Option + R until a globe appears.
    2. The Utility Menu appears in 5 to 20 minutes. Be patient.
    3. Select disk utility, then click on the continue button.
    4. When loading disk utility, select the drive (generally, the entry Out-bumpy) in the list aside.
    5. Click the Partition tab in the main window of disk utility. A panel will fall.
    6. Set the GUID partition scheme.
    7. Define the type of Format Mac OS extended (journaled).
    8. Click on the apply button, then click the fact when it is active.
    9. Quit disk utility and re-enter the Utility Menu.
    10. Select reinstall OS X and click on the continue button.

This will not work if your computer is capable of a resumption of network. See the computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery to see if you can use this method. If this isn't the case, then your computer initially comes with a version of Snow Leopard on an installation disc. Can you use this disk to partition and format the SSD install Snow Leopard. 10.6.6 or later, is required to access the App Store, where you can download El Capitan for installation.

I have the problem new wifi no hardware installed. I had this problem before, on and outside. I installed the new wifi card, cable flat and was not the problem. The problem was software, I'd do the reset SMC, resetting the Pram, reset memory NVRam and that would fix it for a while. I EL captain and he ran for a while without having this problem, but he's back, wifi no hardware installed. I removed some files in the list of network preferences and restarted to create new files, but now I do not have wifi listed in the network section in the preferences system on ethernet, thunderbolt and bluetooth option. I have a wifi dongle would I use to get when I had this problem who worked as Yosemite, but does not work under El Captain but it works in bootcamp with windows 10.

My question, is there any suggestions any one has other than SMC, Pram, NVRam reset or delete files from network preferences (I already did several times) to get the captain El OS to recognize my wireless card?

I'd do the reset SMC, resetting the Pram, reset memory NVRam and that would fix it for a while.

In this case the problem is almost certain to be a hardware failure, and you have already tried a new Wi - Fi module.

Generally, the problem that is causing the fault is an interruption of the connection as a common microscopic welding that can be difficult, if not impossible to find visually.
