Satellite A660 - format 500 GB HDD to make it bootable clone

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 PSAW3C-047017 running Windows 7 Professional 64 - bit.

I bought a 500 GB Momentus XT in December so that I can clone (bootable clone, not recoverable image). I just bought and installed Norton Ghost 15, but he can't see the player, which is connected to the laptop via eSATA. Disk management says I need to initialize the disk. I can't find an explanation of what exactly the means of initialization. What is exactly?

Various discussions of the forum say contradictory things about the effect of the end of initialization (if it destroys the data):

http://superuser.com/questions/283930/will-initializing-disk-make-data-unrecoverable
http://www.SevenForums.com/hardware-devices/29199-hard-drive-initialization-question.html
http://answers.Yahoo.com/question/index?QID=20080214215647AAYFNGS

Since this is a new HARD drive, I think that I don't have to worry about that?

Choose the MBR (Master Boot Record) or GPT (GUID Partition Table)?

Finally, maybe it's a bit specific Seagate for another thread, but I'll put it out there in case anyone can sound. I read that the Momentus XT has some built-in intelligence to prevent degrade them performance with the limits of partition alignment issues when Advanced Format is used. He also announced an integrated intelligence keep more frequently accessed content in the part of the SDS of the HARD drive. Will one of these to be "spoiled" by the init or the wrong partition style? What formatting, is there anything to be careful?

You may need to add the SATA driver for the HARD disk.
The laptop supports the SATA controller and the SATA driver files are part of the Intel Storage Manager.

Can I make a BOOTABLE CLONE of my HD together on an ENCRYPTED online site? IF YES do you have a site suggestion please?

    Very probably not.

I suppose that if you're talking about maybe having a disc a connected network of Mac and then using something like Carbon Copy clone to clone your drive on another Mac, but I suspect that it's NOT what you're talking about.  And in this case, the first Mac must provide the encrypted disk, say through FileVault.

What I suggest you that do is install OS X on an external drive or thunbdrive USB or SD card (assuming that your Mac has a SD card slot).  It would be a clean install of Mac OS X without anything sensitive on this subject.  Install the software needed to access and decrypt your data online (not the password or encryption key, just what you need to restore your data).

When you choose an online storage service, choose the one where your data are encrypted before they leave your Mac.  If someone else has your encryption keys, they can always decrypt your data without you.

If you need to restore your Mac of your encrypted backup, you start the external device, clone the external drive to your Mac in order to have a base operating system (or use the external OS X to use the App Store to install some OS X version you have at your disposal), use the software that you have installed to access your encrypted data and then begin to copy things to your Mac.

Backup in general.  Use of a 3-2-1 approach.  Have 3 copies of your data (the original version is one of these copies).  Use 2 different backup utilities that a bug in one does not affect the other backup.  Have a backup offsite to protect against theft, fire and disasters natural.  Copies of backup more is good too.

Getting back to your desire, I wouldn't (and don't) worry about a backup bootable online.  I keep local copies bootable clone them and book backups network as only essential data.

  • Satellite A660: Can I use HDD recovery after the C formattg

My A660 comes with windows 7.
I intend to install Win 7 Pro.
I was wondering if I format the C drive leaving 2 partitions (restore) system I'll still be able to use miladi autimatic restoration? - or the start setting will get too erased after the format of C:.

According to me, the info partionds and start-up of recovery are all in the system folder and I will not format that?

    Thank you guys

    Hello

As I know, that you won't be able to use HARD drive recovery option after installing other Windows operating systems
HARD drive recovery would be only available with Toshiba preinstalled image.
The new facility would change the master boot record and boot model will be modified. I guess the recovery of HARD drive option is not available in the menu new.
So create a disk recovery first before you install any other OS!

  • Re: Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (DFT) does not detect the HDD on Satellite A660

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 PSAW3C-047017 with a HARD MK6465GSX Toshiba drive. After experience, some consecutive failures of start-up, I was told on the Toshiba forums to use Drive Fitness Test (DFT of Hitachi).

I burned the ISO to a CD and booted from it (I must press F12 for boot options and select the optical drive), which is to run successfully. However, it does not detect my drive HARD - the list is empty.

Is there something I need to do to make visit to DFT?

I cannot commend this third part software features, but I want to know if you still have these failures to start your portable computer satellite?

    What's the problem?

  • Satellite A660 HDD failure

    Hi all
I've had the laptop for someone to look at.
The laptop model is TOSHIBA SATELLITE A660, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
This is not my laptop, I can't tell if the person has been using some software dengerous like spyware or any other, but I suppose that it is very likely.

+ WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? +
There is a problem with the HARD disk, a message all the time, SMART 'failure predicted on hard drive '. PC is running, but slow, and not always to start Windows. Has more no guarantee on the computer, the store where it was purchased no longer exists. I don't have a recovery CD and Windows is stored in the recovery partition.
The owner of the PC complained of strange noises from PC for a while, but I didn't hear myself.

    + WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR? +
I searched the forums for an answer, but I have not found.
I tried to look at the HARD drive, it is stable, not loose and seems fixed correctly.
First thing I tried was the disk check, but it wasn't even to start. When I restarted the PC once I gave a chkdsk command, there was a black screen with info, it will start the process in 10,9,8... 1 sec, he stuck to 1 sec and never begun the process. After some time I left he thinks, PC off by itself (AC adapter / CC was pulged in all time).
I tried to find the computer, I brought to the factory settings, but it did not help. The problem is always present and laptop is terribly slow. BTW, I had to try twice, once there was an error: error F3-FFCC-0006, I discovered, that the error appears when the AC adapter / CC was missing, but it is pluged in all the time.
I brought the BIOS to its factory settings, which is probably not relevant.

    + WHAT I WANT TO KNOW? +
Is there a possible way to repair the HARD drive?
OK, I agree that I probably need to buy a new HARD drive, there is only one thing I would like to know. How can I get WIN7 installed without the CD? I know that I have the CD key and license, but how do I get the CD? I do purchuase CD from Microsoft? Purchuased of TOSHIBA recovery CD solve my problem?

    Thanks for any help.
I will appreciate it asap, cause this laptop is required by the owner of that an option to send the laptop to the service and wait weeks for some 'help' is not an option.

    > Is there a way to repair the HARD drive?

No, what you can do is to repair / fix the bad sectors on the HARD drive, but if there is a physical problem, it will not help

    > How can I get WIN7 installed without the CD? I know that I have the CD key and license, but how do I get the CD?

The key belongs to the image of Toshiba that I n t think that it will work to activate the system installed using MS Win 7 disc
However, you can download Windows 7 image of page Microsoft (google for it)
Then you can burn the image to disk using Nero or other burning application supporting iso burning and could use this disc to install Windows 7

Otherwise, you can order the Toshiba recover drive here:

    Hello

First of all, I must say that you can ignore these messages to update the driver. If you n t notice no problem you can always use the old drivers.

To save energy, you must use the Eco Mode on your laptop. As far as I know Satellite A660 has a key of Eco, if you press it, Eco Utility will start and save energy.

In addition the preinstalled Windows 7 Toshiba is already configured for better compatibility and good performance. You can install and do what you want, everything is configured properly. :)

  • Satellite A660 - 11 M - drive HARD recovery is not possible

    Hello.

I bought the satellite A660 - 11 M two months ago. A week before, he started to cause a problem that when turned on, boot HARD drive is not possible in the first place and boot priority option page is shown. Only after that I have reset a start command, it started.

To resolve this issue for good, I decided to format the HARD drive using the HDD recovery procedure. Unfortunately, I had to cancel this procedure after 2 minutes, and the start-up is not possible at all since then. He continues to display the message "Boot failure" etc. and staging to the BIOS screen. So, I can not access the recovery procedure even if I keep the F8 key. I am afraid that a recovery on the HARD drive partition can have been damaged due to the forced cancellation.

I have not created a DVD of my own laptop recovery, and the only option seems to buy one from Toshiba (https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx). Before you order a recovery disc, I would ask if my problem can be solved using the disc. Anyone who has experience with the recovery disc could advise me? Another question is to know if a standard warranty let me send to Toshiba ASP? Thank you for reading.

    Hello

    > Another question is to know if a standard warranty let me send to Toshiba ASP?
    Warranty only covers hardware issues.

Question you seems to be related to a software problem.
Therefore, I doubt that installation of the OS would be covered by the warranty.
You should order the recovery disk and must attempt to define the notebook back to factory settings.
Then you should check the features of the laptop.

    Good luck

    -reinstall all drivers
-Uninstalling the root USB controller and restart the computer
-Finally to format my laptop and clean reinstall.

-3 ports still does not work and I do not know how to solve them.

  • Satellite A660 - will not start initialize drive HARD failure

    Hello
first of all thank you for your time.

    Model: Satellite A660 (PSAW3A-07U00R)

The problem started yesterday, the computer has been going slowly as a closed application, so I held the off button until the pc is turned off. When I restarded the laptop, it went to a screen saying: start windows normally or repair Windows (recommended)

When started normally it hangs just a blank screen, repair Windows recommends a system restore to a previous point that did not work. As it crashes again. I tried pressing F8 and boot in safe mode, but even once it just hangs. Then, after having repeatedly tried safe mode and another system restore the computer then hangs when I press F8. After that, the computer passes in front of the Toshiba logo with F2 and F12 options screen (which still works) and then it rises the initialization has failed then shuts off and comes with start-up bootfailed failed with a few numbers and letters, then it goes to a small box entitled menu starting with 4 options. These are some
    Toshiba MK6465GSX HDD/SSD
    CD/DVD MAST * UJ141ES ABD - CMB
    FLOPPY DRIVE
    LAN

If I press ESC, it passes through the loop of bootfailed and ends at the same screen, if I press on enter "HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX" then he quickly returned to the screen and at the bottom it says [HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX] failed.

I do not understand why it has gotten worse over time. Can anyone think why it occurred and more importantly, how can I get my pc working again? Note: held 0 then start does nothing for me atm

    Best regards, Matthew

    Hello Matthew,.

To be honest, I agree with Akuma and it could be related to a dysfunction of HDD the error you described, but ensure 100% there s no software problem, you should try the Toshiba Recovery disk Windows installation. Something may be confused until the Windows installation and recovery of files on the HARD drive, so it cannot be started. Recovery disc will resolve this problem by formatting the HARD drive and restoring the settings box.

If it still doesn t it work s hardware malfunction but an authorized service provider can solve these problems under warranty for free. So just contact the guy and ask for help. ;)

If you have other questions or already solved the problem, please let us know!

  • Satellite A660 Factory Restore problems

I have a Satellite A660 Ref. PSAW3A-14V062 delivered pre-installed with Win 7 not provided, but a hidden partition with disk recovery files.

Decided to do a restore to factory from scratch but ends of disk errors. Removed the HD and connected to another computer.

Using Acronis Disk Director, I copied the hidden partition (HDDRECOVERY) to another drive and then formatted the drive and copied the partition hidden in it and reinstalled to the laptop.
Downloaded an ISO image and tried to install it from DVD but received the message that windows cannot be installed on the HARD disk that the drive is about to fail.

Bought new HARD drive and copied the partition hidden for her.
I then tried to install from the DVD, but kept getting errors about unable to find files, after ISO more several downloads and burn 5 different DVD the furthest I got was the screen where it is "files", this remains at 0% and nothing else.

I then tried a factory restore using the "hold 0 during startup", but when I took out the key pressed 0 when the Toshiba start screen showed that nothing happened.

There was a small Partition 'System' on the original HARD drive I have has not copied. I have a few questions.

    (1) the "System" partition did not the files needed to start the factory restore and if so is there anywhere I can download these files?

    (2) probably a topic for another thread, but no clue as to why I have so many problems with ISO files.

Cheers and sorry for the long-winded explanation.

The installation of any recovery is quite complicated. It is designed to avoid a kind of manipulation so original recovery image can be installed either using recovery DVDs or HARD disk recovery facility which must be created with Toshiba recovery disc creator tool.

To be honest, the whole story is complicated enough, but what confuses me, is
    > Decided to do a restore to factory from scratch but ends of disk errors
If I understand you right, you have created a drive recovery, right? What exactly happens?
You can use this drive with new HARD drive?

This method with files recovery to cope with the new HARD drive does not work. You will not be able to access and begin HARD recovery disk image installation.

If you have a new HDD only how to install the original Toshiba recovery image is to use the recovery DVD disc.

  • Re: Unable to update BIOS on Satellite A660

My laptop Toshiba Satellite A660 from the hard drive (psaw3a-07t00r) does not so I bought a new one (WD500BEVT) when I put in the laptop and try to install windows, it tells me
"This computer hardware cannot support the start on this disc, make sure that the drive controller is enabled in the computer's Bios menu"

In the bios, the only option I could find associated is the SATA controller Mode which when changed to compatibility, it will not boot the disk and just shows a white screen.
So I thought that I would update the bios, I borrowed a friend's hard drive and installed windows to him as well as all of the current drivers and programs of toshiba but when I try to update the BIOS, he said
    The program will be closed
There is an error occurred, please check the items below.
BIOS version is greater than 230.
    Battery capacity more than 20%.
    AC is attached

So I don't know what the problem is I have the attached power and the battery is fully charged.

    Hello

The history is somewhat strange. With friends, HARD drive, everything is OK, but with one is not new. Is it not suspicious somehow for you?
Is that the BIOS update, I think, won't help you any, because with the update of the BIOS, you may not receive certain additional options, so in the whole BIOS update is not so important.

I don t know that HDD was inside, but my opinion is that you should order the same or buy another HARD drive.
I ve checked specification for WD500BEVT and for me it's OK.
Have you tried to set the BIOS for the parameters by default until you ve started installing Windows?

  • Satellite A660 that partitions to copy by creating bootable clone?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Surf forum discussions, it seems that Toshiba has a unique way of partitioning the hard drive for a laptop. In disk management and Table of PowerQuest Partition editor, my 640 GB HARD drive has 4 partitions:

Partition 1: Windows RE, 1.46 GB
    * ' Active', probably contains boot info
    * Not large enough to contain the Windows 7 image
    * Image of Windows 7 probably real in the score 3 or 4

    Partition 2: 559,5 GB NTFS C drive

Partition 3: 22.37 GB hidden installed file systems

Partition 4: 12.83 installed hidden GB file systems

The closest that I could find for a description of partitions 1,3,4 is http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/619983-solved-mystery-partition-toshiba-notebook.html for a system of VISTA in 2007. Partition 1 is likely to start. Partitions 3 and 4 contain a kind of recovering files for other languages.

I'll ask Technical Support on the partitions, I don't expect them to know. Even if they do, it's on the phone, that leaves me no documentation.

    (1) I was wondering if anyone can confirm (or point to the online documentation that confirms) the suspicion that precedes the goals and content of the partitions?

    (2) in addition, how can I know which partition 3 and 4 contain files of recovery for the language of the Windows 7 installation, which is English?

    (3) Finally, I intend to clone all partitions except the one containing the recovery of unused language files. This will be my first crack at the cloning or manipulation of the partitions in any way (never done a picture). This plan is sane?

The intention is for the cloned HARD drive to be a fast replacement of full boot for the source HARD drive in its entirety. I use Norton Ghost. At this point, I'm not interested by creating usable images, although I could Explorer on the road.

    > Partition 1: Windows RE, 1.46 GB
This partition is automatically created by Windows 7 this was the case even with Vista. This partition contains files that help to repair the operating system.

    > Partition 3: 22.37 GB hidden installed file systems
    > Partition 4: 12.83 hidden GB installed file systems
This partitions could contains the Toshiba HDD image it is necessary to create an own recover disc and it provides HARD disk recovery options that help to recover the laptop without the use of recovery disks.

(> 2) Furthermore, how can I know which partition 3 and 4 contain files of recovery for the language of the Windows 7 installation, which is English?

The use of Toshiba disc creator recover the image of Toshiba in order to burn the recovery disk would not require to modify the image or files manually use the preinstalled software called Toshiba recover creator to create the recovery disk

(> 3) Finally, I intend to clone all partitions except the one containing the recovery of unused language files. This will be my first crack at the cloning or manipulation of the partitions in any way (never done a picture). This plan is sane?
Why you want to clone the recovery partitions? Create the first recovery disk this disc will fix the laptop always factory settings which means that the HARD disk should be formatted and would create a new time all partitions.

  • Satellite A660 - CPU Whine

    Hello

I recently bought a new Satellite A660. All right, except for two issues:
    1 - a keyboard problem: one key is extremely sensitive and is active on the slightest touch; I guess this isn't really a problem and can be solved by replacing the keyboard;
    2. the laptop makes a high-pitched noise, which tends to get very annoying when it's quiet in the room. I can say that it is not the fan, DVD/Bluray unit, HDD, or speakers. I noticed that he is present whenever the CPU is used only barely. As soon as I start a process-intensive task of CPU that the sound goes away just to come back as soon as the CPU is essentially inactive. The sound coming from somewhere under the keyboard around the center of the laptop.
The sound is not present while I'm in the BIOS, but it starts after I boot the system into Windows 7 or Linux. After a short survey on the internet, I discovered that this problem is called "CPU whine" and is related to the use of CPU and inactive States power.

So far I couldn't find any solution for this (second) issue, so I am here.
I remember having a similar problem with an older Satellite M40, but it has been resolved by a BIOS upgrade. There are chances that it will be resolved in the same way? Should I get the laptop to a service center?
Maybe someone from Toshiba can give me an answer too (?).

Not related to this: If the laptop is replaced, can keep you the replaced appliance HARD drive? I have a lot of things copied on this one and I hate having to go through this whole process again, with a new unit.

    Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards
    Claudiu.

    Hello Claudiu

I don't think that someone from Toshiba will give you answer here because this is the forum of users only.
In my opinion, you should contact Toshiba service nearest and ask for help. That's the big difference to discuss with other people of something that no one can see or hear. For this reason I can just say that maybe this will be addressed by the new BIOS but when no one can say with certainty.

In my opinion you should visit service, take your laptop with you and show exactly what is happening.
You have the new laptop with a valid warranty model then clarify this with the service as soon as possible.
