  Quite true, a MBP late 2011 will support up to 16 GB of RAM.  The best sources of RAM compatible Macs are OWC and Crucial.

  I have 16 GB of RAM installed in my 2011 Mbps, and both executed without flaws.

  Anyone who says that the 2011 MBP can not use more than 8 GB of RAM, does so by ignorance.

  I am a photographer and using my MacBook Pro retina 13 "mainly for image editing. For years, I use Adobe Lightroom and the CC/6 version now.   If you use a HARD drive then it is probably your problem. You have an older system, but upgraded to a solid drive (which allows a flash storage) can have a lot faster write speeds. What version of Mac OS X are you using?

  You can test it by connecting via USB, a boot disk.  If the Mac recognizes, the Mac, boots, then the internal drive or connection that is the problem.  Is it is not recognized, then it may very well be a logic card problem.

  I have a MacBook Air with active FileVault 2012. There is no significant difference in performance. Note, however, that there will be a performance impact until the original encryption is complete and that it doesn't have a way to stop it.
