Step to convert the current Dell PowerEdge 1800 server in Esxi 4

We have production server, which is Dell PowerEdge 1800 with Windows SBS 2003 with 3 hard drives in RAID. And then, we want to make this server as VMware Esxi 4 with the same Windows 2003 SBS server. We will replace the 3 new hard disks, but new readers are not the same as the old disks. What is the right next step? Because it comes to the production server, we cannot lose all data.

1. use VMWare vCenter Converter to convert the current Windows 2003 SBS to VMWare workstation

2. Replace with 3 new hard drives and install VMWare EsXi 4 CD

3 use VMWare vCenter Converter to load WMWare workstation image into the new server Esxi 4.

Please let me know if this is the correct order? Is there a risk? Thank you!

Welcome to the community - that sounds about the right order =

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1800, which has worked very well for 10 years, and I intend to replace it in the fall.  Last night, something happened and the motherboard got a little warm, and the system is dead. I found a replacing MB and was looking for a new power lift the thing and get some flexibility to order a new one and get it all moved on and running.  Dell has no idea about food, and I'm tired of doing tossed.
Is anyone know by chance the part # for this power supply?
I am trying to order it so it will be there tomorrow or the next day and I don't think even afer of power supply I found a MB. I started thinking about it after that I came home.

Although you need to do here is to check that CONNECT it BY SELECT, returns records you wait first, then the DELETION should work too.

  • DELL PowerEdge 1800 Raid SCSI

    Hello!

At the moment im dealing with a DELL PowerEgge 1800. It is used for BS that development issues - not a productive machine. Performance problems caused by SCSI for Dell Perc 4 controllers are well known, according to me. This is exactly my problem.  :|

Attached to the Perc 4 there are 4 pcs. 146 GB pluggable hard drives to hot home. I want to change the Perc to something with more performance - but without changing something to minimize costs.

I'm not able to find something suitable in the HCL for ESX4 (which is not to say it is not written there...). I need a single channel U320 raid controller with PCI - X or PCI-E interface. I Don t mind if it is not listed in the HCL (server is for test and dev only)-he comes to work.  And need a fairly cheap controller card.

At first I thougt on an Adaptec 29320-R. But I read that this type of controller only is not supported by ESX 4 more because of the 64-bit compatibility.

    So I see two ways:

1: find a suitable map (see above). Someone at - it ideas?

2: return o ESX 3.5 because they could be more controllers can be used in this scenario. The 29320-R can be used here?

THX in advance for your ideas...

    Martin

    In the compatibility section of material from the VMware site... ([http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=search&deviceCategory=io&productId=1&advancedORbasic=advanced&maxDisplayRows=50&key=&release] = 13 & datePosted =-1 & partnerId = 4] & [] ioTypeId = 1 & manufacturer [] = - 1 & vid = & did = & svid = & ssid = & rorre = 0)

Site of Adaptec 29320ALP card supports support RAID 0, 1, and 10 only.

The card 39320 is also listed in the HCL

With several controllers Adaptec SCSI RAID more listed, you have to choose between. I am assured to seek those who would compatible with ESX/ESXi4 u1, but as far I can see, at least compatibility version 3.5.

At this point, you will need to search with the features really, you need and a price you can get purchased cards.

  • Dell powerEdge t420, server windows 2008 R2, RAID5, partitioning problem

    Hello

    [Dell powerEdge t420, windows 2008 R2, RAID5 Server]

I have attached the picture of disk management.

    There are

1 extended partition in which it is

1 NTFS logical volume that completely fill the extended partition.

But there is a small green free space 0 MB.

    Is this normal?

Thanks for the info. I have install.

    I reinstalled the operating system

and in OS partitioning step installation

    There were:

a 1 Mb extended partition, then the logical partition.

I deleted all and create 2 primary partition (1 for the Os) and 1 for DATA.

    I solved it.

    But I don't know if

is the best performing primary or logical partition.

  • OK, I NEED someone TO HELP me INSTALL LESS ESXi 5.0 on my Dell PowerEdge 1950 Server! And of course, HE IS No. TUTORIAL on this SITE FOR ME HELP!

    As I said earlier:

OK, I am trying to install vSpere on my Dell PowerEdge 1950.

    Hardware specifications:

    4 GB FB-DIMM DDR2 memory

    x 2 processor Intel Xeon, 2 carrots, 3.00 GHz

There a RAID BIOS, so I had to create a Raid 0 virtual disk to install anything.

Drive hard WD 1 TB, it's the one I use for the VD.

When I choose which hard drive I use, I select the VD, I created, I select my keyboard language, then the configuration scan my material, then he asks me if if want to install, I pressed F11. Then, when it reached 5%, it throws an error: "partedUtil failed with the message: error: can not have a partition outside the disk!

He says that it cannot install it on a virtual drive? My server is not compatible?

Edit: There is another error that says: cannot read the partition table for device:

    /VMFS/devices/disks/NAA.60019b90bd8289001e62575a584731e0

What is going on!!! Why vmware cannot have tutorials on "How to install Esxi on a server with RAID BIOS"?

Check if the virtual HARD disk you packed is initialized. It seems that the installation is not written on this HARD drive. Back to the HARD Disk Manager (you probably PERC5 / I) to start the process I think is CTRL + R? find your virtual drive and launch. Take a look at the image as an attachment.

  • Dell Poweredge 1800 Raid 5 accidental removal of the HARD drive

I was trying to see the type of Raid HARD drive I wanted to upgrade the server. Out-of-disk HARD 3, 2 were disconnected. I turned off the server and then reconnected the HARD drive. The Raid is currently offline. It displays 00, 01 are missing and 03 as connected.

How can I get the raid, data are crucial and I know if I have INIT all data will be lost.

Then you will need to enter CTRL-R, highlight the PERC controller in the upper left corner of the VD MGMT screen, foreign and import.  Then see if your boots OS and your data is accessible.

  • Determine the number of the motherboard Dell PowerEdge T410

I work with a server remotely try to determine the number of points for our mother. It's a PowerEdge T410, nothing is coming through system information or serial number. In my view, that there is a certain different models available. Is there anything that can help me refine it? We have tried to add a second processor and discovered that the second take was damaged by the manufacturer.

    Antares-USA,

Normally, when you enter your number at support.Dell.com, you can click on the System Configuration and then see the original setup the server was in when he left. If that does not produce the information, then you must simply PRIVATE MESSAGE the serial number for me and I can let you know the motherboard installed.

Make sure of me private message with the information for your security.

    Let me know.

  • Initialization of the options in the system dell poweredge r610 with perc 6 / i raid controller

    Hello Sir,

I have a new question on dell power edge, actually I wanted to know this server works on a raid configuration only and for the purpose of the security of the data, we are able to use a flash drive to object is initialized (os ex: esxi, linux, windows) server as well as data will be SAS and OS record store will be separated into a flash drive?

Please clear my doubt... Thank you

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes we do, the real problem is I want to start my server with flash drive, I don't want to use the hard drive for OS, HARD drive for storage and the flash drive for OS.

  • Install a non-of a Dell Poweredge 2850 server operating system

    Hello everyone.

I was wondering how I could go about the installation of operating system, including Windows 7 and Windows XP on my server. I understand that they are not made for the server, but I would use Windows 7 instead of the server operating system. Windows XP is an option, but I'd rather not, if I have to

Stick the DVD in the drive and start to install.  Chances are that Windows 7, like server 2008R2 will NOT have the drivers for the controller RAID (PERC 4e/Di), so use the driver 2008R2 for the RAID controller (and any other device requiring disks after installation).

Controller RAID PERC 4e/Di to 2008R2 driver:
    http://ftp.Dell.com/SCSI-RAID/LSI-LOGIC_MULTI-DEVICE_A00_R227150.exe

Also keep in mind that PERC does NOT support non-RAID, so you MUST configure RAID before installing, or even with the right driver, no hard drive is visible.

    Potential problems:

Graphics - you should probably use the drivers of graphics/video 2008 x 64 for a decent resolution.  Keep in mind that server (such as 16 MB video memory) graphics will run NO Aero or high resolution/refresh.

DRAC - if you have a DRAC (Dell Remote Access Controller) card installed, you will not be able to install drivers to meet these devices in Device Manager.

Management system - software of management of Dell is NOT supported on the client OS.

    Other:

In the 2850 processors do NOT support the VT, then you would be very limited with virtualization options.

Sounds: there is no sound on a server.

Worst case, you can resell, install a server on it, operating system etc and put it in your living room to show off :)  The case of CaseLabs looks cool, but you'll have to do the same kind of work at home get compatible (and inter compatible) parts for it.

As I said, there is a good chance that everything will be installed and working fine... just to prepare for the unknown, when venturing off the beaten path.  If you have someone knowledgeable who can at least get you headed down a direction where there is a visibility for success, it would be useful... good luck!
