  You have already diagnosed yourself. This looks like an inverter of backlight for me also.

  Have you checked the Web from Toshiba website for updates to the BIOS?

  When there occure failure for the first time? Have you changed your, update or whatever installed when it is breaking?

  You could try to de - and reinstall the standard mouse driver in Device Manager (could be found in the Control Panel - System - Device Manager)

  Also you had written that the failure occurred when pluging in the AC adapter. So, you could also de - and reinstall the Toshiba Power Saver!

  My Tecra A8-S8514 (Core 2 Duo T7200 @ 2 GHz) has this problem: when I put the PowerSaver profile to 'Full Power' of the CPU sets his speed at 1.4 GHz.
  My company has purchased 2 of the A8 and testing has been replicated in the second laptop, which leads me to believe that there is a bug with the PowerSaver application instead of a faulty hardware.

  The Toshiba helpline ignore the fact that the 2 laptops have the same problem, insisted that I should do a system restore and it does not solve the problem so take it to a service center. There was no way 'experts' would admit the application could be evil and submit an application for the programmers so that they can test and engineer a fix.

  I don t think that the Toshiba Power saver is defective.
  To my knowledge, these tools are tested a lot of time and should work fine.

  In your case, I recommend to check settings in the Toshiba HWSetup.
  You'll find the CPU tab.

  There, you should check if the frequency of the processor dynamic Mode is set to high or dynamically switch able or always low. These settings may have an influence on the speed of the CPU.

  If the laptop works with battery only the WLan card tries to save the battery power.
  Go in the WLan card properties and select the Advanced tab (if possible)
  Disable the power saving mode.
