TM is not back up My external hard drive - or is it?

Hey all:

I have a MBP late 2011 under OS X 10.10.5.  I use an external hard drive with a partition called TM1 for time machine and I also have an external drive, called "Movie_Storage" which is basically just for iMovie infinity that I don't have the space on my drive internal.

I'm "seeding" a new database of time machine on a new drive and he completed the first backup of the internal drive without any problems.  I then plugged the disc "Movie_Storage" and confirmed that this disk is NOT in the list of exceptions in the TM preferences pane.  I then let him back up again.  There is a lot of data on that drive, so it took several hours to complete, but there, apparently without any problem.

Now that everything is done, open the drop down at the top and click on "enter Time Machine".  In the tree on the left, the "Movie_Storage" drive appears as it should.  To test things, I then go out TM, eject "Movie_Storage" and enter again TM.  I scrolling backwards in time to make sure that I am actually in a backup.  The "Movie_Storage" no longer appears in the tree.

So I open a Finder window and navigate in the TM database.  When I'm in a backup, indeed, there is a folder called "Movie_Storage", and its size corresponds to the size of the content of the "Movie_Storage" (about 800 GB) disc.  Yet, I can't navigate it in the interface of TM if the drive is not connected.  Why not?

Of course, if the original drive "Movie_Storage" dies, I will seek to restore my backup TM on a new drive.  If I can't see it in TM without the original disk is connected, it is a problem.  Advice?

Thank you!

The TM interface requires the thus mounted drive you can choose files to restore. You cannot select files from the TM drive itself in the interface of TM.

You can view the files manually in the finder to see, so you know they are there. You can mount the external hard drive and test it in disk utility to see if you can select restore from.

    Hello

    ·        Have you tried the same files and backup folder in one different location (another drive or media)?

    You can check if there are errors listed in Event Viewer related to backup is not made. To open Event Viewer, follow the link below.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/what-information-appears-in-event-logs-Event-Viewer

    You can also try to disable the security software and then try to run the backup utility and check if that helps.

    Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do not disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time that your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

  • Why my computer will not pick up my external hard drive?

    Why my computer will not pick up my external hard drive?
    using Windows 7 sp1

    Original title: usb

    Hello Fred,.

    Windows 7 sometimes has trouble recognizing external drives connected to the USB ports. There are a number of possible corrections for this.

    1. make sure you that the USB port in question works with another device, that you know works. For example, take a mouse that you know doesn't work and plug it into the USB port is connected. The mouse still works? If Yes, go to #2.

    2 do a reset power coercive.

    1. Unplug the power cord. Then (on a laptop) remove the battery.
    2. Unplug all USB devices.
    3. Leave it alone - don't connect or reconnect the devices for several minutes.
    4. After several minutes plug the power supply cord.
    5. Then install the battery.
    6. Turn on the computer and restart as normal without plug any USB device.
    7. Connect your devices one at a time and let them install as usual.

    The external hard drive works now? If not, go to #3.

    3. I have and others have used an application of part 3, the freeware Aomei Partition Wizard, download here: http://download.cnet.com/AOMEI-Partition-Assistant-Standard-Edition/3000-18512_4-75118871.html?tag=mncol;1 (only use the Direct download link). Once installed, you need only browse the external drive and select it, then click Properties. That's all; simply choose the drive is enough to get the drive recognized by Windows 7, no formatting required.

    I would like to know if one of these methods works for you. After back here with your results.

    Kind regards

  • How do I back up to external hard drive that is not an available drive

    I have a Vista and my computer alerts me needs to back up, but fails because the "D" drive is full.  I did a cleanup and still not enough space.   I plugged my external hard drive and tried to return to the top, but this isn't an option to store up to only D.   How can I clean the drive as well as to add an external hard drive as a backup option?

    Hello

    D: is normally your partition recovery and between 5-15GBs in size.

    If the above is correct for your case, read this:

    Your recovery Partition was photographed on your hard drive during the production of your computer by the manufacturer for all of these reasons.

    1. to reinstall Vista from in the case of a failure of the system, based on individuals or the keys at startup.

    F10 or Alt + F10 or F11 are a couple of different manufacturers use sequences.

    You will need to ask your manufacturer for proper sequence.

    2. to make the recovery disks on if your drive hard breaks down, so that you can then reinstall the operating system on a new hard drive.

    Also ask them how to make records.

    Your D: Recovery Drive is should not be used for backups, defragmented, etc..

    There are backups on an external hard drive.

    To resolve the problems that have arisen with the recovery D: Partition, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your computer to remove all that has been added to it.

    See you soon.

  • Laptop running Windows 7 does not start if the external hard drive is connected

    I know what is already on a thread, but here it is again (i.e. thread became uncontrollable anyway and did not offer me solutions). I have an ASUS K53S laptop computer Series and use it as a desktop PC. It sits on my desk and never move, I plugged my larger screen, a keyboard and mouse, printer and external hard drive that I keep all my information on i rarely save to local disk. These things represent more than ports USB to the laptop, I have a hub 4 ports on there also. It is just background information; I mean, the laptop is a must.

    Here's the problem: when I start, as I do every morning, I used to see ASUS inspire Innovation - first of all, persistent Perfection for about 1 second, then the laptop will just get on the job and complete its start-up in about a minute (including login). Which was very good until a few days ago when things started slows down a bit, then I rebooted as I always used to with my Windows XP tour. All closed but return is reactivated and it hung on the opening screen of ASUS and show no signs of getting further. I went outside and continued on another work that does not need a computer, thinking that if I ignored it it would be bit go further, but I came back hours later to find that it is always locked.
    Well after a little, I took the plug my external hard drive, and he continued to start where he left off, like nothing had happened.
    This settled this possibility, but before that, I had established a thing; I need to connect my external hard drive before starting, otherwise it wouldn't connect properly.
    When I managed to finally get both going at the same time (Yes, after some persistence, he recognized the drive but I still would like a solution to this when it exists), I looked at the hard drive and all my files are corrupted or something. photos are not valid, some files that I know to have files in appear them as empty and I can't make any sense at all. Is there someone out there who has had this problem before and fixed, and if so, how?
    My external hard drive is a Seagate 1 TB, if it helps.
    I really want an answer to this, I have data on that disc that I need and I'm not.

    If the problem affects only one PC it says its something specific to this PC.

    When I connect it to my usb port it records any with the computer. The green light so there is power to the hard drive. The usb ports recognized of other fine features (a modem and memory stick)

    I tried the external hard drive on a desktop pc and it works fine.

    I have downloaded all windows xp service pack updates and updated my bios. Don't know what to do now.

    Please help and thank you in advance!

    Hello

    Although sometimes, I know that the OS is not able to recognize the external USB device, because the device external USB (HDD) consumes more energy than the 500mA.
    The USB ports provide 500mA power and if the device needs more power so it s is not possible for the Windows operating system to recognize the external device.
    You have an external power supply for the USB HDD? You should use it.

    Hi @db69613,

    Welcome to the HP forums! It's a great way to engage, ask questions and find resolutions by working with specialists from the community of HP. I understand that you need assistance with your desktop computer HARD drive that is connected to your laptop via the USB port. I'll be happy to help you with this.

    I'm just surprised at the levels of technical knowledge and technical skills that your possession. Hats off to you for this. It was very clever of you! It has been a privilege to have shared this platform with you and work with you.

    First of all, programs of a different version or windows session will not work on another computer as it was installed on the computer of origin at this time. It is an installation and application software, to the difference of the data or information that is accessible by any computer when the hard drive is connected. It is because no software installation binds the application of this specific operating system installed on this specific to the time machine.

    If the computer does not and the hard drive is accessible, all the content (such as music, photos, videos, and other information are accessible), but the programs have been installed originally are not available and will not work on any other computer when it is connected to the outside.

    However, if the hard drive works fine, windows is correctly installed, then the same hard disk can be installed on another PC of office and some of the programs should work ideally.

    I hope this helps! Please let me know how it goes. I really hope that the issue is fixed without hassle.

  • Problem with 'open with' records not of programs on external hard drive

    Hi - I have several large programs installed on an external hard drive. Previously, there were no problems with the program and files associated with the other. My computer had to be rebuilt recently and all re-installed with the exception of those programs on the external hard drive. My files get recognized by windows - when I am asked to browse to find the program and I select this program from the ED - windows will not add to the 'open with' list of programs. I don't see what the problem is and a little lost. If anyone can help I'd be really grateful, as I have quite a few files that I have now correctly open questions.

    When you install a program, two things happen: the program get
    When you say let it go, and * pointers to many parameters and references
    It is set in the registry and elsewhere in \windows (there are
    an occasional exception, but usually only with a small single
    programs).

    Thus, when Windows has been reinstalled, all these many pointers, settings,.
    and references to it in the registry and elsewhere in \windows
    have been lost. Programs cannot operate without them.

    For this reason, separating \Windows and installed programs
    (especially on an external drive) is a bad thing to do.

  • E3000 displays "USB is not supported" error with external hard drive

    I have the E3000 router and recently bought a USB WD (Western Digital) 2 TB external hard drive.  I plug the HDD on the router, open the home page of the router (http://192.168.1.1/) then click on storage > disk and I get an error of "the USB is connected is not supported"-suggestions on how to solve this problem?

    Thanks for any help!

    I had the same problem with my WD hard drive today after setting up my E3000. Remove the protection 'security' or the password on the disk as well as level of what the duration of sleep obtained took care of this problem. My WD is now working with my E3000 seemlesly.

  • Windows could not complete the format (external hard drive)

    I use windows 7 64 bit and my external hard drive crashed and has converted his car to RAW format rather than NTFS

    I tried to solve the problem by changing the name of 'L' discs to other letters and retry the format without success

    I also tried to use the disk management format and changed to an optimal device

    And also I tried using diskpart.exe

    This has not just to reformat the drive, so I can use it I do not have the information about this because it's still all on my computer any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    Hello

    could a. you give us the exact error message and the error code, if any?
    b. what commands did you tried the diskpart utility?
    c. I recommend to do the full format rather than the quick and check.
    d. also try to format the drive on another computer and check.

    I recommend you to use the clean command to remove and format all partitions on the external hard drive and check. See the article below for more information.

  • Windows 7 Pro Backup can not see my USB external hard drive.

    This seems to be an old problem, maybe someone has a solution:

    I have a Toshiba 150 GB NTFS USB 2.0 external hard drive I used as backup when I had XP, but now I have W7 Pro 64-bit (SP1), and the backup program is unable to see the player.

    It shows in Explorer, it works very well, has write permission, but is not in the list of Backup Options.

    Player is 18 months old. W7 found and installed the USB driver for it.

    It is wired, I don't have a network.

    In addition, Windows cannot format the drive.

    I changed the drive letter of that W7, named F to Z, no go.  All I see in the backup is C and the DVD player.

    It has been suggested that I have uninstall all the drivers USB and reboot and let Windows reload them, but I have a keyboard and a mouse USB, so if I do that has no way to control the computer.

    How can I make the visible external drive for the backup program? Any help is appreciated.

    I use Ghost on my 8 month, Toshiba Satellite L755 and have never seen a conflict.  I also have it on 3 desktop computers.  For antivirus I use AVG free on 3 systems, Symantec SEP on that and Norton Security Suite on the laptop (which I get for free from Comcast).  The only thing related to security, I see in the menu start from Ghost 15 is a small window to give people access to Ghost.  He also built in the feature called Threatcon, which I've never had any message of.  Here's the info of the construction in the help.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    On Symantec ThreatCon
    ThreatCon is threat of Symantec early warning security system. When Symantec identifies various threats, the ThreatCon team adjusts the level of threat. This adjustment gives people and adequate warning systems to protect against attacks and data systems.
    When you activate the trigger of Symantec ThreatCon to a selected backup job, Norton Ghost detects changes in the threat level. Your computer must be connected to the Internet, at the time. If the ThreatCon level is reached or exceeded, the backup operation in which you have enabled Symantec ThreatCon is started automatically. You have then a recovery point to use to recover your data to your computer should become affected by the latest threat.
    Note:
    If your computer is not online, then it is not sensitive to online threats. But if you connect your computer to the Internet at any time, it becomes vulnerable. You don't have to enable or Disable Symantec ThreatCon when you go on or off line. Works if you're online, it doesn't matter if you're offline.
    For more information about Symantec ThreatCon, visit http://www.symantec.com.
