try to photograph a sunset through the tree branches, but the camera will not focus correctly

I have a SX50HS, I'm trying to take a zoom of the sunset through trees, but the camera will be only focus on the branches... trying to get the Sun in short

I agree with the manual focus to infinity. I think that you will have little problem get enough light in the camera for a fast shutter if you are shooting and counting of the Sun!

Something will have to be badly exposed, because the Sun is so bright, and the hidden tree side is not. If you meter the Sun get beautiful orange, the tree will be a dark figure. Adjust the exposure for the sky a little left or right of the Sun, not the sun itself for best results. I'm not used to the Powershot cameras, f/5 might work, but on a DSLR, you would probably like an opening narrower, like f/8 or f/11 or even higher.

This is probably the way to go rather than dosage for the tree and saw the sky blown completely out., but you can try both ways for fun.

Good luck!
