U2 5.5 ESXi on new R630s

New install.  Can I use the Dell supplied 5.5 U2 ISO or ISO from the VMware site?

Will be missed all the drivers?  I have no RAID, just 4 x 1GbE on board and 4 x 1GbE PCI.

Also, how the double SD card work?  I have two 16 GB SD cards.  He finds himself automatically or should I put it somewhere? r

Finally, should I install OMSA?  I have the iDRAC Ent.  Hoped iDRAC would finally all OMSA is so I don't have to install the software, which was buggy as [ADMIN NOTE: profanity removed by TOU] in my other 8 4.1 and 5.1 servers.

We recommend that you use our image, and it includes the NETWORK adapter drivers. The IDSDM is a Raid 1, so if you have two SD cards, you can activate the RAID mode and it will reflect them. It is located in the menu devices built into the BIOS. IDRAC8 monitoring is improved and allows you to control many things and may be enough depending on what you want to monitor.

  • ESXi Get new snapshot

    Hello

I have attached 2 photos. "current", this is how esxi works by default. When you get a new snapshot, your current location would be after the last snapshot. What I need is the photo 'desired '. One way is to get a new snapshot and return to the previous. But in doing so, the virtual machine will restart. Is there anyway I could get a snapshot and have a status of "desired"?

If you continue to use the same State of the virtual machine and not lose all changes, while the snapshot is mounted, the only way is to temporarily create a new snapshot, mount the previous snapshot and remove the temporary snapshot again after disassembling it.

  • Build lab ESXi for new user. low cost and power, a lot of questions

I've never touched of ESXi, but a customer is going to have it in place so I want to get familiar with it to some extent. I need a reality check of some of you who know what you're going before I start ordering components. I'm not trying to become an expert to ESXi, I just want to know my way around.

I would like to build a mini server that uses ESXi, and that hosts Windows 2008 Server to act as a domain controller for my small network. This is the only use for the server and ESXi, but other needs can happen, and I want to be able to test other virtual machines within ESXi.

I have read through a good number of blog posts on the creation of laboratories of the House, and those who have let me know to a certain extent. But still, like a newb, there are a lot of questions. ESXi is not a normal BONE, and I would like to get things right the first time.

Given that the box will be on 24/7, I would like to lower energy consumption. Performance is better, but I like to keep the use of the power down. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do without a video card. I'll go with a kind of small form factor case, and the motherboard will probably mini itx or micro atx.

Here are some of my ideas, if please correct me or suggest that you feel appropriate.

    1. As far as I know, ESXi and vSphere Client all I need VMware and are free for my use will be.
    2. I'll be able to install x 64 guests in ESXi, correct? (I think if ESXi is running inside vmware workstation, only x 32 guests work?).
    3. Is it true that a single physical NETWORK card is necessary for my simple needs (not really sure on this subject).
    4. I was going to get an i3, but am now wondering if I should opt for a faster chip. I almost always used Intel for my desktop, but would consider AMD if it aligns well (power, graphics, mobo that works well with ESXi). I3 is the less power-hungry, but it's not clear to me that one of the faster chips will pull down a lot more power in standby mode. This server will have a quiet life. If it becomes more than one domain controller, it's ok if the power use goes up. I want to just make sure that it is intended as a DC for a very small network, it uses power as little as possible.
    5. I would get a mobo that has a compatible network of ESXi on that card, but those who seem to be quite rare, or the less difficult to ID. I'm guessing that the integrated nic will be less power hungry? Suggetions mobo?
    6. I'll use a 2.5 hard drive "to save energy

Indeed. In this network interface cards, Intel 82574 L is of approximately $30, the street.

    To develop further-

    #1 Yes

#2 Yes, as long as the chipset have VT-x (Intel) or AMD - V (AMD).

#3 Yes, other network cards is for redundancy, load balancing, and the separation of traffic

#4-6 should be addressed with the links above.

  • Upgrading ESX 3.5.0 build 110268 ESXi 5.1 or newer

I need to upgrade our current VMware ESX 3.5 cluster for the ESXi 5.1. To summarize the migration, we will use all of the new materials for vsphere 5.1 5.1 ESXi and new iSCSI SAN.

Existing/current cluster environment (about 44 vms) is as follows:-vcenter (version 2.5) (1) and (3) dell servers to ESX 3.5 for a total of 4 servers, storage Fibre Channel EMC CX 300.  We went ahead and bought 4 new Dell servers and storage iSCSI, SAN Compellent Dell to replace the current environment.  The only difference is that the NEW strorage for cluster 5.1 will not fibre channel, but will rather iSCSI.

I read a few post regarding similar improvements which I have summarized, but I'm a little unsure of how to proceed in particular relative to the storage side, (cluster running FC and iSCSI for new cluster).

    1. install Vcenter 5 on of the new material/vcenter Server

    (A) disconnect all ESX 3.5 knots of vcenter 2.5 and plug the new Vsphere 5 and set up the cluster

    (B) connect all new ESXi 5.1 nodes to the new vsphere 5 for the new Vsphere 5 cluster will contain all of the new and the old 3.5/ESXi 5.1 ESX servers

-This is where I am confused.  My plan is to have the new cluster 5.1 vsphere manage guests to vmotion ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1, the old 3.5 ESX virtual machine in the new 5.1 ESXi.  Can I add new nodes 5.1 ESXi or ESX 3.5 to the new cluster 5.1 first, or that matter which node I add first?  Also, the new 5.1 ESXi hosts should have access to FC storage that the old ESX 3.5 has access to?  In other words, the new and old ESX/ESXi hosts would need to have visibility to the FC SAN for vmotion, right?  I do not know if I can add the ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1 to the new cluster if not all guests have access to the old CF storage?

    2. through ESXi 5 knots ESX 3.5 virtual machines using vmotion

    3. plan downtime for virtual machines and upgrade virtual hardware (use of snapshot before you upgrade upgrade goes bad snack)

4 use storage vmotion to move vm data warehouses to the new iSCSI SAN

Introduce the new iSCSI LUNS to the new cluster and make a storage vmotion to move storage vm of FC SAN to the iSCSI SAN.

  • upgrade to esxi 5.5 to 6

    Hello

I have a simple question to make upgade ESXi 5.5 to 6 . I need all licenses or it is connected with additional costs? Is it just enough in my profile page VMware do updates keys / license ?? I have:

    vCenter Server 5 Essentials

    vSphere Essentials Plus 5

And another question is can I install esxi as 'new installation' or I don't have the possibility to update the current version?

If you have an active support and subscription contract, you can upgrade your keys without charge, see how: VMware KB: how to upgrade license keys in my VMware

If you have vCenter Update Manager, you can use the Update Manager to upgrade your hosts to the latest version, but you need to upgrade your server vCenter Server and Manager to update to the latest version first. But, if you do not have that deployed, you can simply use the Setup program to upgrade interactive: upgrade to VMware ESXi 5.5 using the Interactive Installer - Support Insider - VMware Articles

  • Hypervisor upgrade ESXi ESXi 4 paid 5.1

We are currently managing the free version of ESXi 4.0, with 8 virtual machines running on it (pretty small machines).  Let's add a second server to our environment to run ESXi 5.1.  We will buy 5.1 ESXi licenses for both servers.  I am currently working on the best way to upgrade my server ESXi 4.0 5.1 when purchase us the license 5.1 and am looking for feedback.

Since the new server will be setup from scratch, is wise to configuration server and vCenter, move the virtual machine to off the area of ESXi 4.0 on the new 5.1 box, box 4.0 upgrade and then replace the virtual machine on the old 4.0 box?  Is this possible with simply being the version of the hypervisor 4.0 box?  I'm looking for in the little downtime as possible.

Any input or advice for the upgrade are greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

    Hi Busterbrown,

You have no downtime to perform the task. Please follow the procedure below.

    1 update/install vCenter 5.1

    2. install ESxi on new Server 5.1

    3. create a cluster in vCenter and add the server (4.0 and 5.1)

4 migrate virtual machines to new server

    5. turn the ESXi 4.0 in maintenance mode

    6. upgrade to ESXi 5.1

    7 balance virtual machines.

  • ESXi 4 Agents of HP management and customizations?

    Hello

I have 2 servers to test that where it is installed using the image of "VMware ESXi 3.5 Installable U4 with HP Management Agents and customizations.

In the State of health, I see my State config raid, controller status, etc...

I upgraded one of the ESXi4 servers with the "VMware ESXi 4.0 (upgrade ZIP)" using the vSphere Client Update

When open the Client vSphere and checking the status of health on the ESXi4 Server I see not the status of raid and disk status.  I can only see the status of the additional SAS controller used by the tapestreamer. (not the disks or Raid Controller where my disks are attached to).

Are there available for ESXi 4 new HP Management Agents?

See the attached files to see the difference between ESXi3 and ESXi4.

Usually ESXi installable w/management officers are slightly behind the release of GA, I would wait to see the new image distributed in the coming weeks. I suggest to contact HP and see if they have an ETA when the new image will be available.

  • I couldn't install ESXi on hard drive cool

    Hello

I want to install ESXi on new disk located under the list of compatible hardware.  I downloaded VMware-VMvisor-InstallerCD - 3.5.0_Update_3 - 123629.i386.iso and has written on CD.

But when I tried to install it after you set the CD as first boot device, it does not detect the CD and I couldn't install ESXi on this cool player.

    My questions are

    1. VMware-VMvisor-InstallerCD - 3.5.0_Update_3 - 123629.i386.iso is an automatic boot image?

    2. do I need to have another OS into the drive?

    3. How can I install this ESXi in this hard drive now?

Make sure that you are not any type of RAID software running in the BIOS.

Start the PC until you get to the error screen. Press Alt - F1. Type in the root under the connection. There is no password, just press enter/return. Type fdisk-l.

    Your hard drive is listed?

If yes then follow the instructions in this link

Script using vSphere CLI which is based on PERL and the question is what minumum Version is necessary and if there is a reason why the SOAP package is missing, because it looks like it is already partially installed on your system.

So go to vmware.com and install the vSphere CLI or vSphere Perl SDK for WINDOWS. You can install only one version of this package. After that, open a new shell window and try again.

Do not confuse on vSphere PowerCLI which is the Powershell Version of the vSphere API.

BTW. We use VUM or esxcli to install the MeM, but you must configure the vNetworking and iSCSI binding manually or by using a profile of the host.

I wonder if anyone can help me please?

    It is:

I assigned IP 10.1.1.100/24 for this new machine virtual but unable to reach the front door (. 1).

If I changed the door of 10.1.1.37 (I can only ping to a.37)

  • Should I just start over?  Conversion of 4.1 to 5.5

We are about to convert vsphere 4.1 to 5.5. We are very weak with only 3 hosts running about 20 comments of the virtual computer on a San.  Our VCenter VM is still on Win 2003 and I know that I should upgrade to W2K8.

Also. I just bought a new Dell server that is still in the box with no operating system.

My question is this. Rather than make should an upgrade from 4.1 to 5.5 and conversion vcenter, I just fill a new installation of VSphere 5.5 to the new server.   With a brand new installation of Vcenter as well? Then manually move existing servers into the new Vcenter configuration.

My thoughts are on the guests of a host in the new box and then wipe and reload each older host with 5.5

Is this his logic or I do this more difficult should it be?

    Thanks in advance.

    HMorris

    Your plan sounds good.

-Install the new brand with new DB vCenter: If you care about historical performance data, then you can connect to the new vCenter with old DB.

-Install the last 5.5 ESXi. on new box & same old ESXi storage attach themselves to this host

-Add the new ESXi host in new vCenter

-Add old ESXi to new vCenter.

-Configure the vMotion network and migrate all your virtual machines to new old host ESXi ESXi.

-Remove ESXi host to vCenter new and fresh install last ESXi 5.5

-Add once again back to new vCenter.

That your environment is small, you can go for embedded DB itself & you can go to Virtual appliance instead of the server vCenter vCenter windows as its easy to deploy.

  • Netspp old storage and issues of Cluster VMWARE

    Hello

I saw a former NETAPP FAS 2020 connected storage and confiigured with the cluster of 4.1

Customer is polanning to install new vcenter and ESXi 5 new hosts and want to migrate virtual machines to new Cluster and get rid of the old because of some problems of old hosts

I heard some mouth sharing old storage Netapp Storage can cause some strange problems and can cause some virtual machines get corrupted

is that correct? strange problems known?

Sharing storage should be the correct way to migrate virtual machines safely to the news of ESXi

It's exactly the way I use to migrate virtual machines to a cluster. I've done a couple of times (also with 3.5/4.x/5.0 storage Netapp and ESXi) and never had corrupted VMs. what VMFS is designed for.

Of course, I would not share a LUN to ESXi hosts between different vCenters as final configuration but for migration, it is reasonable.

    Just know that:

-Do not upgreade to VMFS5 until all ESXi4 hosts are disconnected.

-Storage i/o Control does not work across multiple vCenters.

-migrate does not mean "vMotion" but: power off > remove inventory > add to the inventory > voltage (of course...)

  • Error in the process of backup and migration

    Hello world

We buy a new server in our office. I want to migrate all virtual machines of old server ESXi to new ESXi server. I installed a Veeam Backup & Replication Free Edition to take backup of virtual machines or quick migrate between ESXi hosts. All the VMs were transferred successfully from the old server to new server, except 1 Server (TFS). I have an error in TFS server backup and transfer. When I want to transfer TFS or a backup of it, the error "the file < indeterminate finename > not found" occurs.

I turned off the VM TFS and started the backup procedure, but I got the same error. I tried to use another third called vmProtect Acronis backup tools. With this tool, I got the same error, but in the format clearly. The error is:

  • vSphere Essentials 4 key on ESXi3?

    Hi all

I wanted to contact VMWare sales on this subject, but when I choose this option I had to fill out a form with personal data and he wasn't any room to ask a question...

So, I'll try it here instead:

I am currently using VMWare ESXi 3 servers (free version).

I want to go buy VeeAm backup to go with that, but VeeAm support more free ESXi from VMWare changed their license conditions.

No backup program must support VMWare ESXi free edition longer.

So, there are 3 licenses of VMWare ESX or ESXi, VMWare vSphere Essentials and several other options.

It's price just below $ 1,000 is really affordable.

However, if I were to buy this package, I guess I'll get the license keys to enter ESXi.

Enter these keys in ESXi 3.5, I already use?

I really don't want to move these machines to 4.0: if it's not broken, don't fix it.

And another question: we buy our servers with pre-installed ESXi. New servers will have 4.0 installed. Can I use these Essentials license keys in these pre-installed versions of ESXi as well?

    Thanks for any help!

    Edit: both pis... Seen this

    > Note: the downgrade option is not available with ESXi 4 single server, vSphere 4 Essentials and Essentials of vSphere 4 (more). Only whole orders can be retired.
