  I downloaded photoshop cs6 after having paid for it an update to photoshop cs3. During installation, it asked for the serial number for cs4 or cs5 but not cs3.   Hey, it works - I am answering my own question!

  I used CleanMyMac to remove all traces of Adobe (LightRoom creative cloud and all applications and files, etc), then redownloaded and installed my purchase.

  It worked.
