Upgrading old software?

Recently I factory reset on my Mac air book. I had to re install the operating system on it, but when I opened the computer is a really outdated version of os x lion. I tried the upgrade and nothing has changed. Then I tried to download a new copy, but the App Store was too old to do it. Before I reset I was running the latest version of Yosemite. Can someone help me please update the software if it the latest version possible. I don't mind spending money, I realize that I messed up this one.

help is highly appreciated

Tthanks

I hope that you have a backup.

If you were on Yosemite, then in order to install Lion, you should erase the SSD and install Lion through the recovery of the Internet or a Lion Installer.

If you Yosemite on your MBA, OSX should be in your account in App store.  What keeps you from downloading Yosemite to replace the Lion?

The last OSX is El Capitan, which you should also be able to download and install on your MBA by replacing the current OSX.

Ciao.
