vMotion - another subnet, VLAN different

I'm under ESXi 4.1. I have two hosts. Currently, the management network of my hosts are on the 192.168.5.x subnet and this subnet exists in its own VIRTUAL LAN. My vMotion Setup is also included in this subnet and VLAN. What I want to do is move my vMotion for a different subnet configuration and VLAN.

How would I go to do this? Every time I change the IP address of the vSwitch vMotion, I lose connectivity him given that I should change the gateway by default as well. When I update the default gateway, the default gateway of the management gateway is updated as well. I have to have management and vMotion on the same subnet network?

As long as the vmkernel ports used for vmotion are on the same subenet there is no need to configure a gateway on that subnet as the traffic will never leave the subnet-

    I have a server of Mac Mini significantly improved, high-top of the range, operating behind a firewall, Zyxel USG.  As the host, the Mac Mini runs a server OS X 10.8 virtualized with VMware Fusion 5 (mainly as an e-mail server).  To avoid opening the ports directly to the host-MacMini and LAN1 to better customize security and settings area, I want to put the virtual machine on VLAN1.

    However, no package VLAN is pass to the virtual machine.  I tried two configurations:

    Home > VLAN1 in Network preferences > VMware Fusion set to network via VLAN1 bridge > comments "Ethernet" connects effectively to the VLAN1

    Home > (LAN1) Ethernet in Network preferences > set VMware Fusion to bridge network through LAN1 > comments > add VLAN1 to guest network preferences

    In both situations, * zero packets * make out of the VM/comments on VLAN1.

    My suspicion is that VMware Fusion 5 does not support packages VLAN marked.

    Advice/suggestions for how to get the virtual machine to join VLAN1 or really, just a different subnet?  Are there drivers tagging VLAN for VMware Fusion 5?

    The FIXED - partially, at least.

    It had to do with the package being truncated by VMware.  After I have configured VLAN1 on the host, and then in the hardware parameters, chose 'Jumbo Packet Size'.  Then I jumpered the VM via connection host VLAN1.  ALTO!  This works.

    However, trying to connect to the virtual machine as a direct customer of VLAN1 is always unsuccessful. The virtual machine which truncates the packets when it sends them between the host and the guest (and vice versa).  However, if tagging VLAN is the host to level (as I have it configured), then the virtual machine can communicate successfully on the VIRTUAL LAN.

  • vMotion between hosts on different subnets

    Is it possible to vMotion a virtual machine to a host on an IP network to another host, on a different IP network?

    Example:

    Data Center 1 - 10.1.1.1/24 with VM in the 10.1.2.0/24 ESX Server

    Same city, different site, binding fiber 10 GB between facilities 2ms latency

    Data Center 2 - 10.2.1.1/24 in the 10.2.2.0/24 with VM ESX Server

    Scenario:

    vMotion a computer virtual network 10.1.2.0/24 to the 10.2.2.0/24 network where virtual machine, on arrival on the ESX 2 data center server, now uses a IP address of 10.2.2.0/24.

    Any guidance towards a white paper or a guide would be greatly appreciated.

    vMotion is possible between hosts on different subnets, but unless your discussions presented to the virtual machines are on the same subnet, you will eventually drop the virtual machine on a VLAN different and IP addressing will fail.

    There are ways around this, you could script the change of IP address / present several IP addresses of the virtual machine / or reservations DHCP to use, but you will need to ensure DNS etc. records are updated.

    If you have some kind of load balancer, you could in theory balance workloads on 2 IPs hosted on the same VM, to solve the network ip address issues, although in the end, you'll want a VLAN tended to port VM coverage groups.

  • VMotion traffic isolation, vlan trunking

    We have 2 full length M910 blade servers sitting in the dell blade enclosure. Installed esxi 5.0 on the two blades and joined them to the cluster.

    Each server blade full length a 8 network cards.  2 ports double aboard the card NETWORK and 2-port Ethernet mezzanine card.  All are connected to the internal cisco switch 3130 installed on the module e/s A1, A2, B1 and B2. all the internal switches are stacked together by the network team. and there is a link to internal switch (uplink) and an external switch (ports) that are on the vlan 137

    All the ports that are connected to the esxi host are configured as trunk on the switches of internal physical cisco blade by the network team. in our total case 16 ports (8 cards x 2 servers) are fixed to the internal trunk on cisco switch and there is internal cisco switch uplink and our external switch (located on vlan 137)

    On esxi5.0, we set up a big flat switch affecting all physical network cards to Vswitch 0.

    To isolate the vmotion traffic, we have configured tag (150) vlan different for vmotion. but vmotion does not work. Unable to ping of vmotion ips with each other.  But if I change brand VLAN to 137. vmkping works on the other and work of vmotion.

    If I change brand VLAN other than 137 to any group of ports (for example, management or virtual machine), I'm losing connection to the corresponding port group.


    I think that missing configure something on the blade switches internal cisco (3130). Please advise on what needs to be configured. I know that kind of why trunking is required. If you could explain the exact purpose of why the necessary circuits for esx would be great.

    What is advised to configure a virtual switch, such as a large flat switch or multiple switches
    Assigning to each switch port group. recommended configuration to enable balancing the increased load of incoming and outgoing and fail over.  detailed explanation would be really useful for non admins networks

    I will try to describe one of the possible configurations.

    First some facts/support:

    • 2 ESXi hosts
    • 4 blade switches
    • 1 external switch
    • 8 NICs in each server Blade (2 NICs for each of the switches)
    • vmnic0 and vmnic4 are connected to two different switches
    • different subnets / VLAN for vMotion (100), management (101) and VM networks (102,...)
    • all VLANS represent them different IP subnets

    Virtual network configuration:

    • 2 vSwitches: 1 for management, 1 for VM networks and vMotion
    • vSwitch0 for management and vMotion (vmnic0 + vmnic4)
      --> Management ports (VLAN 101) Group: vmnic0 (active), vmnic4 (at rest)
      -> vMotion Port Group: (VLAN 100): vmnic4 (active), vmnic0 (at rest)
    • vSwitch1: VM networks (vmnic1.. 3 + vmnic5...) 7)
      -> VM 1 (VLAN 101) port group
      -> Port VM 2 (VLAN 102) group
      -> ...

    Blade switches:

    • all the VLANS configured in the virtual network are present
    • all ports of downlink to the ESXi hosts are configured to trunk mode, all the VLANS allowed
    • at least 2 uplinks and the external switch configured as a trunk, EtherChannel (LACP)
    • ports of rising and descending liaison (on each of the switches) are a group of track link state

    External switch:

    • all the VLANS configured in the virtual network are present
    • four channels of Port/EtherChannels (LACP), one to each switch blade

    You can configure the VLANS on switches separately or by VTP. In any case, all the VLANS should be present on the switches of. If you need to route traffic between some VLANs, you must either set up a router on your network, or - in the case where the switches support and are properly authorized - configure routing ip (Inter VLAN routing).

  • P2V on servers by omitting of VLAN different

    We've been migrating servers to our new VMware guests, and so far the P2V conversions are continuing smoothly.  Recenly tried to migrate servers and they were all fail.  The only difference I see is that they are in one VLAN different than others.

    The hosts have a vSwitch supporting VLAN multipul, and I was able to move a virtual server in this VLAN and work with it, so everything seems to be fine up to now.

    I am using vCenter Converter 5.0.1 build-875114.

    Don't know what I'm missing.

    Double please make sure that the source computer is able to resolve the DNS name of the host target ESXi (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1034292)

  • RV180W ping hostname between VLAN & different subnets

    I had a RV180w with 1.0.3.10 closes. According to the name of position, I'm not able to resolve host names between different VLANS which affected to different subnets, for example, allows said I have the following hosts:

    CASA:

    192.168.241.100/25 (wired - VLAN 1)

    Router: 192.168.241.1

    DNS: 192.168.241.1

    XBMC: 192.168.242.100/25 (Wi - FI - VLAN 2)

    Router: 192.168.242.1

    DNS: 192.168.242.1

    If I try to ping from two sources to one of the two destinations, the only one I get is a message 'impossible '.

    Authorized additional information routing between vlans & proxy DNS and if I try to look at the hostname under the 'nslookup' command, I could not resolve the host name, but if I do a "ping - a 192.168.241.100 ' it is said ' response from CASA (192.168.241.100) blah blah blah."

    So what I'm missing here?

    Hi Bruno, you can usually solve different subnet host name because the host does not know the subnet that treats it as a security measure.

    Disable the firewall feature on your computers and which must fix, otherwise you will probably have to change the lmhost files.

    The first thing that comes out of me, is that on the P 7024 30 VLAN IP address is in the same subnet as the IP addresses of 10 VLAN on the other switches. This creates a scenario on the Cisco and 8024 switches, where you cannot assign an IP address 192.168.10.x 30 VLAN. Because VLAN 30 does not have an IP address, it cannot be routed. The resulting transmission 7024 30 VLAN Tag traffic on port gi1/0/12 article. The CISCO_3750G receives traffic labeled for 30 VLAN, but then cannot do something with it.

    There are two approaches to solve this. You can assign a different subnet to the VLAN 30. Then on each switch assign an IP address to VLAN 30. Configure the switch for VIRTUAL LAN routing on your CISCO_3750G.

    Another option would be to not use 30 VLAN. Instead use 10 VLANS on the 7024 and VLAN 10 IP address assignment the 192.168.10.91.

    Once you have the IP gene outside model, then I do it with fine adjustment covering tree instances.  Here is a white paper with some useful practices and examples of UME use.

  • Linked clones and several subnets / VLAN

    Hey all,.

    In an environment with thousands of VMS, there at - it a better practical method to deal with the fact that some of the clones will be on different subnets or VLANS?

    For example, imagine 500 clients need to be on a separate network other clones.

    • Creation of another master VM model would cause more costs general administrative (maintenance of multiple masters)
    • Manually move the special 500 VMS to their own network would be ok, but it would be lost during a refresh/rebuild because the master is always on the main network.

    From what I've read so far, the best thing to do is a powershell script to change the special virtual machine VIRTUAL LAN after each refresh/redial.

    I wanted to ask you, if there was a best practice for this problem in large environments.

    I think that it is an area where the view really fails and should probably be a feature request for future versions.   I didn't know the established practice of the best, but I would probably lean towards the powershell script to make the changes as the easiest to maintain and operate.

  • PIXMA MX920 on another subnet not detected with installed software

    Hello, could someone install a Pixma MX920 network on a different subnet from the PC using the installation of Canon software?

    I have a user who has purchased a Canon Pixma MX920 and strive to set up the printer to work with a wired LAN connection. I have configured a static IP address for the printer and easily can ping and access the Web INTERN of the Pixma page.  We are a school and have a lot of features, so we have a separate VLAN for printers and other deivces.  For example, the printers IP address is 192.168.1.20 and the customer has 192.168.0.195 (it comes to 24 networks).  Canon, install the software from the CD (v1.1) through most of the process and then runs its program of network which fortunately says he found nothing and will not let me type in the IP address.  Also, I used the Pixma Web page to disable IPv6 because I could not understand how to do it from the console printer (the printer is so strong with each key that I didn't spend time to play with him).  For what it's worth, the printer is on firmware 2.020 as reported by the Web page as well.

    I tried to install with Windows, which allows me to type the IP address, but when Windows detects the printer, he could not say what kind of NIC using the printer was and I've not seen a way to add something to this list.  FYI, I have already installed the printer drivers, it is a separate step when Windows tries to determine how to communicate with the NETWORK card in the printer.  So far, only one computer is connected via USB and works very well for a computer.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if is to say that this printer is ONLY intended for home networks with a subnet and a few devices.

    Thank you for your response.  I agree that a printer with a DHCP assigned IP would be unusable.  I've already put the printer with a static IP address (which is why I mentioned 192.168.1.20).  We have 300 wired computers and about 500 wireless devices, as well as several in network printer, so we use different subnets (this is why I mentioned the 24 CIDR nomenclature, which means that we have our to 255.255.255.0 for the cable networks subnet mask).

    Anyway, I don't have Windows to install the printer as a device of Web Services, but it was very slow.  What I did to get the Canon intall software to work was to put the PC on the same network as the printer (if the pc went from DHCP to use 192.168.1.195) and the Canon software was perfectly happy to install correctly.  Once I changed the rear PC network, everything continued to work properly.

    So the right answer, in this case, is, "the installation of Canon software search subnet of the PC for printers, it does not have time to research all possible networks, which would be quite an intensive task.  The solution would be to allow the user to manually in an IP address when the detection of the printer fails, or tell customers not to buy from home printers for commercial use.

  • Possible for another user account different screen resolution?

    I would like to have the resolution of different screen for the account of another user on the same computer system.  I found that when I change the resolution, it applies to all accounts, so the customization doesn't really work in this sense.

    I know we can use Magnifier or enlarge the fonts or images on each screen by turning the mouse wheel while holding down the control key.  However, this is not good for someone just not good in computer but not disabled and it is extra work that the user has to do to be able to use the computer.

    You cannot change the resolution, but you can change the DPI. Go to the settings on the display page and increase or decrease the font size to the desired size. This is the workaround we use in our domain environment for users who want the largest size of the text.

    This is a per user setting.

    From page 29 of the install guide:

    vCenter Server Heartbeat supports sites with different subnets. In this scenario, the primary and secondary nodes in the vCenter Server Heartbeat pair require unique public IP addresses, unique VMware Channel IP addresses for every node in a different subnet and IP addresses of single management for each node in the subnets of the same public IP addresses. During installation, select the IP addresses different secondary use (recommended for the secondary DR) and specify the IP addresses public of both the secondary node and the head node.

    Why the vmdk files are in 2 different folders:

    Windows 2008r2 was misconfigured evil so anything by rebooting, it went to the system recovery. Was not able to recover the system.

    The system was rebuilt, and 2 D: and E: drives were attached ["use an existing virtual disk"] as of the existing vmdk disks to the new virtual machine.

    So drive C: [rebuilt VM] vmdk file is located in files vmdk D: & E new-vm-folder & readers are old-vm-folder.

    So "storage vMotion will pass the vmdk files [in 2 different folders on the same data store for the moment] in the same folder while that migrated to the different data store? I know that storage vMotion and change of name of the files/folders works well.

    If this is not the case, what would be the best practice to get is sorted?

    Welcome to the community - Yes it will be. The other option would be to turn off the cold and virtual machine migrate the virtual machine to the correct data store.
