• Western Digital USB external hard drive not found by Win XP.

  I have a new USB 2.0 TB WD My Book Essential that my system does not.  I took the first return to BB, thinking it was defective.  A new is similarly, and there is no indication that something is plugged into the USB port.  My system is: 2.8 G P4, 3G of ram, 850 GB on HD 3 internal, under XP SP3.  All 8 USB 2.0 ports work fine on everything else.  My system is well maintained with Virus and Spyware protection and registry cleaning and start cleaning.  Newspaper observer event system is without errors or warnings.  Device Manager reports no problem.

  I tried all the suggestions on bonofan1823 post.  Reinstalled all the drivers and other utilities allowing to scan the USB ports. The drive is formatted NTFS according to WD.  I searched ghosts, 315539 devices. I used the command SFC, 3107747. I ran Microsoft Fix It--I deleted UpperFilters and LowerFilters entries by 925196.

  The WD My Book has its own power supply, all my tensions.  The blue light on the WD drive and it's a small fan is running.  The drive does not appear in disk management or any where.  The icon does not appear on the far right of the taskbar and no audio sound is made when it is plugged into the USB port or powered.

  Someone at - it any other suggestions?  Does anyone else have this problem?

  Thanks for the info.  I've tried the drive on another computer running XP Pro. and it was recognized instantly.

  I found the driver ITS on the website of WD and installed on the computer.  No change, no recognition. WD has also provided a firmware update for the drive that I could not install because he could not find the drive.  I reinstalled the latest version of the BIOS (2005) for the ASUS motherboard.  I used an old record of 250G WD USB years and it still works.

  I bought a $10,00, 3 port USB 2.0 PCI card and plugged.  The WD My Book is instantly recognized and works perfectly. Problem solved.  The problem must be the motherboard ASUS or the BIOS on my P4 system.  I suspect that WD drive information was never getting to Windows XP.

  I'm trying to clean up my hard drive.  I tried to move or copy this file to the c: drive to another storage device.  These are the errors I get:

  1. are you sure you want to move this file without its properties?   The MonFichier.avi file has properties that cannot be copied to the new location.

  2. If I click on go ahead anyway, so he says finally 'cannot read the source file or disk.

  This is a video file.  A .avi file.   When you look under explore, there is nothing about it.   When you look physically the disc, you can see he did burn something.

  I recently bought a computer Dell 4700 to a friend with Windows XP installed. I've updated the memory to 2 GB and now seeks to install a WD10EARS 1 TB harddrive.   I want to use a Western Digital elements external hard drive WDBAAU0010HBK, but my laptop does not recognize it as a drive in windows Explorer. It gives notice that the hardware is installed and ready to use, but I'm not. In printers, and other devices, it displays an icon of the hard disk, but I only see the properties of the disc and not the files that are on it. I searched the internet for drivers for this drive, but WD elements has no pilot at all to its Web site, it says that the drivers must be installed automatically by Windows.   I bought this new Western Digital Green 5 to drive as a device of storage, but somehow, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on both my Dell Optiplex 990 (with Bios A19) and Dell Studio XPS 8100 (with Bios A05) can't see the ability beyond 561 GB (instead of 5 TB). I tried to just put it in the USB port, docking station and internally via ATA cable connection, but there is no change.

  On my Dell Optiplex 990 I even tried to change the main drive of 1 G (it's a laboratory machine in order to clean and reinstall OS) use of AHCI in the options of SATA drive in the Bios that I read, that it may be able to see the full capacity. Yet the problems I'm running into now seem to be

  1 BIOS can't even see the 5 TB drive in the Dell Optiplex 990.

  2 Windows cannot install once even in the main drive of 1 GB that I have spend fast storage by default to use AHCI.

  Please please advise on how I can use this 5 TB internal SATA drive or external drive USB in Windows 7. Thank you.

  First of all, make sure that it is not the hardware on your computer:

  1.) try all USB ports on the machine in question with the external hard drive

  2.) try other USB devices on the machine as well. You get the same result?

  The limitation of SATA is more like a heading of speed that allows the bus. (6 Gb/s) SATAIII allows real world speeds of up to 600 MB/s while SATAII (3 Gbps) allows speeds of up to Bot 300 Mbps connections. allowing speeds of over the current maximum capacity of any mechanical hard drive. Best performing discs can go up to 200 MB/s, so it wouldn't really matter if you use SATAII or SATAIII. You should be fine using either for the WD Black and you shouldn't see any difference in transfer speeds.

  So, I bought one of the new 6-disc TB WD Black (WD6001FZWX).

  When I install it in one of the bays in the car on the lap of my MacPro (2012 model), see disk utility but it won't boot.  Disk utility tells me that the "operation failed."

  Western Digital said that this player should work in my machine.

  Anyone had this experience?

  The depth of the holes in the disc are shorter because there is more things inside the car. At normal length screws may cause incomplete engagement of the contacts on the disk with the contacts of the logic board.

  Test the Hard drive on another computer, if it works, try to save the data and then format the hard disk.

  Try to do a Chkdsk Scan. The scan will look bad system files and will attempt to fix them, if possible.

  (a) click the Start button.
  (b) type cmd in search results.
  (c) click the cmd file and select "Run as Administrator".
  (d) in the CMD window, type chkdsk /f /r and press the Enter key.

  Note: Chkdsk /f /r enables chkdsk check the volume for errors bad sectors on the physical disk and file system. Chkdsk /f /r schedules itself to run at the next system reboot, by adding an entry in the BootExecute value.

  An old XP machine should recognize the drive, it doesn't require specific drivers. Be sure that you're using a good cable. Early symptom of a defective cable include inrmitent detenction of the reader. Or the hard drive is faulty, try to open the case and look for loose connections.

  The hard drive worked well until KB2398632 & KB2347290 updates have been downloaded and installed on 16/09/10.  Hard drive works fine on my Vista machine at work.

  Hello, I have a WD EHD and when I back up my files, I have run into some problems. The copy files dialog box doesn't move (the transfer rate and transferrerd files), I copy .avi, .mp4 movies in the root of the EHD. Sometimes the file transfer goes smoothly (even for large files like 10 GB-towards the top), but sometimes the transfer just freezes and the flashing light signal of the EHD WD just stops flashing. My DHM has also a downward transfer rate (starts for about 50 Kbps or more then deteriorates overtime Kbits/s 5 and lower). Although he manages somehow complete certain transfers of file (.mp3, .jpg and other small files). Note files that executables and other file prone malware as (installers, game and application installers are compressed to the .7z format)

  I tried a few solutions:

  1.) formatting of JEP

  2.) remove the partition in disk management and making it again a partition

  3.) to uninstall, reinstall the driver in Device Manager

  4.) tried on other PC and USB ports

  -I don't have a shorter cable to test if this is the problem and I do not hear the crackling sounds or have autumn EHD or pressed (no physical damage). The first time I have this problem was when one of my friends got my infected DHM and I format. Since then, the problem was just if I formatted JEP countless times and he well cleaned.
