  This isn't really a problem of Microsoft.  Java is Sun Microsystems.  You must have installed on your PC Java runtime environment.  You can disable Java updates in the Panel with the Java applet.  You should not see a daily update, but the updates to Java to get out with some regularity.  In general, Sun Releases Java update when the vulnerabiliites discovered oi the JRE.   How do you create the new layer? Looks like you have a selection and use ctrl/cmd-J. If you have a choice and it is empty, you will get this error.

  It is probably because the software is too old to use install on your new machine.  Look at the files on the drive and see if there is you can try to use to start the installation.

  EDIT: actually I think you could use sGray, who has the accurate sRGB transfer function - which is not strictly a pure gamma. But it wouldn't be right with for example Adobe RGB.
