• ASR PowerEdge R610 power defined at last but autostart

  Last week we had a power failure regular and a PowerEdge R610 Rev II BIOS 6.4.0 server has been stopped since in Windows 2008 R2 cleanly.

  So I bought my r610 as a system of bairbones so it is come with a controller raid or processors/readers. I got everything I need, except for substantive cable basket. Some came with my perc 6 / i, but the cables are for another similar server (they aren't the right length). Only cables that I found are $ 100 that I find shocking. Is there somewhere else I should look at / is there a certain type of cable for this server and to a certain length? Thank you!

  The cable that you would need for the Perc 6 / I'd be part # RF5PF for SAS 0 and room FTTNX for SAS 1 side. Let me know if it helps.

• ESXi underperformance of the r.620 vs R610

  All,

  I currently run a server R610 (X 5550 procs) and a unit r.620 newly acquired (e5-2650) unit in a vSphere cluster 5. ESXi running the latest version and the latest patches. Dell servers up-to-date with respect to the firmware of all components. The unit uses internal 15 k SAS R610 leads to host the ESXi hypervisor, while the r.620 uses 2 GB SD cards in mirror for the ESXi hypervisor.

  When I migrated some workloads on the new cluster member (r.620), I've seen some of our process execution times increase dramatically. The process performed on a MS SQL 2008 r2 server. When I migrated the VM on the initial cluster member (r610), execution time is back to the normal time.

  I went then to face a series of landmarks a test virtual machine that has been migrated back and forth between each Member of the cluster and seen repeatable results that showed that the r.620 was SLOWER than the R610 in terms of CPU and memory benchmarks (using Passmark v7.0). Cluster using the EVC Nahalem mode. I have also conducted tests by removing the VCA mode and was able to get similar results with the R610 being the fastest performer.

  I checked all the cores and hyperthreading is enabled. A glance at the guide of best practices for ESXi 5.0 gave anything different in my setup...

  Has anyone seen or heard talk about these issues with the r.620 unit, or E5-2650 processors?

  We had the same problem with our new r.620 (2650v2-E5). The performance was well below our old R710 (X 5550).

• R610 iDRAC. Integrated?

  I assigned a static IP configuration to several R610 via CTRL-E.  None of these machines have the installed optional iDRAC business card.

  For love or money, I cannot ping these machines, and I've tried everything.

  However, my question is this.  IDRAC Express is integrated into the R610?  I think it is, but for the moment (multiple machines) it seems that it does not work.  We plan to buy the company card shortly, but it would be good to at least use the Express feature until then.

  The R610 come with the iDRAC6 express. You have connected NIC1? It's the NETWORK card used in shared mode. The upgrade of the company supports the dedicated NETWORK adapter port.

  Anyone know how to upgrade R610 so that I can install 2012 from the BIOS?

  I tried as 'other' to F10 and it failed with pilot errors. I tried to update the firmware with the management of the ISO and the same thing happened.

  The R610 takes in 2012. You tried to start directly on the support of 2012? Looks like you were trying to use a Dell OS installation disc.

  What happens when you start Media?

• Very unstable with ESXi 5.5u2 stock - custom iso R610 would help?

  Decided to upgrade our u2 ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 on our R610:s to get the new hotness and made it the same way I have installed along - just caught the last ISO from Vmware. It worked very well with 4.1 and 5.1; systems have been solid as a rock for years.

  The probable cause is due to the version of VMware. The Dell custom ESXi version uses specific drivers for Dell servers, where the VMware version does not. It is therefore much more likely that the version of Dell will run more smooth and more stable, the drivers being designed. You can find version 5.5 U2 here.

  Yes, you can add an another MD3200 to your R610 server & get both to work.  As you run lack of space, you can also simply add a MD1200 if just needing space as the MD1200 is cheaper than a MD3200.  The MD1200 will connect via your MD3200 sas & can provide you with the additional disk space if that's what you're looking for.
