It is used to get/qualify for technical support (limited though it may be) of Microsoft; It is of no use during the installation process.
  25 character product * key * is used to 'prove' ownership of a license is necessary to perform the installation and is either stored on the DVD packaging on a sticker that says "Don't lose that number", or on a certificate of authenticity (CoA) label
  for an OEM computer.

Why not take my money and sell me a product key instead of let me in trouble?

  You should not need to buy anything except the recovery disc for your machine (if the built-in recovery partition does not work), unless you really need Win 7 for some reason any.

  That being said - the COA sticker on your machine is readable? If Yes, then you should have no problem with a Windows 7 upgrade version - but you will need to either use activation by phone, or installation methods described here...

When I reinstalled my computer with a new hard drive, I installed W7 and activated the option "Automatically record online" (or something like that, I'm not sure of the exact wording). It worked fine for awhile, but now, my office has turned black and it is said in the lower right corner that my copy is illegal. It is certainly not illegal, I've paid enough money for it and I bought directly from Microsolft site! I was also very careful when I typed long serial number.
