Windows Update froze my computer

My Windows XP pro service pack 3 Auto turned into a brick.  (IE8)  I finally used in June 2013, and it worked very well.  On October 12, 2013 I turned it on and it does nothing.  The problem was caused by something that happened when the aircraft attempted to do the automatic update of Windows.  I managed to open the Task Manager and saw the CPU pegged at 100%.  The culprit was one of the svchost file.  So then I used the utility windows Explorer process to identify and disable the problem, which was windows update file.  With the windows update file stopped, the machine works normally.  I tried to make the windows manually update and had no success.  The cpu went to 100% and the machine froze.  I left it on all night, looking for updates and the morning revealed that he had tried to install an update, but the installation failed.  I'm guessing that some update issued between June and October 12 is the cause.  Can anyone give me some ideas on how to correct the problem, other than leaving the updates turned off.

Hallelujah! I have my computer back.  Here's what I had to do.

1. I did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro (not a repair, but I formatted the hard drive first).
2 installed service pack 2 on a drive that I had, but it is available on the web, if you're looking for.
3 installed the service pack 3 on the web (do a search found).
4 tried to do the Windows updates, but could not. Kept getting error 0x8024D001.  So I did a search on this error message and found that I needed to install an update from Windows Update version. I found this one installed it.  Here's where I got it from.

5. the new program Windows Update worked and I was off to the races. Must have been at least 200 updates. Had to reboot and run Windows update several times to get all the. But in the end, I have the machine is working back again.
Hope this helps some of you people who are tearing your hair because the Windows updates turned your computer into a brick.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium x 64: activation of the service Windows Update crashes my computer after upgrade RAM

A few days ago I had two sticks of 2 GB GSkill RAM by mail. Here's the same brand, model and size as the pair currently installed (obviously). (Sticks alternate according to the specifications of the card from my mother)

After you have installed the new RAM and the computer starts up, it freezes within about 30 seconds of connection. Before installing the new sticks, I had no problem whatsoever.

My first thought is that I sit the RAM properly, then I go and reinstall it. I start, and the same thing happens.

So obviously this RAM must be bad, right? When I take out news, not gel. Ah, but when I remove the OLD stuff and use new instead, I ALSO no gel. So maybe it is not the RAM.

Then I reboot in safe mode. No gel. Interesting. I opened the window 'System' and it says "memory (RAM) installed: 4.00 GB ', which is correct." I opened CPU - Z, and it reports also 4 GB of memory. I run a few hours and have no problems whatsoever. So I say to myself, there must be either a Windows service or a 3rd party service is causing the issue and not the new RAM.

I disable all services of 3rd parties and restart in normal mode. It freezes. OK, so maybe (though unlikely) I have a virus any (I say probably not because I have to) run the module additional firefox NoScript, and set to block all flash, javascript, xss, iframes, etc. - in other words, only allow to my whitelist and B) I have Windows Firewall and running McAffee and updated.). But I decided to first try Windows services for the hell of it.

So I enable only the services that start in safe mode as my reference, disabling the rest via services.msc. I start normally and not gel. Great, then maybe it is a Windows service. I start which allows one service after another without any problem. I get to the bottom of the list and select the Windows Update service. Within literally 10 seconds my computer crashes. Large.

As a validation test, I put all services back to the base line of safe mode and only allow Windows Update. I start normally, and again once it freezes.

Another test of validation, I start with all normal, but disable Windows Update. Do not freeze. I'm going to start Windows Update. Yet once, it freezes for about 10 seconds. So clearly something is in place.

As a third and final sanity check, I remove the new RAM and run a Windows Update. He finds a few optional updates, but not critical. My system is up2date.

My only attempt to solve this problem so far was to backup all Windows Update DLLs (C:\windows\system32\wu*.dll, although I don't know if these are good) and do a scan sfc to replace them with copies of 'good '. It did not work.

    So my question is:

Why cares Windows Update that I have 4 GB of memory installed?

    Thank you

    Jon

    To answer my previous posts:

I think the USB storage is a separate issue. And.

I think I * may * have solved the problem of origin with one or more of the following (don't know who):

    • Updated the software of the chipset of the card from my mother.
    • Updated HD Windows audio drivers to the recommended ASUS (Realtek) HD audio drivers
    • Updated since Windows installed NVIDIA display drivers for version NVIDIA WHQL.
    • Increased my tRFC (refresh time of line) to 70 52 clocks clocks. Set my GSKILL DRAM voltage recommended by 2.1V. Off the SPD DRAM configuration (I read that ASUS is not entirely based on the SPD and can affect things on its own).

I had WU for 20 minutes from writing this post without a freeze, so we'll see. (Previously, it would freeze within 10 seconds of turning on WU)

  • Windows Update put my computer in "out of area" condition

I have a brand new computer.  Dell Inspiron 1750 with Windows 7 Home Premium.

After that I got a few weeks Windows Update popped up window.  He said I had 19 critical updates and I wanted to install.  I opted for the 'yes '.

The program is run and then it says the computer needed to restart to complete the installation and I want to restart my computer now.  I opted for the 'yes '.

Restart the computer and to my horror, everything I had done to the appearance of my top Office was gone!  He looked exactly as it did when I put on the computer.  My picture has disappeared, the pier was in its original position, all of the icons for the programs were gone from the dock and the taskbar!

I did not go further... I went immediately to the restoration of the system, and thankfully it restored successfully!

But now I'm afraid to always install updates.

I contacted the support of Windows, but they said I would have to pay for more information and then they would not tell me how to pay support!

I contacted Dell, but I talked to a technician for more than 40 minutes and it took 35 of them just for him to understand what the problem was!  It must have been in India.

I contacted Staples where I bought the computer and immediately, they knew that the problem was something that Microsoft would have to answer.  So it took back me to alternate.  Accomplished nothing.

Microsoft sent me here.  I pray so that someone knows what's going on and can help me because I was in tears and want to kill the support of Windows!

What application or antivirus security suite is installed and your current subscription?  What anti-spyware (other than Defender) applications?  What third-party firewall (if applicable)?

  • Dell Optiplex 3020 - the black screen after dell logo (happened after windows updates froze at halfway and systems were restarted)

We had windows updates run on all our systems of windows 7 in our medical center.  13 or so of our 3020 s Optiplex froze for eight hours about in a State of "install updates 1 of 24".  I have all them turned off and restarted units.  Once units have been restarted, they gave the Security windows startup or start-up option normally.  Those who had selected the option to 'start normally' would display the logo dell at startup, then click on a completely black screen (all devices still in market and monitors recording an active signal even if no picture).   Those started in safe mode w/o networking, loaded in safe mode.  I rebooted the machine in safe mode, and they all started out in windows without problem.

For systems that go completely black after the dell logo.  I am able to F2 in the BIOS, I can run diagnostics from BIOS and I can't F12 in boot options, but I cannot F8 or SHIFT + F8 mode without failure or fact start in safe mode, please come under early start options.

Anyone happen to know a way to launch a system of 3020 optiplex in safe mode without the use of F8, SHIFT + F8, go through msconfig or remote access to the registry (because I can not remote in the system on the network)?

Maybe I can put the hard drive in a dock and change the registry in this way?  But can I change the potentiometer to force secure boot? or is it not possible to make a bcdedit to it as an external drive, install it in his camera and force it to safe boot the next time, he is running?

Any ideas or suggestions would be very appreciated.

  • How can I stop Windows Update restart my computer in Windows 7 Home Premium?

While I don't mind Windows Update automatically updates from my PC, view it force a reboot when I am connected causes a problem.  I currently have WU configured to perform updates to 03:00, and when it's over, if to do a reboot, I'm not here to tell him to wait.  I'd rather leave time settings as they are and simply disable the auto restart, opting instead for WU to let me know that he needs to restart the PC.  I found ways to do this on XP and Vista, including registry changes and changes to group policy.  However, the registry is obviously a little different, so the keys do not exist compared to what I found, and since I am running Home Premium I have no gpedit.

Where in the registry can I make a change so I do not data lost when WU resets my computer at night?

Another way to do it without hacking the registry, which can be scary for some users), is to follow the instructions on the following Web site:

    http://weblogs.ASP.NET/jgalloway/archive/2006/02/11/438009.aspx

I stuck in the main rooms, in the cases where the link is dead (but not nice photo well):

    1. Click Start-> Run (or Vista and 7 just press the windows ORB)
    2. Type: gpedit.msc
    3. Expand Local computer policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update
    4. Double-click on "to demand no auto restart for automatic updates installations".
    5. Select 'Active', then OK. Close the group policy configuration program.

    This should stop it autorestarting.

  • Put Vista automatic update froze my computer

During a systematic automatic upgrade, my computer froze on step 11 of 12.  I can't access anything be it because it was part of the closing process.  I have Windows Vista running on a computer for two years.  It's been locked for more than an hour.  He says not to disable or stop computer.  I'm a little worried that I'll lose my information if I just hold down the power button on the CPU it out.  I don't know what to expect when I try to turn it back on. What should I do?

    Hi AshMR,

If the system is blocked and you have already pressed the power button, there hopefully return you to windows. However if it does not, you can try these steps to help you save in windows:

You try to run the system restore that will repair return the computer to the point while it was working fine.

To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

    a. use the recovery in the F8 menu environment and system restore options in the WinRE.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click on continue.

    b. Windows restore, choose the options listed.

    (c) in the System Restore dialog box, click on choose a different restore point and then click Next.

    d. in the list of restore points, click a restore point created before you started having the problem, and then click Next.

    d. click Finish.

Note: When you perform the system restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you have installed are removed.

    I have a lenovo thinkpad t400 and running vista business SP2 32-bit.

I have this problem since October, it seems after I install an update from the my computer window will sometimes freeze and hang on to the login page of window or when it is in the window, so I have to reset my computer hard.  Another problem, it's after I did the update, my laptop can't use the software as Rescure and recovery thinkpad thinkvantage to create return.  my laptop hangs as if I try to create a back up.

I try to reset my laptop to factory setting.  at that time, my laptop was able to use the thinkvantage software. but once again, when I install the update of the window. This won't happen again.

I called lenovo, they said that it more resembles a number rather than lenovo window, so they ask me to contact microsoft.  but I try to hv eamil them a few times... and they never getting to me...

also, I try to use the online chat thing to make contact at the times office, but for some reason, they said my product key for window does not work. so I wonder what is happening.

    Thank you for always answering...

    last updated.

I totally forgot the section Performance and reliability because...

I called lenovo last Tuesday morning telling them that the hard drive fail a test on the thinkvantage Toolbox.
so... they have no excuse for not giving me a new hard drive.

I got my new hard drive on a Friday... and I have install windows7 professional in my thinkpad t400.
took me alll night to install all drivers and programs.

now my laptop is very new on the inside. new motherboard + the new hard drive.
I try to use rescure & thinkpad recovery more.

instead... I use this programms "Acronis True Image Home 2010" call to make a backup of my system.
and created a bootable media for my laptop.
    hope this work well...

I m actually quite impress with windows7 coz boot time and stop time on the increase...

  • Windows updates break the computer

I have Windows 7 and it did its updates during the shutdown and departure to the top of the computer. But this time there not even to get to the part at the start when applying updates, it just went to Windows Startup Repair. He has done this before, but it Startup Repair has done a good job of fixing any problem and I can use the computer again. This time, however, I rebooted the computer times 6 or 7 after that Startup Repair has "solved" the problem. Nothing has changed and the computer goes to startup repair. I tried to start windows normally, but he gets a fraction of the way through the bios before restarting the computer.

Do a system repair disc (CD) on another computer of Windows 7 to the same number of bits (32 Vs 64) operating

Start the system on CD repair system.  It will offer repair options that might work.

If this does not work, you will probably be in more drastic measures.  Let know us and we can make suggestions.  We need to know things like make and model, age, type: laptop or desktop and more details that will help.
