Windows XP, no matter what service pack level that is the case, is NT 5.1.

The only exception is 64-bit Windows XP, which is NT 5.2

Of course, it could be that there is no problem with SP3 on MCE.

And what error you get exactly?

  • Update of Windows broken on HP a400n after system restore

I have a HP a400n I restored from the recovery partition.  It restores to SP1, so the first time, I added SP2, SP3 and then tried Windows Update.  It is unable to connect to update files WU.

Then, I started looking for answers and found a dozen of different solutions.  I tried several (things like a batch file being run before turning off the service of cryptography, etc. etc, re-restore then install SP2 then WU running before the SP3 upgrade to IE 8 update and try again) - nothing worked. I was reminded of SP3 issues with HP - AMD systems, but this one is Celeron based.

I do not fear the research and to try other solutions, but, since nothing I've tried has worked so far, I thought I'd see if anyone recognized as a known issue and could me given more than a shotgun solution try instead of my shotgun approach.

My apologies for having not followed here.  I tried several solutions more, all with zero success and decided to spread a little.  Yesterday, I started, restore the system from scratch again, then take the State of recovery from SP1 to SP2, Windows Update, and then go to SP3 and try again.  Same result as before - error messages for two attempts (after the upgrade to SP2 & SP3).  However, this time, my search for a solution based on error codes led me to a solution, that I had not tried it before and it worked!

For the benefit of third parties who may derive from my frustration, I will list the relevant info here for a search in the coming months he will be...

The SP2 error code was 0 x 80190194 and SP3 error code was 0x802D001.  What worked for me was to follow the advice to the http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/cannot-use-windows-update-error-number-0x8024d001/0ee8dde8-d842-4988-be81-297abc908488?page=1

I downloaded the referenced zip file, run the batch file and looked like WGET recovered a bunch of files and all over.  Which took about 4-5 minutes.  Then I rebooted (just in case), retried Windows Update and everything worked well.

    Hope this helps someone...

  • Cannot remove e-mail messages in Windows Mail

Now, all the emails that I had highlighted when everything locked have a blue message 'I' on the copy of body with the message: Message canoe is located. Contents of this message cannot be found. Then a 'white -I- in-a-blue-circle' error message opos upwards: an unknown error has occurred.

You have probably a mismatch between what the database thinks is in terms of messages and what is really there.  Try to compact and repair the database with my utility Windows Mail (see www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) and see if that solves the problem.  Beware also of the antivirus software like that can cause similar problems.  See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 see also www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm for background on how WinMail stores its messages.

  • Error message: "the site has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view", while running Windows updates.

Original title: Windows updates works do not, cannot get windows updates

I had to reinstall Windows XP service pack 2. I went to the updates and got this message. The website has encountered a problem and can not display the page that you are trying to view  I tried several times and got the same results.

The problem is that you need to install Service Pack 3 before being able to get all post-SP3 updates. :-)

Here's what you need to do:
    Preliminary work:

Download the installation files of SP3, IE8 and Microsoft Security Essentials, which is an effective antivirus/antimalware program. I prefer to keep these (and other useful files) on a USB key, but this is optional. Here are the links to all the installation of three files:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=24 (for SP3)

(You can TOTALLY ignore the message "intended for it professionals"!)

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&ID=43 (for IE8)

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/products/security-essentials (for MMS)

    1. physically disconnect from the Internet. Also unplug all unnecessary devices!

    2. temporarily disable the automatic updates. To do this:

Start | Control Panel (switch to Classic view if not already selected). Automatic updates

Select "Turn off automatic updates" and click OK.

    3. install the SP3. Restart TWICE.

    4. switch to IE8. Restart TWICE. (Note: it is important to let IE at the level before the upgrade to SP3 IE6.) After you are in SP3, then you can switch IE6 to IE8).

    5 install MSE.

(What happens very often is that someone has their software antivirus running as they try to install SP3, which often translates into chaos! "This is why it must be done after installing SP3 and IE).

    6. make sure that firewall Windows is activated (it should already be):

Start | Control Panel | Security Center

(Now you can physically reconnect to the Internet. Update Antivirus program.)

    7. visit Windows Update to download and install only the critical security updates. Restart each time you are prompted.

    8. reactivate the automatic updates.

  • Windows Update does not interact with Win XP, get the error number: 0x8024400A error number: 0 x 80240036... why?

Something happened when Windows Update downloaded a file of security on my Windows XP. I had to wipe and reload Windows XP SP2 and MS Office programs because of corruption. I had never problems with the Windows Update server to date. I tried the 'clean boot' instructions and followed the instructions forum MS for other alternatives, but I continue to receive two issues of the Server Windows Update error:

    Error number: 0x8024400A error number: 0 x 80240036

In addition, "Mr. FixIt" could not be installed because it is dependent on the SP3. I don't know what else to try. Please notify. Thank you.

I think the first thing you could try would be to get your computer up to date if you can. You can download SP3 here.

  • When you try to upgrade XP Home to XP Professional I received a message: the version of Windows you want to install is older than what is currently installed.

Some time back, I bought an XP Professional Upgrade but when I went to install it is says the upgrade is older than the existing XP Home Edition version, and would not upgrade.  I need to upgrade XP Home rather than do a complete reinstallation of the operating system.

Any ideas how to do this?  MS provides disk upgrade for people who own a legitimate copy of the operating system?  I really don't want to take the installation of XP Home for fear of losing data and all software reconstruction/resettlement.

    Thank you.

Thank you.  So just put SP3 on CD?  I understand what you're saying don't know how "wake".  Thanks, really appreciate it - is that I can do that will save a bundle!

  • Windows XP does not recognize the full HD 500 GB

I have an old version of XP Pro. My HD crashed & installed 500 GB HD sees now only 128GB. BIOS sees 500 GB. I haven't made windows to & including SP3 updates still no change. What is the solution?

Windows XP RTM can format only up to 128 GB - it took until SP1 (?) that the formatting of the larger disks was available during the installation.

Your HD will have a large part of the unallocated space - you should be able to create a second partition using all that space, now that you have installed SP3.

If you want a single system partition, then you need to extend the existing partition by using third-party tools or use a CD Pack of Service higher for installation.

  • If I uninstall Windows 7 and then reinstall it on the same computer, using the same key/copy register?

Need a quick answer here! I'm selling my older HP laptop that has Windows 7 above. I intend to uninstall the operating system, and then reinstall it to wipe all my data. The copy is just a simple upgrade from Home Premium (the laptop came with Vista). When I reinstall, can I still register by using the same key? I have heard that it is installed on a computer at any time then you can, but I'm not completely sure.

Enable is the right term, Yes. Now what happens if I simply select "Custom" when I try to install the upgrade of Windows 7 since I don't have a Vista disk?

If your Windows 7 is an upgrade license any system move to must have a previous operating system eligible before you can use it elsewhere. You may also need to reactivate by phone:
