  From what you describe (noise and other things), I would say that you don't have much chance of recovering the data, but it's up to you if you want to try the speaker or not.

  Here's what I recommend:

  Pull the hard drive and turn on the laptop.

  If the weird noise you heard has disappeared, then you can pretty much assume that the disc was the cause and replacing the disk and reinstalling the operating system will solve the problem.

  If the noise is still there, while there could be another problem, and it might be risky to throw good money after bad.

  It seems that the hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced. Laptop SATA hard detail can be used. Just be sure to get a quality at least equal the original in order to use recovery disks.   You describe a known problem with Back to My Mac which first appeared around July 13.   A 'solution' refers to those who have set up their base stations for Back to My Mac. If you did, how to follow recommended action is temporarily remove or disable this option, as follows:

  • Run the AirPort Utility.
  • Select the base and then station, select change.
    • Note: You may need to use the option "configure others...". "to access the base station. Enter the IP address of the base station, the default value is: 10.0.1.1 and base station administrator password when you are prompted.
  • On the tab of the Base Station, go back to the section of my Mac at the bottom of the window.
