BMC and IPMI have nothing to do with CARS himself.

It has everything to do with server management - also called "+ lights out management + ' (LoM). Allows you to turn on a server that is out of service. Monitor the voltage and the temperature in the server. Monitor the log of hardware events in the server. Access the server console virtually. Etc.

This is an important consideration for any production server (database, web, mail, etc.) to have implemented IPMI in place, hardened (change the default passwords) and configured for remote access to support and maintain the server.

You need not have the IPMI kernel modules installed in the operating system that is used on the server. If you have, then you can use the o/s commands to query the IPMI data (voltage of the CPU, the fan RPM speed, etc.). However, the important issue is to be able to service processor of the remote access server and run the commands IPMI and LoM.

  • ESX 4 and IPMI / Dell OpenManage Server Administrator

Does anyone else use the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator software on their ESX host?

I do a cleaning/new ESX 4 installation on a Dell PowerEdge R900 server.  I installed the OMSA without error, but when you try to start the service, you get a "driver ipmi departure: "message. "  The web interface is running, but he tells no hardware information.

She acts as IPMI is not installed at all, but shows an RPM query:

    I looked in ' / lib/modules/2.6.18-128.ESX/kernel/drivers/ ' for a modprobe IPMI driver, but can't find.

ANBODY have any ideas on where to go from here?

We have confirmed with Dell a few months previously, 6.0.3 required for ESX 4 classic, due out within 30 days of the release of GA of ESX 4 classic.  So I'd wait for 6.0.3 unless it is already available.  Dell said that they expected to be interrupted as soon as GA.

  • MMIC vs IPMI on B and C series UCS

    Hi guys,.

any chance someone can explain the difference between CIMC and IPMI. A few pages on ORC are indicating that the CIMC applies on the C series, while other pages are mention it when we talk too many blades. Can I open a web browser and type in the IP address that will show me MMIC running on B200M2? It's looking like similar MMIC on C series?

I found about UCS Manager CLI command that allows to disable IPMI and now I'm even more confused because some docs on ORC say MMIC is just an old name for BMC and I know that BMC is embedded CPU which takes care of IPMI feature...

    Kind regards

    Taenarum

So the MMIC has had many names.

WORKING IS BMC = MMIC. So if you see WORKING or BMC in all documents safely, you can replace it with CIMC. Also please bring that to our attention if you still see the WORKING or BMC in our documentation.

The MMIC chip is the same on the B and the C series. The interface is a little different, but both provide the same functionality. On a stand-alone C series the MMIC provides much more information because there is no UCSM to show inventory, to alter the BIOS and to allow that do you other things.

You can download the standalone KVM that will allow you to go directly to the KVM for a series B, but it will be different then the interface for the stand-alone version of the C-series. If a C series is integrated at the UCSM, he gets the B series interface.

The MMIC access IPMI. So now a C series if you don't have the MMIC configured you can not perform IPMI on the server. CIMC is still active for series B but IPMI is selectable via the Service profile.

    Hope that answers the questions

  • Remote access suitable for BMC on PE T110II

    Hello

I have a question. We have a T110II EP with only available for Remote Mgmt BMC.  What would be the good way/tool to access the BMC to restart the PowerEdge server for example remotely?

I know that BMC and the share of the NIC system.  In the screenshot I joined, the system seems to complain about the shared NIC...  (not sure if properly configured)

    Hello

This wiki article has instructions on the use of the IPMI remote commands. I've skimmed the article and didn't see any reference to enable IPMI over LAN. Some of our CR/iDRAC require IPMI over LAN is enabled in order to use IPMI on a GROUND connection, you may need to allow that as well.

This isn't an error message. It's just a warning message. If you have shared active NIC you should have no interface shared as a member of a team of network or LAG.

    Hello

The BMC watchdog is only intended to be used in conjunction with the OpenManage Server Administrator. It uses one of the OMSA DSM services for heart rate. If you have never installed OMSA so I don't know how the BMC watchdog has been activated. It is possible to configure a monitoring utility via IPMI, or someone may have inadvertently turned it on IPMI commands.

You can install OpenManage Server Administrator Managed Node and go to system > properties > auto-recovery. If you set this option to none, then it should turn off the BMC watchdog. If it is already set to none then set another option, apply, back to zero and then apply again.

If you enable the watchdog of BMC and OMSA must be installed and running on the system. If you decide to uninstall OMSA then you must disable the BMC watchdog first by assigning None.

  • T610 w/Dead BMC: DRAC6 express bypass BMC?

Hey all, could be a stupid question, but the history behind it, it's that there is a small business owner who is not exactly in a place to drop the $$ for a new server (at least yet, I try to buy their time) and their T610 has been restarted at random and it is exacerbated by the inability to communicate with the BMC stipulating the POST by mistake he can not find the iDRAC and restarts once to look for new front it strike even the OS so we are looking for 20-30 minutes when the server is offline whenever he decides to restart.  Windows updates are on request so that the OS is not reboot to apply updates and the CPU, RAM, hard drives don't show any error still half OpenManage items are missing "System Services Disabled' to the POST does not allow for Diagnostics and and Windows-based diagnostic kit complains of the LCL , so I can't find a more information.  EV logs show just a general hardware fault which Googlefu fails to turn anything concrete.  I'm sure that the motherboard needs to be replaced, but my boss really hate the idea of throwing a used part, so I will try to collect more clues.

So my question is, if we were to install a DRAC Express module, would he stop complaining of iDRAC (BMC) and let us use the ESM or depends on the DRAC the BMC?  In addition, I've been able to find a video for the DRAC in a R710 and she's naturally another provision and I'm trying to understand what the black rectangle in the following image:

This looks like the DRAC Express but does feel not removable.  The BMC itself can be replaced?  Should I just keep pushing for a motherboard?

    Thanks for any input!

    Hello

    SteamingLabeouf
This looks like the DRAC Express but does feel not removable.  The BMC itself can be replaced?  Should I just keep pushing for a motherboard?

You need to replace the motherboard. IDRAC express is the BMC. IDRAC is not an optional component on the R710. It is a standard component on the system board. I don't think that it is removable or replaceable.

    Hello

    Hi delahais,

To answer these questions, what is the controller board? what should I do? Take a look at the link below.

I need to upgrade a UCS field with 12 B200M3 at UCSM 2.2(1b): do I have to upgrade the controller card?

Whenever you upgrade the firmware of your UCS environment is recommend that you upgrade all of the UCS components including the components of the blade as the BMC

which version is right: 11, 5 or 8?

It depends on the version of the firmware that your UCS environment is running. For example, if your ucs environment is running firmware version 2.2 (1) and you have b200 m3 blades you want to select later who is 11.

You can check the correct version by going to the package of blades bundle UCS in UCSM (see attached screenshot)

  • iDRAC 5 access on PE R900

PE R900. Latest firmware BIOS/BMC. I only have 5 Express iDRAC. I'm having all sorts of fun problems with it.

    (1) that this or that doesn't have a web interface? I heard that he made, and that is not. I am looking for clarification.

    (2) that I should or should I not be able to SSH/Telnet to it? Once, again, for clarification.

Questions: Is the express, it is shared with the on-board. The NETWORK card is plugged into my switch, gets a connection and has a static IP address defined. I am running MS Server R2 2012, and I put explicitly that the adapter is disabled to avoid possible conflicts. I am able to ping the DRAC of any computer on my LAN. However, this is all I get. No HTTP/HTTPS/SSH/Telnet. I've never used before IPMI, so I'm not sure of how to check on that. I ran nmap on it from several computers, using the - Pn to force it to assume the host is up, and he doesn't find anything even resembling an open port. Run RACADM locally produced:

ERROR: RACADM cannot process the requested subcommand because there is no
local configuration of RAC to contact.

OSA of Dell is able to communicate with the system very well, and I am able to change the settings for remote access. I checked, and they do in fact within the parameters of the RA (CTRL-E to start).

I have updated my BMC hardware to the latest version in the middle of the troubleshooting session. Both before and after, the RA package fails to immeditaely with "this configuration is not supported."

I was losing my mind a bit. Any help is appreciated, girls and boys.

    TIA,

    Grobeoba,

On the R900 server would be just a Drac 5, at the time where the outputs 10th generations does not specify us a difference Express and enterprise. The drac 5 has a web interface. It would be https://ip assigned to drac, from there, you should see a login. You should be able to SSH to the drac, as long as port 22 is open.

One thing to check is that the server did the Drac 5 installed. When the server starts, the prompt CTRL-E, you see if poster for the BMC and Drac, the logic is shared. So you can get the CTRL-E interface without having the drac. When you access the CTRL-E interface you see just skirting Mgmt controller review and review of FW primary Backplane listed in the center of the page, or Remote Access Controller review figure as well? If the remote is not listed then the Drac is not present. Another way to see if it installed is to look inside.

    On this expansion riser card.

Do you see this card installed and wired? -

If this is not the case, the Drac card is not actually installed.

If the Drac is present at the BMC update you want to update the Drac as well.

    Here are the 2 updates

  • WOI for Poweredge 1950

I have a rack with several different generations of Poweredge 1950 servers and a few R610s.  I would like to distance the departure (WOI), stop and use the systems in the basket.  Systems do not have the DRAC cards installed.

I WOL installation for all systems and can start and stop all on the local network very well.  If I can start a unique system of p1950 remotely, then I can easily start and stop all the systems using this unique system.

But I can't do simple p1950 system to remote start.  I put the Port Forwarding on my router/modem DSL to transfer 9 UDP to the system and sees the magic packet very well... but it will not turn on.

I am familiar with the planks of the DRAC and the various management tools remotely, but reading that I did... it seems possible to be able to power and turn off the machine to the Internet.

Please can someone explain what I need to be able to remotely turn on the system?

I can do without a DRAC card installed?

This software is required to send to connect with the system and send the signal from power?

    Thank you!

You can use the ipmitool to turn on and turn off the server. For this you require not DRAC. You must follow the steps below to configure this

    1. Configure the IP address and compatible IPMI over LAN to iDRAC or BMC.

      1. R610 will have default iDRAC. For more details see section "Using the iDRAC6 Configuration utility" on iDRAC user's Guide. You can download the iDRAC from here user guide

      2. 1950, you need to configure BMC. You can configure the IP address and IPMI over LAN at similar to R610 boot
    2. Install ipmitool on a client computer. You can download ipmitool from here
    3. Run the following command to power on the server

    ipmitool - I lanplus h u Pei power on

    Hello.

The IPMI interface acts as interface between BMC and OS; This includes the server blades in their communication. Event ID 1004 IPMIDRV implies that communication between the blades and the casing is degraded. Close the chassis and reconnect the blades and observers, if the warning persists.

  • Upgrade processor PowerEdge SC1430

    I have a SC1430 with the processor Xeon 5110 (dual core 1.6)

I bought a X 5355 (quad core 2.66) because it was on a few lists of processors supported, some on these forums.

But when I installed the processor that it displayed but then stopped, saying it was incompatible.

I went back to google and found a post saying that there are different versions of the card mother sc1430 and old does not support the hearts. But then another message saying there aren't any different revisions of the motherboard and you just need to update the firmware. Ive updated the BIOS to 1.4, but this still does not work. I then found a third post saying 'I' (printed on the front panel) version only supprts demspey and woodcrest and that 'II' also supports clovertown.

I think I discovered that the x 5355 does not work with my computer, but it would be good if someone could resolve the confusion that I know which is the cpu, compatible for my SC1430.

Support for the quad-core on the SC1430 Clovertown processors requires a map of most recent revision system, is not simply an update of the BIOS to add Clovertown support to the original system board that has been released.

There are also minimum BMC and BIOS revisions that are needed to support the Clovertown CPUs. There are minimum version requirements based on the CPU stepping.

Systems shipped with a motherboard that supports the Clovertown processors will have a Roman numeral two on the right side of the collar.

  • iDRAC on Dell R610 problem

    Hello

I just got a new Dell R610 and I tried to configure the iDRAC on her card. I have it configured on interfaces of multiple T300 Dell and the ILO on the different models of HP servers successfully. But for some reason, I'm going to have serious problems with it.

I think he got an iDRAC Express card as there is no extra ethernet port on the server, just the standard 4 integrated NETWORK interface the iDRAC BIOS are version 1.70 I understand is the last.

In the screen configuration (Ctrl + E) iDRAC, iDRAC and IPMI over LAN are enabled. Selection of NIC is set to shared so for active LOM, it reports 'No. Active LOM'. VLANs are disabled, iDRAC Express stand them? -Once it works I would like to enable it if possible.

Only NIC1 (eth0) is connected to the switch. I tried configuring it with DHCP, but he never does an address even if the operating system gets a.

To remove the switch / VLAN even tried to connect NIC1 directly on an other server tcpdump and running with iDRAC configured with a static IP (the default value of 192.168.0.120). Did not get a thing of it. I could see the arp requests going out but not responses to iDRAC.

So, how do you get the iDRAC to work?

    Thank you.

Today technician Dell replaced our motherboard and this fixed a problem with the DRAC.

New motherboard uses older versions of BIOS and DRAC BIOS main:

principal: was 3.0.0, now for 2.0.11
    DRAC: was 1.70.21, now 1.41.13

DRAC works now, and, Yes, she has the web interface.

PS unfortunately, but this will not be fixed another issue we have with H200 controller or it's linux driver mpt2sas: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/777441 (ClxAdmin, if you use Linux on that server, what distribution of linux/version you are using?)
