configuration of several hardware iSCSI initiators

I have 2 qlogic iSCSI intiators in my 3.5.4 ESX Servers I need to connect to an iSCSI target in a redundant configuration. With the vSwitch network connections it is simple enough, create a vSwitch and group all interfaces NIC that you want to use for this vswitch. The network layer deals with redundancy and load balancing. With iSCSI software initiators, it looks like using the vmkernel from what I've seen in the SAN configuration guide.

Each hardware iSCSI adapter seems to have need it is the own address IP etc... How can I set up redundancy and load on 2 separate hardware initiators balancing?

Initiators of material are a little different, because they have a BIOS configuration aspect as well.  If you want to boot-from-san configuration, you must configure your initiators with their hw bios and set the IPs and the targets and LUNS to boot from BIOS hw.  With other than the boot LUN LUN, they are configured in the same way as the initiator of the sw.  Each card will be visible in the section storage cards.  You access this configuration and configure targets and LUNS on each.  Once you do this, you will see the same LUN via multiple paths, ESX will recognize the LUNS as separate for the same LUN paths and redundancy is achieved.  If your San is active/active, you can split manually which LUN will be accessible through which HBAS and load balance like that.  You will still need the vmkernel port in your vSwitch as the initiator of the software, but instead to simply configure the initiator sw 1, you configure both your HW HBA.

  • several software iSCSI initiators

    Hello

I have not heard that someone does this, so just to make sure: is it possible to connect two or more without an ESX host? As far I knew each SAN would require its iSCSI initiator, but I only know how to activate the default initiator and not add multiple.

    Thanks for your reply,

    -Rainer

Yes, it is possible to connect multiple iSCSI targets to the iSCSI Software initiator.

Create several VMkernel ports bind to the iSCSI initiator.

    • Connect vmhba34 to vmk1: esxcli swiscsi nic add - n d vmhba33 vmk1

    • Connect vmhba34 to vmk2: esxcli swiscsi nic add - n vmk2 d vmhba33

    • Check the configuration of vmhba34: esxcli swiscsi nic list vmhba33 d

    • Vmk2 and vmk1 should be listed.

It is normally used to provide multiple active paths to iSCSI storage.

You can also create additional VMkernel ports for more than one iSCSI SAN network.

  • Question on the iSCSI initiators and several NIC

    I read the attached document.

The document speaks to create more iSCSI initiators to talk to the SAN (I understand this bit).

Page 15 step 4: VMkernel Ports associated with physical cards

The document speaks about 3 network cards that have been attributed to a vSwitch.

The document then continue to talk about the creation of links to individual access to a network adapter for each VMkernel path.

    My question is:

    Why do this?

Why not create three separate vSwitches and create an initiator iSCSI for each vSwitch?

    VCP3 & VCP4 32846

    VSP4

    VTSP4

Why would you not create a vSwitch for each iSCSI NIC and VMkernel port. Why the document insists on putting all the NIC in a vSwitch?

The number and type of vSwitches is not interesting.  You can use a vSwitch or vSwitches as much as you have physical NIC.  It works as well for the former two vSwitches static or vDS.  The configuration example is just one of the ways that you can do.  Any combination is supported.

    Hello

In addition my property would be to disable the iscsi Software initiator - you want to use only the hardware iscsi adapters, don't you.

Mixing software and hw adapter is not recommended method here, as far as I know.

The closest would be on page 28 of the 4.1 "iSCSI SAN slot Guide.

Because the software initiator ESX is definitely a charge adapter, this could be considered to be applicable.

In spite of being is not clearly established, there is no summer tested enough to be considered as support even if there are no known issues.

  • Windows Setup could not configure Windows on hardware of this computer Installation error on the new hard drive

Okay so if please bear with me and be patient.  I'm not tech savvy.  I know enough to be able to remove an old hard drive and put another one, but when there are errors, I don't know what to do.

    Here's the situation.

I have a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 installed.  I started having these notifications that my hard drive could be a failure.  I tried everything that I could find to fix it without having to buy a new HARD drive without success.  The current system has a 1 TB Seagate hard drive.  I installed a memory additional bar thingie right after that I got the computer about 4 years ago.  (If someone tells me how to find the properties of real system, I post them if necessary).  Anyway, I bought a new WD 1 TB black disk hard to install before my old dies and loses all my photos and documents, etc...

I took the old drive yesterday and installed the new hard drive.  I put back the case and turned on the machine.  I put in my Windows 7 installation disc.  He began installing Windows 7... It's completely past the initial screen where it says it to load it and the other... I had accepted the license agreement, but did not have to make a profile and do the work and the reader.  I hope all this makes sense.  Then it pops up this message "installing Windows could not set up Windows on hardware on this computer."  I couldn't figure out what to do from there.  I got the new drive and put the old one back to and here I am. I tried to find solutions to this problem, but I either don't can't make heads or tails out of the responses on the internet or the solution is not exactly my problem.

Please help if you can!  And if you have any suggestions, please dumb them down so I can understand what to do.  I CAN do if loaded, you just have to not talk too irritable.  Laughing out loud

    Thank you in advance!

    Maybe not...

The Windows installation is not happy about something, and since it gets at least started which is a good thing, but your installation problem can not really be with Windows - perhaps something about Dell hardware or your 1 TB HARD drive.

I looked at your system and found this article that you can read to see if it sounds like your original question:

Windows Setup could not configure Windows on hardware on this computer.

    http://www.Dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN293812/en

Since Dell has written an article for help on this subject, it means they've met enough times to take the time to compose the article and put it on their WWW site (but, they say, it is a possible resolution).

Could you take the issue in the Dell online community where experts hang out (especially your amber light).

Another good place for support is www.bleepingcomputer.com where there is a similar topic as your question (except Vista) on a Dell and a new disk of 1 TB (also a Seagate) and Dell ideas did not work, but someone else has found a way to fix it:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/453378/installation-fails-to-complete-on-new-HDD/

The bleepingcomputer for your error message search reveals other areas and people who have got things to work in different ways, then it is perhaps another place to look for ideas.

If the installation still fails it would not hurt to do the BIOS setting and see if things are getting longer, and since you are going to write the current settings before proceeding with the adjustment you can always cancel the adjustment if things get worse.

  • Help with the hardware iSCSI initiator help

    Hi all

I don't know if this is the right place... Please forgive me if I'm in the wrong community. I am a newbie in VMWare and attempt to install my first server VMWare (ESX 4.0)... I have a HP DL 380 G6 server and a storage Equallogic PS 5000 array. I have a card HBA Qlogic ELQ 4060C on the server. I installed successfully ESX 4 and when I am connected to the console of the VI Client service and checked the configuration tab, I could see the HBA Qlogic cards there. This means that ESX recognize the HBA. I have install a volume on the Equallogic configuration / control box by using the IP address I have set up for the Qlogic HBA. But even after several reboots and renumerisations BH is unable to see the volume. I'm doing something wrong here? What is the right way to install the HBA? Should I do something else to put in place? Any help or advice or pointers to documentation is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you and best regards,

    Rupesh

    Hi Rupesh

First of all, you need not configure vmkernel for HWiSCSI network. As you say, it is only necessary for SWiSCSI.

Then, to configure HWiSCSI, make sure that you have provided the IP address, subnet, etc on the iscsi adapter. If not, configure this first either through the client adapter's bios vi/vc or hwiscsi. Make sure that this IP address can speak for the iscsi storage network.

Now, on the side of storage, MAPE to the IQN HWiSCSI iscsi lun. Provide the IP address of storage in the discovery address (dynamic discovery) or storage ip and IQN (Statici discovery)

Rescan the HBAS and you should be able to see the LUNS.

    Thank you

  • Windows cannot enable after several hardware failures

A clean reinstall of Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) on a DVD, we had from 2010 can not (re) activate. Several consecutive failures material, suspected as being due to overheating (motherboard, processor and fans) in the last month, has left us with a system that was new from zero (case) but for the powersource, the graphics card and the hard disk, in which case the supplier of our new recommended parts clean reinstall in order to recognise the new hardware.

In the middle of my attempt to reinstall, the computer crashed, and the new motherboard, surprisingly talky reported that he himself had protected comes from an influx in our unstable powersource (no wonder so many components grilled). So back to the repair shop we went. Once the store installed the new powersource, I booted up and a saw that the old facility was always present, with dialogue balloon to complain that he had to be activated because it recognizes new hardware. I ignored it and got down to the business of resettlement. Then I noticed a new problem... you guessed it... boom went to the graphics card.

Finally, after the store installed a new graphics card, and we brought a new machine with an old hard drive, I downloaded a ton of updates, but has recently begun to see dialogue balloons that windows could not activate, despite the fact that I used successfully the code on the back of the case of the installation of the DVD before that. Try to activate from paragraph returns panel system "type a different product for activation key. The product key you entered cannot be used to activate Windows on this computer"Retyping does not help. While I am aware that it is authentic, it does not help me activate Windows or buy a new product key.

I'll rather try you people first before attempting the option "automated phone system", because, obviously, automation has not helped me to this day, and I'd rather not spend time in the limbo of robot. Check the properties of the computer reveals a product which is quadripartite and digital ID, with the exception of the letters OEM in the second character, rather than the combination of letter-number 5 parts on my certificate of Authenticity sticker I have been stubbornly typing in the authentication area when prompted. It occurs to me that my attempts to install on a machine which has become essentially new piecemeal (with a power surge the Mid-install crash-induced) can read somehow as if this copy of windows has been installed on several different machines. Could be the problem? I have 26 days to go on my meter activation.

  • Configuration of several external editors

I use Lightroom 5.7.1 standalone Mac Yosemite. I use Photoshop Elements, Nik Collection, many "Topaz" Add ons, more Portrait Professional and Photomatix.

When configuring external editors, it seems to me only able to set up two "external editors". I don't know what the difference is supposed to be between an external editor and a plugin, but when I aim Nik Collection 'Plugin Manager' for example, it will not add them, but seems happy for them to be treated as external editors.

So assuming that it is correct to treat all the what above as external editors, so I can «edit in...» {"their use, how can I add them all in preferences} mounted?

I use Photoshop Elements as the first external editor. There is an option to add a second, but I don't see how, having configured for Color Efext Pro for example that I can then save it and have a new (i.e. the third, fourth, fifth etc etc etc) configured external editor. I always reconfigure this second option in the external editor for another program when I want to use it, I can't imagine is supposed to be functioning.

LR experts can shed light on what I should do. I searched many sites explains how to configure the external editor but I do not find anything discussing how to implement several external editors, i.e. more than two.

    Worminger

Worminger, you are missing a crucial step:

After you [choose] another external application, you must click the drop down menu arrow at the end of the "Preset:" box, and then select "Save current settings as new preset" this will ADD your new preset for Presets: list.

It can be misleading because you will always see the name of one of the predefined existing applications in the "Preset:" box. Don't know what you see! When you select "Save...". "you have the option of ADDING the new preset with the name you want to give him. On the second screen clip below I save a new preset for FotoSketcher (...-2) Although 'Nik Viveza 2015' appears in the preset: box.

And, as Mike said above, you can have several presets for the same application, using the different options.

  • Multipathing with SW iSCSI initiators

    Hi all

Just curious about the multiple and iSCSI paths. Summer hope to clarify a certain number of things.

Taking an example of a single ESXi 4.0 host to connect to a device iSCSI via a network using a software initiator.

A vSwitch was created on the host with two rising vmnic (two assets), which are connected to the storage network. A unique VMkernel port group was created on the vSwitch with an IP address on the storage network.

    Issues related to the:

1 have I reason to think that the configuration above do not use the two vmnic for redundancy? I assume this is the case, because it shows only a single path under the storge device?

    2. assuming that the above is correct, that if I lost any vmnic is used, I'd lose access to my storage of this host?

    3. in order to provide redundancy in case of a failure vmnic, do I need to follow the steps in the configuration guide for iSCSI SAN? (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_iscsi_san_cfg.pdf) That is to create two groups of ports on the vSwitch using vmnic active replacement (with the other unused) and use the CLI to create paths?

    4. If the default config is indeed only using a single VMnic, how can that be used?

I think I already know the answer above but would like to have a validation...

    Thank you

    Chris.

Tru Multipathing, your storage space must have at least 2 IP addresses.

Do not confuse redundancy with multiple paths.

While the two work together, you can have one without the other.

To get full redundancy and multiple paths, at a minimum, your storage server needs at least two interface IP. you need to implement a vSwitch with 2 groups of VMKernel ports, as you mentioned below. #3 and port, then bind using the CLI.

The political path roundrobin when value over (if your table is compatible).  You should then have 2 active channels.

    In your current config.

    # 1 there is redundancy, but no multipath

    # 2 No.

#3-Oui - preferred method for many reasons with HA, path table and load balancing selection.

#4-is not easy to find (at least not for me).  It really depends on how your political grouping vswitch is implemented.  Bad this refer to the experts.  Don't want to confuse.

  • How to configure rdm to use iscsi lun in a virtual machine using ms iscsi initiator?

I have equallogic SAN attached to a cisco 3750

Within the virtual machine for all readers of data other than my c:\ that has the operating system I would use iscsi data switch that has 4 network ports on four different nic cards already assigned.

According to what I read a virtual machine can use only 4 nic so I have a Production network the other three that I would

    Use it for iSCSI data.

Three ports of each virtual computer network for using ms iscsi with MPIO

I have already attached the RDM using esxi 3.5 as a physical mapping of RDM.

  • Configuration of several interfaces vlan on a layer 3 switch

I am trying to incorporate a layer 3 switch in a network. (see figure 1 below). My problem is that in the configuration below, the layer 3 switch seems to offer no additional benefit on a layer 2 switch, because it does not pass packets from Layer 3, instead, it will take an additional router configuration.

If I set up 2 interfaces like no switchports (diagram2) and create virtual interfaces on the switch of level 3, that is to say 0.1/g0, g0/0.2, 0.3/g0, g0/1.1,g0/1.2, g0/1.3, configure dot1q encapsulation and add ip addresses and subnets on each interface, so I understand that I can use the switch of level 3 as a router.

However this introduces a new problem now, VLAN 1 is on both interfaces, so devices in VLAN 1 on each interface will have point to the default gateway on this specific interface and features of VLAN 1 on G0/0.1 interface must be configured with a different subnet than those on G0/1.1 interface.

It does not seem logical, am I missing something?

    Figure 1

    Paul

On a L3 switch you do not configure subinterfaces (usually).

You create what's called Lass (Switched Virtual Interfaces) instead of this, and what are your L3 interfaces.

If your L3 switch ports are ports of L2 or other trunks or assigned to a VLAN specific.

For each VLAN you want to route you create then a SVI IE. -

    int vlan
    IP x.x.x.x
    No tap

and the default gateway for clients in this vlan is the IP assigned to the SVI.

Any other configuration of L3 interface, you add to the SVI.

The only time wherever you actually use the ports of L3 is when you connect to a router for example.
