Connecting floppy drive USB - name file empty

A friend of mine has just started using VMWare Fusion to run a virtual machine from Windows XP.  She has a player from USB floppy that she tried to connect to XP using 'Virtual Machine-> USB-> Connect floppy drive', but he tells her that she cannot have an empty file name.

I looked at the manual and it talks about the connection to a floppy image file, but nothing about the use of a USB floppy drive.

Is there something special that needs to be done to use a USB floppy drive?

I don't have a floppy drive on my Mac, so I can't test anything myself.

Thank you

She has a floppy drive USB that it tried to connect to XP using "Virtual Machine-> USB-> Connect floppy drive", but he told her that she cannot have an empty file name.

On my Mac, I can connect a USB floppy drive to a virtual machine if there a disk in there.  Also, the error message 'cannot have an empty file name' is bound using a virtual floppy not a USB floppy.

Is there something special that needs to be done to use a USB floppy drive?

No connection a USB floppy is no different then any other USB device to connect to a virtual machine.

The only downside is you can not boot a Virtual Machine directly from a USB floppy and the simplest solution is to use a virtual floppy drive.

Recently, I changed my system hardware. Got a new motherboard that does not have an IDE socket.

My previous 3.5 "IDE drive HARD internal cannot be plugged into it. So, I bought a USB (external drive enclosure HARD desktop) box for my old HDD.
    The unit works perfectly.

You must install your motherboard https://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx chipset drivers, if you don't have already done.

With an external box, waiting for the disk to be displayed in Device Manager with its own model number, not as a device of the enclosure.

  • Portege 3480CT: how to make a USB bootable floppy drive?

I need help to make a USB bootable floppy drive.
My laptop 3480CT has not the traditional floppy drive instead, it uses a USB floppy drive and the bios has an option to boot from USB FDD.

I would like to use a USB key to start (a Lexar Jumpdrive 32 MB 05dch 0080 h and GTX 1 GB 1516 h pid pid 8628 h), instead of the floppy. I want to load the boot XP on floppies, so I run recovery programs using chkdsk.

I tried the usual suspects, the bootloader makebootfat and mkbt20 HP.
I tried the demo version of the commercial product Flashboot.
I photographed a floppy back 5.0 system on the USB key using the I-Setup demo.
All failed including the specific option in the makebootfat images for FDD option and 3 different options of Flashboot.

    I ran
    http://Enos.itcollege.EE/~mkalme/Pahn/tut/tut.html

Using Hexplorer ICY, I was able to confirm that the DOS5.0 on the boot sector pendrive is identical to the diskette.
I could start in Dos5.0 from a floppy disk with drivers USB Panasonic and confirm that my Lexar was a system of 1.44 MB disk and command.com displayed in the directory. The GXT is not recognized by the Panasonic, nor BACK USB drivers to Duse 4.4 4.9. Another worrying indicator, it is my computer XP did not see all of the files on the pendrives, not command.com, or two hidden files (view all the hidden files option).

I learned that Transcend a specific option that creates a bootable 1.44 mb floppy
    image on their USB key.

Here is what I have gathered, corrections and suggestions are welcome.

Interface USB the USB protocol specifications

    bInterfaceSubClass field specifies the Protocol
01 order reduced block (RBC) a flash device
UFI 04 a floppy drive floppy drive
05 FDD SFF-8070i SFF-8070i command blocks however, funding may be in a different subclass for example RBC

bInterfaceProtocol field specifies the transport protocol
00 control/Bulk/Interrupt (CBI) with break of completion for FFD only
01 CBI without interruption of completion for the FDD only

I don't know if the USB controller must imitate the FDD Protocol.

    Any ideas?

    Hello

You cannot boot from the USB key.
The BIOS of the laptop does not support something like that.
Laptop factory supports and use different BIOS versions. As far as I know on this laptop Toshiba BIOS was installed.

To my knowledge this BIOS does not support booting from the USB key, but only the HDD, ODD, LAN or USB - FDD.
If you want to boot from USB FDD, you can create a bootable FDD floppy.
Windows operating system creates the boot floppy drive when you right click on the connected floppy drive and select format. Then simply choose the option create MS-DOS startup disk start.

  • Solution: The USB floppy drive is not recognized during installation of XP of RAID

    Hello

This Solution is for notebooks Qosmio with RAID driver during (manual installation of windows)

I found the Solution to this problem,

[When you install Microsoft Windows XP by using a floppy drive USB on a player who]
requires a driver during the installation, the USB floppy drive is not recognized in all
installation. When Windows XP searches the driver of the second time, he will not be able to see
the floppy USB drive drive and prompts the user for the driver (RAID) again.
The installation will never reach this point. ]

    Solution:

This is a limitation of Microsoft, the Floppy Drive are do not appear in the file Windows 'txtsetup.sif.

Simply change the floppy drive in another brand and avoid Usb 2.0 external Usb floppy plus old 1 Try
Also note the back of drive sometimes they write (no bootable) avoid this also

  • File Explorer doesn't recognize the floppy drive.

File Explorer Windows 8 does not recognize my floppy drive! The drive can be accessed via the command prompt, so on the very rare occasions when should he use it is not a serious problem, but I would like to be able to make the easy way - funny how the old DOS commands always come naturally for me, however!

Problem solved! The floppy drive does show not under 'computer' in the left column, but I found by clicking on "computer", it is listed in the main window. Looks like I was just framed by one of the minor differences between versions of Windows 8 and earlier!

I think that the confusion is due to the difference in behavior of reader to other removable drives - connect a USB drive or insert a disc in the DVD/CD player & the drive letter immediately appears in the left column. Insert a disk in the floppy drive and the drive does not read it - it is necessary to click on the drive in the main & open the from there.

  • External USB floppy drive no longer works

I have a model #: p6710f computer from HP running Windows 7 desktop.

I myself bought an external Bytecc USB Portable diskette (Floppy) disk. Although it did not work initially, it began to work a week later after some updates on my computer running. The work of at least a year since then diskette drive.

Now the last month, the floppy drive does not show in the list where you can find the C drive or the D drive. You can hear the floppy drive respond when it is first plugged in, but it does not show on the screen which you access.

Is there anyone who is able to understand why the floppy USB drive won't work with my computer? What should I do to solve the problem?

Thank you for your response. Uninstalling the driver, restart the computer, and then reinstall the process... I had already tried this a few days ago. Although the computer recognizes drive as new hardware and load the driver, I was not yet able to access the disk. But here's the strange thing...

My office is where I got this problem. Yesterday, I connect the floppy drive for my laptop for the first time. The laptop recognized as new hardware and load the driver. I was able to use the floppy drive on the laptop. Out of curiosity, I disconnect the floppy (USB connection) of the laptop drive and reconnect to the desktop computer. The Office has recognized as new hardware and load the driver. I am now able to use the floppy drive on the desktop. Weird that it is... my question to get the floppy drive on the Office to work is now resolved.

  • Password reset disk only describes the use of floppy drive A (and they are obsolete). Password reset disk cannot be a CD-DVD, I can use a USB flash instead of the floppy drive?

I wanted to create a RESET DISK of PASSWORD, but NOOOOO - my machine has a FLOPPY DRIVE. No product only the CD/DVD PLAYERS and one cannot change the a drive to a different letter designation.

If you really NEED to do this, you are up the proverbial Creek, apparently.  Hard to believe!   How long has he given now that ANYONE used FLOPPEIES (small square disks)?  Certainly, we are asked not to believe that nobody is realized for this oversight!  I TRIED a CD/DVD - no dice.  My machine has 2 CD/DVD players, a Terrabyte Mobile with a slot drive.  My spouse has built this machine, and it is ensured that there are enough USB connectors that I could plant some tulips!  (It's photography & video editing - retirees have a busy life, that pays well.)  There are sites for readers of any persuasion EXCEPT the 1998 'PLACE floppy DISKS'.  Also, as with most machines, I do not want to return and crush things that my husband has a loading on the drives and call other than the names they bear within the network as things go well, otherwise.  We can't decide to call H Drive (CD/DVD drive), drive A, to say, just for the sake of my need to create a password reset disk.  My machine does not allow me to do things on the "fly".  I have to create a NEW one (and download something from those that already exist).  A ray of light shines through the same mess!  I think that maybe I can use a "USB key"?  Does not have a CD rom, but just explore, I ran across the words using a player instead of 'A' USB flash drive.  Hoping that USB key or "memory stick" is acceptable!

    Hi Janice,.

If you are using Vista, please see the following: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/create-a-vista-password-reset-disk-using-a-usb-flash-drive/547.

If using Windows 7, please see the following: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/use-a-usb-flash-drive-to-create-windows-password-reset-disk-in-windows-7/4142?tag=rbxccnbtr1.

From what I read, it seems quite simple and easy in both cases.  And not worry about drive letters - it will take whatever drive letter you choose (or who has been assigned to the flash player).

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • USB 3.0 connecting high-speed USB 2.0 drive

I have a Western Digital 1 TB USB 3.0 external hard drive. I connect it to the USB 3.0 port (blue) on my laptop Acer Aspire 5755-6647, who works under Windows 7 x 64.

When you connect, I get the "this device can perform faster: this USB mass storage device can transfer information faster if you connect it to a Super Speed USB 3.0 port" message. When you copy files to the drive, I get about 32 MB/s, which corresponds to a USB 2.0 speed.

I tried to disable the USB power management in the utility USB 3.0 host controller. I tried to uninstall the device and put it back. I'm using the cable supplied with the disc and is a USB 3.0 cable. I have the latest Renesas USB 3.0 driver installed (2.0.34.0). I also tried to use an older driver from Renesas. My BIOS is updated (P5WE0121).

I don't know what else to do. If it helps, the first time I have connected my laptop hard drive, it's on a USB 2.0 port (I had for some reason any remembered which side of the laptop had the port 3.0 and does not check for blue). As I have said, however, I completely uninstalled the device. I suspect that Windows can be "remember" the device and install with the 2.0 driver.

Update: I finally try one last thing before you go to Acer support. I thought that perhaps not enough power provided by my USB 3.0 port on the drive, forcing him to 'downgrade' 2.0. So I bought a cable to Yfor $5 to offer auxiliary power of the adjacent 2.0 port. Result: IT WORKS. Immediately connected as a USB 3.0 peripheral speed and transfer is USB 3.0.

Solved. A little disappointed with the Acer/Intel for the USB 3.0 under normal, however.

  • Window Vista Ultimate 2007 backup files empty on the external drive.

The computer is a desktop HP running Windows Vista Ultimate 2007, 32 Bit OS, RAM 400 GB and Intel Quad CPU 2 .4GHz.

I ran Windows Vista backup for a full backup and a backup of the file.  When I look at the external disk to verify the backup files are empty.  There are two created on the external hard drive, but both files are empty.  The program indicates that the backup routine successfully on the external drive. I have not received any error message.

I use a Toshiba external drive with 500 + GB.  I have a lot of room.  I tried twice.  The first time I reformatted the external drive using Windows and revived the full backup only.  Once again the image file on the external drive shows 0 bytes, 0 files.

I wonder why the backup files are not getting moved on the external drive.

    Hi BEM Consult,.

    1. are you allowing Windows to choose recommended backup or you choose "Let me pick" option on the backup configuration window?

We recommend that you connect the external hard drive on another computer and check if the size of the backup file is in the list.

Check if you have selected all the items in the backup settings to create a backup file. Try to create a new backup file by selecting all items on the Backup Wizard and check the result.

  • Cannot use the Exteranl USB with Windows 7 floppy drive

I have a removable disk drive 3.5 inch USB connected to my computer running Windows 7.  When I plugged it there was the usual beep that had plugged in an external drive and only came a message that the drivers were installed correctly and the drive is ready for use.  However:

    a. the player is not visible in Explorer, but appears in the Disk Manager and control panel (material & sound-devices and printers).  It "works" according to Disk Manager.

    b. when I insert a floppy disk, nothing does not appear in the Explorer

    c. I tried without success drive letter assignment (miss me something here, I think and need for a better prescription to follow)

I saw a post elsewhere on the "group policy objectives" but got lost in the talk of technology and could not get something resembling the description in the post.

Suggestions, please, which will help to get the job of the thing.

    Hello

Thanks for posting your query on the Microsoft Community.

With the description, I understand that you can not use the floppy drive external USB on your Windows 7 computer.

I would be grateful if you could help me with more information to better understand the problem and a solution:

    1. have you tried another USB port using the USB floppy? If this isn't the case, I suggest you try to use it in another port.

2 have you tried to use the USB port on a different computer/machine? If not, try to use it in another computer.

This problem can occur because of incorrect settings. In order to solve the problem, I would suggest trying the following methods and check if this is useful:

Method 1 : Troubleshooting hardware and peripheral

Integrated the hardware and devices troubleshooter can automatically detect and fix most of the incorrect settings and errors that could cause problems with the equipment. I suggest you run the troubleshooter to check if there is no problem with the graphics card. See albums as follows:

    1. open Control Panel

    2. click Troubleshooting and select the option to display all on the left pane.

    3. click Troubleshooting of hardware and devices and follow the prompts.

Try Method 2, if the problem persists

Method 2 : Install the drivers in Compatibility Mode

I suggest that you try to download the drivers from floppy drive designed for Windows XP or Vista and then install it in compatibility mode.

Make older programs in this version of Windows
