If this is not the case, start in Recovery Mode, select disk utility and make a disk first aid. If that doesn't work or you can't get into Recovery Mode, then try Internet Recovery Mode, while the Mac is connected to the Internet (press Command + Option + R) so it starts off Apple servers and reinstall OS X. If all goes well, you won't lose too much data.
