Defragmentation of system

How long does take to defragment my computer

Hello

There is no easy answer because Windows Defrag in Vista is designed to be a background task and
It may take several hours to complete. The size of the disk, fragmentation level, ongoing programs of execution
and other factors can affect how long a defragmentation takes however, it will never quickly in Vista or
Windows 7.

  • IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x0000000A after installing Windows updates

Blue screen with the following information:
    IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    STOP: OxOOOOOOOA

I get this error for the second time in two months on a Lenovo R61 laptop after installation of the latest version of Windows Update there is very little time.  Sometimes after a few minutes after the start-up of the machine without provication.  The first time was the same scenario, but seemed to go away after a week or so mysteriously.  I used the laptop for almost a year with no problems before installing updates.

I have Vista pre-installed with the recent updates installed.

I don't have a new hardware or drivers that could lead to conflict - it comes factory all installed on the laptop.

I have 2 GB of RAM, but I have a NVIDIA chipset.

I tried the defragmentation tools, system repair, etc. without change to the problem.  Any advice?

    Hello

Check the updates of Windows to see if a driver has been updated all the time that these questions came.

    Cause

This bug check is issued if the memory paged (or invalid) is accessible when the IRQL is too high.

The error that usually generates this bug check occurs after the installation of the faulty device driver or service system, BIOS.

If you encounter a bug 0xA control during the upgrade to a later version of Windows, this error can be caused by a device driver, system service, an anti-virus or a backup tool that is not compatible with the new version.

    Solve the problem

If a kernel debugger is available, get a stack trace.

To resolve an error caused by the faulty device driver or service system, BIOS

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. Press F8 to character-based menu that displays the choice of operating system.
    3. In the Windows Advanced Options menu, select last known good Configuration . This option is most effective when a pilot or a service is added at a time.

To resolve an error caused by an incompatible device driver, system service, virus scanner, or backup tool

    1. Check the system log in Event Viewer for error messages that may identify the device or driver that caused the error.
    2. Try disabling the cache in memory of the BIOS.
    3. Run the diagnostics of equipment provided by the manufacturer of the system, in particular the scanner memory. For more information about these procedures, see the manual of your computer.
    4. Make sure that the latest Service Pack is installed.
    5. If your system has cards (SCSI) small computer system interface, contact the card manufacturer for updated Windows drivers. Try to disable sync negotiation in the SCSI BIOS, check the wiring and the SCSI ID of each device and confirming the proper termination.
    6. For devices (IDE) peripheral electronic integrated, set the built-in as only primary IDE port. Also, check each IDE device to the right setting master/slave/stand alone. Try to remove all IDE devices except for the hard drives.

If the message appears during installation of Windows, make sure that the computer and installed devices are listed in the list of the products tested Microsoft Windows market.

    Comments

Before upgrading to a new version of Windows, remove all third-party device drivers and system services and disable any antivirus. Contact software manufacturers for updates of these third-party tools.

  • some files have not been defragmented

    Original title: defragmentation of system

some files do not have defragmentation mesg.

Please provide additional information on your system:
What is your system brand and model?
What is your Version of XP and the Service Pack?
The defragmentation report lists files that cannot be defragmented - is that what you are talking about and what are the names of the files
    ?
If you run low the Windows Defragmenter disk space may have difficulty defragmenting your hard drive.  XP needs of 15% of the total capacity of the hard drive to run properly (you will get an information message if you do not have enough space).
The XP Defragmenter cannot defragment the files that are in use (such as the registry, newspapers, events, pagefile.sys files, etc.), so they can appear as fragmented in the defragmentation report files.  These files need to be defragmented before XP load completely and starts to use these files.
On a healthy system, it is certainly possible to have zero files fragmented (according the XP report) using PageDefrag.  This does not always mean that you will suddenly see more free space on your HARD drive, so don't let your expectations go beyond the reality when you get to zero the defragmented files and have still not run out of space.
You can read and download PageDefrag download here:
Here is an example of such a report showing no fragmented files that I ran on my system:
    Defrag results
    Volume (c)
    Volume size = 37,26 GB
    Cluster size = 4 KB
    Used space = 12,70 GB
    Space free = 24.56 GB
Percentage of free space = 39 percent
    Fragmentation of the volume
    Total fragmentation = 0%
Fragmentation of files = 0 percent
Fragmentation of free space = 0%
    Fragmentation of files
    Total fragmented files = 0
    Total excess fragments = 0
Way of fragments per file = 0.00
    Pagefile fragmentation
The pagefile size = 1536 MB
    Total fragments = 0
    File fragmentation
    Total records = 3 918
    Fragmented folders = 0
    Excess folder fragments = 0
The Table of master files (MFT) fragmentation
    MFT size = 94 MB
    Number of MFT records = 31 444
    Percentage used MFT = 12%
Total of fragments in the MFT = 0
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fragments of files in file size that cannot be defragmented
    None
There are many free third-party defragmenters that you can download from the Internet.    People like other tools better than casting in the XP Defragmenter, even if you can see in the report that precedes, the XP Defragmenter is certainly capable of a result of zero of fragmented files.
If you need help understanding your XP defragmentation report, save it in a text file and post it here (as I did mine).

  • Defragment drive in HP Assistant update takes forever.

I use HP Assistant development on pc Pavilion Elite e9260f, and the session to defragment took more than 16 hours.   The computer has an i5 processor and a 1 TB hard drive. Is this normal?

    Indywalkers, welcome to the forum.

No, this seems to be abnormal.  I suggest stop defragmentation and try to use Disk Defragmenter in system tools; Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Defragmenter.  I just defragged my HDD (500 GB) in less than 10 minutes.  It can a little longer if your HARD drive has not been defragmented for awhile.

NOTE: When I used support Assistant to defragment my HARD drive failed.  It worked perfectly using the method I suggested above.

Please let us know if this solved your problem or not.

  • My computer crashes because of microsoft services

    Hi all

I don't know if it is displayed everywhere elsewhere or if im not in the right Department, if any of you please redirect me.

Now for the issue. A few days ago, I turned on my computer and it froze. It froze all showing the office (all the shortcuts and icons were there) but when I put my cursor over the taskbar, things were going to turn into the loading circle. I could click on the office, but then it would freeze too. CTRL + ALT + DEL didn't work, nor the windows button, alt f4 or anything else. Had to restart manually by using the restart on lap button. Initially, the only way to make it work again was to enter in safe mode and restore system to update critical windows. Which fixed the problem only for this perticular restart, if you restarted the pc problem reoccured and had to start all over again. After I saw that by selecting Start from the last know configuration by pressing f8 at startup, I was also able to work around this problem but once again only for this specific initialization. I also tried the system repair via boot and the windows CD, but windows has detected no errors (?). So I searched online for the problem and found a thread of usefell on how to do a clean boot. http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

After many restarts and a lot of boot to the last known configuration, I came to the conclusion of paragraph last step 5. As a last step i rebooted since the last good configuration known and seen that microsoft services is running, and who have been arrested. (I came to the reason that the problem is caused by one of the stop microsoft services have I reason to suppose that?) The problem is there are much too that many order services and im asking if anyone knows a way I can quickly find without having to reboot every time one by one and if anyone else has had the same problem. (Oh and is it possible to list all the services does not).

    My computer specs are:

  • Defragmentation system problem

    Separated from this thread.

These answers do not help somehow. What is the 'system' & why must he be defragmented if my readers are 0% fragmented?

I click on defrag for system & nothing happens except that I thought that my system is 8% fragmented. Why?

Quite honestly I would ignore it, but if you do not want to push a little further you can.  If you open disk management (just type "disk" in your Start menu/screen to find), you should see this drive system (which can be a real player, or just more likely partition).

From here you can right click and assign a drive letter for a minute so you can explore the disc. Remove the drive letter when you are finished.

But if that's what I think it is, these volumes being fragmented is usually because they gave no movable system on them, so they will always show as fragmented and since they are read-only will not same the defragmentation process.  It won't slow down your system, however, I am sure of that because he has not assigned a letter, it's guaranteed essentially it is not used for daily operations.

My computer is as I said above a desk with the microsoft XP program and is a little less than five years.  It has been slow and it dawned on me that I hadn't used the disk cleanup or some defrag for a while, but I clicked on start, all programs, accessories, System Tools was is no longer.  I have not been able to access the disk cleanup or defragment option and hope that out there, can someone advise me how to get this feature.

You can run Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter disk since the start > run box by typing the following

    Cleanmgr
    Dfrg.msc

You can restore all of the 'Accessories' group (including system tools) by following the directions here--> http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Accessories.htm

Or you could just create shortcuts to

    C:\Windows\system32\dfrg.msc
    and
    %SystemRoot%\System32\cleanmgr.exe

Note that % SystemRoot % is the directory where Windows.  You can use this form or explicit as in the example for the shortcut from the Defrag.

  • After you run the XP Disk Defragmenter, system crashes or runs very slowly

When I run Disk Defragmenter after its finished to start my computer hangs up and slow real execution.

Also, some installed start programs acting weird. like taking a lot of time to load up or when I use them that they cling

    or stop responding all together.

To work the way they are supposed to do, I have to uninstall and then reinstall. Why is this happening?

I thought that the operation of Disk Defragmenter only deleted of fragmented files that are no longer in use, or not is more necessary.

So nobody knows what is happening here?

    Thank you.

I agree with Gerry Cornel, this stemmed not Disk Defragmenter.

There is nothing wrong with the Disk Defragmenter - it works well for what it was intended: temporary, occasional use. If anything, it gets abused and forced to do jobs he was supposed to never do, like defragmentation huge disks that get heavy use and therefore are strongly defragmented, etc..

Here is a routine that I've compiled over the years to troubleshoot issues with Disk Defragmenter that proved very useful if you want to continue with this problem:

There are several reasons why the built-in Defragmenter may not work correctly:

    0. it is malware on the system. Solution: Run an anti-virus control and also a spyware check.

    1. the disk is too full (you need at least 15% free space, sometimes 20%). Solution: Delete files unnecessary and programs until you have more than 20% free space.

    2. the disc is damaged and must be repaired. Solution:

    a. open "My computer" and right-click on the drive that you want to disable frag.
    b. Select 'Properties' and click on 'tools '.
    c. Select "Check now" to check the drive for errors.
    d. Select the two options and click on 'start '.

(This can take time and can restart the PC so that it can do the check at boot time. Be patient and let it complete).

    3. Disk Defragmenter can be altered, needing a system restore to fix it. Solution:

    a. start - all programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore (click here to open);
    b. Select a good restore point before you start having problems with Disk Defragmenter.
    c. start the restore process and let an end (descriptive name of something restore operation as "Repair Defrag").

    4. There are other programs that run the Defragmenter interruption integrated. Solution:
    a. close all running programs.
    b. If you think there may be some programs that run in the background.
    c. press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and
    d. Select "start Task Manager".
    e. under the 'Applications' tab, you will find a list of all running applications - you can close these by selecting "end task."

    5. If still no luck, try disabling the screen saver when you run Disk Defrag (you should very well leave the system only when running the built-in defragmentation utility).

    6. If still no go, try to run the defragmenter in Mode without failure. If she runs, something interferes with her and stalking interference may not be easy. Note: Some versions of Windows 7 disables the ability to run the Defragmenter built-in in safe mode. If disabled, it will say when you try to start it in safe mode.

7 Disk Defragmenter may no longer be on the system or is damaged while it needs a re - install. Solution: Reinstall the built-in function.

There are several ways to re - install the built-in Defragmenter:

    A:
    a. open the menu 'start '.
    b. type '% Windir%\Inf' in the 'Search' box and press 'Enter '.
    c. in the window that opens, find the file named "dfrg.inf.
    d. right-click on "dfrg.inf" and "install".

    B:
    a. go into "start > run" on your computer.
    b. Type "rundll32.exe setupapi, InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132% windir%\inf\dfrg.inf" and press "Enter."
    3. click 'OK' to make the program automatically reinstall itself.

    C:
    a. go to start > all programs > Accessories > right click on command prompt > select 'run as administrator '.
    b. at the command prompt, type "regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll" and press "enter."
    c. type 'regsvr32 dfrgui.dll' and press 'Enter '. This will reinstall the missing Defragmenter files.

    8. most of the problems will be solved by #6 above, but if not, and if your windows installation is otherwise working well, you should consider to download a free trial of a Defrag tool commercial rather than drastic measures to restore the functionality built-s. Third-party programs are more robust and many work in the background, so you can use your PC during defragmentation.

Most third party programs offer a free, fully functional trial (better ones are for 30 days). Install one of them allows you to disable built-in and if you decide to uninstall, removal will replace the built-in function, repaired several times in the process: it's worth a try...

Here's a recent Top 10 comments side-by-side comparison of the best available defragmentation programs:

The gold medal is the only defrag program that also prevents the fragmentation (see comment).

Why is it good to prevent fragmentation?

Basically, it significantly increases life expectancy of your hard drive (especially since you don't have to leave the system on all night - a much 'greener' agricultural practice), not to mention it also increases the performance of the system.

Find out what the review has to say on this.

    Good luck to you!

PS: If still no go, repair may involve editing the registry or repair installation of windows and possibly re - install windows itself. These aren't simple solutions. If so, indicate if they can be provided.

  • "System Tools" icon is out of the office, lack also disk cleanup and defragmentation in Windows XP

The 'System tools' icon on my desktop disappeared.  I used it when I defragmented the computer and disk cleanup.

When I hit 'start' 'Programs', 'Accessories' I have 'System tools' option, but when it is open, the icons are many and unintelliglble for me. There is nothing of cleaning disk or Defrag.  How can I get my old icon on the desktop to disk cleanup and defragmentation among other choices?

    Thanks for the tips.
