Emergency technical - SCAM or phishing?
I have signed in error of the UTH help last night. I became suspicious after the signing and found research that it is essentially a scam online. What I've seen do, is use CClear to remove my logs of error messages, search for the tree of my HDD and fast scanner MSE and charge me a bunch of money. I pray that this is just a scam delivering not much for a lot of money rather than the phishing scam which extracted valuable information from my computer. As far as I can tell that I deleted the software they installed last night, changed my internet and financial passwords, requested my money back guarantee (they actually recalled this mornng to see how my system was for their 'work'). Big surprise, their work does not seem to have done much to my system performance. Let's see if they actually cancel the payment. Now I'm corresponding in the world of user MS to add my two cents to this type of scam. I would appreciate any other suggestions (knowing that the horse may already be out of the barn).
Thank you
Jim

My old father just bought a new iMac 3 weeks after the death of his previous mac of 10 years ago. He is not very computer and had a time with the learning curve.
Yesterday, while online, he fell for one of those notices of popups indicating that his computer was 'at risk' - he called the phone # & handed her credit card information... Immediately, they have had access, has taken control of his computer and downloaded something while he was on the phone with him. That scared him and he stopped.
He called the credit card company to refuse the $50 fee that had been immediately posted on his account. I fear however, that some sort of malicious software have been installed and maybe they have access to his personal information and passwords, etc. He doesn't know who he talked to, or what has been downloaded...
What needs to be done to identify and remove what has been installed? I don't want him being a victim of identity theft.
Thanks for your suggestions.
First of all, have the card cancelled and have the Bank to launch a new. Change all passwords. Tell him that never to do that again.

The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Difficulty of pop-ups in browser that support Safari.
Common pop - ups include a message saying that the Government has taken over your computer and you pay release (often called "Moneypak"), or a false message saying that your computer has been infected and you need to call a number of tech support (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it to be resolved. First of all, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and that your computer has not been assigned. This "hack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so don't pay not money, call number, or provide personal information. This article will give an overview of the solution to remove the pop-up window.
Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go by clicking 'OK' or 'Cancel '. In addition, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in grey, including the option to leave Safari. You'll probably force quit Safari. To do this, press command + option + ESC, select Safari, press on force quit.
Relaunch Safari
If you restart Safari, the page will reopen. To avoid this, hold the "Shift" key when opening Safari. This will prevent windows since the last time that Safari was running since the reopening.
It will not work in all cases. The SHIFT key must be maintained at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window is displayed again. In these circumstances, after force quit Safari, turn off Wi - Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then restart Safari normally. He'll try to reload the malicious Web page, but without a connection, it will not be able to. Leave this page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com and try to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet and the page that you entered is displayed rather than the malicious.
It is unlikely that something has been installed because these sites go after Windows systems. The software does not work on Mac.

Hi BuckarooBilly,
This is a scam or 'phishing '. Do not respond to this e-mail.
"Client Gentile" shows that it is a scam. Apple has registered your name and contact information safe. Apple you would by your name, not 'Dear customer '.
Do not delete this e-mail, until the other members of this forum to give you advice on how to safely email to Apple.

I got a call asking me to get my refund to a technical scam (don't think I never had). The appellant wanted me to go to the command prompt and enter "ASSOC" find my "CSLID' that was on the last line. When I refused the appellant request I go on the site "www.microsoftrefund.webs.com" to check he was with the "FTC" because the site was a common site, then he wanted me to download a remote user program I refused and ended the call. A scam, right?
Calls unrequested telephone of this nature are almost always a common scam. Do not let them give any info, do not give access to your PC, not give them all the money and do not go to all the websites that they suggest. One moment.

Windows sounds users randomly to update slow computers
I get phone calls from 'windows' with foreign voices asking me to update my computer while they are on the phone because my computer is dangerous with many apps that slow down and they'll talk me through to change that. Is this a real phone call from you please?
This is a scam or phishing attempt. Do not give any information. They try to make you run malicious software on your computer and to hijack personal information.
Microsoft do NOT pick up the phone and start dialing customers and never phones/e-mails asking for personal information or asking them to visit a web site! Please do not take into account these calls and hang up immediately.
Click on the following article for more information.

Is that what Apple alert email legitimate?
I received an email this morning indicating my user ID was used to download an application on a device not associated with my account. The e-mail provided a link to reset my password. I have not used the link, but I did go to the Apple site and change my password. I just got the same email.
Is it legitimate, or is it a scam or phishing effort?
You do so correctly, always go to the site directly yourself and not by a link from a few emails.
If the e-mail addresses you with your full name, then it is. (Especially if you are changing the password).
Sign up with Dear customer or something similar is a phishing attempt, do not respond.

Compromised security fixing Macbook Air running Lion.
My mother got scammed and some people have taken complete control of his computer remotely. While she didn't give them his information of the Bank, they had total control and therefore no matter what on the computer that could be compromised should be supposed to be compromised. I plan to wipe the drive and reinstall the software. I was wondering two things...
Is the recovery partition that put on the computer somewhere safe to reinstall it from Apple?
She's not all backups. She has some JPEG files she wants. What is the best way to transfer? I was thinking a USB key I need to scan with Symantec antivirus. But I've heard that usbs are dangerous?
She has a Macbook Air. She was running Lion (10.7). I don't know until I get my hands on it tomorrow...
Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.
Nothing on this box is entirely safe to be safe - even the backups can be suspect.
See re - install or try surgery? for a recent discussion of the present.
Your own USB drives are very likely very well. Yes, there are ways that USB drives you pick up in a parking lot or in trade shows can cause problems, but this isn't the case here. Buy the disc, erase and format it in HFS + on your Mac and allows to transfer what is important.
I would probably do a full backup of the entire system on an external drive, on the off chance that there is something else that may be necessary.
FWIW, anti-virus and anti-malware tools are not known to be particularly robust or reliable products, are not intended to detect backdoors, some have a history of having backdoors and security bugs in packages and are not designed to defend against what is happening in a growing number of people; against scams and phishing attacks, as has happened here.
