"External I/O load detected on a data store" on LUN in vSphere Client version 4.1.0 build 345043

Hello

I have an ESX environment into a cluster of BL460G6 and 4 VMware ESXi, 4.1.0 installation 348481 in it.

I have active DRS and the parameter ' level of automation of Migration: "="fully automated ".

If I open the 'Home' = > 'Inventory' = > 'Warehouses', I have 26 MON, but only 9 in "mode healty", everyone has the following Alerts tab "alarms":

Name:                                                                                    Description:

Default alarm "Workload external I/O detected on a data store" which triggers if an external I/O workload is detected on a data store.

Default alarm 'Use of data on the disk store' to monitor the use of disk data store.

If I open "Alarm settings" on the "load external I/O detected on a data store" and choose the tab 'Triggers', the event carries the name according to 'vim.event.NonVIWorkloadDetectedOnDatastoreEvent', but I do not see what is coursing the alarm.

What can I do to remove this alert? Is this a hardware issue on my LUN that generated this alert? (If Yes, what can I do about it?)

Kind regards

Carl-Marius

You must have an Enterprise license.

Then check in the properties of the data store to see if the IGCS flag is set.

For NOTTM there is a column in the list of data store where you can see if if on acceleration or not.

OK, after working with NetApp and VMware on a conference call (after both made each other) bottom line "fix" was to remove the iSCSI port bindings, remove broken paths, remove the vSwitches and rebuild again.

    1. create vKernel vSwitch with appropriate port group

    2. set the MTU to 9000 on the port group and vSwitch

    3. create the bindings for each interface iSCSI Port

    4 re-scan

5 successfully create the data store

Oddly enough, I had to repeat this process 3 times for one of the blades, but it worked the first time for 3 other involved blades.

VMware technical support did provide the following as a look at the LUN of the CLI:

    1. / vmfs/devices/disks cd

    ls-l

We see and out of all the available discs

    Identify the Lun Naa.xxxxxxxx

    2. run the Naa.xxxxx reported in step 2

    partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.xxxxxxx

If there is a partition, you might see something similar to

    1 63 2249099 131 128 > 1 is the partition number

    or

You can see and error, if error please contact technical support

    3. If there is partition, you can delete

    partedUtil remove /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.xxxxxxx 1

NOTE: This process did not work, but is still useful nonetheless. It could work if the LUN has been used by another operating system and need cleaning. But my situation was all greenfield.

  • Detach the 3.5 data store and pick up VSphere

I have an ESX 3.5 Server (no updates).  The server has two data warehouses.  The first is physically located on the server and the second is a DAS MSA-60 and is connected to a separate controller.  I want to install a new copy of VSphere 4.0 U2.  I moved all the VMS to the DAS storage and there is NO data on the local data store servers.

The plan is to turn off the server physically detach from the MSA-60, install a new copy of vsphere, turn off the machine physically re - attach the MSA-60 and restart.  I guess that Vsphere will see the data store immediately, or maybe that I have to scan for it and my vm will be there.  Of course, I'll have to their inventory, upgrade tools, then upgrade the hardware.

My biggest fear is that I'll lose the virtual machine.  Any reason why this happens because of the process?

    Hello

It sounds good, your virtual machine is not deleted if you disconnect the storage before the formatting of your server.

  • What is a relationship between the data store and LUN?

    Hello

I added 3 LUNS to a data store, but I can't list them since the MOB data store. Could someone tell me how to do it.

    Thanks in advance.

LUNS was formatted as VMFS and created a data store? If not, it will not be displayed. You can search for available LUNS that can be used to create a VMFS with QueryAvailableDisksForVmfs volume

  • Cannot create the data store: the current licence or ESXi version prohibited the execution of the requested operation.

using vicfg-nas I am unable to create/remove a datastore nfs on my lab running esxi 6 at home. Is this not supported? Listing them works well. I can create/delete data warehouses nfs using the client to vcenter very well, but it's a little embarrassing.

I guess that the host is allowed with the free edition of hypervisor! One of the few restrictions of the free version of hypervisor is access to the API. In order to have "write access" (i.e. change things rather than the list of them) you must run the host in evaluation mode, or license (Essentials or better).

  • Match each data store its Lun ID and the list of virtual machines in each data store

    Hello

Can anyone help? I'm looking to create a report that will show each Monday name and store data to data warehouses, the list virtual machines belonging to the storage of data and the name of the VCenter at the top of the report. I tried several combinations but was more difficult to get the Monday. Any help appreciated gratefully.

    Thank you

If you use only LUNS is an easy way to get the canonical name:

    Get-datastore. {Select-Object Name,@{Name="CanonicalName"; expression = {$_.extensiondata.info.vmfs.extent.diskname}}

I don't understand your requirement regarding the name vCenter, but for everything else

    Get-datastore. foreach {($MyDatastore = $_)} | Get - vm | Select-Object @{Name="Datastore";expression={$MyDatastore}},@{Name="CanonicalName";expression={$MyDatastore.extensiondata.info.vmfs.extent.diskname}},Name

  • Possible to deploy the OVF model directly from the local data store?

    Hey all,.

I'm trying to optimize the consumption of resources and the speed of deployment of models of the FVO in ESXi 4.  Of course, the fastest and most effective way to do so would be to have the models of the FVO in a data store and deploy them directly to another (two stores on the same host).  That's what I'm trying to accomplish.

Problem seems to be that when you use the vSphere client to deploy templates of the FVO, even when you point to the URL of the model on the same host (via http to the data store access) system, the vSphere client again retrieves the ESXi host files, then transfer their return.  So using twice the bandwidth on the host and the client system necessary.

Does anyone know if it is possible to perform the deployment of a model of the FVO keeping all internal transfer to the ESXi host?  If anyone knows another method more effective than what I'm trying to achieve, I'm open to suggestions.

    All advice is appreciated.

    Thank you!

    -Ben

The only way I can see that you can keep the internal traffic to the ESX host would be to have the vSphere client in a virtual machine running on the host computer, and configure your internal network Ms keep all traffic to the host

  • Migrated virtual machine appears in the two data stores

    Hi all

A bit of background on our installation first. servers ESX 3.5 vcenter 4.0 (just improved 2.5) + 2 + 2 data warehouses configured in 1 box of MSA.

Here is what happened. I've migrated a VM from A to B data store using "Migrate" in vSphere client on vCenter.

On the vSphere client, virtual machine displays now two data warehouses. In the browser data store, the vme even appears in the two data stores. Datastore shows 20 GB to 20 GB provisioned and 0 GB to 20 GB used. B displays 20 of 20 put into service and used 20 20 GB.

Migration seems to have succeeded. I migrated about 10 other vm and they reside only on a data store. All virtual machines are working properly. I tried to migrate the computer back to A virtual. He showed only a data store. But the problem appeared again when I migrated the vm to B. I tried to move the virtual machine back and forth between servers ESX, no difference.

Any ideas? The virtual machine is working well, and it is not necessarily a critical problem. But it's annoying, because I intend to reorganize the data store has and the fear it could cause a problem.

Thank you so much in advance!

  • Prevent write access to a data store

    All,

I hope someone can advise me on this problem?

    The scenario:

We have introduced a new LUN in our ESX 4.0 cluster, configured as a data store VMFS and storage vmotion to migrate from a number of virtual machines on this data store. Each virtual machine is turned off. Logic unit number is presented an IBM DS8100 storage array. At a specified time, the LUN is migrated to a remote data center, where we intend to present the LUN to a cluster of replacement and saving virtual machines on this LUN. This provides a method of migration of virtual machines between remote sites.

The problem is when we test this guy storage advise that there are tracks out of sync in the replicated data, which they claim is due to the LUN writes during replication (which seems unlikely that all the virtual machines on this LUN were stop). According to me, the question is at the end of storage but have been asked to determine if there is a method to isolate completely the LUN of the cluster ESX source to ensure that no data is written during the migration.

The methods that I have considered are:

    (1) delete the data store - not a viable option that he would destroy all data on the LUN.

    (2) turn off all the paths to the data store by using the vSphere client. It resembled a possibility - I can deactivate 3 of the 4 paths to an ESX host, but get an error when I try to disable the fourth.

    (3) use esxcfg-mpath to disable paths - not convinced that this will work any different use of the GUI.

    (4) get the guys from storage to use to prevent ESX hosts to 'see' the LUN of LUN masking. My problem with this is how ESX will react if she can't see the data store.

My question is, is anyone know of any method I can use to ensure that this LUN cannot be written in during the migration to the remote site?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Martin

Yes, ESX will complain, but once you log LUN return - everything will be ok.

Remove the inventory of VMs (but don't delete disk) before disconnection LUN and ESX will not say anything.

  • ODI file data store

    Hi all

I have a confusion about the physical and logical length in the ODI file data store.

    I have a fixed-width file where a c2 col had datatype as string (30).

I've set this column in the data as string store > physical length 30 > logic length 30

My interface failed with error as '.

    ORA-12899: value too large for column 'S0_IDM '. «C$ _0S0_EAGLE_DWHCDC_CHRG_MST ".» "" "C2_CHARGE_DESC" (real: 31, maximum: 30).

When I increased the logical length to 255, the interface worked fine.

Being always the same 30 physical length.

    How different is it?

Any help on this will be appreciated.

    Thanks and greetings

    Reshma

This isn't the official documentation, but here's my point of view, after a few moments of reflection

Everything you do in the ODI Designer is inspired by the logical architecture. Only when running it manifested in a physical implementation i.e. connection strings are materialized etc. When you perform an integration ODI creates usually a few temporary tables prefixed with C$, I$ etc to be able to perform the necessary data movement and the transformations needed to, for example, to fill a data target (table) store. In your example, your flat file is materialized in such a temporary table before that its content is manipulated (or not) and loaded in the target data store. When ODI generates this code that he uses the logical length emitted in the DDL that generates temporary table column lengths, the physical column is ignored.

Now in your scenario is not a problem as constraints such as these do not matter to the physical file version knowledge if you were to write to the file, that it would not matter if you wrote return 255 characters or 31. This could be a problem if you were using database tables and varying the logical vs physical lengths but generally you reverse engineer tables from database using ODI rather than manually doing so makes better.

Anyway, in short, I think that the logical lengths should be taken as representative which will manifest itself in the materialization of the temporary objects used to manged / transform the data from the source models (tables$ CAN) and target (I have tables$) while the physical lengths indicate what the underlying physical representation of these models are in reality.

EDIT: after reading some logical documentation actually represents the length while physics is related the number of bytes required to store the data. Therefore, you could have a situation with multibyte characters where the physical length could be greater than the logical length but not really the other way around.

  • local storage in the data store

    I have 4 ESXi 5.5 cluster nodes (host1, 2... 5) + 3par storage, I noticed that the local drive of host2 is detected as a data store.

When I create a VM and I choose the data store, I can see all data related to my on3par LUN stores but it seems this drive local host2 too!

I would like to remove it! Can you offer me please?

You must hide hide this data store using permissions, you must run the following procedure: Open-> inventory-> warehouses vSphere-> select the select data-> permissions VMFS store-> click the user or group in the list and set them to 'No access' - are not propagated.
