HP Elitebook 8460p: is my power supply dead/dying?

OK, so for Christmas, I got a HP Elitebook 8460p. Everything was fine, except that on the 3rd day, something terrible happened.

Day 1 (Christmas): the laptop set up, new installation of Windows 7. Minor only freezes occor all seconds for half a second about. "Upgrade Bay" does not work, made just 2 short grinding noises when closed after opening

.

day 2: even freezes. That night, I run a disk check before going to bed. (Don't ask me what are the results, because I fell asleep during the test)

Day 3: incredibly slow Windows now. Starting about 15 minutes, and answers may last from 1 to 5 minutes, never even.

Symptoms: my HARD drive light is constantly on, however I ran many tests my self and even the player was tested for possible errors and he spent everything. Running Windows from a disk external DRIVE is fine and going at normal speed (for an external that is). When I push the switch down to close the laptop, there is a sharp wail (only half a second). My internal battery cool and is holder of a load at normal speed, only when the internal HARD disk needs accesed for anything on any platform, it's very very slow.

What I tried:

Defrag: Windows disk shows the fragmentation of 27%, however any attempt not to defragment that lead to progress stuck at 0% defragmented.

SeaTools: Spent Seatools smart test.

Reseting BIOS: BIOS reset by using the option in the BIOS.

Store testing: took the laptop computer to the store and paid $20 for them to test, it passed all tests.

Auditor of Windows errors: found mistakes (I've marked recovery of bad sectors and fix file system errors) and fixed (I have this on the external HARD drive that was running windows 7).

If this is not the power supply, I have no idea of what is more. Assistance to access the drive HARD internal from the external windows copy is still slow, so there is nothing to do with the problems of corruption or OS driver I know. If you need more technical info let me know. I really don't care about the short freezes more, I just want to be able to use my new laptop if anyone can help me identify the problem I love them. I'm just suspecious of the PSU now because of her crying when being cut.

Well, after reciving absolutely no help on this subject, I finally concluded that my HARD drive is indeed bad. I took it on my laptop, it was hooked up to my office, it's still slow respondent (although a little faster) and the HARD drive is also still on. The only reason why I come back to this post is someone else do it who is having these symptoms:

-HARD disk always turn on.

-HARD drive passes all the tests.

-Great answer/access times (for me, it would take an hour or more just to get windows 7 booted up and logged).

-No real lag, just windows waiting on the HARD drive.

-Crazy waiting for HARD disk defragmentation time (Mine was going to take a week + and there by about 33% fragmentation)

-Small amounts of offset or "stutters / hiccups" than occor all few seconds (about once every 3-4 seconds for me) (this applies only if the HARD drive worked before).

-A small, short, high-pitched shrill when the computer is forcibly stops using the power button.

My HARD drive exposes all of these symptoms. If your HARD drive is having these same questions, sorry to say, but you'll probably have to get a new HARD drive or get an SSD. The good news is that HARD drive prices have fallen since SSD majorly became public.

42 people have seen this post but not one bothered to even try to help. I am very disappointed.

  • The Acer M3641 will have a standard ATX power supply? My power supply is dead.

My M3641 does not start and it seems to be dead while it is turned off.  It was plugged and it started sparking and make loud pop.  I see no signs of a short circuit or damage the inside of the case, but I did not remove or open the power supply.  I think to replace, but I can't find all the information on the sites of Acer which would specify if a standard ATX PSU would work or if there are installation instructions I need.  Does anyone out there know about this?  Thank you.

OK, no answer here yet, so I had to make a decision.  I bought a ThermalTake TR2 430W ATX PSU (also shown on their Web site as W0070) and I replaced the power supply in my M3641.  It cost me $25 (after discount) at a local TigerDirect store (CompUSA was.)  I was shocked (no pun intended) the degree of simplicity to install.  I was also shocked that he seems to have worked immediately.

First I disconnected the power of the unit and press and hold the power on button on the front of the PC (according to the instructions of Acer) to release any remaining electrical load (or so they claim).  I removed the 4 screws of the old PSU and slid the box out of the chassis Assembly while retaining all connected cables.  I found the best direction for the new PSU (fan stood in the same place, so the new power supply heat can be evacuated in the chassis, but the chassis is open enough and if the fan is drawing inside the PSU the air comes from the back of the unit (reasonably fresh air.)  It's the only way it would fit the attachment power cord located on the side of the draw.  The old power supply had the fan and the power cord on the same side attachment to the rear of the chassis).  Note that it is possible that the fan is fan in the power supply and the back.  I do not know.  In any case, I had no choice about the direction.

I unplugged the old PSU connector and replaced it by plugging the connector corresponding since the new power supply.  I did step by step, a connector at the same time, check first to make sure I knew exactly where the connector has been set and what was the orientation.  In each case, I checked to make sure that the paired wire color coding.  In some cases, there was an extra wire on the new connector, but all the others were corresponding to the color and orientation.  I had a square connection 4 pins which does not correspond to the form of any connector again, but the new PSU was a rectangle connector 8 this divide into two 4 pin and I joined an of these.  The main connector has been 24 pins and the new PSU gave me an option of 20 or 24 pins.  Once again, no problem.  I noticed that one of the connections of the old PSU was actually two connections separated on a single cable, so I simply repeated with the new power supply, which included two cables multiconnector just for this purpose.  I used one of those for the two connections (hard disk, I think) and the other for a single connection, probably for the optical drive.

The old power supply was now completely detached.

After checking that all the screws and connectors have been secured, screw the plate chassis and to make sure the PC is properly delivered together, I plugged it in the end of the power cable supplied with the new power supply with the power off PC switch.  Then I plugged the other end of the power cable on my PS backup APC no explosion yet, so I went the new PC button power on / off to we.  Still no spark, so I pressed the button on the front of the PC and voila, it lights up and started.  Everything seems fine.  It seems to work normally.  If I encounter problems such as overheating, I will update this post.

  • Dead power supply HP Pavilion Slimline of s3750t

Dead bought a HP Paviliton Slimline s3750t in February - feeding six weeks later. No lights, no fan, nothing. Spent an hour in line with the HP chat support, who promised to send a replacement within 3-4 business days. Nothing happened, so now I'm on the phone with HP support who spent 20 minutes until now trying to see if there is any record. What is your experience with HP support and the quality of this product. So far, I'm very underwhelmed.

Slimline = BBQ hot box.  Heat is the number one killer of electronics (you don't raise the voltage on board HP).  I saw a certain PSU dead in this forum.  Replacement of power supply cannot last very long if subjected to the same environment.  It's too late to return the PC to get a refund, but you can always migrate electronics to a bigger case and with better ventilation (Antec 300).  The largest case will also allow you to use a more powerful/silent power.  The power supply is around $30 - $40 after rebate.

  • R104 - power supply works, but the dead unit

Hi I have a Readynas 104 about 2 years and it just stopped working and will not. The power supply shows a green light, suggesting it is fine, but the box itself died. Any ideas how to fix this problem or do I get it looked at under warranty? Also I have a thought to replace it with another more powererful Readynas. If I simply move the disks to the new unit will be able to prepare the raid 5 array, I had the installer on the R104 (4 x 3 TB WD) Red readers

Models ending in E are provided with readers of the company and those ending in re is bundled with office records.

  • Power supply for Powermac MDD

    Hey all,.

I got a Powermac MDD dead sitting in my room for a few years now that I picked up for free because it lights. I came to the conclusion that it was the power supply, so I took and threw it years. Now, here I am, no power supply and one useless MDD.

I really want to get this thing to the top and running, but as the price of the power supply on ebay are absolutely ridiculous. I hope that someone here has a job, they are willing to participate with and sell to me. (Pay me for the part + shipping costs). Also interested in an OS disc that will work for the machine, so I can stand him up and running.

If eBay is too pricing heartburn, try a Mac (MUG) user GFroup in your area. This site will help you locate a:

    http://appleusergroupresources.com/find-a-group/

As a general rule, you don't have to physically visit the groups for assistance. Several times, simply by sending an e-mail "looking to buy" published groups addresses will receive a response.

The other option is to look for a private LABEL job and use it for parts. The cost of a scrap computer may be less than the PSU.

  • Compaq Mini 110: Polarity of power supply jack

    Hello

I have a HP/Compaq Mini 110 that was given to me because both the battery and the AC adapter was lost. I have a power supply of the correct voltage (19 VDC) and can get an outlet of the right size. I need to know what the polarity of the plug must be, for example, is the center of the end positive or negative? I also need to know if the computer will be also powered if one battery (even dead) is not installed. If it will power-up with the polarity a/c adapter, I'm going to buy a battery, otherwise I don't lose money. Shame on HP/Compaq to not show a pictorial of polarity on the camera body. If I can get going, have enough moxie upgrade to Windows 10? Thank you.

    Here is the Service Manual:

    Manual

See p. 54 on the hard drive. She straight plug the motherboard, but it shows a cart or make sledding which does not move there and the SSD is welded to a SATA connector. For some time I took one of these apart.

He's a regular SATA and the size limit, it's what is on the market, not the hardware, so you could theoretically install a 2 TB or a 2.5 inch SATA SSD. You could probably get one inch 80 gig SATA SSD 2.5 for a pittance and it would run as well as he is capable of running.

The memory you have is DDR2-800, but the system he clocks up to speed DDR2-533.

The power Jack is soldered to the motherboard and there is no way I know to stretch upward. A lot of youtube videos on the welding on a new jack and you can find the plug for a few dollars. It is not a work that I do, but I saw several times and I think you can probably manage it if you have the soldering equipment.

  • EliteBook 8460p: DisplayPort does not connect

I connected my new HD monitor via the VGA input with no problems.  When I connect the laptop to the monitor using a DisplayPort adapter to DisplayPort cable and the monitor DisplayPort mode no connection is established.  My graphics cards are DameWare Development mirror driver 64 bit and Radeon HD 6470 M.  The monitor is an ASUS VE278Q. Is there a setting on the laptop that I need to activate the DisplayPort?  I guess that the cable connection should be sufficient for the monitor to the laptop.  Any help is very appreciated!

    Hello pmoo,.

I have also an Elitebook 8460p (AMD Radeon HD 6470 M GPU) running Windows 7 (Enterprise), with an external HP 2511 x, LCD and * only * crossed a sceanrio simliar you did: I had problems to get a picture on my monitor when connected with a HDMI cable.

To clarify, I actually use a docking advanced (230W) which has connections 2DVI & 2DisplayPort at the rear; I use one of these DisplayPort connections with a DisplayPort-> HDMI dongle to connect my HDMI cable to the monitor. If you connect directly to DP your laptop, this behavior * should * be the same...

First of all, let me start by how I 'fixed' my question (your mileage may vary):

    1. I still think that it was a timing issue with me: the monitor and the laptop should be ISOLATED. Connect the cables; Turn on the laptop first, but make sure that the lid is CLOSED. THEN turn the monitor on.
    2. Have the most recent drivers can't hurt; Make sure that you install them before connecting the external monitor.
    3. CABLES CABLES CABLES!   Always check the wiring and try another HDMI cable if you have one.
    4. Make sure the connections themselve are nice and safe: in my case, the HDMI connection on the monitor was a bit sloppy (brand new monitor).
    5. And just stick to it... (im also confused as to why it took so long... > I spent 4 or 5 hours until what it worked..).

Now, let me detail that I got here:

My connections: I had my system & monitor off, and after removing my my docking station DVI connector and the monitor, I plugged my DisplayPort dongle to my dockign and plugged the dongle to the monitor using a HDMI cable. I fed my monitor & notebook (with cover open notebook in case I had to update the drivers, activate something, etc.).

Tried to activate the mointor: I right click on the desktop to open the control/display panel / 'Screen Resolution' UI and interpreted by "detect": nothing: he showed the "integrated monitor' for the laptop and a generic monitor, but I don't see my monitor HP 2511. I have done several times, and finally, after some trial and error the right monitor #2 (HP 2511) appeared as a second monitor.

I tried to "Extend desktop" for two monitors; but this only * partially * worked; I could see that the mointor received a signal because she was out of 'sleep' (the power light went from orange to blue (active))... but there is no image on the monitor (!)

I've then updated the software and drivers for my laptop for the latest news from hp.com for laptop (3.20 - 130911 A - 164036 C (20 December 2013):)

Note: "solves a problem where the system does not detect external displays properly when the system is connected to a docking station with 2 attached external displays and the lid is closed the system."

Well, I said: nothing to see new drivers... so I installed them.

However, even after installing the drivers, no. picture on the screen... I saw that it was getting a signal (did not sleep), but does not display anything.

NOTE: I did this with my laptop open cover...

I have so I checked the wiring; Brand new DisplayPort HDMI cable...... quite new dongle so I reversed the HDMI cable, tried another cable...

    Yet, nothing...

    Finally:

    • Back to the 'screen resolution' UI, this time I made sure that the Office was NOT extended to the #2 monitor (external monitor).
    • I have powered off the COAST of the external Mointor (I could here the PnP event for the monitor).
    • I have closed the lid of the laptop.
    • Double check all connections again (and again! they are capricious!).
    • I then On the external Monitor; I heard the PnP event for the monitor... and... PHOTO!  The external mointor now had an image.

I hope this helps... it of just me and not of HP.

    Hello

My power supply died a week ago.  I know because she gave me a code 4 sound.  I followed the troubleshooting instructions, and when it is connected with all the cables disconnected, the fan does not turn.  Thus confirmed dead.

I got the new power supply today, and I plugged it in with no cable attached.  The fan spun.  Power has confirmed the good.

However, when I put back in place and turned on, I got the code of four beeps again.  Does this mean that my motherboard is fried?  And if so, where the Board of Directors is the id so I can order another?  I have the dual core intel cpu if that helps at all.  Not the extreme, just the duo.

Thanks in advance for your help.

After I plugged in a monitor, I doscovered that the computer was in the way of the message and then affected by the thermal shutdown.  Replacement of the entire radiator and fan made me a work computer.

The problem was a bad video card.  For some reason, nor Council picked up the problem.

  • Power supply is turned on, but not fans.

I have a Gateway with Vista Home 5478. My power supply is on, but the vista system will not start. The power light is on, but that's all. I also noticed that all fans, including the fans inside my diet, are dead. I changed power supplies, increased from 400 to 430 watts, and it has not changed a thing. Is this maybe my motherboard?

It looks like a hardware problem.

    Contact Gateway if under warranty.

Not sure if delta would give this info. YMMV.

I think the black is ground and yellow + 12V and green is pson, violet + 5V sb, Grey's PWR.

Maybe it's a GOOD guess, based on the thread colors.

Cut the cable near the power supply would give you something to work with.

However, you are just as likely to blow up everything, if you guess wrong.

Colors are not something that they would waive for manufacturing reasons. So, if you look at this.

    Green is switched on PWR

    Purple is + 5V SBY

    Yellow is + 12V

    Black is GND.

Here's the scenario: we have a workstation Dimension 9200 does not illuminate. We concluded that food was dead. There was no light, no sign of power, then I found a supply of replacement and began to remove the old. I got all the cables connected and removed the screws that hold the power supply up to the posterior end of the case. But now there is something under the power supply on a support. How to get the power supply out of the case?

Thanks in advance for any response.

Its a hook you press while you can drag slightly forward and out.

    1. Remove the cables in the power cable routing clip.
    2. Remove the four screws that attach the power supply to the back of the computer frame.
    3. Press the release button located on the floor of the computer frame.
    4. Slide the power supply approximately 1 inch toward the front of the computer.
    5. Lift the power supply of the computer.
