Increase Lun with different storages

Hello

If I have a bit of space and want to make a lun increase, I use a different number of logical unit to another storage?

My problem: I need to put 400 GB of space for a machine that is located in vm3.5, but it does not see the storage DS4700. If I develop a DS8000 DS4700 lun with the space I can see?

Taking into account that we have a storage medium and high-end, I think that the first is not recommended, until this ok!

Kind regards!

If you have found this information useful, please consider awarding points to 'Correct' or 'Useful'*.

Yes, that is supported. As long as you see a free disk (LUN) you can use it to extend an existing VMFS partition:

http://pubs.VMware.com/vi35/server_config/sc_storage_manage.11.6.html

You should be aware that the loss of a LUN means the entire loss of the data store.

  • ASM diskgroup with different disc size

    Hello

    DB: 10.2.0.4
    Operating system: AIX 5.3 64-bit L

    I have installation on 10g RAC ASM with node 2. It has the only Eve on ASM.

    Total DB size is 250 GB.
    Total size of FRA is 700 GB.

    My FRA diskgroup to archivelog (also holds multiplex controlfile) each size of 50 GB drive. Even if I set the retention period for 1 day, backup to disk, rman getting failed, due to space issues. So I manually delete obsolete data report and rerun backup.

    I want to add the workspace to FRA diskgroup regarding adding disks to FRA diskgroup. But, I have 100 GB drives available , it's not the same waist size of current existing FRA disc (50 GB).

    Here's my question

    (1) that I can Add the size different to the same diskgroup disc ?. If I add, are there performance problems?
    My all data files are out of FRA diskgroup and there are someother diskgroup.

    (2) if FRA diskgroup 50 GB and 100 GB of disks, and then how the archivelog and backup data will be erased?
    Will the data stored up to 50 GB in all disks in FRA, even * 100 GB * disc is?.

    (3) while doing recovery with different size of disk at diskgroup, what kind of problems can I face in performance wise?

    (4) can I remove any diskgroup 50 GB disks and add the 100 GB drive, so that I can increase the size of the disk in the same diskgroup?. I'll remove it and add at the same time.

    (5) add disks redundant external diskgroup , I'm ok with the following query?

    ALTER DISKGROUP FRA add DRIVE ' </dev/rhdsk1 >', </dev/rhdsk2 > ', </dev/rhdsk3 > ';

    Please help me on my doubts above.

    Thank you and best regards,
    Therese

    Hi Sunand,

    (1) can I add different diskgroup disc even size?. If I add, are there performance problems?
    My all data files are out of FRA diskgroup and there are someother diskgroup.

    A minimum of four (Oracle ASM disks) LUNS of equal size and performance is recommended for each disk group

    (2) if FRA diskgroup 50 GB and 100 GB of disks, and then how the archivelog and backup data will be erased?
    Data are saved up to 50 GB in all disks of FRA, same 100 GB drive is it?

    Oracle ASM data distribution policy is based on the ability. Ensure that the Oracle ASM disks in a disk group have the same ability to maintain balance.

    (3) while doing recovery with different size of disk at diskgroup, what kind of problems can I face in performance wise?

    Ensure that all Oracle ASM disks in a disk group have similar performance characteristics and the availability of storage. In configurations of storage with dimmers of mixed speed, for example, 10 K and 15 K rpm, i/o performance is limited by the slow speed control.

    (4) can I remove any diskgroup 50 GB disks and add the 100 GB drive, so that I can increase the size of the disk in the same diskgroup?. I'll remove it and add at the same time.

    Yes. First, you add the 100 GB drive and then remove the drives from 50 GB.

    (5) to add disks to external redundancy diskgroup, I'm ok with the following query?
    ALTER DISKGROUP FRA ADD DRIVE ",", ";

    Redundancy is controlled by the diskgroup. Then simply add the disks.

    e.g ALTER DISKGROUP FRA ADD DISK '/dev/rhdsk1', '/dev/rhdsk2', '/dev/rhdsk3';

  • Commit photos with different data stores

    I have a question of space with one of my servers.  We have a 300 GB LUN with essentially a 300 GB VMDK (for simplicity).  We moved the file access to a data store VMX different with a lot of storage space so that when you take a snapshot he will have space to keep the delta files.  My question though is when he goes to renew their commitment, there will be more space required on the data store where the VMDK or recommit this space will be used on the data store where the VMX file?  I've always heard that instant reengagement essentially requires free space equal the size of instant collective delta files.  Does it matter if the VMDK is thick or thin?  Obviously thin can extend but I mean for snapshots.

    Thank you!

    John

    Therefore the Consolidation assistance snapshot gets created with all other delta files?

    The 'Consolidation' Helper is like another instant and only created if you remove snapshots, while the virtual machine is up and running.

    .. instant .single can only grow to the size of the VMDK (so thin provisioned space) parent...

    That's right, a single snapshot can only grow to the size of the basic disk (more a minor overload, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384), because it contains only modified data blocks and a mapping table.

    Hello

    the problem here is this:

    These attributes of the schema and try again.

    Is it really true that the types of storage should not be mixed? According to the docs, it shouldn't be a problem.

    Everything is fine when the two schemas are registered as the same type of storage.

    Any suggestions that might cause the problem?

    Thank you very much in advance for your help.

    To explain with a simple example, why mixed storage may not work...

    When we record a relational storage schema object, Oracle creates backstage of a set of object types and SQL collection that map XML to SQL data model structure.

    If you understand that it is also easy to understand why your scenario is not supported.

    For example, let's say that this is "schema X":

    Start

    () dbms_xmlschema.registerSchema

    schemaURL-online 'schema - X.xsd'

    schemaDoc =>

    "'http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" >

    '

    local-online true

    genTypes-online true

    );

    end;

    /

    Without annotations of schema, Oracle will create an object SQL like this (generated by the system name) type:

    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE "DEV". ("' CommonType5101_T" AS OBJECT)

    "SYS_XDBPD$" "XDB". "' XDB$ RAW_LIST_T."

    VARCHAR2 (4000 TANK) "item1",.

    'item2' VARCHAR2 (4000 TANK)

    )

    NO FINAL CANNOT BE INSTANTIATED

    /

    Now, let's say this scheme registers Y, which uses the schema X Atapez:

    Start

    () dbms_xmlschema.registerSchema

    schemaURL-online 'schema - Y.xsd'

    schemaDoc =>

    "'http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" >

    '

    local-online true

    genTypes-online true

    );

    end;

    /

    Similarly, Oracle will create another type of SQL object:

    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE 'Root5106_T' AS OBJECT)

    "SYS_XDBPD$" "XDB". "' XDB$ RAW_LIST_T."

    'Content' 'CommonType5101_T '.

    )

    FINAL CANNOT BE INSTANTIATED

    /

    As you can see, the type of 'root' reference the previously created type 'CommonType5101_T' when registering the schema X.

    If the schema X is registered for binary XML, no extra SQL type is created.

    Therefore, when we try to save the scheme there for the object-relational storage, Oracle will try to retrieve the name of the type that 'Content' attribute of the root must be based on, but since this type does not exist, an error is raised.

  • VMotion between 2 Hosts with different processors

    Hallo,

    I have a server in my homelab I use for studies of VMsphere and I want to get a second machine to test advanced features such as HA, Vmotion etc.

    My first server has a map of X9SCM-9 with processor Xeon E3-1230V2 (Ivy Bridge). I am currently running ESX 5.0 U2 on it.

    I was counting on obtaining of material quality for the second host consumers because I don't want to spend a lot on it, so I thought that I need any CPU generation Ivy Bridge.

    I tested today with a second machine with a Pentium G2020 Ivy Bridge, but when I try to Vmotion he says "the virtual machine requires physical features that are not available or disabled on the host... ».

    So I figure there must be a difference in architecture regardless of the CPU beeing an Ivy Bridge CPU.

    When I try to activate CVS it just me are going to the 'Nehalem' Version so my virtual machines running on host 1 would not be able to use all the features of the CPU since the Xeon.

    So the question boils down to: what is the processor less which offer compatibility VCA L5?

    Or is there something else to consider in VMotion between two hosts with different processors?

    I got a shared storage, etc. of the same network configuration.

    Thank you

    Benjamin

    Hi Benjamin,

    For compatibility VCA L5 want to look at one of the following models, Intel CPU:

    • Ivy Bridge: Series E3-1200-v2
    • HASWELL

    I would recommend mental health that before rushing and a CPU purchase, check if a cheaper option would be, as Jon mentions in suppresss some fo the CPU compatibility checks so obviously, this is not desirable in a production environment, and must be applied in your study of VMware Lab to the home address.

    Hope this helps,

  • HP SAS HBAS with IBM Storage and SAS SAN vs iSCSI SAN

    Hello, I am working on a project, and I have to add a SAN solution to my client infaestructure. My client already has a HP Server and we wanted to add another server, but an IBM one. I thought I'd add storage IBM (DS3200) that has two SAS interfaces. The problem is that the Distributor IBM says who does not know if the HP Server will be able to communicate with the SAS IBM storage. So, one possibility was to put on the server HP HP SAS HBA Controller. The second option is to put a SAS HBA Controller IBM. I think that the SAS is a standard, it doesn't matter what brand I use of HBA. Should not it works anyway?

    There is another option which adds instead of SAS one iSCSI storage. The problem is that I do not know the performance than the iSCSI storage. I want to put inside it's VM with Exchange Server (50 mailboxes), an ERP (for 50 users) with it's SQL Server, a computer file virtual, a virtual machine server with Active Directory.

    So, the questions are:

    1 - does anyone have experience with iSCSI storage to see if its performance if goog enough (I intend to use a dedicated to the iSCSI network gigabit switch)?

    2 does anyone know if I use different brands of servers (in this example an IBM and HP) with a SAS storage IBM? Who be it already done? The HP SAS HBA are compatible with the IBM iSCSI storage? IBM SAS HBA are compatible with HP servers?

    3. in the case of being able to do what I say to question 2, that do you suggest? Put a HP SAS HBA within the HP Server or upgrade an IBM SAS HBA inside HP Server?

    Of course the option I want to use is the addition of SAS IBM storage instead of using an iSCSI one, but I'm not sure of their compatibility between HP and IBM storage servers.

    Thanks in advance.

    In this case, the reason why I wouldn't use SAS is that your application requires this level of performance and the cost as not justified. You can configure iSCSI and direct savings in most important features such as snapshot, replication and dedup. If you were available to this solution with the DS3200 spend you 10K and that none of these features. Performance is very good, but you will find that the system is not yet warmed up with this load. The SAS Protocol can support high IO, but is not what provisions IO, is the number of disks and the RAID mode that defines your ability to e/s. I put 40 K terraced small IOPS / s on a single caching of 1 GB iSCSI target, so he can make the e/s. flow is not as high , but do you really need it. In the future you can profitable move to 10Gbe if you find insufficient bandwidth, which would be faster than the SAS 3 GB limit that is uneconomic to upgrade 3 + times.

    Kind regards

  • ESX host with local storage recommended for the host partition table?

    Hi all

    I know that the best practical partition table should look like this:

    Mount Point

    / dev/sda (primary)

    / Boot

    Pre-configured

    However with a system with local storage would you set it up the same way, and whatever it is must be amended to change to get ESX to write log files to the different partitions?  I would like to configure it for future expansion for when the enterprise package is configured.

    Yes, I would set up the same way with an ESX with local storage server and nothing needs to be changed for the vmekernel right at the partition/var - unless of course you want to write to a log server that you need to change a configuration file to point to the server logs.  If you talk to the ESX Enterprise license you willnot have to change partiition table-

    Also on something else if you don't have a SAN/NAS storage you will also need to create a VMFS partition on the local data store to host your virtual machines

    Hi tables with LOB, etc. mandatory partitioned tables requires the same space of tables in the destination database.
    so maybe in your case it happened. General tables will always get import without fail.

  • Photos with different apple id: s

    Any way to sort photos taken with various apple id: s in photos for mac? I have three different iPhones that has been moved from parents to children. Is there anyway to sort images with different apple id: s? I heard that there is way to sort different (smart folder) with the model of phone, but this is not enough cause phones were used earlier by the parents. And I want to use only a single library of pictures, so the different IDs: s for mac is not the solution. It would be nice to get this functionality.

    You can use smart albums with a combination of constraints: the model of the iPhone and the date rank when the iPhone has been used by a person in particular. If the iPhone has been in use you make in the years 2012 and 2013 creates a smart album that will check for the ipHone and the date range.  Then announces a keyword "Photo by Me" of all the photos in this album. Do the same for the other ranges of iPhones and date and assign the photographer as a key word.

    If you keep marking new imports with a keyword of photographer then you can create smart albums for every photographer.
