Installation on external drive

I have CS5 installed on my iMac and need to install it on an external drive so I can take it with me to a workshop where I use my MacBookAir.  I can't change the destination on the installation of //applications to proceed with the installation.  Any suggestions?

Don't even bother. Adobe apps are not "portable" - just plug in an external drive with the apps on it will do nothing. They must be properly installed on all systems, that they will be used, which could include external drives of course, but things like the licensing system or some shared components will be always installed in system folders, or else they may not work correctly. To cut a long story short: simply install the apps properly on your MBA and use activation 2nd on them.

  • Install Windows 8 on external drive Thunderbolt - Windows could not prepare the computer to begin the next phase of installation

    Hi all

I'm at my wit's end trying to install windows 8. Let me start at the beginning: I used to have windows running on my Mac Pro ssd internal 8.1, installed via bootcamp. It worked well for a while, and then refused to start, gives me a blue screen KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE. Despite some advice from lonely T, I was unable to fix and ended up wiping the partition and relocation, again via bootcamp. Yet once again, it worked for a few months, then the same problem. I made this one last time, and it only lasted 2 days... So I gave bootcamp.

I think that the hybrid MBR partition scheme that implements bootcamp is the culprit, but I don't really have evidence to substantiate this claim. In any case, I tried to install windows in EFI mode. (If I understand correctly, the hybrid MBR is set up to allow windows to install in legacy BIOS mode, but that windows 8 may now install efi, which supports my Mac Pro mode.) My Mac is the new Mac Pro (end of 2013, trash in shape), and I can say short UEFI 2.0 (I have the latest efi update from apple installed).

    The method I'm trying:

    1. create a new partition in HFS + on my external drive using disk utility. The drive has now it's efi partition and partition empty 750Go I want to install windows a 1.25 TB storage partition that I use with my mac. It has a GPT. I formatted HFS + and no FAT, because I think that disk utility creates the same hybrid-MBR as training camp every time a FAT partition is created.

    2. use gdisk to confirm that the disc does not have a hybrid-MBR. (sudo/dev/disk1 gdisk watch MBR: protection)

3 restart my mac and hold the possibility to put in place to bring up the boot efi menu.

    4. Select the EFI_Boot DVD icon (that's the windows 8 install dvd that I have in my superdrive USB drive)

    5. go in the menus of the disk selection screen installation and delete the partition in HFS +, I created to install windows on (the format option is not available)

    6. now select "Unallocated space" on the good drive and click Next.

    The problem:

Partitioning seems to go ok (there is no feedback on this basis, but it proceeds to the next screen, and all new partitions expected are there if I check diskutil list later). He said it is "copy of windows files", but then stops with the error "Windows has no prepare the computer to start the next phase of the installation." To install Windows, restart the installation. "If I restart, I can start the same process all over again and get the same result.

    The Question:

How I get this error and get windows install?

    Extra pieces:

    • The first time it happened I assumed it was the new sip / thing "without roots" in El Capitan, causing problems, then I disabled, but I still get the same error.
    • After reviewing the diskutil list output after one of installs it without success, I found that a labeled EFI partition has been created after my storage partition (the original efi partition was still there in the upper part of the disc).
    • I have windows 8.1 installed now bootcamp on my internal ssd. It was planned to use it and winToUSB to put windows on my crush, but I found that it only works with usb2. I do not have installed could cause problems with the installation on another disk.
    • Before say you I can't run windows on an external, yes you can, and many people have. I read windows sees thunderbolt internal disks.
    • I read a few other posts on this and other sites on this problem, but could not find a pertitnant solution to my situation. I found one that suggested to remove the efi on my disk partition, but that seemed like a bad idea, so I didn't try.
    • I write this at 1 in the morning after a day spent in front of the computer trying to get this working, so please excuse typos typing or other. I am pleased to provide you with any pertinant information helping you will help me.
    • Thank you!

The other thing I tried also almost succeeded:

Although I prefer to get the method above works, because it seems the most promising, is something else, I've tried that I thought worth mentioning. If you offer advice pertaining to this method rather than the above, I would appreciate it if you could explicitly declare that at the top of your answer. Thank you.

I tried to install windows on the physical disk using vmware and virtual box. The instrutctions I followed for this can be found here: http://www.andrewsavory.com/blog/2011/2156 (the only thing different, it's because it's on an external drive, I created the Fat 32 partition manually using disk utility). The first time (using vmware) installation seems to go off without a hitch, but I couldn't get my computer to see the windows partition as bootable with the boot efi menu hold-option regular refined or with system preferences-> startup disk. I think that I was using always inadvertently a hybrid-MBR at this stage. I tried to repeat this new beginning with the first two steps above to avoid the hybrid-MBR. But now when I try to create the virtual machine based on the gross vmdk, it starts to copy the files then says not sufficient permissions and fails. I don't know if it's a permission with the disk or the hard problem. I tried chmod 777 and chown $USER of the vmdk disk (/ dev/disk1s3) does not.

Wow, that was a long post...

    1. when a second drive is detected by the Windows Setup program, he wants to create his own brand of EFI (104 MB) and not to mess with the Mac EFI (200 MB). You can force it to use the EFI to the Mac using Diskpart commands.

2 instead of HFS/FAT32, create a piece of 750 GB free space and it should only get a new MSR/MSD, without the part of EFI.

    3. on your VM method, the link you have is quite old. You have a MP 2013, with references to the 2010 Mac alumni and is a bit too archaic to be useful. http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/install-a-Windows-7-partition-on-Mac-OSX-Wit hout-optical-car-or - usb.1836959 / #post... seems to work for many and can be useful for a test. • New installs on Windows 8.1 and file transfer from an external drive, saved from death PC Vista machine

Hi, my old under Vista Home Premium (32 bit) desktop PC is dead and has been replaced by a new machine Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

I took the hard drive from my old PC and put it in an envelope and the files seem to be fine. I need advice on how to do the following things 4:

    (1) how to find and transfer of e-mail, including records and contacts (I used the e-mail program provided Vista on the old machine) on the new machine and I can't actually set up mail on the new machine to my ISP (BT Yahoo) first (I didn't click on the mail app yet).

    (2) how to find and transfer bookmarks/favorites of Chrome and the old disk to ie11 and/or Chrome structure on the new machine.

    (3) how do I transfer files (photos, music, documents, etc.) so that they are available for all users

    (4) I installed iTunes on the new PC, I want to transfer music files and album cover (I don't know how the album covers are found, and some are "home made" to cover the chronological collections of singles) from the old machine in the easiest way possible

Thank you for all the tips and advice.

Hi Tovoyer, I'll try to answer your questions in order.

    1. Transfer old contacts and emails in Windows Vista Mail

      • First of all, you know that Windows Vista was the latest OS to come with a desktop e-mail program.  Windows 7 and 8 do not come with any successor to the Windows Vista Mail program.  Instead, you can get it as a download in the Windows Essentials page option.  Windows 8 has a rudimentary base e-mail app, but it is designed for the Tablet/phones and the lamp.  If you want something that compares to Vista mail program, you'll want to get the free download of the essential elements in this link before you move forward.
      • After you have installed most of Windows, you can open the program (so renamed "Windows Live Mail" and add your ISP e-mail account.)  This will download depending on how your ISP provides email, all or part of your story by e-mail in the new programme, possibly negating the need to transfer anything from your old installation.
      • If you do not need to transfer your old files, navigate to the file / import Messages option in the Windows Live Mail program.  Choose "Windows Mail" in the list, and then navigate to this folder on your external hard drive attached:

        D:\Users\(your user name) \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local records
(replace D with the drive letter for your hard disk enclosure, of course).

      • To transfer your Contacts is even easier. The Vista mail program did not contact directly, it stores everything in this folder

        D:\Users\(your username) \Contacts

The file present in Windows 8, you can simply copy (or drag-and - drop) your contacts from the external drive on your drive of Windows 8 (C:\Users\(your name) \Contacts) and it will be flawless.

    2. Transfer of Chrome Favorites
      1. If you signed in using your Google account chrome, all of your favorites are stored in Google account, ready to be restored without effort.  Just to download Chrome again, go to the Tools menu and connect you and your bookmarks should appear.

If you do not use the Google account or had the sync disabled, you can still find your bookmarks.  After installing Chrome on your new PC, find the old bookmarks on the external hard drive file here:

        D:\Users\(your Name) \appdata\local\google\chrome\User Data\Default\Bookmarks
(Note the bookmarks is a file, not a folder, but has no file extension).

And put it in the same folder on your installation of Windows 8.

    3. Transfer of Documents and Photos/etc and put at the disposal of all users

Simply drag - move the files in the folder "Public" user on Windows 8.  These files are shared by all users.

    C:\Users\Public (\documents \pictures, \videos \music, etc...)

  • You can simply drag the folder iTunes from the old drive to the same place in the drive of new (music folder of your user account).

  • Installation internal SSD drive and storage of documents on external hard drive

    Hello!

I have an older iMac and I want to speed it up by installing a SSD drive.  Currently, my internal hard drive has 2 TB of storage, and I don't want to pay for one SSD of this size.  I consider the use of an external drive for my files and using the SSD internal applications and the operating system.  Can this work?  What is the internal SSD of minimum size I should get, more or less, according to my number of apps?   The documents will open at a decent speed?   It is up to me to use an external hard drive with a Firewire instead of USB connection?  Thank you!

    Hi Dan:

Apps it really depends how much you use and what types of data you want to keep in vs SSD HARD drive.

120-128 GB SSD: USD price: 60-70 price range.

for 250/256 GB SSD: about USD: price range of 80-90

for 500/512 GB SSD: about USD: price range of 130-150

An external 2 TB drive: for laptop (USB bus-powered - usually 2.5 "HDD included): 90 us $, for the largest 3.5" Office style HDD: 90 USD

    For me:

I store all my music on the external network drive (RAID 1 configuration, 2 TB, and 50 percent full this time), all my documents/pictures are still in my 500 GB SSD.

I don't have much video projects on my SSD.

I used about 200 GB in my internal SSD flash drive

Good luck finding your best solution.

  • Should I unplug external drives during the upgrade?

Contemplating upgrading to El Capitan.  I have an iMac end of 2014, so I know that it is correct.  My question is - should I disconnect all external drives and devices before you run the upgrade, or it doesn't matter?

I remember too, when I updated before, the new operating system does recognize the Time Machine backups.  Should I do to be able to access the TM of the previous operating system?

    Thank you

    Barbara

It can't hurt to unplug external drives.

Time Machine should recognize the previous backups. Which means, you should be able to go back to the backups made since previous versions of OS X. I know when I upgraded from 10.10.5 to 10.11.3, I could see/restore back ups in 10.10.5.

Another thing to consider is once the Installer OS X El Capitan.app file is downloaded and before you click continue to install, copy this file from / applications to another folder (for example, downloads) so that you have it if you need it in the future. Download time records.

  • With the help of El Capitan iMac 27 "to install 10.5.8 on an external drive

I have a 27 "iMac Intel i7 El Capitan running. I also have a still-good G5 that I use every day. I want to (re) install 10.5.8 on the G5, because he had a hardware failure and start the system has failed. I removed the hard drive to start the G5 chassis, put it in an external hard drive enclosure and that connected to the iMac. Disk utility indicates that the drive is OK. The idea was to make the external start G5 drive temporarily, install the OS then remove the external hard drive chassis and put it back into the chassis of the G5. USB external hard drive boot G5 drive is loaded right now is, I don't have the installation provided with my G5 discs.

I have a 10.5.8 install image I d / Apple editing, but when I run it, he said "this software requires Mac OS X 10.5 to install.

How can I convince the i7 iMac install 10.5.8 on this external drive?

You need a compatible installation DVD to perform the installation on the G5 and connect the drive to the computer internally or through FireWire.

I install most of my applications on an external drive of compartmentalized. (ie. not on disk internal C:\.)   I recently started having problems with applications that have been updated to a version/version 2011.  A single application for the preparation of tax returns, cannot print a full return, but it will print the individual & related forms within the tax return.  Another application cannot update a file of historical monetary values.  These seem to be the only problems.  All the features that I usually use in applications appear to be correct and compatible with the earlier versions.

The answer I get from online support for these applications, is that they assume that the applications are installed on the C:\ drive and they solve the problems they are settled elsewhere.  I ran these applications for several years, installed on the external hard drive, no problem.  However when I run now even versions of previous years, I met these same problems.  Applications, freeze, crash, etc.  It can be concluded that it is linked to an update for Windows - rather than applications. · Have what measures you taken to back up programs?

    · You save the settings of the program or programs?

    · Format the hard drive before installing the operating system are you running?

You can copy the settings program and data from the external hard drive on the hard disk.

  • Cannot rename personal folders on external drive

I have an external drive WD Passport that I keep my personal files. After having a virus deleted, I find that I can not rename one of my files due to the read-only attribute being degraded.  I am running Windows XP Home Edition.  I tried to restart in Mode safe and by changing the attributes it - didn't work.  I tried to change the attributes by using the command prompt - did not work.  I need to get this shady read-only out of my files so they can be renamed.  Any ideas?

I'm sorry that apparently you won't believe me - or Microsoft.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/326549

Other things to try/test. I don't know if you have tried these things or not.

    1. are you able to rename the files/folders on a drive different from the system external hard? If not, then maybe some infection had damaged you Windows files. If this is the case, then you can try the (sfc/scannow) System File Checker or a repair installation, or do a clean installation of Windows. There is no way for me to know the exact state of your computer from here, or what would be best for you to do.

    2. can you rename the files/folders on the hard disc of origin if it is attached to another computer? If Yes, the problem points to your original operating system is damaged by the virus. If not, then the virus probably damaged files on the external hard drive. It is not uncommon, especially if you have been infected by a kind of ransomware. Again, I have no way of knowing that you have been infected.

    3. If you can rename the files/folders on a different hard disk, you can also try to move the data off the external problem, formatting and see if you can rename the files now.

And that's all I have. Good luck in your efforts. I have nothing else to add about this.

If you are not able to format the drive, there may be a hardware problem.

  • How to stop Windows Update by creating temporary files on my external drives?

Any ideas on how to tell Windows Update to stay away from my external drives?

I have several external drives I use for backup projects, archives and collections of major media. They are connected to my laptop very irregularly and rarely more than a few hours. In recent years they have been inundated with folders with long as names d84fa74b9585277339 as the seams related to Windows Update. I think it has already started on the laptop with XP I had before this one. Sometimes I see these files on the internal hard disk, but there are theyalways disappear after some time. On external drives, I have to delete manually. On an NTFS disk partition I use for backup, it's not easy, sometimes I have to take ownership of the folder. Drives FAT32 / exFAT is easy.

I guess people who have developed Windows Update realized that you can not trust USB or eSATA connected drives to be there when the cleaning is executed (BTW when cleanup runs it?). So I must have screwed up a setting somewhere. And I have to be very consistent in this because the same thing happens with friends and relatives, I contributed to the installation of Windows 7...
