New installs on Windows 8.1 and file transfer from an external drive, saved from death PC Vista machine
Hi, my old under Vista Home Premium (32 bit) desktop PC is dead and has been replaced by a new machine Windows 8.1 (64-bit).
I took the hard drive from my old PC and put it in an envelope and the files seem to be fine. I need advice on how to do the following things 4:
(1) how to find and transfer of e-mail, including records and contacts (I used the e-mail program provided Vista on the old machine) on the new machine and I can't actually set up mail on the new machine to my ISP (BT Yahoo) first (I didn't click on the mail app yet).
(2) how to find and transfer bookmarks/favorites of Chrome and the old disk to ie11 and/or Chrome structure on the new machine.
(3) how do I transfer files (photos, music, documents, etc.) so that they are available for all users
(4) I installed iTunes on the new PC, I want to transfer music files and album cover (I don't know how the album covers are found, and some are "home made" to cover the chronological collections of singles) from the old machine in the easiest way possible
Thank you for all the tips and advice.
Hi Tovoyer, I'll try to answer your questions in order.
- Transfer old contacts and emails in Windows Vista Mail
- First of all, you know that Windows Vista was the latest OS to come with a desktop e-mail program. Windows 7 and 8 do not come with any successor to the Windows Vista Mail program. Instead, you can get it as a download in the Windows Essentials page option. Windows 8 has a rudimentary base e-mail app, but it is designed for the Tablet/phones and the lamp. If you want something that compares to Vista mail program, you'll want to get the free download of the essential elements in this link before you move forward.
- After you have installed most of Windows, you can open the program (so renamed "Windows Live Mail" and add your ISP e-mail account.) This will download depending on how your ISP provides email, all or part of your story by e-mail in the new programme, possibly negating the need to transfer anything from your old installation.
- If you do not need to transfer your old files, navigate to the file / import Messages option in the Windows Live Mail program. Choose "Windows Mail" in the list, and then navigate to this folder on your external hard drive attached:
D:\Users\(your user name) \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local records
(replace D with the drive letter for your hard disk enclosure, of course). - To transfer your Contacts is even easier. The Vista mail program did not contact directly, it stores everything in this folder
D:\Users\(your username) \Contacts
The file present in Windows 8, you can simply copy (or drag-and - drop) your contacts from the external drive on your drive of Windows 8 (C:\Users\(your name) \Contacts) and it will be flawless.
- Transfer of Chrome Favorites
- If you signed in using your Google account chrome, all of your favorites are stored in Google account, ready to be restored without effort. Just to download Chrome again, go to the Tools menu and connect you and your bookmarks should appear.
If you do not use the Google account or had the sync disabled, you can still find your bookmarks. After installing Chrome on your new PC, find the old bookmarks on the external hard drive file here:
D:\Users\(your Name) \appdata\local\google\chrome\User Data\Default\Bookmarks
(Note the bookmarks is a file, not a folder, but has no file extension). And put it in the same folder on your installation of Windows 8.
- If you signed in using your Google account chrome, all of your favorites are stored in Google account, ready to be restored without effort. Just to download Chrome again, go to the Tools menu and connect you and your bookmarks should appear.
- Transfer of Documents and Photos/etc and put at the disposal of all users
Simply drag - move the files in the folder "Public" user on Windows 8. These files are shared by all users.
C:\Users\Public (\documents \pictures, \videos \music, etc...)

New installation of Windows 7 will not identify the second internal hard drive
Attempted recently to upgrade a computer running the SP3 of XP to Windows 7. Bought the new FULL version of 7.
Have two 1 t Seagate Barracuda SATA drives on board; Operating system in partition 1 of disk C:. second disc to store data only.Several unsuccessful attempts to install 7, but with helpful suggestions, others on this forum, (i.e., update of the BIOS, re-formatting drive C to do a clean install, etc.) finally managed to a successful installation.
All right, except that it does not find my second hard drive. I have the disks attached ports SATA 1 & 2, but the system reads them so much as the C: drive. The second disc appears in the BIOS Setup and Explorer as just the C: drive.
Tried to change the SATA port for second drive to 3 and 4 with the same result. It always appears as the C: drive.
How can I get the systΦme can recognize the drive, so it can be assigned to a drive letter and I can access? I suspect that the reformatting of the first disc for installation probably erased some boot sector/configuration info.
A side issue: before attempting to upgrade to XP, I backed up my "Documents and Settings" on an external drive. Now that XP is passed to the computer, can I continue to use Windows Easy Transfer to retrieve all my settings and info from the program, or who's going to screw me up?
Check if the hard drive is assigned to a drive letter in disk management.
Click Start, right click on computer
Click on management of
Expand disk management
Select your external hard drive if its posted here
Make a right click paths and change drive letter
Restart your computer, open the computer in the start menu and see if it shows then.

Original title: connect Windows 7 to the output of user profiles?
I want to reinstall Windows
My user profiles are on a separate HARD diskIs it possible to connect the new install of Win 7 to these existing profilesOr I'll create all new profiles and just move all the files manually? You can change the registry so that it points to your old profile folder. However, I suspect that this would cause problems because the SID and many registry keys would be incorrect for the current installation. I would like to move the folders manually.

I have a laptop HP Envy M6 and it came with Windows pre-installed on it 8.1. I always do a new installation of Windows, whenever I have buy a laptop that I hate all the bloatware and stuff which they pre-install on it.
Unfortunately, when I did, I found that the drivers on the HP website do not work for some things, especially my wi - fi.
In Device Manager there are three things that make their appearance as having a problem:
Network controller:
PCI\VEN_168C & DEV_0036 & SUBSYS_217F103C & REV_01
Unknown device:
ACPI\VEN_HPQ & DEV_6001
Unknown device:
ACPI\VEN_HPQ & DEV_6007
If anyone can provide me with some drivers work, I would be incredibly grateful. I called HP and they told me all I can do is to pay $40 for a CD delivered to me so I can reinstall the version of bloatware, and I really want to do. I want to use my real version of Windows 8 and not pay for something I don't even want.
Thank you!
Nevermind, I fixed it myself by reading old son of Paul_Tikkanen
I used http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php
and found the diver that I needed, and now I don't have to pay $40 for the version of bloatware. Yay!
Thank you Paul!

New installation of Windows XP does not - UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
I'm trying to do a fresh install of Windows XP.
Soyo SY - P41 845PE Lite MB
Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz
1.5 GB of RamThis is a computer that I use every day and who usually has a hard drive with WindowsXP SP3. I just want to have a spare hard drive with a new installation of Windows XP on it.
But installation can not. Usually to auto restart after step 'Copy files' of the installation process. The Windows splash screen appears briefly, and then blue screen message, "a problem has been detected and Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer. UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"followed a few Advisory paragraph which does not apply because the operating system is not yet loaded, then:" technical information: * STOP: (0x8951c900) 0xc0000185 0x00000000 0x00000000. "
Once he got as far as the Windows Installer screen (one who tells me it will take 39 minutes down left) then a box seemed to read: "Fatal Error. An error was encountered which prevents the installation to continue. Installation failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The Setup logs files should contain more information. "Read the Setup log file:" error: the signature for the installation of Windows XP Professional is not valid. " The error code is 80096001. An error occurred during trust verification. »
Another time, after you press enter in the "WindowsXP installation on the selected element", I INSTANTLY got a screen which read; «An error has occurred during installation has been updated of the partition information on 152626 MB disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR].» Setup cannot continue. »
Things, that I already tried that did not work:
Using two different Windows XP Professional installation disks.
Withdrawal and tries to install with different RAM sticks in place.
Two IDE 40 son different cables, which work fine on this computer.
Two different Western Digital disks hard two test without error using the WD diagnostic utility.
My knowledge is limited, but that seems to leave only a bad card mother, right? However, as I say, the computer works well with this old install Windows XP on it. He simply refuses to let me do a new installation on another hard drive.
What other steps can I take to get a new installation on a hard drive with this computer?
Thanks to each of you for your attention to my problem.
I spent $4 on a 80 wire cable IDE (to replace the 40-wire cable I used) and I was finally able to get Windows XP installed today.
Because I had done installations in the past with the 40 wire cable, I don't understand why it didn't work anymore. I guess the age of the cable, but I actually had multiple failures with a whole new thread 40 I had just bought. A mystery, but at least I now have a new facility and I am inclined to believe the 80 wire will make for a faster computer.

I am trying to solve a problem that will probably require a new installation of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The grace period ends in 3 days, and the next 30 days are final exams at the College. I have 2 licenses (and product key) of Windows 7 Pro, but my drive HARD goes wrong and I don't want to use MAK activation. I will be eventually to replace the disk, but is now bad timing.
If a reinstall is needed, I was going to ask if anyone knows how to set the strategy of perhaps a GPO where Windows is updated automatically in the background and after installing updates, 45 or 60 minutes, then restart. The goal would be to have a computer fully patched when I wake up in the morning.
This is my plan:
Install Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit > Windows automatically updated and plug the Ethernet cable > define a GPO where the computer waiting for 45 to 60 minutes after installation of updates (so the msi may end in the background, and I do not interrupt the installation) > the PC will restart > more update swill be downloaded and installed > wait due to the policy of GPO before reboot > Reboot > do it until it's over. > wake up with a PC fully patched 7-9 hours later.
Is this a workable plan?, and if so, how do I define policies such as delay restarting, etc. to achieve?
The reset did not work. It would be a simple solution. I have a valid license, but I don't want to replace the HARD drive until after final exams are over, so I'll reinstall and activate. I try to achieve in the next 24 hours, so it doesn't keep me from my school work. I must also support and will then replace my files.
Feel free to advanced used terminology. I have some experience.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Another question: should I install a security suite before all updates being installed more than 12 hours, or wait until later? What is the level of risk?
Anyone used Ninite to automate the installation of other programs? Is how safe it?
Thank you!
You will have to go on Support of Windows 7 forums on the following link to help solve your problem: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/category/w7itpro/

5.0.3 new installation of Windows 7 x 64 black massive flicker!
New MacBook Air on OS X with Intel HD 10.8.4 5000. Installed VMWare Fusion 5.0.3 and import a virtual machine since version 3.1. Install a new copy of Windows 7 x 64 as from a physical device. Here's a video (attached) of what the screen whenever the mouse passes over the top of the VMWare window, with the old and new installations of Windows. Note that it is not a problem when VMWare is not the active window, and the flicker follows the mouse vertically.
So far, we have tried
- Disabling 3D acceleration
- change the mouse pointer
- VMWare running in troubleshooting mode
- VMWare update
- relocation of the VMWare Tools
- check Windows Update for a new video driver
- VMWare running with compatibility of version 3
Found the solution in this thread: scrapie form with merger 5.0.3 on no later than 2013 (Haswell) MacBook Air
Must manually edit the .vmx file and add the line mks.vsync = "1" "

New installation on windows 7 pro 64-bit sees not connected wired Officejet 6500 E710a-f
Hello!
New installation of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on a gigahertz 3.40 AMD Phenom II X 4 965 with 8 GB of ram. Printer drivers worked on the same bench while he was running as Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.
After only install FF, AVG, and Acrobat (almost a clean install), downloaded the software HP Officejet full feature and pilot 2012-10-22, Version: 116,98, 28.8 M - OJ6500_E710n - z_1315.exe and tried to install the Officejet 6500 E710a f.The printer has a manually set static IP and can be ping from the host. Clean Windows Firewall is disabled and stopped.
The web interface using the IP address of the printer comes with all the features works on FF.
Network status shows connected with IP address, hostname and Mac.However, when installing the network audit is no ethernet connection. Even manually enter his public static IP address or hostname does not solve the problem.
Try the USB, the same question option. I see in Device Manager under other devices HPOfficejet 6500 and 6500 HPOfficejet - Fax with a blue questionmark.
(In the same "other devices" there are 2 Officejet 6500 with a yellow exclamation point - probably from failed network installation). In the printers and devices window, the 6500 is displayed with the correct thumbnail, but with a yellow exclamation point icon. Law and by selecting the convenience store, Windows comes up with the message that no driver is installed and offers a solution. The correction ends with the error that no drivers not found for the FAX. Re-apply the patch never finds the driver.
Anyone who has met something similar (and a solution)?
Thanks for any help!
Jack
After trying to do an install clean-install of 100% and once again, the driver software could not find the printer name or IP address.
Back at each stage, I noticed that I was not using the correct driver! For some reason I D/L the pilot E710n which is for HP Officejet 6500 a Plus e-All-in-One.
Whatever the difference, when installing the E710n for the model does not detect the printer, or via USB or Ethernet.
After you download the right driver for the E710a - f HP Officejet 6500 a e-All-in-One Printer (OJ6500_E710a - f_1315.exe) installation perfectly finished in a few minutes and everything goes well...You would think, base or USB connectivity network should not be dependent on the specific differences sub-model. I was expecting that a bad driver interrogate the device after finding its IP address and display an error message with useful text.

How to perform a new installation of window 8.1?
Hello
(If this is important), I use an Alienware X 51 R2 with the following specifications:
Intel i5 4440U 3.3 GHz processor
AMD R9 270 2 GB
8 GB RAM
1 TB HARD DRIVE
Basically, my alienware has had many recent accidents before I made my own window installation 8.1 via the USB port. I thought it will run more fast and smoother after I have done, but here are a few problems:
1 secure Boot product still "no error of Boot Drives Found" as soon as I turn on the computer. So I have to disable Secure Boot.
2 application opening time is still as slow as before the clean install (i.e. Chrome)
So, is there a procedure step by step on how to perform a new installation of window 8.1? I want this PC to match at the beginning when I first bought.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Tin
You must prepare installation media is to present FAT32 the GPT partition scheme and parameters of the UEFI BIOS with secureboot. See here for more details:
You can perform additional steps to clean your drive before installing Windows:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/cleaning-up-a-drive-format-vs-secure-wipe-SSD-and-HDD/
For complete instructions, see here:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/a-clean-install-of-Windows/a-clean-install-of-Windows-8-1/
Note You may want to complete execution F12 diagnostic tests to verify the correct materials:

If you want to speed up your system to get rid of the mechanical HARD drive and replace it with an SSD for example the 250-500 GB MX200 Crucial:

I get a new hard Hard Drive (SSD). The new disc is the same size as my existing SATA drive. I can do either a new
the installation of Windows 7 or a clone old hard drive? I would prefer to clone the old hard drive and keep all my settings, etc. It's empirical data on the performance difference between a new installation of Windows 7 or to continue with the Windows 7 which was 3 or 4 years ago.
I know the conventional wisdom is that the new installation is faster, but, no matter who actually tested and compared the differences? I know I'll get better performance of the SSD the SATA drive, but I don't know if it's worth the hassle to do a fresh install and redo all my programs and settings.
Others that the performance of the SSD you should not see any differences. If you do, you can always do a clean installation later.

My new installation of Windows 7 randomly freezes, the screen goes black and says "no signal".
I can't turn off my computer except by disconnecting it., which means that the power button does nothing.I did a clean reboot with all the MS drivers without disabilities and she always does, so it is not a software conflict according to Ms.I am quite at a loss of what to do now; self-help told to ask here.I see a lot of complaints of this nature but no resolution. Very frustrated. Can someone please?Right now I have disabled all features of sleep on hard disks and screens and power. Also, I took leave fan I added via a double fan--> cord a brooch that I just bought. So far he collapsed again and it's good at the time, I started to wait for an accident. I will continue for a few days like that and then if all goes well, I will add back the fan see what's happening, and then after that undo the change of parameters of power, I did.
