  subject is fairly free but explanatory thought I'd check here.
  To sum up: off my laptop, one night, no previous problems. To turn on the next mornign and nothing on the screen, can just about making a light screen image, but not enough to see pointer etc.

  Quick search on google shows backlight or inverter. Repair shop, said ups but you want £300 to fix. Someone else has had this problem and it was repaired. Seems a little hard knowing that I can get the part for less than £50.

  Is there an accurate way to know if i's the inverter or backlight?

  In my opinion, your settings on the laptop are right but please check your TV also. I put t know if your TV is a S-video port or you use a S-video adapter. Please check menu TV. Maybe it's for S-video option in the port.

  If the TV doesn't have a S-video port, you can connect your unit as follows:

  If you use an adapter SCART, check that the S-VIDEO on your TV signal is connected, indeed, internally, to the adapter SCART to the TV.

  PowerManagement is weaker and less stable features on any laptop. (especially with the defective batteries).
  NEVER try to count on the home screen etc. It will work time 999 and 1000 it don't.
  Now, you're done with a laptop computer hanging.
  The ways:
  1. the easy way:
  -push the power button and keep your finger on it for 10 seconds. (5 is enough, 10 to be sure)
  -remove the battery
  -plugin powercable
  -push the powerbutton

  2. the less gentle way:
  -remove the power cable
  -Remove the battery
  -wait 24 hours
  -Insert the power cable
  -push the power button

  3. the hard way: make sure THAT YOUR HARD DISK IS NOT PASSWORD PROTECTED, to OTHER YOU LOOSE YOUR DATA.
  trying to understand hat is the startup key sequence to reset the BIOS at startup. (it should be described in your manual somewhere)

  4. the hardest way:! ONLY BY A PROFESSIONAL!
  IF MAKE SURE THAT YOUR DISK IS NOT PROTECTED BY WORD, OTHERWISE YOU LOSE YOUR DATA.
  The laptop must be open and all batteries must be removed. All the capacitors must be emptied (leaving a laptop without the battery for 72 h). Then turn on
  the laptop.

  I took my Satellite L10 part to swap on the plastic dessu for a damaged joint.
  Now is superb, but something was wrong as the screen is not be enlightened now.

  Anyone have any suggestions what else could be?

  If I look at the screen to light, I can see the desktop, I bought a new UPS thinking that was the problem but it has not fixed it :(

  Maybe a second faulty inverter? I checked all connections etc...

  I think that this is the reason why your laptop does not start after the recovery procedure.
  Seems that the drivers that are part of the image are not compatible with the new motherboard.
  Maybe the driver chipset or make sure you graphics card drivers some worries and windows crashes before starting the system
  Maybe you could star the windows in safe mode. Press F8 just after pressing the power button / stop. Then choose Safe mode.
  In safe mode, uninstall the chipset driver and the graphics driver and then try to start it again.

  If that does not help, then install windows using a clean Microsoft CD.
