Portege 4010: No boot

Hello everyone,
today I received a used Portege 4010. I have pluged in the cable and I wanted to start. Green DC, lamp orange battery and when I walk there gree power lamp appears. But that's all, nothing more. The screen stays black, only a very small noise is in the machine, I think it comes to HD. The curiosity was that I unplugged the power cable (while the power of the lamp was on) and start the laptop computer was! I wanted to do it again, but no luck. Only 2 times I managed to do that start this way, the switch sur-rien-> Switch/switch sur-rien-> by unplugging the power cord-> startup! I then tried to start a car boot CD Knoppix (linux), but after 10 seconds of loading linux screen went black again! Can someone help me? What could be? Battery? RAM? Wherer can I do a clear Cmos? It's very frustrating :-( Thanks a lot, greetings from Germany, Chris

Hi Christian

It's really easy to tell what the problem can be don t do you know if the previous owner had any problem?

Is it possible to enter the BIOS settings? Try it by pressing the ESC key at startup to the top.

I have bad start up and now that I have, I can't access some of the problems, the keys get stuck, funny noises... beeps all the symptoms of a questionable keyboard. What I can do, otherwise, buy a replacement keyboard (v.expensive) or use an external keyboard?

    Hello

Maybe your husband has changed something? ;)
But seriously, if you have some problems with the boot and keyboard in my opinion, you should try to pick you up BONES. If the malfunction of the same images I recommend to contact the ASP for more information.

  • Portege 4010 - after upgrading RAM, nothing happens

    Hello
A beginner very believed in that.

I picked up some 512 MB PC133 SDRAM for my 4010 but when I put them in the slots and pressing the power button... Nothing happened.

Would appreciate any help at all...

    Hello!

Yes, maybe 2 x 128 MB modules were the original modules, that they were delivered with the laptop.

I think you should try other modules. If you use the modules of noname, they could be possibly not work or problems as bluescreens etc.
As far as I know that the Portege 4010 can be upgraded to 1 GB of RAM. You can use two 512 MB modules then you should buy RAM from Kingston of high quality for example.

Here is the part number for Toshiba for a 512 MB module I founded with Google:
    PA3108U - 1 M 51

  • Portege 4010 - upgrade memory

I have a Portege 4010 and cannot find the expansion Bay of memory to upgrade the memory. Under my laptop's hard drive battery, dvd and what I think should be the memory, BUT it has 2 wires attached to it.

    Hello

Memory modules are hidden under the keyboard!
You will need to remove first a plastic cover to think above the keys F1 to F12.
Then you should find 2 screws holding the keyboard.

Please be careful because the keyboard is connected to the motherboard with a thin flat cable

Then, you could see the memory modules. Gently press the two latches.
One end of the strip of memory expansion will pop up. Enter the module memory expansion, then take it out.

    I hope this helps...

  • The Portege 4010 problems

I recently bought a refurbished Portege 4010 and it works fine, except that pips sound a lot. It seems to be random, may occur as once in 3-4 seconds, or it may seem fine for a few minutes then * glitch glitch glitch *. Looks like the tempo of the sound is slowed and then catch upwards, and it sometimes makes a noise dry sound.

I have a Portege 4000, which did explode a little sound each time than in quite awhile, but he appeared rarely as once every 30 minutes and was barely noticeable. On this 4010, it's much worse.

I have all the Toshiba official drivers, running a twisted installation of XP SP2. I tried a clean install and the sound has the same faults.

Right now I use ULi drivers I found on the Nvidia download page, they have helped a bit, the sound bugs are now more sporadically, but when they occur (once every two minutes or more), they are always as bad as they were at the start. Also, ULi drivers are sound drivers only I could find that have sufficient volume levels, with the drivers found on your site the wave volume distorts when turned over 20-25%, now I don't have to worry about that while she prepares to max as do some games, the sound will not be distorted. I had the same problem on my old Portege 4000, at the time I did not know the difficulty pilots and used a volume reduction program to force 'bad' apps and games to mix parameters.

The 4010 is such a portable grand, when you use a second battery, he gets the same battery life of 5 hours of the 4000 and with more processing power. It's a shame that something minor like a sound chip of ruins all the fun. Yes, I know it's pretty old, but as long as he does his job, which is no big deal.

So is there any fix I can try? Thanks in advance.

    Good job!

  • Upgrade memory on Portege 4010

I want to upgrade my memory Portege 4010 and I know that I need 144 pins/PC133 SO - DIMM SD - RAM. Unfortunately I couldn't understand (in the same after talking to the Toshiba Austria), if I have to buy memory may be high or low density.

Most of the memory at low prices on eBay is high density and I'm afraid to buy an incompatible.

I hope that someone already has experience with it. It seems to be my last chance to get some relevant information.

    Thank you.

As I remember for Portege 4010 maximum memory is 1 GB (2 x 512 MB) and no matter if you choose the version high or low density.
If you need 100% guarantee you choose the version of low density.

Anyone know if I can change the slimbay on my portege 4010 on a CD - R, or ideally a DVD-R?
If so, what are the best places to get these?
(I live in the United Kingdom)

    Hello

I found the info this Portege comes with two discs. Readers are:
    Toshiba (SD-C2502) and TEAC (DV28E-B).

I put t really know if any DVD-R/RW drive is compatible, but you can contact the Service of your country partner and ask them. They are usually updated hardware and should have enough experience.

Otherwise, try to find a few upgrade for laptop shop in your country.

  • Screen dirty on my Portege 4010

My portege 4010 were grey marks on its screen for a while. I tried various screen cleaning fluids and they don't spend. They seem to come from the contact of the screen with the keys?

How can I remove these, or if I can replace the piece of plastic that covers the LCD screen?

    Hello

If you can't clean the screen with different cleaning fluids, it may be that those gray marks are not dirt but bumps!

My suggestion is that if you don't clean it, you should contact a Toshiba Service partner (perhaps you warranty) and check it out! It may be that the teeth are caused by a keyboard set too high. This should be verified to avoid a higher damage.

  • Sound on Portege 4010 problems

    Hello

I am the proud owner of a Toshiba Portege 4010, but the only problem that I couldn't solve is the sound.

The problem occurs when I use MP3 reading program (Winamp / TRAKTOR DJ). Music moves for a very short period of time, perhaps some 20 milliseconds every 1 to 2 minutes (on a random date).

I tried to change each buffer option in my mp3 with no result reading programs.
I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 with all drivers installed on the Toshiba site (including the Windows XP audio driver)

The problem does not disappear if the laptop works plugged (best performance of the processor).

If someone has encountered this problem and knows the solution, I would really appreciate it.
I use this laptop for playing background music (I am a DJ).

    Best regards
    Mircea Bartic

    Hi Mircea

It is not easy to say what may be the problem. If I understood you right this would happen only if the laptop is running on battery. Am I wrong?

I assume that the processor or HARD drive maybe activity interrupts the music. Please try checking activity (Performance) CPU settings in the tool under the profile that is used if the device is running on battery.

It is also possible that some applications (program antivir) forced the HARD drive activity. Please check all these aspects.

  • Portege 4010 Bluetooth - connection for samsung and motorola phones probs

I have a portege 4010 with bluetooth. I am trying to connect to our two phones - a samsung sgh-e370 (newish) and a motorola V600 (2 years). Both have BT I downloaded and installed the latest Tosh BT stack (4.0.something). Shows Device Manager four drivers of tosh in BT - all are OK. I have allowed the discovery and allow the connection on the tosh. I did the same thing on the phones. When I run the "Add new connection" Wizard on tosh, he finds two phones and they appear under the devices section in BT Manager with the names I gave them on real phones. However, neither picked up phone tosh and showed no tosh by asking the numbers of pins on the phones.

The net result is I now two phones display in BT Manager, but if I click on is and choose use log I recover the error "connection failed".

If I try to find the portege using the phone, the samsung it is but motorola doesn't have. I can't get the motorola to twin with the tosh - it just says "unable to pair up with the portege.

    Any help gratefully received.

    RJ

    Hello

I don't really know what is the problem in your case, but I did this a few times with my Motorola RAZR V3 and it works fantastic. The whole was finished for 1 minute. I hope that you do it in the right order, but I am writing to you the steps I did:

1 activate the Bluetooth using the FN + F8 key combination
    2. install the new hardware if necessary (some of them)
    3. start the Bluetooth stack
4 turn on the Bluetooth on the mobile phone (discoverable)

    5. Select the Express mode > next
    6. choose visible device listed in 'Bluetooth device list' > next
7 choose to identify passkey (1234)
    8. Enter the key in the mobile phone. Twinning will be success

I did it on this path, and now I can send all documents in my Tecra. If you want to use as a modem, you must do this:

    1. after peeling going on Next and configure the internet connection
    (provider number) > finish
    2. the new connection will be created in the Bluetooth stack utility
    3. you can start the numbering with double click or click with the right button of the mouse and choose 'connect '.

  • Portege A200 - cannot boot from the recovery disc

Hi, I have a Portege A200 and an original unused Toshiba Recovery CD.

When I go to recover, the DVD drive just turns and turns and nothing happens. I have tried different methods of booting with the disk to like, by pressing the C key, select boot from CD/DVD or just turn it on with the DVD in the drive. Same problem, the disc turns right away.

I also checked the drivers TOshiba download page and let down when I found out that there are several drivers for the same thing, like the 3 drivers LAN! Which should I use? Also, I can confirm that the CD/DVD drive works fine because I already loaded windows XP, no problem.

    Any suggestion is appreciated.

    Kieran99.

    Hey Kieran99,

I also think that s is not a problem of the CD/DVD drive. If it turns over and over again once he recognizes a disc but it can t be read correctly.

Regarding your question about drivers I think that it of fairly easy. I can recommend the vendor and device ID in Device Manager. With these identification numbers, you can search on this website http://www.pcidatabase.com/ to determine the LAN controller. All that s! :)

In addition, you can check the ID s in Device Manager, if you click the LAN card properties > Details > PCI\VEN_xxxx & DEV_xxxx

  • Portege R100, PXE - boot problem - E61:Media Test failure, check cable

My portege r100 4004GAH original hard drive has had some problems recently, so I decided to replace it with a bigger 4006GAH. Specifications, it seemed that it would be appropriate.

So I tried to install standard windows top. Unfortunately as I soon discovered that didn't work and lead to BSOD. I looked online and remembered that I had in fact to use the recovery of three discs. Fortunately for me I still had the freshly sealed and I've also owned a combined remarkable Targus CD drive supported. If in the three discs are gone. All seemed well and after that the last drive ended, I was asked to remove the disc. The laptop has rebooted and then gave me the

PXE - E61:Media Test failure, check cable
PXE - M0F: Exit Intel PXE ROM
    Insert system disk
    Press a key to continue...

I thought it might be in the order of start, but verified that and it seemed right. HD was first. I also changed the order and the same error came.
I thought while another component of my laptop may be broken. So I put my old hard drive in. It started fine.
The next thought that the new hard drive was defective.

Fortunately, this is not the case. Because when I used the recovery disks not only heard disk hard turns to the top, but the hard drives were detected and recovery installation displays the correct memory size.

I'm completely stumped on hat w what is the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

It is not easy to say what the problem is but you said the Portege started fine with the old HDD. So I think that there is something wrong with the new.

In your case I test the HARD drive with a special tool like Drive Fitness Test. Download the CD image, burn it to a CD and boot from it. Then you can test the HARD drive.
On the same site is a user's guide if you want to know more.
    http://www.HitachiGST.com/HDD/support/download.htm#DFT

In addition I am interested in what you have the same problem with a Microsoft installation disc if you have one.
So try if your HARD disk has no errors.

  • Wireless - connection Portege 4010 problem

I have a 4010 Portege (PP401A-024FMP), who refuses to connect through the mini pci wireless lan card. It identifies when there are wireless networks autour, but does not connect. I even created my secure and open wireless network to see if it was a security issue nothing works.

The laptop is running a new copy of Windows XP SP3, including relevant drivers from Toshiba Web site.
In addition, I also tried a fresh copy of Ubuntu 8.10 to see if it's XP causing the fault - Ubuntu do not connect any.

There is no problem in (XP) Device Manager wireless card is faulty even if it displays the wireless networks?

    Any help is appreciated!

Are you sure that's not because of false settings on your router?
