Restore PC to factory settings. F9 key does not

I had trouble with my computer of Windows 8 (not 8.1) and it has not been updated. I asked around on the way to solve this problem and was going around in circles and I gave up trying to fix it myself.

I took to a computer guy and he had a muck autour with computer and considers that the best thing to do would be to do a factory reset.

I have a laptop ASUS X501A. It came with Windows 7, but later, I installed Windows 8. So basically what I'm trying to do is to reset the PC when I first pulled it out of the box a little less than 2 years ago.

In the manual for this laptop, to do a factory reset, I need to press [F9] during startup, then it will turn out to do other instructions with the recovery on my HARD drive partition. Only problem is, [F9] does nothing. I tried it spamming as soon as I see the original ASUS logo. I tried the same before holding, I press the button IT and keep your hand on it, but nothing seems to happen.

Am I using the wrong button? Do I need to press a different key? (I tried all the other function keys - some of them do other things, but not what I want) I'm just a klutz when it comes to keys?

Help would be appreciated, thanks

Hi Daniel,.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, in this situation where you don't have any disk and according to your answer you don't have a recovery disk.

You must contact the ASUS Support, they could help you make a computer factory reset. Please click the link for the ASUS below support.

The F2 and F12 keys work, but the F8 key will not open the "Advanced Boot Options", so I can't to the "Restore Dell DataSafe and emergency Backup" or any other advanced option.  System Restore will not work either.

I ran chkdsk and sfc hard disk (via the Kapersky Rescue disk) and neither solved the problem.  Then I copied its data on the hard drive.

I would like to restore the laptop to factory settings (assuming that it would be better to reinstall Windows because the drivers Dell would be included already?).   There is a folder on the hard disk called "emergency" and contains a Backup*.exe file and several Backup*.dsb files.

Is given this scenario, possible to restore to factory settings?  Or am I forced to reinstall Windows from scratch?

    What version of Windows?

7b error message indicates the operation SATA (SATA Mode) setting got changed in the BIOS Setup or possibly the hard drive may be roasted.

Restart, and then press F2 before Windows starts to load to open the BIOS Setup. Look for the option SATA or SATA Mode operation (models name it differently).  I don't see the BIOS screen options in the online manual, but the options for this parameter can be: RAID, AHCI or RAID Autodetect / ATA. Post back and we say exactly what options are available and how she got now.

If you are in the BIOS Setup, also find the Boot Sequence option and make sure that the internal hard drive is ranked first on the list. If it is not first, move it to all first, save the changes and exit the installation program. See if it boots now.

If you reinstall Windows by using a Windows Dell reinstall drive, you should not ask for the product key. It should install automatically by itself. HOWEVER, you will need to have the product keys for all the other apps that you want on this system, for example Microsoft Office, so make sure that you have the product keys and the floppies to install before you clean the hard drive.

    Hello

I have experience blackheads on the dell splash screen, then it continues to the f1 f2 to Setup because I don't have a floppy drive, it is okay to continue. On this screen but I have blue dashes experience everywhere in this moving around every 20 seconds or more. When I hit f1 I get a low quality graphics Windows load bar and then a black screen after 5 to 10 seconds. Followed by a blue screen of death with the code 0x0000008e. Then restart. I then tried the F8 key and restored in a last known point that worked, does not solve my problem. Tried to boot in SafeMode (normal) and I get the blue wheel scrolling as it's almost here, and then a reboot without explanation. Also, I tried to move the cards gfx and switching of slot machines, this is not having an effect. But I noticed when using a card, I get a quick 5 beep at startup, then using the other card it works fine. Is a card? This would have an effect on my boot because of the missing material? I have the Acer Aspire 7741z laptop. The computer has frequent problems, and I want to restore it defaults. I've already saved important files and had planned to do a full restore to the factory settings, but the eRecovery program does not work for me. It starts the process, says that it needs to restart, check I want to replace the data on the hard drive and restarts. The problem is, it just restarts. No recovery process, no reset factory default. Alt + F10 during boot process does nothing.

I checked the partitions still exist, and I made no changes to the system since the purchase (about formats, etc.). Of course, I'm no longer under warranty period, it seems getting direct support from Acer is not going to happen.

If anyone can help? I really want to restore this laptop to its default settings.

  • After a restore to the factory settings, where personal files are?

I recently had a problem on my laptop (gateway) that prevents Windows to boot the system.  I went through the automatic tests on splash screens.  Files were good, the disk check was good, went to a restore point, but still was not able to start.  I got a message that there was no specified "configuration change".  So I chose the option to restore factory settings.  I didn't need a disk to do - it took place without no boot disk required.  There was a message related to the restoration who said that my files could be stored on the hard drive partitioned part.  I couldn't get to my personal files anyway, so I decided to take the chance to do the restore and hope that Windows would save my stuff.  Well, Windows is running, but I can't find my files.  The page of my computer shows 2 hard drives, 'Local' and 'Recovery', but I don't know how to access recovery or if my files are still there.

Is there a chance that my stuff is still in this machine, or I'm just the GROUND?

Thanks in advance for any kind souls who can solve the riddle!

    Hello

"Recovery" partition will be the software that was used to perform the recovery to factory settings.

We should never touch except to make recovery disks, failure of hard disk for you to reinstall Vista on a new hard drive.

Windows does not save your data when you perform a restore to the factory settings.

Your recovery software factory settings is provided by the gateway.

It is an Option in their software.

I see from my records that a similar case has been solved by uninstalling and reinstalling the update WAT - KB971033

Open the Windows Update - click the link view updates installed on the left of the page

in the list, find the WAT update KB971033, and then uninstall it.

Then restart and reinstall the update from here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033

redemarrer restart again, then try to change your product key to the one on the sticker - what is happening this time?

I have a HP Pavilion 521N Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack 2 of Office I got from my grandmother. The computer is running extremely slow. I want to restore it to factory again. No, you guessed it! Press F10 and enter the HP recovery process. Use the advanced settings and perform a full recovery destructive. Once the recovery process is finished (and be patient, a lot of programs will be installed after you get in Windows), uninstall the software obsolete/undesirable/trial. Upgrade to XP Service Pack 3 and make all Windows updates. Install current versions of common programs such as Adobe Reader, Java, Flash, Shockwave, etc. Install a good antivirus like NOD32 (commercial), Avast or Avira (the two of them have free versions) and enjoy your "new" computer MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

    Ideas:

    • You have problems with programs
    • Error messages
    • Recent changes to your computer
    • What you have already tried to solve the problem

Reinstall the appropriate Operationg system provided with your computer.

Contact the manufacturer of your computer.

How to get Vista recovery Media and/or to use the Vista recovery Partition on your computer.

There is no Vista free download legal available.

    http://welcome.HP.com/country/us/en/contact_us.html

Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.

Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.

See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.

Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...

Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.

Ask them if you can also make recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.

They will tell you how to do this.

Every computer manufacturer has their way of doing recovery disk/s.

Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.

There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.

If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

  • Portege R700 - Touch Pad, ecoUtility and presentation of the key does not

    Hello

    I got a Portege R700 with Windows 7 64 bit.
This machine starts very slowly after the log in user mode only.
The system is waiting for 1 to 2 Minutes before you can work. In administrator mode erverything is fine and fast.

Thus our directors thought it might be the Toshiba Software and a lot has been disabled or uninstalled.
Because this did not help and because I thought that it migt be cause of Kaspersky, I started to reinstalled and update the software from Toshiba. Most of it works now. Shortcut keys does not work, then I start TfcRst.exe via autostart now, even he would somehow it would be better in 'systemecommencent '.

But still some keys do not work. The Tablet touch power switch, just above the touch pad does not work.
The Fn F9 works. And the two keys to the right upper corner (ecoUtility/off button and the presentation-Key) do not work. In all three major, I get a pop up saying "this function not taken in charge.

Anyone has any idea of this?

Help ASAP would be appreciated because it is really annoying

    Hello Gracepullan1,

I understand that shift key of your MacBook Pro does not respond as before. Fortunately the steps below can help to restore the functionality of the SHIFT key on your Mac.

    1. In the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. On the view menu, choose the speech.
    3. Click on the text to Speech tab.
    4. If "Text Speak selected when you press the button" is enabled, the key or combination of keys set to read the text cannot be used for other purposes, or used for typing text - click on set the key and replace it with a less commonly used key combination (try using the modifier such as SHIFT keys, command) Option and control). Or disable the option "Read the selected text when the key is pressed".
    5. Click the accessibility pane or universal access in system preferences, and then click the keyboard tab.
    6. Make sure the slow keys is off. With slow keys on, you must press a key for a longer period of time so he can be recognized.
    7. In the accessibility pane or universal access, click the mouse and make sure mouse keys is turned off. With the active mouse buttons, you cannot use the numeric keypad to enter numbers - instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to activate the MouseKeys to five presses down option, you can disable this option to avoid accidentally activate it.) If the mouse keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard without the numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Impossible to type while mouse keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
    8. If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard do not work as expected, see Mac OS x: how to change the behavior of the function keys.
    9. If the problem persists, use the keyboard Viewer to help isolate the problem:
      1. Click the component language & text (Mac OS X v10.6) or international (Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier) in system preferences.
      2. Click on the tab Input Sources (or tab Menu entry under Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier version).
      3. Click on the keyboard and the characters 'On' box Viewer checkbox to select (click on the viewer of keyboard "On" checkbox under Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
      4. In the entry menu (flag), choose Show Keyboard Viewer.

  • If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application) and try to type something using the keys that failed before to see if they highlight in the keyboard Viewer.
  • Start up from the Mac OS X installation disc, choose Terminal from the utilities menu and test buttons that did not previously.  If the keys work while started from the install disc, the keyboard works correctly.  How to solve a problem of software allows to isolate the software problem that may be causing the keys to not answer.

When you request support, please provide the model name and product number complete (p/n) of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq made thousands of computer models. Without this information, it can be difficult, even impossible to help you solve your problem.

The information requested above are on the bottom of your computer, inside the battery compartment or on the BIOS boot screen. Please see How can I find my model number or product number? for help more to find this information. DO NOT include your serial number. Please enter the product/model information consumer HP Online Support page and post it here for our review.

Please use the support of HP recovery, you created when you first you computer Configuration. If you don't create this media, please contact the official support HP customer in your region / country, via the Portal Support HP's worldwide, to see if the HP recovery support is available for your computer.

If you found "recovered" or the Windows product key from the old hard drive, it will not work. The key to the used factory also requires a SLP/SLIC 2.1 BIOS and an appropriate OEM SLP/SLIC certificate.

Alternatively, if you can still read the 25 characters on the COA affixed Microsoft Windows product key at the bottom of the computer, you can install Windows 7 Home Basic by using this key. Please see "how to install Windows 7 without the disc" to get instructions on how to download Windows 7, create the installation media and install Windows 7 using the product key 25 character of the COA Microsoft on your computer. Please note that this facility is not all customizations of HP or HP value-added that was original installed on your computer. Also note that you will need to download and install most of the drivers from the HP support for your computer page.
