The question is what resolutions on external screen will be supported by the graphics card for s laptop.

It's really important because many users in the forums Ubuntu has reported that, after that an updated bios updated widescreen stuff work. Since the you´re works with Vista, I would say firstly you update your BIOS, remove all drivers display with 'Driver Cleaner Pro' and then try the drivers from the website of intel again (as an especially for this wide screen problem)

  Maybe it works, I confused why it doesn't since this chipset is designed to pull many of the higher resolutions and even all res widescreen 1680 x 1050 and 1440 x 900.

  you mean on the external screen, Don t you? If you have an intel chipset graphic why Don t you download the drivers from the website of intel.
