SSD in M17x-R4

Hi guys,.

I need help or advice please.

I would like to replace my HDD with a SSD.  Is not a computer geek, I am at a loss of what to buy.  When I went to get a quote he asked me if it was "a SATA, PCIe etc. M2". I had to look stupid because he told me then it would cost $100 more, the cost of the new SSD, plus cost of the transfer of data and I assume it will also throw something for good measure.

As I said, I have I7 M17x-R4 3630 2,4 gHz Ivybridge 16 GB of RAM.

Anyone has any ideas to help me save some coins please?

Thanks Rodrigo.  You are always so helpful.

  • M17x R3 using Samsung Evo 500 GB SSD

I tried all Intel drivers I can think of to get the Wizard software to recognize the Sata for my Samsung Evo 850 500 gb SSD interface. The drive is recognized by the software and said it is authenticated, but it does not recognize for the SSD ACHI or Sata interface. So I can't activate fast mode. Is there anyone who can tell me what driver to use with Windows 10 64-bit? The device manager says that it is properly installed and working properly. I have a Nvidia GTX 460 M and 3D display.

I appreciate your help in this matter. Everyone is silent on the issue. Although Dell does not support upgrading Windows 10 for the Alienware M17X R3 they provide Windows 10 drivers if you are looking for on their support site for a generic Alienware M17X R3. Unfortunately, they do not contribute with the installation of Samsung 850 Evo and enabling rapid mode after installation.

After a week of reading and trial and error, I got to work. Samsung told me it is plug-and-play and would work fine with my system. They refused to help me with the configuration of Windows or their software. If you try to add the 850 Evo to your system and you use Win 8 or higher it will not work in mode rapid on the Alienware M17X R3. It keeps to a red X for the operating system on the control of compatibility for fast mode. The Evo, even after switching to AHCI mode in the latest bios Dell (A12) for the M17X R3 would not recognize the new interface Sata to 6gbts per second. That's what I did to make it work:

    (1) resettled bios A08 to leave the interface of the motherboard with the hard drive by using the updated drivers Sata III. A10 A12 & BIOS would not recognize drivers Sata3.

    (2) select ACHI to the interface on the configuration of the Bios screen.

    (3) boot to a CD to install a clean version of Windows 7 on the new Samsung 850 Evo 500 gb SSD after updated the bios A08 and switch to ACHI mode. Install Windows 7 - I used Windows 7 Professional, because I had two copies of it with licenses.

    (4) I installed a dual-band wireless card from intel the 7260. I downloaded the Intel file named "wireless_18.20.0_e164.exe" to install the driver for the wireless card to add to the network.

    (5) download the .net framework 4.5 from microsoft and installed first. It can save a lot of time.

  • Evolution M17x - R3 Graphics Card options?

Hi all, I know that this question was put to death, little but here goes.

    M17X R3 | GTX560M | 120 MHz screen | 16 GB OF RAM. I7 2720QM | SSD + HDD

I want to upgrade the graphics card (previously I had made the gesture of upgrade to a 580 M but unfortunately this card does not have), but as graphics cards are expensive for already outdated tech I have a few thoughts on what is my best bang for buck upgrade?

I see that it is possible to go all the way up to a GTX 880 M but it is very expensive, and being such a relatively powerful card the rest of the laptop will be able to stay with her? or the card is going to be greatly bottleneck?

What do you think would be a decent upgrade on the current GTX 560 M without breaking the Bank?

I look forward to hearing your ideas, especially if you are a person who made this upgrade!

    Thank you very much

    Hello

Officially, it will go up to a 580 M, unofficially it could go up to 880 M (but I wouldn't recommend it due to overheating). Other that that, you can go up to 780 M, but we cannot guarantee that performance will not be affected by your processor (bottleneck).

  • SSD intel SRT speed up lack of button (caching)

Hello comrades alienware owners, I'm a newcomer in this club and been out of the loop of things tech for about 4 years I lived under a rock. I recently did some intensive research because I bought my new computer laptop m17x of R4. so here is the installer, Windows 7 pro sp1 i7 3740QM 1 TB 5400 RPM HARD drive 32 GB SSD HD 7970 m 32 GB of ram my goal was of course to the caching to improve performance. so, from the start of factory setting, the interface of sorts shows the acceleration tab, I clicked in but click on Cancel again to jump off to make sure I have the right to all components, I then immediately restart and checked my bios, which she read in the RAID, after connection and my TRIE, the acceleration tab when missing opening. I did a few things here on: I've updated to the latest driver, after I uninstalled the previous ones. I've switched back to AHCI then reboot, then reboot again to change to RAID, then reboot again without success. It does not display. off desperate measure, I checked there is no any partition on the SSD drive to reformat the SSD drive. Then I restore the system to its factory condition. former driver has been installed, the bios is in RAID mode, but the acceleration tab does not always show. I've now updated my BIOS with the latest version of A11 too which doesn't always help. Could someone help me on this?

First of all, the graphics card can be improved and if so, should I go with?

Depending on the type of memory I thought to install is:

    Crucial Ballistix Sport 16 GB DDR3 - 1600 PC3-12800)

I heard that 8 GB was supposed to be the max, but that was only because it was all that was available at the time, the system was released and that others have used up to 16 GB.

It will work or is there another suggestion?

Thirdly, the SSD I plan on installing is:

    Crucial BX200 480 GB SATA III 6 Gb/s 2.5 "Solid State Drive CT480BX200SSD

Still, I read the system never was not originally designed to support SATA III but if you use BIOS version A09 it would work.

    Is that correct or suggestions?

The last two things I was wondering was that the system overheat easily and stops, to rebuild the thermal paste on the CPU and heatsink help correct this?  As well as to clean the fans, of course.  Or are there other options I should look into?

Anyone know where to buy a new adapter power for this system as well?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me with.

    Hello.

First of all I would like to ditch the 620M processor, it's i7 below, you can get and dual-core only, not quad.

You should be able to find an i7 820QM at a reasonable price, these days, 920QM or 940QM would be even better, they were the fastest available for this model.

Once you have upgraded the CPU to something on an i7 720QM you can upgrade you RAM to 32 GB at 1333 MHz with no problems, if you want faster than 1333 you need to adjust overclock settings in the system BIOS.

You have two HDD slots, up to any size SSD 1 TB plug-and-play (or to the more require very few adjustments BIOS) Firmware may need to be updated but also that it should be OK, just stick with an alienware used as Samsung brand, and if you can get one from the SSD slightly more older you might save money , you don't need a model 'latest and greatest '.

Upgrade your GPU in the M17xR2 model can be a pain, the fan control is terrible and to really improve and play safely, you should probably use HW Monitor, so you do not cook your cards.

Memory the AMD maps are more lenient when it comes to bi - GPU - I think remember me some upgraded GPU not X shot or SLIing in this model, but now is earlier in order not to forget.

The M17xR2 is a very popular model, with thousands of people, the GPU upgrade - you can having to sort through the garbage to find the jewels but the info you need should be available if you do a search on google

NotebookReview Forum would be a great place to start, 99% of the info you need should be there, the other 1% proably will be on techinferno.

Guilbert - I still think that the M17xR2 has been one of the best they have done...

  • White map too screen of Nvidia drivers on Windows 10 on Alienware M17X R3 - no 3D with GTX 660 m Nvidia in R3.

After getting the SSD for work and most of the other drivers in Windows 10 I came across to CONV error while starting the GeForce program to update the card nvidia GTX 460 M graphics drivers for my M17X R3 3D. Is not the Lone Ranger with this problem it has been discussed on the Nvidia site and a beta version of GeForce has been recommended. It seemed to solve these problems for a while until that they solved the problem in the next update released version 358.50 for win 10 64-bit. I have not had the problem since this upgrade. Unfortunately, it is not an option on the Dell Web site for display drivers.

I also bought the GTX 660 M install in the M17x R3, but I might as well have bought a rope to use the computer as an anchor. It would have been more useful. Regardless of the many people use it in the M17X R3 none of them use the 3D feature. I got the card to operate for the graphics and PhysX features only and I had to change many infs for this. The 3D feature is not supported in the chipset of the motherboard. At least not in the Sata mode. If someone got the GTX 660 M Nvidia Graphics for work in 3D on the Alienware M17X R3? If so, what was the secret?

    Concerning

    Big3D Emerson

If somebody has got to work in 3D M17X R3 in Windows 10:

    Hello

Unfortunately, according to the policy document, the M17x series is not supported on Windows 10. Some users have successfully installed Windows 10 on these systems not supported. But they have all the pilot survey (example = 7/8/8.1 driver installation) to force it to work. Dell doesn't have the resources to do this on systems not supported.  I recommend that you also try this announcement on Notebook Review and Alienware Arena forums for assistance.

  • The upgrade to R4 Alienware M17x?

So any1 have improved their r4 m17x with their own SSD memories?

    Was it difficult?

    I just spare laptop 8 GB 1600 memory and 128GB 2.5 "SSD...

These perfectly without any problem, so replace it with the default of Dell?

Moreover, for disks hard, if I chose simply to 500 GB of HARD drive, is the other disk drive HARD vacuum? because the M17x has I think 2 slots for HDD/SSD right?

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry for the miscommunication.  There are 2 slots HDD and 1 slot mSATA.

Answer please if you have any additional questions.

  • How to change back to SSD HARD drive?

My mcbook pro comes with the original 500 GB of HARD drive. When he ran with a problem, I went to an apple repair shop. Problem was in the charts, and he suggested the HARD drive to be replaced by a 120 GB SDD. So it has been replaced, but the guy on the left HARD drive as a storage device. Moment where DDI is left with small space and when I update to OS X El Capitan of OS Sierra, it had to be installed in the HARD disk drive. Could someone please give instructions to install the new OS to the SDS to lose all my data and the current configuration and it is also possible to install windows XP on the HARD drive and 10.  Either by the way, I got Windows 10 and XP shared with the SDS via parallels. Thank you

How to use an SSD with your HARD drive

If you want to use an SSD as boot with your existing HARD disk drive, as the disk 'data', here is what you can do.

After installing the SSD, you need to partition and format the SSD using disc utility disc. Then install OS X on the SSD. Once installed OSX boot from SSD. Startup disk preferences to set up the SSD as the boot volume.

Open the preferences users and groups. Click the lock and authenticate you. Or CTRL - RIGHT click on your username account list in the sidebar and select Advanced Options in the context menu. You will see a field called "Home dir: ' on the far right, you will see an Edit button. Click on it. In the file dialog box, navigate to the location in house now located on the HARD disk (disk HARD/users/user_name /.) Select the folder, click the Open button. Restart the computer, as shown. When the computer starts, it will now use the home located on the HARD drive folder.

Another more technical method involving the Terminal and the alias is discussed in depth here: using OS X with a SSD and HDD - Matt Gemmell configuration. It's my preferred approach because I can choose which records of the House, I want to on the HARD drive and I don't want to. For example, I like to keep Documents and library files on the SSD because I frequently access their content.

Make sure that you keep the bootable system entirely on your HARD drive where you need it.

  • Question of cloning for SSD upgrade on 12 Macbook Pro

Previously, I did an upgrade to SSD on my Macbook Air to 2012 according to the instructions of JetDrive transcend. Basically connection via USB 3 and using Mac OS X to clear (and format) disc utilities new SSD, then restore again SSD and then remove the original 128 GB SSD and insert the new 480 GB SSD.  For about a month and so far without problem.

Now I'm trying to 2012 Macbook upgrade my Pro partner (on 10.11.6).  I got a Crucial SSD MX300 to replace his HARD drive.  Crucial comes with (or recommend) Acronis software.  And a lot of the messages of the forum recommend Carbon Copy Clone.

My question is if I can use the same method for the cloning of the HD as my Macbook Air (just restore disk of Mac OS X utilities)?  This time, I'm upgrading HARD drive and I don't know if something is different.  At the same time, if I got lucky the first time, I don't not ruin Macbook Pro my spouse this time.

    Thank you.

Yes, you can use disk utility to clone your MBP wives, but unlike CCC, it will not clone the recovery and Partition.

  • Cloning of SSD HD via active with Filevault disk utility

    Hi all

I want to improve my HD to SSD.

I intend on using disk utility for recovery mode to clone my HD to a Virgin SSD I bought.

I must, however, Filevault enabled on my HD.

It will be a problem when it comes to cloning the drive?

    Thank you

    Adam

No, it shouldn't be a problem. It may be necessary first turn on FileVault and encrypt the SSD. But if there is no problem just turn off FileVault on the HARD drive.

  • Sonnet Tempo SSD Pro - does not fit into my Mac Pro.

I just bought a Sonnet Tempo SSD Pro Plus (the same, physically, like the Sonnet Tempo SSD Pro)

I can't even came close it enter my Mac Pro end 2012. On the back of the bumps in the fan card, even with the fan cover pulled back.   This isn't a case to remove the lower lip, which obviously I do, I can't do it AT all, not even at an angle.

I called Sonnet, but incredibly the tech said that it must adapt.

It seems that I have only 2 choices: unscrew the fan and moving it more far forward of the mac (somehow) to cut about 1/2 "on the back of the Sonnet card.  The latter would obviously kill my warranty, and I don't even know if the bloody thing still works.

To my amazement, I find nothing about it online.  It's like the Twilight Zone.

Any ideas?  Someone knows has a video that shows a successful installation?

Pls confirm what Mac you have.

There is no end of 2012 Mac Pro, only mid 2012.

There is a 2012 end MacBook Pro.

Many retailers who sell SSDS have diagrams or installation videos. An example https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macpro_2010/

  • Editing a file to remove confidential data from a solid state drive (ssd)?

I understand that El Capitan has removed the option "Secure Empty trash" because of hard drives (ssd) state how strong. So, I try to understand how I can work around it.

Let's say I have a Pages or Word file with a list of names that should be kept confidential, and I want this file to the trash.

What happens if I change the file to remove these names? Removing ssd data? Can I trash then the file as usual without worrying about confidential data remaining on the ssd?

Or what should I do if I replaced the confidential names with something? For example, if I was John Doe on the list, what happens if I change to be John xyz? XYZ crash Doe on the ssd?

No it doesn't, use FileVault to encrypt the contents of the disc.
