Is the problem in Primatte, or y at - it some small problem that I only know AE underutilizes available RAM?

  It is probably rebuild the search Index (maybe called something in one of the updates for this action) - Although it could do other things as well (it's hard to tell).  You can do this finish faster in general by reducing the number of file types or sites included in the Index (Start/Control / Panel / Indexing Options / Advanced)- but the file types and locations are not included in basic research (it's a compromise).  Some people say that excluding files .xml help (especially if you have a big disco).

  If this does not solve the problem (or you're stuck with it running and it will not be closed) Download Process Explorer http://download.cnet.com/Process-Explorer/3000-2094_4-10223605.html and see which fits all the CPU usage - it should provide more information than Manager and helps focus in spots on the problem.

How is it mine use so much? Is there a way to have Windows 7 use less RAM?

  You do not want to edit long movies in AE. After effects is NOT video editing software.  A non-linear editing (NLE) like Premiere Pro is for editing photos to tell a story. AE is for compositing, Visual effects and graphic cartoons. It is for the creation of clichés that you then use in an NLE.

  I suggest to get at least 16 GB of RAM to work with AE, but your system should work as it is. You will need to learn to manage your memory well and to get a glimpse at lower resolutions where possible.

  Now, as to your original question. AE is not simply to play a video stream, as does a NLE. After effects (such as other software based compositing on pixels) with completely decompressed frames. When you put a video compressed in a composition, the size of the original video file has no effect on the size of the images that works with After Effects. After effects unpacks this video and works internally with a full, uncompressed resolution, frames. AE calculates the values of each pixel in each image, comes with a new pixel and then reads these pixels. Who is?

  In fact, since you have so little RAM and the processor is not either, it may be a good idea to convert your video files highly compressed in a good intermediate codec for the shots, that you intend to use in AE.   (1) you can use the entire 4 GB of RAM on a 32 bit OS. It is a due limitation of 32-bit technology. Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 may recognize the full 4 GB of RAM but not use it, more than 3.2 g.
