16 GB of memory in UCS

Recently, we bought some 16 GB DIMMs for a B200 M2 (not Cisco) for testing and an urgent need to increase our memory on a server ESXi cluster needs.

We receive an error 'has an invalid FRU. The cause is "identity-no.

We organize as an older version on the 6120 fabric interconnects. What is the problem?

A know what Cisco sales / support the 16 GB DIMMS?

I thought that this is the case you can use the non-Cisco on the blade memory (as in there will function), you'll simply get the error. It is not supported by Cisco then you run the risk that the TAC will make you replace before to help you. It seems that there is some 16 gigabits in the current catalog of ability for example Samsung M393b2k70cm0-yf8 (1066 Mhz quad rank) or M393b2k70cm-yf8 (double row of 1333 Mhz) and a Hynix HMT42GR7BMR4A-H9DX (grade quad 1333 Mhz).

I currently have 2 x blades series B200 M2 with 12 x 4GB 1066 MHz DIMM memory added to it. I just ordered a blade series B230 M2 and more memory for the B200 blades. I ordered memory 16GB sticks for the B200, which will fill the DIMM slots, and some of the 8 GB at 1333 MHz sticks for the 230's. I can add the left over 4 GB 1066 MHz sticks to the B230 without any problem?

I am also aware that adding memory to speed the blade probably would decrease the speed of the 8 GB at 1333 MHz to 1066. But I don't want the size memory.

    Hello

For B230, we must install bars in pairs and they must be the same within a pair. So unless that, if these modules are not classified as a pair, it is not recommended to be installed on B230.

The following documentation provides more detailed information on the guidelines memory of population.

    Memory installation guide

    http://www.Cisco.com/en/us/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10280/spec_sheet_c17-665957.PDF

If you have already ordered their pair, yes we have memory modules (kit memory of 8 GB / 4 GB) as suggested in the document.

Also if the B230 installed with Intel's EX family processors, they operate only at 1066 MHz, even though the memory module are able to operate at 1333 MHz.

  • LEDs of State fault/memory system UCS C200 M2

We have just received servers C200 M2 with 32 GB of Ram (4 * 8 GB). One of the server gives the status of fault in the front LED. Two LEDs are bright orange - led failure system and fault led memory. First two days, the servers are hanging all night and we had to restart in the morning. These last two days the servers work OK but these LEDs are permanently on.

We would like to know the exact reasons for these lights and always the system works. How to stop these LEDs? If any body has come across this error message, please discuss the corrective actions performed by the latter.

  • ESXi Shared memory of commom and UCS B200M2

I vSphere 4.x environment to IBM 3650 and half B200M2 (a group consisting of the 3650 and a group consisting of the B200M2).  IBM machines are 2 socket quad core with 34 GB of memory and Cisco are 2 Socket 6 core with 48 GB of memory.  Workloads on IBM and Cisco ESXi hosts are the same.  For most of 2008 and Windows 2003 machines.  On IBM machines, I move 1 GB, 2 GB of shared memory (common shared memory - amount of memory that is shared by all virtual machines powered and vSphere services on host machine) on each ESXi host.  On Cisco machines, I get around 15 MB on each ESXi host. Considering that it is one of the great features of VMware (sharing of memory) why is there such a huge disparity between the machines?  Is it because the Cisco blades NUMA machines?  Is there a setting I'm missing?  It's a huge difference.  I don't regret getting the UCS stuff I like it but it is the big novelty of the VMware that does not work with the UCS.

Please take a look at the following:

  • UCS 200 M1 power Hang @ 'configuration and test of memory, please wait... »

    Hi all

I am new to the solution of the UCS and tried recently updated the BIOS via the host update utility and MMIC. There were a few warnings version that prevented the upgrade, but I was able to update the firmware of the NETWORK adapter.

CIMC is at version 1.0.2 and BIOS at C200.1.4.1.0.071320110702.

I'm not sure how to read the version of the BIOS however.

When the server is turned on, there are 3 long beeps and it crashes to the configuration and memory test, please wait...

In any case, I am tired of the BIOS recovery procedure using the J1E5 jumper without success.

    If anyone has experienced this?

    Thank you in advance.

    Calvin.

Host upgrade utility is not supported until version 1.2.

This may have been the cause of some of your upgrade issues.

You run a BIOS of 1.4 to what I see. You will need to update your version MMIC for version 1.2 and the. Use the HUU to 1.4

  • UCS hot add/replace memory/CPU

Hello. I know on cisco UCS C460 we can expand the amount of memory using memory riser cards. Memory riser cards are hot-swappable. This means that when I run Win2008R2 Datacenter Server c460 I can hot add and replace the memory riser card memory?

Can I hot replace memory on the motherboard slots?

What UCS server models are supported CPU hot add/replace?

    Dmitry,

Yes the risers of memory are hot-swappable, so assuming that the bare metal OS can support memory added to hot it will work.

There is no DIMM slots on the motherboard directly on the C460.  Memory riser is only motherboard for memory interfaces.

There is no such a thing to my knowledge as an addition to hot CPU on all Cisco platforms.

See the Installation Guide HW for more information:

    We have recently installed a few new servers M3 B200, completely filled with DIMMS of 24 x 16 GB (1866 mhz), 2 x E5-2697 v2 processors.

Manager of the UCS poster the DIMMs properly in the inventory tab, but in the general tab, shows "Memory operating speed" 1333 MHz (same speed in the boot messages.

    Controller on board: 8.0

    Firmware: 2.1.3a

    MMIC: 2.1.3a

Anyone know why I see the slow speed of the memory? What Miss me?

    Joe,

Take a look at table 7 here:

    https://www.Cisco.com/en/us/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10280/B200M3_SpecSheet.PDF

If you use 3dpc you'd be stuck at 1333, even if you are att 1866 DIMMS and CPU.

  • Kingston memory for servers in the UCS

    Hi all

Can I use Kingston memory in the UCS servers? The price difference is about £100 per module!

Not supported! Managing memory (Cisco) is listed in the functional specifications of the blades.

If you install memory not Cisco, guaranteed material blade will be gone ;-)

  • New UCS-C210 problem with video monitor output

    Hi all

We just bought a new Cisco UCS C210 M2 product for our CUCM migration to Virtual Machines. We plugged a HP monitor and a USB keyboard to start work with the UCS. Then we plugged the server to the power supply and turn on the server, the fan worked properly for his initial shot. However, I could not see the monitor up and I can't see if it boots correctly. We waited and notice that the keyboard seems to work as you can see the num and lock the scroll works.

I unplugged the monitor of the connection of the console before the use of the foxconn connector that came with it and plugged into the DB15 port on the back. Same result the monitor does not display anything.

So I went on the second UCS server using the same keyboard and mouse, everything works.

Any who know this problem of the screen does not? If so, please share how to fix it.

Otherwise, our conclusion would be that Cisco sent us a faulty hardware or it has become defective during the transport.

    Thank you best regards &,.

    Ramon

OK fans turn upwards and then downwards with the lights on the front would indicate to me that the server itself is ok and boot up normally. The fact that you have used this monitor UCS one another in the same way seems to indicate that the problem is probably with this server and a video on the issue. I suggest to open a TAC case and include these steps you have taken. If you can, try reinstalling all your memory and boot up the server again.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Steve,.

There could be a faulty MEMORY Strip on the system, in the MMIC, you can check the logs SALT (System event log) that will provide you with more details.

I give advice you open a TAC case for this, we can take a look at the tech show and understand why accurate and if necessary replace the defective DIMM module / part (if defective).

  • B200 M3 memory stuck at 1333 MHz in performance mode

    Hello

We have 2 B200 M3s in a new deployment running 2.0(3a). The B200s are configured with 64 GB using DIMMs of 8 GB, using BANK 0 of each channel. We deployed a policy of BIOS specifying performance for LV DDR mode and confirmed this setting takes effect in the BIOS, but the memory continues to run at 1333 MHz. When we look at the inventory server, the DIMMs are reported as 8GB 1600 MHz DIMM dual rank. We tried forcing the DIMMs in mode low voltage and return to the mode of performance without result.

In other UCS environments, we have deployed these same blades with the same configuration of the memory and BIOS policy and had no problem getting the RAM at full speed. We do not use any kind of power is corking.

    Thoughts?

  • Unable to find the required details for SNS-UCS-TPM in the datasheet as rack unit size

    Hello

I'm just trying to understand the dimensions of the SNS-UCS-TPM device and the same power requirement...

Is - this 1 U device with 1 x 650W PSU? I think details power but I'm not able to get the size details with respect to the width, length, and width.

Can you please share the good link that will offer all of this in detail?

The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a module of small integrated circuits on the new network of Secure Server (SNS) 3415 and 3495 device models. They are based on the platform Unified Computing System (UCS) C220 M3.

Both the 3415 and 3495 have the same physical dimensions, differing only by the number of processors, memory and hard drives installed in their breast.

The detailed characteristics of the UCS C220 M3 are here. You can see a diagram of where the TPM is installed here.

  • UCS Service profiles

I have a UCS chassis with 8 blades B200 M3 (run 2.0.5a). Each blade contains a 1240 VIC and a 1280 of VIC. The blades have a service profile that is already associated with them and everything works fine. I bought cards cache for these EMC xtreme blades so I need stop each blade, remove the VIC 1280 and insert the new card cache xtreme. My question: will I be able to re - associate the original service profile for blades once I inserted cards cache xtreme or do I have to create a new service profile template and create new service profiles?

I know that I get an error when I try to associate a profile of invalid service for a blade, but I have trying to figure out if this will work before I do actually.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hello Ernes,

About the association of profile service, you can use the same profile after making changes on the hardware and the creation of new service profiles is not necessary.

I guess you refer to LSI 400GO SLC warpdrive adapter when you are referring to the memory card cover xterme EMC.

  • UCS General questions

    Hello

I have a few questions about UCS. Do not hesitate to reply to all the of them, thank you!

    1. What are the main benefits of using FCoE vs FC to UCS?
    2. can someone point me to performance data of FCoE vs FC in the UCS?
    3. What is the difference between the fixed modules and expansion on made them other than being able to replace the plug-ins? A difference that I noticed is that when you select "Configure the Ports unified" on the FI, it says that all FI will have to reboot if you use fixed ports, but the port expansion module can restart independently. There are other differences between the fixed modules and expansion?
    4. What is the best practice for creating organizations? The limit is usually the data center? What are the benefits for the combination of several data centers (which could be in the same geographic area) into a single entity?
    5. most people configure UCS of 'root', or they always configuring everything in specific OUs they create?
    6. This setup of most of the organizations mentioned here video separates VSAN for each fabric (A & B)
    a. How are the fiber channel pass setup to accommodate the VSAN on made them?
    7. is there an advantage to having separate VSANS / VLAN ID between fabric A and B? A few examples I see use the same ID of the VSAN on both fabrics, while others are not
    8. in this diagram (link), there are 4 connections from the FIs to the San. Each FI is wired to each storage processor. In this configuration, how it the SAN be configured - ALUA?
9 (for ESXi hosts) what are the advantages/disadvantages of creating a model vNIC for each tissue, compared to one model for each vmnic vNIC?
    10. under what circumstances should you not check "Activate the failover" for models vNIC for esxi hosts?

    11. What is the best practice for the connection of FEX-to - IOM to the title of the material > policies > policies > chassis/FEX discovered political? Many companies set it up as a Port channel or not?

    (1) complex is the best I can say.  For us, we decided to stay with native CF that we already have the buildout FCC native. Our network group is for us to move to FCoE (we use N5K for our data center fabric switches).  But for our SAN group, we all all comfortable with native CF right now and didn't want to convolute our UCS deployment at a crossing FCoE.

    2) UCS FCoE, comes from the back of the interconnection.  There is no difference in performance. Once FC lands to interconnection, interconnection opens the package and converts it to the headers of FCoE, laying on a VLAN you configure (must be a VLAN unique, it will leave you not overlap with production VLAN defined in UCS already) and sends it to the VIC. The VIC then opens the package FCoE and hands to the BONE as if it were native fiber channel.  The difference in performance between the two is negligible.

    (3) the fixed module is controlled a.  When you change the unified ports any interconnection charges.  When you load a plug-in only the plug-in restarts if you change its setting unified ports.  Another thing to note when buying a plug-in you get you license additional ports that can be used everywhere where (it doesn't have a plug-in port license).  Other than that, the performance and the functionality is the same as fixed.

    (4) create us organizations for each type of OS because different groups managing different OS'. For example, we have an org for VMare, one for Linux, for windows, and then a special one oracle for our DBAs. We then assign permissions via AD to local so the groups have access to their servers with a minimum of effort on our part.

    (5) while root except if necessary below (haven't run this yet)

    (6) as a "best practice", you should always have two separate fabrics. UCS must put the FCoE VLAN fabrics.  To avoid confusion, it is best to put each fabric in its own VSAN. For example, we run our SAN fabric production in VSAN around 10 and FCoE VLAN 3210.  SAN fabric B is to VSAN 11, FCoE VLAN 3211.
(6A) the prospect of a MDS/Nexus that you put in place a "f-port trunk." Newspapers of the UCS in the fabric as a nport with NPIV (ucs connects and then tells the fiber switch "also, these additional WWPN are also on this port, I just connected to, send their data to me").  You put the f-port channel you create on the mds/nexus device in the VSAN you want (in my example, 10 for A VSAN and VSAN 11b). Also to note: you cross never interconnection fabrics up to your SAN infrastructure. InterConnect will have a port channel to A SAN fabric and
Interconnect B to B SAN fabric.  Consider the interconnections as HBA on a normal server.  You do not mix the tissues A and B.  That's how you get redundancy SAN.

    (7) see above.  I strongly recommend that create you separate VSANS for each fabric.  This will ensure that nothing ever gets through.

    (8) If you connect directly FIs them processors SAN you must activate the switch for on the UCS fabric mode.  You won't be able to connect the UCS for all fiber switches once do you it, and all the zoning must be done in UCSM. It does not work (we do in our test environment), be aware that it fits well beyond an area.  You would provide the same as before your San.  Activate ALUA.  The first port on each SP would go to FI - A and the second port on each SP would go to the FI - B.  Then the appropriate area in UCSM.

    (9) our ESXi hosts get a minimum of six models of vNIC.  We create an A, B mgmt, A vmotion, vmotion mgmt B, features and data B.  As you can guess, pin us each model to a cloth and do not switch.  This gives us a ton of flexibility within ESXi.  Furthermore, I believe that it is the 'best practice' is not to use the failover fabric for VMware. (If you chose, you will get alarms in vmware indicating that there is no redundancy nic.  There is an advanced disable setting.  Do not have casual, you would need to google that.). I recommend you to make a template for each tissue and keeping them up-to-date as a pair.

    (10) I wouldn't use fabric failover for everything related to VMware, VMware does a great job of redundancy management.  Let it do its work.  We only use the fabric failover for windows and Linux host running the SCU.

    (11) Yes set up as a port channel.  Before you connect the chassis as you can not no interruption of service do this later.  When a frame is automatically recognized, port channels or groups of pine are configured behind the scenes.  You cannot change these directly. Therefore, if you switch to port channels later, the only way to 'rebuild' is to re - emphasize the chassis, which will be the frame and everything in it in offline mode.  Bad day.  If you do not port channels, use the vETH blade interfaces get pinned to an uplink (following the defined process of cisco, google for UCS once again pinning get more information).  The channels of port pine servers to the interface port-channel instead of the uplink interface which makes it much more stable and resistant to link failure.  Pinning, if memory is, if a link to a server is pinned breaks down, the interface of the server is down.  It is not "repin" the link.  Thus, for example, if you do not use channel ports and a server gets pinned to uplink 1/1, and it breaks down, the server will see this interface out of service.  With a port channel, as long as a link in the chain is in place, the server will be displayed.

I hope this helps. I typed this from my ipad - do not hesitate to respond and I'll try to clarify.
